It's interesting to note that they need interpreters but are there to interpret an even greater power that they aren't wholly accurate in interpreting.

The fingers have biases and resort to hiring mortals to try and pull the strings, such as their confessor police that popped up to stop Tarnished from actually using their second chance at life to not die in pointless wars.

The Finger Readers and other direct servants of the GW have no true devotion to Marika or the Erdtree, just the Elden Ring.
When will people learn that the Erdtree != The GW. It is Marika's own personal god tree thing and solely her bullshit.

      >But the fingers seem to want to protect it
The Fingers inside the Round Table are all but confirmed to be Marika's own personal fingers, as in the fingers that chose her as empyrean and assigned her Maliketh and shit. Wrong, there is the invade item you can use to invade other players. Its obvious fomsoft made it as an invasion covenant then scrapped covenants at the last second as well as left the quests unfinished, too bad, hopefully the DLC expands on it.

If the DLC expands on the factions in the main game for everyone regardless if they buy the dlc or not and gives a whole new area with 30 bosses to people who buy the DLC it would be pretty sweet and that sounds like something fromsoft would do.

yeah, you know how in some RPG games you can switch between multiple characters but when you're playing as one the others disappear? i just assumed that's what they were doing. they should've just made her sit at grace's with you though if that's what they were going for, and maybe the fact that she doesn't proves me wrong.

Fromsoft has been overly moronic by this idea of "oversimplifying storytelling" to death. She was cute but it was like hearing about someone moving away whose only communication you had with them prior was a dozen emails. More cutscenes were needed and Melina acted deadpan and hard to interpret for 90% of her interactions, which were supposed to feel meaningful. Unironically I partly blame the Japanese for being autistic on the idea of being intimate with girls

Farum Azula was actually the center of the map before the Erdtree. It was ejected some time before Marika took over and thrown by a tornado to the east. I'm not joking.

I guess in the final version it's just Melina teleporting you there. One of the last thing Melina says is that the world needs "Death indiscriminate." Then, she burns up, and teleports you to where you can unseal the Rune of Death.
The precedent for her being able to send you to place that you haven't been to before is when she teleports you to Roundtable Hold.

The problem is that you're still sent there when Melina abandons you on the Frenzied Flame path, though the fact that you survive self-immolation at the Forge also doesn't really make sense. Though maybe it's the 3 Fingers keeping you alive and sending you there? Maybe in-lore you're not even wholly "you" after your sacrifice at the forge, which is the precedent for the complete body hijack in the ending cutscene.

Daedicar's woe seems to imply that regular women can birth snake people if they engage in some kind of unspecified horrifying cenobite ritual sex. Apparently that's where rya came from

      Anonymous

There's two theories, either the World Devouring serpent Eiglay is either female and as a result of Rykard's fusion with it keeps producing unwanted children or Rykard is just raping women with a snake wiener and letting them live long enough to birth man serpents.

The latter is suggested only by Daedecar's Woe which talks about a depraved woman who birthed monsters and was flayed alive. Obvious Mt. Gelmir is notorious for being a torture den especially since Rykard was once the Inquisitor of the GO so this seems to make sense that he had this prostitute he continued to rape for a bit.

On the other hand though, the Serpent's Amnion seems to imply that the snakes were brought about in an unwanted birthing ritual. Raya evens tates that the manserpents have no place among man or snake, so it's hard to figure out of this means that if it was unwanted for the mother or unwanted for the serpent. Serpent's Amnion sounds like its referring to the snake as the mother, rather than a woman. Rykard isn't the serpent after all, he's just a part of it.

She's burned and bodiless because she is the gloam eyed queen and was defeated by Maliketh. That's also why she bears his mark on her eye and why the seal is broken and reveals her gloam eye in the frenzied flame ending, the only point in the game where she exists but Maliketh is dead.

She has no association with blackflame or the godskins though, and if she were killed by Maliketh ages ago then why would Marika guide the two of you through the whole game to burn the erdtree? Why would Melina want to do what Marika says?

                Anonymous

She fights with a black knife moveset and has an otherwise unexplained ability to manipulate the flames of ruin. She also wants to destroy the erdtree not only to follow Marika's will, but her own. Old habits?
                >and if she were killed by Maliketh ages ago then why would Marika guide the two of you through the whole game to burn the erdtree? Why would Melina want to do what Marika says?
Because Marika has been trying to undermine the fingers and the GW all along. You'll note that it was not Marika who slew the gloam eyed queen, but Maliketh, her appointed shadow. Marika's equivalent of Blaidd, a watchdog who exists to control their master as much as protect them. Marika and the GEQ were not actually enemies, quite the opposite.

Am I wrong or do the quests in this game suck? I found out after my first playthrough that a bunch of NPCs I encounter early in the game actually had questlines and you were supposed to find them somewhere but it never gives you any indication as to where they are. Did the devs expect you to look it up online?

if an npc has 9 places for you to find them you typically only have to find them in 3 to complete he quest. ie alexander quest you only need to find him at radahn, at mt gelmir, and at farum azula, to get all of his rewards that arent generic consumables.

Yes fromsoft likes super sekrit quests that are hard to figure out and take a community to complete but they chickened out like a week after launch when everyone complained it was impossible in a big open world so they changed most quests so you can skip steps.

it was more acceptable in demons/dark souls 1, when you actually had a good chance of bumping into NPCs at the right time for their quests, and i think that actually worked in a really cool way for those games. but elden ring for some reason mindlessly copies this quest design, like it does for a lot of other souls mechanics, and it sucks ass because the world is fricking giant and you couldn't realistically expect the player to bump into anyone at the right time

Nobody else is pursuing the demigods. Fia, Rogier, and D are all more interested in the undead. Corhyn and Roderika aren't accomplishing anything either. And then there's the other psychopaths who nobody wants to even associate with.

          >dedicates her life to the greater will by interpreting the two fingers who are envoys of the greater will

          >helps you to burn the erdtree, where marika and the elden beast reside
          ???????????????????

The Erdtree didn't become the foundation of the Golden Order until after Marika started dicking around with the Elden Ring. Its significance is overblown from generations of familiarity. Like most religions where people can't imagine the current status quo ever being different.

      >Because I still can't find a explanation as to how Gideon could farm two demigods before you.
Regardless of whether it was Gideon, Vyke, or someone else, the thing to remember here is that Demigod and a Shardbearer are not the same thing. A Demigod is any of Marika's children (including Radagon's), plus Godfrey for some reason. The only requirement to being a Shardbearer is somehow getting a Great Rune, like our Tarnished player character, or Rennala.
Demigods apparently all have Great Runes because they have the means to protect them. At earlier points, though, there could've been Great Runes that belonged to Shardbearers who were even weaker than Godrick, and that maybe even changed hands a lot. Shards like that would've been the first targets of ambitious Tarnished like Vyke and Gideon.
I think this has to be what happened if two shards had been gathered before, because the alternative is for a Tarnished to have gathered two that are known to us, and then given them up to the bosses we fight during the game. The explanation for that seems like it would have to be way more convoluted and convenient.

Marika's golden order features respawning after death. You only permanently die as a reward (getting absorbed into the Erdtree in an Erdtree burial aka going to heaven) or as a punishment (getting your existence deleted after death as a Tarnished aka going to hell). People who haven't been excommunicated from Marika's order, that is, people who can respawn, have Grace. Setting this shit up is why she sealed away the Rune of Death btw. You, the player, are a special Tarnished who has had their Grace restored to them. and thus respawns. All the shitter Tarnished you meet have lost their Grace and are thus on their last lives.

Its weird, they have Those who live in death right fricking there in the lore. But none of the "Hollow" soldiers and shit have a weakness to it.

Actually, a lot of undead enemies don't count as undead. Zombies, the rotting animated corpses, do not even count as Undead. The Skull Snails don't count as undead. Wraiths don't count either.

I'm actually wondering if the theory that the "hollow" soldiers actually are Those who Live in Death and we've been basing the idea that they aren't off of an inconsistent, poorly spread out damage bonus system?

          Anonymous

Those Who Live in Death are definitely a distinct thing(s). It's the Ghostflame and Death Blight stuff.
The rotting corpses are just people who've got super bad poison aids and scarlet rot
Shit like the aristocrats clothes seems to imply that the regular beef jerky you find walking around have just gone mad from being unable to die, but it's not quite the same thing as corpses which have come back to life. Presumably they can't die because the Rune of Death got removed, but in that case no one would have died for fricking hundreds of years, which is just something that is never stated or commented on.

Putrid Corpses have countless variations, some of the first you encounter in the game though are people who have washed up from a mass ship wreck.

There is no magic scarlet rot or Formless Mother period splurge to explain that, they're just animated corpses.

I'm thinking From was just lazy with the undead registration considering about half the undead enemies aren't on the list. Looks more like they just straight up ported divine weapon spread sheets from prior games, which was just skeletons and then added the odd ball slots to death birds and spirit caller snails of all things.

Literally all the Godwyn lizards or other mutants also aren't affected by the undead registration and gain no additional damage, though they're all probably weak to holy.

              >some of the first you encounter in the game though are people who have washed up from a mass ship wreck.
              Shit good point.

To me it feels more like they just made all the human enemies look like raisins because that's how it was in the last few games and failed to give it much thought. If they had just made them look like regular humans I'd have bought that reviving enemies is just a gameplay mechanic or reinforcements being sent from somewhere else; in the previous games the Undead Curse and the Fog were neat explanations for why enemies came back but it's not like there weren't a dozen other random animals that also just respawned, and Yharnam was meant to be crawling with people out on the hunt so it was easy enough to rationalise that you were encountering multiple pitchfork mobs. This time however it was like they just made everyone a zombie, remembered that the lore didn't actually say everyone was zombies, and then very clumsily shoved an explanation for it in one or two clothing sets.

Feels like there was a much bigger round of last-minute rewrites than even DS3. Like, there's the obvious general sentiment that the golden order stops you from dying, hence why the rune of death was removed. But does this mean people respawn after they die, or they're just immortal but still die when they're killed, and if so what determines the cases where people do come back? And does your character respawn or not? There's lots of conflicting NPC dialogues about the topic. I get the feeling that they weren't 100% comfortable with a lot of the material GRRM gave them to build the setting and were trying to figure it out right until the final deadline.

Anon, they removed the rune of Death which makes everyone by default zombies so their juicy souls can be eaten by the Erdtree to perpetuate blessing when the body expires.

But at the same time, they explain away (your) respawning powers as being within Marika's grace, which would imply that the rune of death being sealed doesn't mean you live forever it just means you get eternally respawned like a Souls undead when you die.

But it feels too moronic that literally everyone has been immortal for the last however many hundred years, seeing as Death was sealed right at the beginning of the Golden Order, and this is just never ever brought up outside one set of clothing.
Plus you're already slaughtering Demigods before you even unlock the rune again.
Destined Death being locked away seemed more like it just gave the Demigods immortality (hence why Ranni needed it to kill Godwyn and herself), not everyone on the damn planet.

I don't think it's something to patch out, it's clearly intended. Frostbite deals some % HP damage and while active it reduces damage resistance, so there's an advantage to keeping it on. If they removed these things about it and didn't let you reset either it would literally just be a worse bleed, since bleed deals more % HP damage.

You presumably respawn because Marika actually has your back. The other Tarnished who no longer see the guidance of grace presumably do not respawn, as a bunch of them die during the course of the game. The zombies are alive and live eternally in the sense that they do not die of natural causes, but like graceless Tarnished if they get destroyed I assume they're gone as well.

I don't remember seeing it, plus the animals in the game look perfectly normal, none of them are the desiccated living leftovers that the people turn into, which suggests they do not live eternally at all. You even get items which explain how some of them bear young and you can clearly see their young in the game as well, which also suggests that their lifecycles are not disturbed.

The "hollows" are the normal inhabitants of the Lands Between who don't die/reincarnate because the Rune of Death is missing and the Erdtree is fricked, so at least the ones who haven't been physically destroyed keep on living while still deteriorating slowly as time passes. Those Who Live in Death are the more classical definition of "undead" in the sense that they're actually reanimated remains of those who died before and they exist because Godwyn's soulless corpse, touched and corrupted by Destined Death, was buried at the roots of the Erdtree so his blight is spreading across the lands.

At least that's how I understand it.

this is the hard truth for anyone playing without a guide

It gets worse with each new game too. I bet there's literally not a single person in the entire world who got all of Sellen's quest in a single playthrough without looking up a guide at some point.

Mohg was my favourite boss, but I saw him at Elphael, Brace of the Haligtere yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for his exultation or anything.

He said "Oh, like you're doing now?"

I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "Tres! Duo! Unus!" and stabbing the air with his trident. I walked away and continued with my exploration, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to the boss room to fight Malenia, I saw him trying to walk out the Haligtree with Miquella in his arms.

Malenia was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Mohg, you need to put Miquella back inside the roots." At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and bought Miquella back.

When Malenia took Miquella and started placing him back inside his cocoon, Mohg stopped her and told her to give him Miquella's needle "to prevent outer god infetterence," and then turned around and winked at me. I don't even think that's a word.
I tried to fight Malenia for her Great Rune, but Mohg kept interrupting us by shouting nihil really loudly.

You getting slapped while casting the spell actually highlights one of my major beefs with the bosses: if they finish their attack, and detect you counter-attacking in response, their AI is programmed to unzip an additional attack, and depending on your weapon speed, you may be in for unavoidable damage. If you only attack during 100% safe openings you are either forced to play passive as all frick or are chained to spirit summons or shield countering. "Yeah homosexual that's a nice combo and all you've got there, but when the frick is it my turn to attack": the game.

Bosses chase you down really aggressively if they catch you trying to find distance. Things can obviously be optimized but what you did was pretty reasonable for a caster fighting the more aggressive bosses solo. Honestly the best way to handle bossfights as a mage is still the kamehameha, if you can get away with it. Mohg is actually really easy to do because of how he casually walks at you from the other end of his giant arena lol.

          Anonymous

what's your favorite boss and why is it Mohg?

Also protip: if you freeze an enemy, they can't be frostbitten again until the meter goes down. BUT you can forcibly reset it by hitting them with any fire effect. Like a fire pot or a fire spell. Freeze, then fire, then freeze again. I don't think they patched this out, and you can rack up insane damage like this.

            Anonymous

Yep, pretty sure the fire pot and extra frost proc ended up winning me the fight overall

does fire get rid of frost buildup as well or just when the frostbite has already hit?

            Anonymous

I don't think it's something to patch out, it's clearly intended. Frostbite deals some % HP damage and while active it reduces damage resistance, so there's an advantage to keeping it on. If they removed these things about it and didn't let you reset either it would literally just be a worse bleed, since bleed deals more % HP damage.

But at the same time, they explain away (your) respawning powers as being within Marika's grace, which would imply that the rune of death being sealed doesn't mean you live forever it just means you get eternally respawned like a Souls undead when you die.

            [...]
Everyone in the lands between have immortality, they have been hammering into your head that even small animals stop pro-creating

You are Tarnished, you don't have the blessing of the Erdtree so you are not immortal. Marika's grace just straight up Rez you.

You also don't 'kill' demigods like Goddrick, you probably can kill if you really need to such as by burning the body and bones to ghostflame but this is forbidden.

            >even small animals stop pro-creating
Where is this mentioned? I don't remember seeing it, plus the animals in the game look perfectly normal, none of them are the desiccated living leftovers that the people turn into, which suggests they do not live eternally at all. You even get items which explain how some of them bear young and you can clearly see their young in the game as well, which also suggests that their lifecycles are not disturbed.

All the women in power in this game are two-faces c**ts.

He probably knows Marika guided you there and as such assumes no good (from his point of view) can come from having her plan come to fruition. Then again Marika also guides you to meet Ranni, maybe he knows that too and attacks immediately to make sure the GO doesn't get Moon'd instead.

Marika is also Radagon so I dunno. I assume he's just the Elden Beast in avatar form or whatever

          Anonymous

Yeah, but if you put it that way the Elden Beast would want the Ring fixed too, wouldn't it? Maybe they just want it fixed exactly as it was before, not with other Mending Runes and shit, plus obviously they would not want the frenzy apocalypse or Ranni removing the GO entirely.

            Anonymous

The Elden Beast is the Ring itself, and with that in mind you can assume that whatever form the ring takes is reflected onto the beast. Since the Golden Order is meant to be eternal and unchanging, it'd make sense for the physical manifestation of that to fight against change

Honestly, unleashing the scarlet rot was worse than Ranni killing Godwyn. The rot's still spreading out of Caelid, isn't it? That whole situation is like if Chernobyl happened, but no one turned off the reactor.

Yes. They had to build a wall, but if the wall is broken, it will quickly spread like Dragonbarrow

Supposedly the only thing that stops (doesn't fix) scarlet rot is fire. So the knights patrolling Caelid burn shit, and set up fiery barriers. Honestly, first fricking priority as Elden Lord is figuring out a fix for that. I'm surprised people in Limgrave aren't freaking the frick out.

I like that you can see people in Caelid trying to observe the scarlet rot, like near Gael mines. It's clear they're actively trying to do something to help and you killing them is just causing more problems.

I also like the fricked up idea that the scarlet rod spreads over biomass in general, so if your corpse is left, like so many of those virulent piles of fricked up brain fungus, it will grow over you and you will spend immortality as conscious, alive matter trapped within living flesh. And that's what you're looking at when you see much of it, not just the foliage, but the massed bodies of warriors who never made it out.

Godwyn rot is basically polluting the waterhole at its source. His rot is everywhere, to the point that crabs in Liurna have his face on them and basilisks spreading the blight show up on the surface.
Everyone in ER sucks though. Goldmask, Alexander (Though the whole corpse pot thing is a bit on the grey side), the Smith, Wizardboy that dies a few hours in, and the ashes upgrade girl are the only people that don't plan on fricking everyone over.
