I always imagined it was because Mortal Kombat came out a little bit after Fatal Fury and cause of that stole away a lot of attention from SNK games.

    Don't Mexicans love it?

South americans love it because of the cheap nature of the game and ease of access.

You just literally need a computer that can run fightcade and an arcade stick or one of those consoles that can run it, then its all just training from there.

My understanding was that King of Fighters (bootleg) arcade machines were everywhere in South America back in the 90s/2000s

people went to the arcades to play with friends, and practiced at home the combos.
Imagine playing KoF 2002, an arcade game, the very same week it came out on your computer. This was also the time of cybercafe, so it wasn't uncommon to go there and play with friends for 2 bucks the hour.

I think the interchangeable cartridges made NeoGeo way easier to pirate/bootleg compared to other arcade machines, which led to it's popularity in the third world.

    Learning 3 characters
Maybe MvC2 is to blame because that's a team fighter the States was indisputably the best at so nobody had the time for KoF. People looooved their X-Men, and hell, it had SF characters in that too.

      Anonymous

true, team fighters have never been as popular. Apparently Tekken Tag Tournament 1 and 2 are the worst selling games in that series, and that's only 2 fighters.

If MvC and FighterZ didn't have Marvel or Dragon Ball characters then they'd have probably never have lasted.

        Anonymous

MvC2 and Fighterz really honed in on the most popular characters on TV during that day and age. Fatal Fury, Garou, and KoF characters really didn't stand a chance against what was on TV.

3 characters is what you'll be mostly learning anyways in a fighting game at least properly speaking, youn't be playing all of them at a solid profiency especially if they aren't simplified in terms of control schemes.

this is true, sounds stupid but is what scared most players away. KoF is a huge cast and learning them is intimidating.
Ironically is the teams mechanic what made SNK known at all, Fatal Fury and Art of Fight were fricking dogshit and only got good until Real Bout and Garou came out, and by that time people were already familiar with the cast.

KoF is mostly harder to get into because the combos are hard to perform.

      >Learning 3 characters
i dont quite understand why people who know how to play fighting games say this like they dont know how to use more than one character in every fighting game they play

        Anonymous

The general audience can barely grasp how to play a single character. It's a tall order to ask them to learn how to play three.
My personal issue with KoF is that I just never got attached to too many characters. Plus ranbus looked cool for the first 10 years, but now I just think it looks really fricking lazy. Especially since we've moved away from cool sprites.

im not talking about a general audience i mean people who actually know how to play them, homies like justin wong dont care about the "general audience" until the next game in the series they like is in danger of being made, so why is this constantly repeated by people this shouldn't even be an issue for

I guess people have their own biases against it.
It certainly looks uglier and I don't think much of the cast has gotten any cool additions in years. I only still really care to play a combination of Rock, Iori, and Kyo or something and that point, after literal decades, its just gotten stale if you weren't already on the KoF train.

i'm lazy and happy trolling people with the ugly characters.
KoF only has Chang and Choi, so not touching that trash.

      this
kofxv looks like dogshit and it looks like they didn't even TRY, like they rushed it out through recycling and assetflipping heavily and still having less launch characters than the launch version of the game it flipped the assets of, how is that even possible unless you were crunched for time that badly, and they couldn't have been because it was officially announced to be in development at evo 2019 and the game came out in early 2022, you have 2.5 years to not shit out an ugly game and yet you fricking did, and everyone should know the first impression is the most important one

and for those few that still bought the game anyway, they were frustrated by things like nonworking netplay/matchmaking or whatever

there's a maslow's hierarchy of needs in place even for this game and the bottom-most part itself wasn't even met (graphics), let alone the higher levels such as gameplay and meta and netplay

what a fricking disaster kofxv was and it's a worry if snk even learned from it

people who bring up kof 13 as something snk should've kept doing are funny when people still ignored 13 as much as they do today

something kofcucks can't seem to grasp
they're wondering why nobody sticks around or bothers and they're confused that anyone thinks it's ugly at all

Back in the day there wasn't really a whole lot of difference in popularity. But those were the days when fighting games didn't have big names and little names - you just had a bunch of little names, and one of those little names kickstarted it off.
SNK was pretty moronic for a long while though and didn't know how to cope with the shift away from arcades. They didn't want to be third party, but they didn't really want to invest in seriously being a first party either.
So they kinda wandered around town in a stupor like margot kidder with their dicks in their hands, getting picked up by random foreigners looking for cheap tricks, until they finally wound up in some arab chad's harem today.

At one point it was. SFIII wasnt as popular in its day. People only started caring after SF IV and the daigo parry viral video.
1998-2002 was peak kof popularity, only capcom games that matched it were the VS games.
