I played the demo disc of this as a kid numerous times, but have never played the actual game. I think I will have to tick it off my list this year. I remember it being pretty ruthless for a PS1 game.
First two games are one of a kind basically lightening in a bottle. The best cinematic platformers ever made. Better than Another World for sure. To be a PS1 owner and not own both games is ridiculous. They are must own. I enjoy Exoddus even more but Oddysee is still amazing even without the "all of ya" command and autosaving.
You can excuse Munch's Oddysee as 3D growing pains, but yeah, everything after that is trash. The remakes completely destroy the atmosphere of the originals, especially Soulstorm, and I wouldn't be surprised if they age worse than the originals.
Baby boomers and gen x unironically made better games.
Same with Donkey Kong Country, pre-rendering is its own beast.
Matthewmatosis has a good video on it where he compares the two techniques. In the originals if they wanted to add blood and rust to a backdrop all they had to do was paint over it, in the remake they would have to make a clean model and then a bloody model, so they didn't bother.
All they had to do was redraw sprites and backgrounds to make a HD version of Oddysee, but no, Just Add Water thought they knew better.

Strangers Wrath is a much better game than Munch's Oddysee.
If I really love Oddysee then I'll be sure to follow up with Exoddus, but I don't see myself playing anything after that. The PS1 is my favourite console for these types of games and their style.

Can you tell which one came out in the 2010s? :/
Even as a kid I was impressed by Oddysee's atmosphere and world-design. Isn't it weird how the people making the remake think they are somehow improving on the original aside from obviously higher-resolution textures? I guess some people would say the same even about the Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil remakes, though.

My mistake quick save I mean. That was a fantastic addition with the sequel. Literally just skip everything else Oddworld. Pretend it doesn't even exist.

Sorry for being so salty over it.

>those backgrounds
Sovl
Don't you mean GAMO?
I think the correct term is ludo, but kino is alright in this case since it's a kinomatic platformer.
no the correct term is gay, as in only gays use words like kino and ludo
Kino and ludo are Ganker memes that spilled over on Ganker and kept spreading like space aids elsewhere
>ludo are Ganker memes
how would you use ludo in a Ganker context?
I got some kino for you *rips huge fart*
Are the PS1 versions the best way to play these? I somehow have them on steam.
