      Anonymous

      There were three ships total.
      >Titanic
The one EVERYONE knows. Gloriously Dramatic Disaster, spawned two classic films, and only recently got attention because some idiot thought a DIY sub was a good idea for tourism. Currently being dissolved by rust eating bacteria and will sadly soon be pile of collapsed junk on the sea floor.
      >Britannic
Was meant to be a Ocean Liner, but was drafted into The Great War as a Hospital ship. Served well until it struck a German Sea Mine in the Mediterranean and sunk. The wreck is in relatively shallow water so you can actually visit this one and NOT DIE!
      >Olympic
The ONLY one of the three ships to not sink! And that's about it. She too was drafted into the War as a Troop Transport, surviving the war and going on to have a healthy career in the interwar period until better liners outdated her and she was decommissioned and scrapped in the late 1930s.

The Game is basically alternate history where the Britannic didn't hit the mine and sink.

In 999's superior predecessor Ever17, the characters had 7 days to live and chatting about various random subjects made perfect sense. (The seemingly random conversations also had a much better pay-off in the end.) It was criticized for being too slow, so Uchikoshi gave the characters only 9 hours in his inferior copy.

I hope you're trolling and not really that dumb. Never7 was a romance VN that they added some sci-fi mystery stuff to. With Ever17 they shifted the focus to the sci-fi mystery stuff while mostly keeping the romance aspect. Only with Remember11 did they ditch the romance focus and go all-in on the sci-fi mystery aspect. Having non-romance stuff was the subversion back in 2002. All the pure sci-fi mystery VNs came after.

                Anonymous

Sorta-kinda, in the same way for example Rewrite is a romance VN. It has a romance focus in the initial routes and the marketing focuses on the appeal of the heroines, but the overarching plot and final route (final routes in Rewrite's case) don't have a romance focus. It was definitely marketed as a romance game, at least (because that was the market back then).

So what's your problem with calling them out for writing some bad to average romance routes in hopes of subverting the players expectations later?

                Anonymous

Because that's not at all what they did. You could argue they did that with Never7 (or rather its original version Infinity), though even there the game starts immediately with flash-forwards. After Never7 everyone knew Ever17 would be more sci-fi frickery within the context of a romance game. Nobody went into Ever17 not expecting it to be a sci-fi mystery. Not to mention the whole mystery baiting in the character routes themselves. Did you even play Ever17?

                >Did you even play Ever17?
Yes and I finished it. Not because the game does a good job of pulling you into its mystery but because the recommendation was to power through the the repetitive filler parts (arguably the majority of the game) and an assurance that there would be a satisfying ending.

I got bored of this game too quickly. Is it ever explained why they all know and cite random obscure facts? IIRC one of the lines of text in the opening is "why do I know these things?"

      Anonymous

They seem random at first but as the story progresses it all starts connecting, and this connection and how it happens is also an interesting part of the story
It actually builds up pretty well once it picks up, and if you don't mind a bit of pseudo science for a good story, it's a very good and self contained narrative

The sequels kinda jump the shark a bit, at least the third one, but the first is a visual novel classic imo

      Anonymous

      WTF

For starters most of the facts are false. This game is a good example of what I call "ultrarrealism", which is when you mix fiction with real facts in a way that leaves the player unable to tell what is real and what isn't.

That aside, everything they bring up is either directly related to the game's events or it seemingly is in a red herring kind of way. Like the All-Ice mummy looking an awful lot like the egyptian chick Alice. Ultimately June is the mastermind and created this game so that she could force the characters to time travel, specifically Junpei so he could save 12yo June from an identical nonary game in which she has to solve a sudoku puzzle to live, but since she is a child she is too dumb to solve it without time-traveling help

            Anonymous

999 is just Akane getting information from the game Junpei is going through due to their connection in the morphogenetic field. Her consciousness isn't jumping around. The first instance of time travel in the series is Sigma swapping places with his older self at the start of VLR.

              Anonymous

First game is about (re)creating the events she saw through the morphogenetic field. And please don't bring up retcons introduced by the sequels

Exchanging information through the morphogenetic field is time travel. It doesn't always have to be SHIFTING. It is analogous to Steins;Gate, they can send text messages to the past and that's still time traveling.

                >Exchanging information through the morphogenetic field is time travel.

Semantics. She set the nonary game to force Junpei to send the sudoku solution back to e-girl Akane, thus shaping the future so that the second nonary game could even happen in the first place. It is a rudimentary form of time travel. Also, Junpei was constantly sending information to himself in other timelines.

                Anonymous

Not semantics, she's not forcing characters to time travel, as simple as that. She's also not forcing characters to send back information, it's her past self using the morphogenetic field to access information in the future in a scenario she created.

                > Also, Junpei was constantly sending information to himself in other timelines.

Blame Uchikoshi for that. In the games where he worked together with Nakazawa, all science explanations were real or genuine speculative science without debunked bullshit, and it was clear what parts were realistic and what parts were fiction. Nakazawa's later works retain this clear distinction where the science attempts to be as 'real' as possible (Root Double even specifically marks its tips as nonfiction/fictional/partly fiction) whereas Uchikoshi started embracing obvious bullshit and treated it as if it were real.

But anon, ultrarrealism is not a bad thing. I love it. Questioning if a game might actually be real is peak immersion. Other than 999 I only felt this in MGS3's start. It's a pretty rare writing technique.

Also keep in mind this "technique" does not even exist, it's just a pattern I found among two games and named in an amateurish way. But I wish more games did this.

No, the part of Never7 that's relevant to Ever17 is Izumi Cure, the final part of the game, and honestly it's not all that relevant. In fact, since Never7's phenomena are kind of bullshitty I'd argue it's better to play Ever17 and Remember11 first and only afterwards dive into Never7 (either by playing it or just reading the spoilers on 'Cure Syndrome') and deciding for yourself whether to accept it or dismiss it as bullshit. Knowing about it beforehand might taint your E17/R11 experience if you think it's bullshit.

I like the detective games that actually make my brain crank and think and come to the conclusion before the game does it for me for those not partaking. Like Lamplight City or Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments.

Like actualy criminal investigation type stuff, not "JUNPEI, PSYCHIC EXPERIMENTS TIME WARP LITTLE GIRLS!".

Just makes me feel like an idiot for actually trying to read into characters and motivations to find out who the killer was logically.

          Anonymous

The game still gave you plenty of time to determine that Ace is the killer. If you're referring to figuring out who Zero is, the door choices of Akane and Santa are subtle enough hints in my opinion to figure out those two are acting more suspicious than everyone else for some reason before they spell it out in the safe ending.

the same happen to me with virtue last reward,i save up the cyan until the very end,so i didnt kow anything about the bombs and was only getting the codes for it,so i troght that the plot was about sending them to the past to desactivate the bombs and prevent earth destrucction, then i did the cyan ddor and the game took a spiral down.

hated the moronic pseudo-scientific facts in this shit game, felt like they were just lookin shit up on Wikipedia or worse.
also the food analogies are even more moronic (only played the remaster on PS4, no idea if it's something from the original DS gaem)

Explained by Never7's Cure Syndrome, which basically boils down to 'reality bends itself to your expectations'. Notably, this subtly also manifests itself in Remember11, where people don't die until they realize they're dying. Yeah, Cure Syndrome is bullshit. Fortunately they almost entirely kept it out of elements that actually matter in Ever17 and Remember11 (that section you mention is just some extra excitement at the end and could've easily been replaced with a boring more reasonable course of action).

a shame this doesn't play in ztd proper but only as a piano remix during the apocalypse ending and when junpei tells c team about where the 999 cast is
