    1) don't start copying blueprints from the internet
    2) don't start watching people with 6000 hours in the game on youtube just to take their layouts
    3) Play the entire tutorial - the second half of the campaign starts to feel like old school starcraft
    4) make defenses or the bugs with frick your shit up
    5) make more of everything than you think you need; you're bad at predicting the future/estimating how much you need because you don't know what you don't know.
    6) the point of the game is automation - if you're constantly building shit by hand then you're doing it wrong. Handmaking anything is slow, and it requires you to keep a bunch of resources in your pocket
    7) If you just started steel then congratulations - you're running out of iron everywhere. Iron is king in the early game. Copper is king in the late game
    8) stop making green circuits by hand idiot - automate it.
    9) your turrets ran out of ammo 5 minutes ago. why are you feeding your turrets by hand? why are you handmaking your defense?

I've seen some streamers play it before, is there even a point to using blueprints before having those drones that construct things??? Also, are the longer underground tunnels than like 4 tiles?? currently I have these big arteries of materials but they need to only be a few tiles thick so that I can build underneath etc

        Anonymous

Undergrounds get longer with each tier. Yellow is the shortest and T3 blue belts being the longest undergrounds.

ok cool, that's very helpful to know. thanks

        >is there even a point to using blueprints before having those drones that construct things
Not really. I guess they could be used to plan further expansions. I highly recommend start using them once you've unlocked robot ports and enough speed for them.

        1) Yes, if you want to 'see' what you're going to copy and paste before you make it. Yes, if you want to "reserve" room for stuff you haven't built yet by putting down blueprints that you can see

        2) Yes undergrounds are slow, 4 tiles long max; red is faster and 6 tiles, blue is fastest and 8 tiles. You're gonna live with red for a long time because blue requires oil-based products.

        3) the arteries that you're building, the main bus...don't go insane with those. If you played enough of the tutorial you know that trains move resources way faster than belts. Don't let your belts become pic related

          Anonymous

Nothing insane yet, but I why would trains being faster matter at all? Isn't it all just purely about the production speed? or does the constraint go from production speed to travel speed later in the game or something?

            Anonymous

because without trains your shit would look like this

what would trains change? I don't understand, aren't they basically just faster belts?

                Anonymous

Not only can trains carry more throughput than belts, they deliver faster and use up only a modicum of the space required for full belted lanes.

because it easier to move or add rails than belts

A single rail can transport all of this faster and without breaking a sweat

                Anonymous

you can only move up to 2 different resources on 1 belt
a rails can move any kind of train, so a rail can move every resource around

do they need to be a complete circuit? or can I have two locomotives and just go along one straight line?

                Anonymous

you can have one locomotive on each side, but you basically need to make pairs of rails with each side in one direction. how else would you have multiple trains on one track?

You need trains because you play Factorio and are therefore Autistic.

My advice is to make sure to produce more than you need. Keep an eye on the biters & your defences too. They add so much depth to the end and it's satisfying to use your weapons on them.

            Anonymous

            Ores are far away
If you wanted to ship it by belts, it would take way too many resources for the good belt variants, or take positively forever with shit yellow ones, during which biters mutate

            Anonymous

Trains have highest throughput. Consider that you have exhausted nearby patches and now mine about 6-8 blue belts of ore in total from 10m patch far away from your base. Theoretically you can lay down belts all the way, but even disregarding insane resource costs, it will look horrible and be even worse for when you may want to alter logistics. Trains are also them most flexible method of transportation, same rails network serves for everything and can easily be altered or appended to. Learn how signals work right now, and it will save you lots of time and nerves.

Setting up signals scratches an itch real well.

    >When should I start using blueprints?
When you get access to construction and logistic robots. You can use Ctrl+c to copy a section of your factory and Ctrl+v to paste it down somewhere else. If you already have an area that makes green circuits you can just copy paste it to save yourself some time instead of rebuilding the entire thing when you need more.

Use blueprints all you want but do not take blueprints from the internet yet.
For your first playthrough you should just do your own stuff and have fun. Once you start seeing optimal designs on the internet you will end up copying them all the time and layouts become a solved problem. Don't deny yourself the FUN of discovering your own solutions, at least for the first playthrough.

As soon as you make them

as soon as you unlock green modules lvl1 put 1-3 assemblers to produce them and insert them in everything (miners first, oil shit second)

leave space between factory blocks so it will be easy to change things
if you are pocket crafting something a lot, automate it - either immediates (circuits / wire) or ideally the whole thing
research robots as soon as possible and spam the shit out of them, they are awesome
dont worry too much about doing things right, once you get bots you can just delete your janky starter base and replace it with something better. you will see what i mean once you get them

you should also know the basic bus layout for factories, basically you have a bunch of belts with materials running parallel and factory blocks perpendicular to them, see pic if that makes sense
for larger scale factories you will need trains or at least dedicated transport belts, but for small scale production it's a very convenient way to organize things without needing to plan ahead too much

    >When should I start using blueprints?
When you have something you want to copy. E.g. a train loading or unloading station, you probably need one for each resource unless you started with a lot of each.

Biggest piece of advice I could ever give is, you'll never have enough circuits. Dedicate entire patches of copper and iron only to green circuit production. Have at Least 10 plastic plants starting out for red circuits. Expand greens as needed when you get to blue.

Factorio always has two main phases: the "starting base" phase (usually pretty spaghetti if you're new) and the "final base" phase when you figure out how to make things more efficient and compact. For a starter base it looks perfectly fine and viable, but ultimately don't get too attached to it and don't be afraid to tear down everything if you want to start over.

you will want to increase the lanes of iron and copper
4 lanes of iron and 2 lanes of copper is generally the best

test it by putting 8 items on one track.
should end with exactly 1 item on each output track.

So when one gets bots, are belts useless for the most part?

      Anonymous

I have never used logistic bots for automation. Even when making infinitely scalable 1k+ spm setup I only employed them for few utility things, like having trains fueled. I don't even know if there are situations where they are better than belt logistics, maybe there are some like super high speed unloading, but average player doesn't even think about it.

You can make it just fine. It will probably be not as good throughput wise for basic items like plates, and if will cost frickton of resources to make all those bots, but it will work.

          >bots only
          >no tracks

i heard people say bots are more UPS friendly than belts. Not sure how they could possibly stack up to trains, but im pretty sure they are friendlier than the inserters that fill the trains.

                >i heard people say bots are more UPS friendly than belts
This was somewhat true like 4 years ago, it's no longer the case, belts now use multithreading (each belt network is it's own thread basically) so they are way more performant.

damn its probably been that long sense ive really played this game

I did train + bot megabase like a year ago, not a single belt there.
Got to 2300 Science per minute before FPS started going below 60 so it's totally doable.
I used single purpose isolated bot networks supplied by trains in city block type grid.
It's critical that you use small, isolated bot networks otherwise you'll run into performance bottlenecks very fast as you scale up.
