Also is there any advantage to digital vs. analog? Or do you just basically only go with analog if you plan on using it with a CRT?

A MiSTer doesn't cost $600. A DE-10 Nano costs something like $200, and that's all you need to get started. Add on a memory stick and a USB hub for less than $100. If you want to output to a CRT you need an analog I/O board, that should be around $50 or so. A fancy case like what's pictured in the OP would be $80~, but you don't need it. OP paid a premium to have someone else source it all for him and put it together (which itself is an extremely simple process, the boards just slot together).

modern PCs are absolute latency-fests. if an FPGA in a box eliminates those sources of latency (i'm dubious because of the USB ports) then that's all well and good.

I have a PS1 with plenty of games connected through RGB scart to a 14'' CRT TV and an SNES with only a few
I also have a 120hz TN monitor that's fairly old and not the best latency wise
I tried emulating on PC with beetle psx core (not hw) in retroarch, none of that runahead nonsense, just fullscreen exclusive with BFI
I can't tell the fricking difference if I try on any game I tested. I spent a few evenings trying to justify this shit. This is on a PC with the oh so bloated Windows 10 and a dated but still fairly modern CPU/GPU. >modern PCs are absolute latency-fests.
They absolutely aren't. My dualsense respond in under 1ms. USB poll rates can be OC'd to hell. There's no latency issue on PC even in windows 10/11
The actual latency bottlenecks are low framerate and vsync, the game's inherent lag that can happens, and then the latency of the emulation itself. But as far as PC hardware is concerned you can start with literally almost 0 lag
You will need Vsync on a CRT btw. Modern emulators meanwhile can use VRR=freesync, something a Mister can't do. Mister also cannot use runhead while emulator can. All in all it's demonstrably feasable to beat real hardware latency with a modern PC emulator and modern hardware.

USB by standard has a 10-15 ms delay, when they mean 2ms delay is how close to that standard something is, and you can't get away from it because what adds the delay, is having digital info lines + energy lines on the stnadard, wich is what makes it universal. The only way to get around it is to use a ps/2 periferial because that is an analog input, and doesn't have deal with the digital info, also that is not how a mister woirks it deosn't need vsync because it will never out above what the console uses. It outs only what the selected console needs because that is the whole point for accuracy

This is outright false. I have tested games where button to pixel input lag is lower than 15ms for the full chain (controller lag, supposed """USB lag""", display lag, and game lag). DualSense has literally <2ms of controller lag.

What I can tell you is that it's really nice to use, and if you are wanting to use a CRT over component or VGA it's unquestionably a better value than dealing with original hardware. Whether or not it's a better use of your money and time than just using emulators on PC is up to you. I personally hate Retroarch, and I always have, shit was way nicer when I could just use standalone emulators for everything. MiSTer is definitely more pleasant to use than Retroarch, and more accurate, while retaining most of the features that you might want from Retroarch (depending on the core). I'd suggest watching some videos about it, particularly the My Life in Gaming episode (if you have the time): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhT6YYRH1EI

Gamesack also did a good video on it, though less detailed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dibLXWdX5-M

VideoGameEsoterica has a nice ongoing series of videos on it, including setup guides for a lot of old PC systems like the Sharp X68000.

Yeah, there were a lot of advancements in the shader presets after that video was made which makes them easier/better to use. VideoGameEsoterica is better for up-to-date information on the MiSTer, but I still think that My Life in Gaming episode is a good way to get informed on it before deciding on buying anything. The GameSack video is even older and way out of date, but still a good video.

100% accuracy would require the original hardware. I'll take running commands in my console to play a game over spending $600 on an over priced sbc running FOSS.
Hell, even buying that box is moronic, considering the DE10-Nano devkit is $225.

              >It uses roms
Wouldn't 100% accuracy would be inserting the game into the machine?
I'll stick to mednafen / vbam and pcsx2.

Software emulation is just as good if not better for any console or retro computer that those boards can emulate.

Any issue you seen in a tradition emulator you'll also encounter on those things, because it's not a limitation on the software, but lack of documentation on the game or original hardware and nobody has figured out a way to replicate the feature correctly.

      >Literally has no emulation input delay (0 frames of delay) due to run-ahead features
this is not even remotely true. run-ahead is only supported by certain cores, is very intensive to run, causes very uneven frame pacing even when you well exceed the performance requirements, increases input lag variance, cannot remove the v-sync input lag inherent to fixed refresh-rate displays when used with RetroArch (the alternative is unplayable screen tearing), and cannot remove any more than (inherent game lag - 1) frames of input lag.

Oh no, he's a moron. Runahead will give you lower latency for zero dollars.

Runahead can only remove the game's inherent lag and can't do anything to improve vsync lag if not on a VRR display (3 additional frames on top of everything else). Runahead also causes input lag variance (arguably even more important) to increase substantially, and frame pacing/timing to be significantly worse.

Runahead is really only useful on high-end VRR setups for games that have high inherent game lag (4-5+ frames) in the few cores where you can even use that much runahead while still maintaining constant full game speed.

Frame advance is not indicative of real time lag. It doesn't factor in controller lag, display lag, V-Sync lag, or processing time. Unless on a VRR display, RetroArch has multiple frames of V-Sync lag on top of everything else. Also run-ahead causes frame pacing and input lag variance to worsen substantially. In my tests, run-ahead improves input lag average by a half frame less than the number of run-ahead frames.

The best (and really only) games to benefit from run-ahead are those that have high lag inherent to that specific game and run on a core where you can use 3+ frames of runahead without performance impact (but always 1 less than the inherent game frames of lag).

Battle Garegga is a good example. 5 frames of inherent game lag, and FB Neo can have a ton of run-ahead and still run full speed. The frame pacing and input lag variance worsen, but this is offset by the benefit of 4 (3.5) frames of run-ahead. Unfortunately the most laggy games are on N64, Saturn, PSX, PS2, GCN, etc. that all don't support 1+ frames of run-ahead

I can only assume you're an enthusiast/purist and can only stomach the most accurate ways to play old games. Then I guess it makes sense. It's cool but expensive as frick. A more reasonable way to play those games would be to just use emulators on a PC of course, I'm certain you could spend that $600 on a PC which could emulate all those old systems you can run on the FPGA, but not quite with hardware-level accuracy I suppose.

  12. 1 year ago

The MiSTer was designed around HDMI output, that was its original purpose. The analog I/O board is only useful for outputting to a CRT, and also has the drawback of blocking your second memory slot (not that you need it). Also, for the record, I used to run my MiSTer on a 20” PVM side-by-side with a 4K OLED, and eventually I ditched the PVM in favor of the OLED. Personal preference though.

Also, you didn’t waste your money. MiSTer is a lot of fun, and I have played more old games to completion since getting one. I was a long time emulator enthusiast since the 90’s, and also have a lot of original hardware, but I prefer the MiSTer over both. You will understand once you start playing with it. Be sure to get the update_all script and look into its options menu.

FPGA solution for emulating a lot of different systems, without the homosexualry of projects that come out of a place like Analog where they pretend that you aren't trying to use ROMs. Frequent updates bring both new features and new cores to the project, it can currently emulate dozens of consoles and old PCs, as well as hundreds of arcade boards. Nearly everything from the PS1 and earlier, with the Saturn core currently in beta. Great way to play old games on a CRT or modern display (or both at the same time, if you want). Cheaper than buying a bunch of flashcarts and cables for even a handful of old consoles. Wide compatibility with accessories and controllers.

If you just want to play old games for free, just get into emulation. MiSTer is for enthusiasts who also don't want to be beholden to collector homosexualry.

What's the cost of an NES flash cart, plus the mods and cables necessary to output over both HDMI and component? What's the cost of doing the same for a TurboGrafx-16 (and likely tracking down a TG-16), on top of recapping it? Same for the Genesis + Sega CD? Master System? SNES? PS1? Saturn? Neo Geo? Game Boy? Game Boy Color? GBA? Game Gear? Countless arcade boards?

Putting together a MiSTer costs about $400 for one that is decked out with a USB hub, an I/O board and a memory stick, and you don't really need the I/O board unless you're using a CRT or want to use original controllers. Just a few consoles set up with a flashcart and good video output can outpace the price of a MiSTer.

I have absolutely no idea what your thought process in this is, anon. If your goal is to get the most accuracy out of the games you play on the actual hardware. If money is a concern you might as well just build yourself an emulation device for much cheaper, which is just what this thing is anyway in the end of the day.
The only reason to get this is if you're allergic or deadly afraid of screwdrivers.

          Anonymous

I have plenty of original hardware, mostly from when I was a kid, but once you get into slightly less mainstream systems things become prohibitively expensive. Just getting a decked out TG-16 would be more than a MiSTer. A Super HD System 3 PRO is $320, that's already more than the the price of what you would need to have a MiSTer that could do that and more. Go ahead and tack on anywhere from $150-$400 for a TG-16/PC-Engine, depending on what model you're looking at. Now go ahead and take that apart and recap it because the caps that they used were junk and almost certainly dead.

That's just one system, and you're already outside of the price of a MiSTer. Now go do the same for a Neo Geo. How about an Amiga? How about the hundreds of arcade boards that you can play through the MiSTer?

what's so special about the mister that you feel you can't get the same results with a computer? It's still just emulation, I don't get your point, maybe I'm missing something?

              Anonymous

It's virtually indistinguishable from playing on the original hardware (at least with cores that have finished development), and it is effortless to output to a CRT and have it look and play literally identically to the original hardware. I have used emulation since the 90's, and I would never tell someone that it's a bad option, but the MiSTer is objectively more accurate and frankly it is less of a pain in the ass to use than Retroarch is these days.

I'm not trying to convince you to get into MiSTer, especially if you are very casual about old games and only play them now and then. It's a solution for enthusiasts. I've done it all, emulation, original hardware and MiSTer, and I enjoy the MiSTer the most out of the three options and I wish that I had gotten into it earlier because I could have saved myself a few hundred dollars (and a whole lot of headaches) compared to what I had spent on some accessories for some of my original hardware to get them doing what I wanted.

While I understand his point, not just that. People selling these parts for that specific purpose are making money on the basis that you're only going to buy this hardware for this particular project. People hear about MiSTer and they don't go "oh I'll just buy whatever wherever", they instead reach these particular places and buy this particular hardware.

But there are lots of different, unrelated people making this shit. The MiSTer project itself doesn't profit off of Jimbo 3D printing a case and selling it on Etsy.

The point is I can shill and sell kits on a store specialized for that. For MiSTer to be shilled as "a product" the people behind the project don't have to be the actual shills. It's in my interest to promote a project if it's going to help me sell particular kits of hardware.

if i see blatantly shilled content, i'm going to shit on it every single time, and there's nothing you can do about it.
the quality of the product itself is irrelevant if you have to suffer the same shill lines repeated ad nauseam bundled with the same pics, over and over
if your product demands 24/7 spam to find some kind of audience, it's not a product worth existing.

But what is the advantage of shilling this thing. There is no money being paid, and if there is, I'd love to get in on it.
Devs don't make any money off of it. The things that the DE-10 nano was built for wasn't even games so Terasic shilling doesn't make sense. You can kick and scream shill as is your shitposting right but use your brain a little. It's like screaming shill for an abandonware game

                FPGAs are reprogrammable circuits.
In emulation they will mimic chunks of a system's hardware, not the whole board. They'll also do so imperfectly.
If you actually give a shit about accuracy by a console. If you don't, just use your PC.

I will agree that buying a pre-made MiSTer is ill-advised, though a lot of people that are new to the project don't realize it because it is deceptively easy to get a DE-10 Nano. It always looks like they're sold out, but Terrasic usually ships them in a few days, regardless.

I can see this being useful for replicating arcade games with good accuracy and being able to use light guns easily. Otherwise, every system now has near perfect emulation on PC and 99.9% of people will be satisfied with that. On top of that, there will never be an N64 core for this thing unless you want to spend $1000+ on a better FPGA in the future. I just don't see the point unless you're sure you regularly have these niche use cases.

The FPGA itself isn't what's stopping them from developing an N64 core, from what I understand. It's something about the memory bandwidth, at least that's what I remember hearing. Not that it matters, either way the DE-10 Nano isn't suitable for it (at least presumably, there was a time when they thought that the SNES/PS1/Saturn were all impossible, and that turned out to not be true, and now we're getting the CPS3, which was also considered to be impossible not too long ago).

        64-bit architecture?

          Anonymous

From what I understand that isn't the issue. Every time that I have looked into it, it's always the memory bandwidth. The way that the N64 could access its RDRAM with such low latency, and that the CPU and GPU could access it at the same time. I'm not a hardware engineer though, just a layman. The GPU of the N64 also may be too complex, it has about 2.5 times as many transistors as the PSX GPU.

Well here's hoping that that guy moving the mister project to another FPGA produces happy accidents and discover that the new fpga board they moved to has some more horse power that would open up more core development.

The cool thing is that there are already cores under development that can't be used on the DE-10 Nano, and the N64 is one of them. From what I understand a nearly complete N64 FPGA core already exists.

Like I said though, it's not something that will work on a DE-10 Nano so it's not going to be a part of the MiSTer project anytime soon; that guy may have been trying to make his own FPGA console, similar to an Analog NT, I'm really not sure.

That's latency on monitor playback, something hugely different from keeping your own time.
Latency on monitor playback causes notes to double up as you hear them play naturally and then through the monitor

It's just that with the lofty claims of superiority, I want to see it to believe them. If memory serves me right the people and youtube channels who do a lot of testing like gaymers nexus never did some side by side comparison (maybe they're coy about touching on emulation and possibly dabbling on ROMs and piracy or some shit), I'd love to see whatever FPGA versus Snes9x (as a old stable emu that runs on absolutely anything), vs stable version of bsnes versus latest development version of bsnes

Do other consoles have emulators that are as accurate as BSNES? Because the MiSTer supports a lot of systems, many more obscure than the SNES.

            Anonymous

I think most emulator devs think more open platforms with evolving hardware (like PC and mobile) are just more inviting for emulation development. Sure one could spend time optimizing the frick out of certain emus for Nintendo DS, but then what's the point when most people will have an iOS and Android device with them rather than a NDS? Despite most of those mobile devices not having buttons and not being as portable as a DS, and the perspective of newer hardware grunt being able to solve some emulation woes must be interesting too. Working for old handhelds and hardware sure must feel like working on a dead end

              Anonymous

I didn't mean an emulator that ran on SNES, I meant an emulator that is as accurate as BSNES for emulating SNES. BSNES is extremely accurate. The MiSTer project has cores for other things, like the Sharp X68000 which may not have emulators with the level of accuracy of BSNES.

                Anonymous

bsnes requires quite the hardware compared to Snes9x and emus that don't care about the whole cycle accurate thing, I suppose it would be a safe guess the limitations of hardware, including FPGAs may be a hindrance to autistically-accurate emulation

It does depend on the game itself. I'm not fond of playing certain platformers with tons of input lag, but I have a harder time telling the difference with some 3D games. I think the issue is that it's treated as a thing where it's either "massive lag" or "no lag". It's treated as if you're basically playing sonic through stadia if you're not absolutely eliminating every source of input lag possible. I've not found lack of responsiveness when emulating stuff as long as I use decent emulators.

You overpaid. Also, go ask /vr/.

    >Also is there any advantage to digital vs. analog?
Analog IO has limited colors due to bandwidth limitations, but that only becomes a factor in PS1 cutscenes IIRC. Digital on the other hand has you rely on chink HDMI to VGA converters, custom cables and add latency (don't 'b-b-but' me, I've seen videos of side to side CRTs where Direct Video was a frame late).

    >Or do you just basically only go with analog if you plan on using it with a CRT?
Pretty much. There's talk of requiring two ram sticks moving forwards (and a literally unnoticeable difference in audio for the PS1 core currently), but it doesn't matter for now. No point future proofing even if there was an argument for it with how often hardware is revised.

As for the others, Retroarch is a pain in the ass for everything and not even remotely as efficient. Filters are shit, stop trying to make a troony out of your LED monitor, it will never have the vibrancy or motion clarity.

MiSTer has them beat in cost, convenience, size/space requirements, controller usage, extra features, and display hookup.

With MiSTer, you can use any USB controller you want or original controllers with no additional lag with SNAC.
With MiSTer you basically get the display and lag benefits of an expensive Retrotink 5x for free.
With MiSTer, you don't need dozens of consoles with dozens of respective everdrives.
With MiSTer, you don't need a bunch of space and cabling for all these systems.
With MiSTer, you get additional features like save states and filters and CPU overclock to remove slowdown.

MiSTer is basically like literally having all of your retro consoles in one small form factor playing *exactly* as they would play with the same exact timings and input lag, except even better because you can also connect them to a modern display with ease and no additional lag. Even a single niche console + everdrive is already nearing the cost of a MiSTer.

      not original hardware
you can just emulate on your pc

Emulators have a massive V-Sync input lag on fixed refresh-rate display, incorrect core timings, and are less accurate. They are also a massive pain to hook up to CRT with any modern video card. Also MiSTer is a much smaller form factor.

It's crazy how you can display the advantages many times over and people still just refuse to accept them. You can lead a horse to water yada yada

If you want to play retro consoles in their original form exactly as intended, while also using a CRT (or even switching between different displays), mister is a godsend. If you don't care about hacky, inaccurate emulation with tons of lag, then stick to emulating on your cell phone and just try to act like that additional 50ms+ over original hardware just isn't there ok?

The actual internal components are 1:1 as original hardware. That's literally the whole point of FPGA. The game, the display, the controller, (You) the player, all think and act like they are connected to 100% original hardware. Because well... they essentially are just with a different name.

No, it's mimicking original hardware based on the best guesses of random autists without actual documentation
                You know. Emulation.

They literally decap the boards and document them in the process of creating these cores. That's the whole point.

That’s an idealised take on how you would hope every core has been developed. In reality a tiny number of cores are made from decapping the chips and even those are still not bug free. Most cores were made from existing software emulation documentation, the SNES core dev didn’t even have the console but was still able to make a core thanks to all the work that had already been done. Cores being perfect 1:1 recreations of original hardware isn’t something the majority of devs are trying to, Jotego said the aim of his arcade cores is to get things to behave as they would on real hardware, but it doesn’t matter what is happening under the hood to make that happen. The GBA core dev said he isn’t interested in making the MiSTer core cycle accurate as that isn’t necessary to get the games running. If decapping chips was the aim then MiSTer would be absolutely nowhere, you wouldn’t have a fraction of the cores that we have now, that level of accuracy is a long way away yet.

even the newest PS1 core is already more accurate than any emulator and keeps 100% exact frame perfect timing with original hardware. This is just cope.

Anything older than that i havent noticed emulation issues except for mega drive sound but that was 15 years ago and is probably fixed
and if i dont notice issues (You) wont either
Also making this stuff for crts is neat but crts will die long before this emulation box

        Holy based.
        But here's the real question:
If you don't have a crt won't emulator filters still be more accurate to the actual experience? Saturn especially uses crt quirks for transparency everywhere.

          Anonymous

The MiSTer has some filter options which are pretty nice. Also, for the Genesis there is a composite blend effect that you can turn on to get some of its transparency effects working, like the waterfalls in Sonic. There is even an adaptive composite blend effect which attempts to target only objects where such a thing would be beneficial (so that you can keep the rest of the image sharp), though it is not perfect. I posted a video earlier where the effect was being used:

The adaptive composite blend for the Genesis was a pretty cool feature addition. Works pretty well, though not perfectly.

I don't know if such an effect will be implemented with the Saturn core however, that was specific to the Genesis core.

and I used to frequent emulator forums back in 2009 where I would complain about audio crackling every 5 seconds on a shitty emulator when everyone would tell me to frick off like it wasn't a problem, but this is on a whole new level. Always remember "don't let perfect be the enemy of good". There is of course a point where emulaion quality and input lag are unacceptable, like the absolutely unplayable Cotton Saturn Tribute or the state of NSO N64 at launch, but I promise that there's such a thing as Good Enough and you won't hurt yourself by enjoying it for what it is

Emulationgays just download Super Mario World, play until 2 stages after the first Castle and quit. Won’t complain because it was “””free””” but seethe at the idea that emulation is an imperfect solution that could be improved.

      THE MISTER IS NOT
the everyday product recommended for everyone to play their old games on. Emulation is more than enough for the 99% of gamers who want to play the same top 10 games

      THE MISTER IS
accurate to the point of replicating the CPU cycles of hardware. A good value product as a near-replacement to retro-hardware because it’s nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. It also allows for integer up scaling and digital output for all these consoles which would otherwise require hardware mods for every single one. Something that is way harder to do for most consoles and often involves irreversible mods to the console.
