an actual video game. it's like portal 1 to portal 2.

So it's a sequel that doesn't respect the dark, mysterious tone of the original game and ruins it by padding it to hell and forcing awkward humor?

actually half true, and the true half is so correct. the day cycles are still there but there is no total day limit. There are now multiple dungeons in each level that when entered stop time, so you have unlimited time to do them. The environment is still eerie but slightly more whimsical than 1. There is more dialog and things have less room to breath so much as will be explained. That is a trend you will see through 2 into 3 into 4 unfortunately.
HOWEVER many QoL improvements are also made. There's a ton of glitchy or inconvinient mechanics in 1 where Pikmin just wont do stuff or will trip and fall behind that are much less prevalent. They snap onto things better.
New Pikmin types are added into the games starting from here. Pikmin 2 has one relaly broken type of Pikmin that will be your EZ go-to, but they are also so valuable that you can't afford to lose a single one of them. Cheers, this may be the last Pikmin game with that super wilderness mystique, after that they're still beautiful and fun but they hit differently.

yes it is like portal 1 to portal 2 because it's a sequel that's inferior to the original

the threat of the timer is replaced by the threat of surprise hazards that wipe out a huge amount of min in the later caves

The extremely rare case of a sequel being very different from it's predecessor while still managing to be just as good.

OP here, this game seems very divisive. Will have to let you know which side I fall on.

This the probably the statement I think is best for Pikmin 2. It's still a fantastic game despite been different from the original.

It gets so much love for expanding the world and its characters as well as introducing some of the most iconic series staples which many of its features came back for Pikmin 4 which I think says a lot.

Caves, caves and more caves. I'm not kidding, the game is genuinely like 60% randomly generated, multi-floor dungeons and 40% actual levels, most of which are re-skins of Pikmin 1 levels. The caves are kind of fun and satisfying for the first few hours but once they start creating 10-15 floor caves it becomes an incredible fucking chore to get through the game. Pikmin 1 at its best was about planning your days out, cautiously interacting with the wildlife and trying your best to stay alive on this alien world with handcrafted levels. Pikmin scraps a lot of that feeling to focus on the mediocre combat and working your way though RNG dungeons. I have no clue why its thought of as the best one.

It does so much right, but even more wrong. The Piklopedia and emails are amazing and so are the treasures. But ultimately its a very lazy sequel.

Lazy is probably the wrong word but you've got some fair points. The caves do tend to drag a bit later in the game, but I think this is because they were seemingly designed to be save scummed what with the game prompting you to save every single floor and dropping instant game over bombs on you constantly.
Last time I played through it I leaned all the way into this and used save states in my emulator instead of restarting the game to load a save and it was honestly a much better experience. Pikmin 4 confirms that that's the intent with how they added the "time travel" thing.

Wait, am I retarded or is this anon retarded.
      The caves aren't RNG?
And they're the highlight of the game, significantly better than the caves in 4 - they have actual thematic substance and ongoing threat of defeat.

A game that tries something different and pulls it off horribly.

Tip: Reset whenever you die in the cave. The reset button doesn't restart the game, it just loads up the lastest floor all over again

I skip through this and just played 3, it was kino just like the first one. Haven't played Pikmin 4, how is it?

every pikmin game gets easier but they still play really fun. They did caves correct by designing them well and also adding many challenge level modes. Game will handhold for a time, and the item unlocks function pretty closely to skill trees.

Different approach to the previous game turning it from an RTS to a dungeon crawler collectithon. Some think this entry is the best whereas others think it's the worst. Personally I find it to be the best but if you don't it will be understandable, just know people are annoying on both sides of the topic usually.

Favorite zone in 1 was the forest navel, for 2 it was the snow starting area.
Honorable mention to perplexing pools in 1, which felt really strange and distinct from everything else in that game, especially with the ethereal music in that level.

man-at-legs in 2 wouldn't be nearly as bad if it wasnt surrounded by water
At first I thought Id hate Oatchi in 4 but the fact he is an avenue to ferry AND combat over water is actually really cool. In Olimar's challenge I beat one of those giant walking things over a pool of water using yellows and just grabbed them back up before they drowned.
