Katanas in elden ring dlc

The katana was made of what Europeans called "lord's steel."

They didn't want to use it because of the high amount of carbon, which would turn their sword into a brittle rain of steel fragments (it would break). The japanese would use this function as a last resort to shower their opponent with lethal metal.

The Japanese bent the steel to remove the carbon and the sword had a hard extremely sharp edge and a flexible back, which made it less likely to break, but still very fragile.

The katana was lighter (per inch) or faster than European swords.

A katana can cut off a head easily easier than the viking sword can.

A katana is capable, no matter what, of cutting through European armor.

European swords couldn't, but they could use a method called a half sword to kill or disable knights, while a samurai with a katana had a good chance against a fully armored knight.

In terms of practicality, the European sword loses, for all the amount of things you can use it for it master of none.

It's longer, so you might kill a samurai before he has a chance to hit you.

It has a heavier pommel and hilt, so the blade is slower and you can strike armor with it.

It is much stronger and more flexible but it's also heavier.

Also remember that "modern" katanas are usually made with European and American steel, due white people not understanding good Japanese steel.

Worthless in an actual army, basically a weapon for fighting in small confrontations that guards or police would typically see. Similar to rapier being technically amazing but no good when you have to fight with allies and enemies who all know how to fight and in large numbers.

Nah the scimitar is more likes sword and lighter and slimmer. A great dao is heavy and thick so it could pack a fricking punch.

          Anonymous

That's just simply wrong. Scimitars were thin the blade way (to actually cut) and very thick laterally so you had an incredibly solid backbone for your cutting edge, and rather than shatter like other swords, they could bend to almost any angle and spring back undamaged.
Scimitars were a triumph of physics that few of the people who used them even fully understood.

Katana swordsmanship is inherently inferior because it has no back edge. It's infinitely faster to harm with long swords for the reason it's double bladed.

its amazing how much israeli media did a number on european history
the high-late medieval knight was practically undefeatable in 1 on 1 combat, maybe with only exception of horse archers if horses are allowed
    >completely impervious to slashing attacks
    >impervious to stabbing, except tiny hard to reach weak spots in the joints
    >impervious to arrows
    >trained from early childhood with multiple weapons, wrestling, horseriding, archery
    >physically bigger and taller than other peoples
the only nerf was that they were an elite class and not many of them existed

      >mythological knight
Knights were glorified tax collector's that were armored so they wouldn't get killed by the peasants they were extorting. Learning combat wasn't a thing for them and the reason people think plate armor is heavy and encumbering is because the primary users of it were out of shape tax collectors who put most of the burden on their poor horse.

europe was at war constantly even if it was small scale, people duelled, we know of knights in battles being effective, especially mounted ones even while outnumbered greatly, an armored knight would win 100% 1v1 against any other soldier/warrior before quality guns were developed

Late plate had shittier manufacturing than peak Milanese and German armours. They somehow lost ability to produce proper steal by that era, and had to rely on very heavy metal sheets. It was to be the doom for armour, since lighter units like Hussars, proved more effective in battle.

Knight's armor was developed and peaked at the height of the pike and shot era, crossbows fell out of relevance before plate armor did. Not even muskets were able to finish off good ol plate for a few hundred years.

I'm pretty sure most of this shit was debunked. The katana is pretty damn great at many things, but vs a dude in European armor it's going to lose its effectiveness hard. Just because the Japs love coping over WW2 by having katanas cut through tanks, planes and mechs in their media doesn't make this an actual thing.

In Dark Souls 3 the starting longsword was better than all the swords in the game, it's just in Elden Ring they decided to make katanas babby easy mode.
In all fairness greatswords are also this, instead of triggering bleed you just jump around slamming the sword on bosses heads instead.

Magnificent bait, not that it matters for vidya at all but this triggers my bullshido HEMA-based autism so in case anybody gives half a shit:
    >Katanas are heavy cutting weapons, practically like long-bladed axes. You'd use them with broad chopping motions.
    >Straight swords are usually made out of softer steel, so are flexible and less rigid, this makes them very unsuited for chopping.
    >If you were trying to cut a steak, you wouldn't swing your knife down on it like you're trying to chop down a tree, right?
    >Straight edged swords are slicing weapons, and the axis of motion on a slice is forward and back.
    >You'd use a straight sword either by thrusting or by placing the blade on a relatively less-armored joint (neck, armpit, elbow), and drawing it forward or backward to slice open clothing, flesh, and ideally an artery that disables your opponent.
    >This technique, coupled with half-swording where you grip your sword like it's a small polearm and use it like a lever, is how you'd try to bring a field plate armored opponent down, because swords most certainly could NOT cut through well made harness, and your best bet is either to dent them inward with a pommel strike, or topple them and plunge a dirk into an eyehole.
And finally none of this shit matters in vidya obviously because it's all just cool sweeping motions and reading frame data.
