Sure if you want to match all the moronic options on that prebuilt. Pretty much every part category has a cheaper option that's just as good. Cheaper cpu if this is really just for gaming, cheaper cooler by a massive degree, cheaper ram since there's no reason to spend 500 on ddr5 6000, cheaper mobo since the good ones start at $150, Microcenter has 4090s for 1800-900, still a ripoff but less that 3k

you might get faster render times if you're doing 3d animation, but even then you're still going to leave it rendering over night, because there's frick all else you can do with the computer while it's working away, and is still going to take a significant amount of time to render out a full animation.
a detailed scene in blender takes the 4090 ~30 seconds, compare that with the 4080 which takes ~37 seconds. assuming the animation is 24fps, a 10min animation would take the 4090 120hrs to render, and the 4080 148hrs. with both cards you're still waiting a significant amount of time, but the 4080 is significantly cheaper and uses less power.

You could build a gaming PC just as good as that one for 1/3 the price.

Agreed. 32 threads is excessive for gaming, and I've never seen more than two thirds of my 32gb RAM used so I can only imagine that you'd be upgrading to DDR6 before 64gb is ever useful. The 4090 is not overpowered though, there is always room for higher resolutions and more frames.

            Anonymous

            >there is always room for higher resolutions and more frames
Games aren't optimized for high framerates at all.
I remember buying a 2080Ti in 2019 and running Subnautica expecting a solid framerate, only to be greeted with 40 FPS in some areas. The game just runs like shit, no horsepower can run it better.

Then there's shit like Starfield. You get the point.

This is because most modern games are poorly coded and are bottlenecked by the CPU. There are always some games with a GPU bottleneck though, especially at 4k, and a 4090 will draw more frames in those games.

It is more than 1% but that still isn't enough to justify the price and to actually experience the performance gain you have to spend thousands extra on a frickass monitor. Performance isn't the most important thing, the price/performance ratio is .

            >only fools buy the best gaming CPU currently on the market
The 7800X3D absolutely shatters Incel CPUs in gaming performance. You're paying more for a bunch of cores that do nothing for gaming performance and a bunch of extra power consumption. If your PC doubles as a workstation and you like to run tasks in the background while gaming then fair enough, but for a pure gaming rig, the X3D is the only choice.

Yeah no shit it's similar once you're bottlenecked by your GPU, but we're talking about a 4090 build, which will still see a CPU bottleneck in some games at 4k.

It's amazing how Intel managed to market a 24 core workstation CPU to gamers by pumping it with absurd amounts of electricity and flaunting Cinebench scores.

so what you're saying is that when AMD beat Intel at 720p gaming with a 4090 then that's fine, but when Intel beat AMD doing regular PC stuff then it doesn't count? lol

No I'm saying that in real world tests the 14900k is a fricking lemon.
You should compare it to something like the 7950k instead which is actual competition and not a dedicated gaming CPU like the 7800x3d. Even there, it's not worth 50% more wattage and heat for 10% more performance, it's unreasonable.

if it's beating it at 720p then it's beating it at every res, reducing resolution maximizes the work the cpu has to do, but it won't magically make one cpu faster than another under the same conditions

That same variance amount could be down to a model of motherboard. For eg I ran Cinebench on ASRock motherboard and hit 39450 score. The motherboard broke so I RMA'd it. the new motherboard scores 41500. Same memory, same CPU , same drive etc.

It's funny when "muh Intel superiority" gays like you think this is a gotcha when the average (nonenthusiast) user's CPU probably doesn't scratch to the top 5 and the fact that nothing made by AMD would've even hit the top 10 a decade or more ago.

Not matter how you slice it, AMD has come a long way and there's a spectrum of reasonable performance whether high end or just tailing in the slipstream of that level is good enough.

                Anonymous

So posting a comparison benchmark is "muh Intel superiority" ? Intel scored double what AMD scored. Do you not think that's impressive at all, or is it a useless benchmark because it doesn't fit in with your agenda?

It might be different for you but I feel that with so many prebuilt companies nowadays, the prices are competitive and are actually better than buying all the parts yourself due to economies of scale. You just have to make sure the build you are getting doesnt have a cheap component somewhere.

If you got the money pcspecialist has a great website for building all the specs you want and has a useful live chat available if you've got any questions about parts you're interested in.

You can fricking enjoy games on a gt 1030. Playing games doesn't make a gpu good, it's the bare minimum expected. The 4070 is shit.

                Anonymous

You're wrong and quite possibly moronic. A 4070 is better than what like 95% of people who play PC games have in their systems.

                Anonymous

It's also more expensive than 95% of the gpus people have. What exactly is your point? That it's good automatically because it's stronger? That there are no bad gpus just open your wallet for the first one that comes by and then do it again as soon as you see a new one?

My younger brother has a 3060 ti and I don't think he'll have to upgrade for a long while. He games at 1080p and still hits high framerates. Unironically I believe they made dlss and stuff for people like him. If his card ever starts chocking he can just use that and he'll be set for even longer.

                Anonymous

That's not how upscaling works. If you are fine with that level of quality then game devs will just use the extra headroom to make shit run worse. The 3060ti would last exactly the same amount of time if dlss weren't a thing. It's not a benefit to anyone.

                Anonymous

This. PC games these days are optimized towards DLSS upscaling + frame gen, it's expected that you use them in order to get acceptable performance.

That's still more expensive and worse performing than a PS5. Builds like this are even more moronic than expensive ones. PC gaming is good because of how powerful high end PCs can be compared to any console on the market. If you can't afford high end parts, just stick to console, because you're defeating the purpose and throwing away money building shitty sub-par rigs for twice the cost of a PS5 or Xbox Series.

PC is the worst option at the moment for gaming.

PS5 games at average of 1400p 60fps is honestly all you need. 4k doesn't really matter especially from TV viewing range.

Lack of resale value for games also sucks on PC. PS5 has been great, every new release I wanna play I sell for some more money later if I dont like it anymore.

I wish I could sell 90% of the dogshit in my steam library just for 1 cent to get rid of the shit.

I basically bought it with the idea of on-the-go gaming (in the sense I'd whip it out in locations with outlet access, I'm still aware of power requirements needed for a true gaming experience), a lack of space I could dedicate to a desktop PC at the time, and feeling a bit underwhelmed with what the Steam Deck offered after testing out a friend's.

As far as which path I'd plan on going, I was thinking about building a desktop PC with similar specs to said laptop but somewhat beefier.

XMP is overclocking. Your memory or memory controller/CPU can't handle the overclock. Either RMA the memory or leave it switched off.
Some motherboard BIOS allow simple memory speed selectors - try setting it at 5200mt and see if it's stable

Either your sticks need to be in the other slots or your CPU doesn't like that speed. You can manually adjust the frequency down until your PC is stable.

Layering, effects, brush engine and so on will take up a lot of processing power. While I have seen irl pros work on on photoshop that was refreshing at a internal of one per second while just moving stuff, this wont work for drawing. But drawing stuff and using ps are 2 different things so it might not be to bad, definitely depends on your workflow. Increase the res and see for yourself

No. All you need is high amounts of ram maybe. With a worse cpu it would just take slightly longer to process and gpu is barely relevant in image editing. If you were doing 3d renders then you would need big vram gpus.

I like to use Krita, which from what I understand is more CPU dependent than anything.

I think RT gets a bad rap cause it doesn't actually work correctly in memory limited scenarios
I got an RTX 2070 in 2018, a 3080ti a few years later and the 4090 just recently, and I've noticed that the 4090 not only has higher/smoother framerates, but hairworks and RTX quality is MASSIVELY improved compared to the other cards.
Hairworks in RE4 and DMC5 both made everyone look kinda mangey and balding on the lower cards, with very few hair strands animated, but playing it now Leon's hair is extremely full and wavy and swishes all over the place.
Lighting/shadows as well seem far less spotty and awkward.
tl;dr, I think raytracing is less accurate when performance limited, not just slower like traditional rendering techniques

              Anonymous

Pretty much spot on, ray tracing quality is directly tied to frame rate and resolution in a way which it really isn't for standard raster techniques. But it is not inherently this way. It is this way in gaming because of all the clever algorithms that are used for approximation, denoising, and temporal accumulation that allow a full image to be drawn from a very limited number of rays and bounces so that it's feasible to render in real time. Much like DLSS, more information means more accuracy, less errors, and thus less blur and dithering. It's unlike traditional techniques where turning down the resolution means you're looking at basically the same image but represented by less pixels - it actually has a profound effect on the content of the image.

In theory, if it were possible to shoot enough rays with enough bounces that you could render a realistic and complete image at 60fps without any of those spatial and temporal shortcuts, there would be no difference between resolutions, besides of course the resolution itself.

SSAO is essential in mid-older games. Most games from 7th gen or so, some older some newer. Not old enough to have retro appeal, made after the point where realism and fidelity became the major design factor. They look shitty and naked without any AO.

Why do people do this? By the time you need more than 32gb for gaming, it will be time to upgrade to DDR6 and your RAM will be useless. I have literally never used close to 32gb in a game even with significant VRAM spillover.

WHY? Scrap the HDD, scrap the excess 32gb of RAM, and use that money to buy a bigger SSD.

I do agree that the past 5 or so years has been terrible for PC gaming in general.
But I missed the entire period having not upgraded or made a new build during that time.

    1. Overpriced gpus because of crypto/trade war. Can't even trust secondhand parts because you don't know the load parts were previously under.

    2. Immature raytacing hardware and vram limits so that everything from 20xx to 40xx cards can't even do what they're touted to do at highest settings.

    3. Unoptimized games that can't be maxed out by even the top of the line gpus.

    4. General user unfriendly hardware/software trends:
    (i) motherboard design being streamlined from jack-of-all-trades to being 'optimized' (cut corners) for the bare minimum requirements it takes to run a game, so decreased number of sata ports, decreased number of pci-e slots, built in bluetooth/wifi costs a premium, ecc ram support costs a premium, etc.
(ii) chassis moving away from available external 5.25" cage expansion slots in favor of internal slots and useless 'sleek' designs or form-over-function transparent windows
(iii) CPUs containing unique identifiers in the form of TPM 2.0, and associated "management engines" that can spy on you.
(iv) OSes like Windows becoming more bogged and intrusive than ever before, all but forcing one to move to linux
    (v) Old games and even the steam platform suddenly pushing for people to stop using w7 or 8 even though the games previously ran them just fine. Dead by daylight for instance runs on those OSes just fine but introduced an arbitrary requirements that require the new OS (game looks like shit and shouldn't need new tech in the first place).

There are more but these are just a few that come to mind. And obviously the inflation of price of everything.

I am not planning to upgrade any time soon. At this rate I'll be skipping the 50xx gen as well.

Pc gaming sucks so much ass holy shit. Computers SUCK, god they just suck to use. So fricking annoying, not a damn thing comfy about it. And all the spam and spyware you constantly have to dodge. Its the worst possible way to play anything. Unless you can’t find the game anywhere else, it’s the last place you want to play a game. I legitimately, 100% seriously feel bad for pc gamers if that’s all they have.

i built my PC in 2010 and have since swapped out every single part bit by bit, but i still consider it the same computer. Sort of like that thing about how we replace 98% of our atoms every year or whatever but we're still the same being. I have probably spent a total of ~2k on my computer in these last 14 years. I never buy GPUs, my brother upgrades before I do and then I take his old one. I've used a 1060 since like 2018 and i still get 60 fps on modern games, just can't go beyond 1080p.

          >amd
best price performance CPUs now in general
          >intel
lagging behind at the moment, they barely hit similar performance levels to be competitive while eating up tons of power (this one's important because effectively the only way for a CPU to eat power is to turn it into heat, and no one wants a 500w space heater in the room during summer)

          >nvidia
tons of gimmicks, performant rtx, good windows drivers, every game runs
          >amd gpu
cheaper for equivalent performance, less gimmicks, rarely you hear about some one specific game that won't run on AMD for some dumb frick reasons, then it gets patched either on game side or on driver side and it's all fine. guess that makes it a less reliable choice, although price can be tempting

however, a wise man always checks through his choices per specific models and price brackets, not by company name, so you should always check how one directly compares to the other, for example by looking for vidya comparisons on youtube don't use userbenchmark, this website is a massive joke. one exception is nvidia vs amd gpus, because then you subscribe to very nvidia proprietary gimmicks and better vidya compatibility versus AMD price/raw performance ratio and better AMD linux support, but in general, making your choice based exclusively on brand name is less than optimal

Benchmarks, gameplay videos, comparisons, also nothing i've said aside of intel lagging behind at the moment applies specifically and exclusively to latest gen. Checking performance between specific models in your price range is always a good idea, new hardware or not. It made sense when I was upgrading, it makes sense now, it will make sense in the future.

Yet another homosexual who can't be bothered to do 5 minutes of research. You should either build your own first PC (preferably with the help of a friend, online tutorials, in-person service, etc) or buy a prebuilt from like 1-3 trusted companies. Vast majority of companies will scam newbies looking for a prebuilt. Only decent ones I've seen are the ones made by ABS (Newegg) and a few others I can't remember.
