Dev troubles. The hallway to the elevator was supposed to lead you to the mountains in the background but they didn't place them close enough or make the hallway long enough. Though I think the better question is "what the frick is happening with Dragon Aerie"? I like DS2 and defend Iron Keep being there but I have no idea for Dragon Aerie and how it is apparently next to shaded woods.

come on now. i played DeS back in the day as my first souls game and have fond memories of it but DS1 is definitely a better and more refined version of DeS. I would love a return to the DeS structure though and re-visitng Character/World Tendency without it being insanely shit like it was in DeS

            Anonymous

How are supposed to ever get white world tendency in DeS? It only goes up from killing bosses I've read and you only get 3 of those in a world and it gets resynced by the server so doesn't that mean you can only do it offline?

              Anonymous

yeah thats the thing its fricking moronic. its the only way to move the tendency towards white is to kill bosses while in human form. i think killing black phantoms too, but they only show up if your tendency is more black. that's the thing i hate about demon's souls is that the tendency system could potentially be really cool by adding variety to linear levels, but its very under-utilized and ridiculously obtuse with how you influence it. if they revisited it but with more ways to influence it and with more interesting effects it could be awesome.

              Anonymous

I thought server sync was a crapshoot that depended on what other people were doing at the time. Obviously this was usually dying but if people did git gud in your digital area you would get the highest tendency.

              Anonymous

On PS3 From would cycle weekends for full black or full white tendency with server sync. Doesn't Bluepoint do that too for the PS5 remake? If not, wtf.

there is plenty wrong with DS2 beyond that, the whole game plays like it is a fan game and not an official entry.

it should be extremely telling that they had to make an attempt at "fixing" the game with the Scholar of the First Sin release that also fricks up in many ways as well.

This, but also their willingness to come up with ideas that Miyazacki keeps shunning is another sad thing.
I loved the direction they had with Hexes, weapon buffs, the upgrade systems, Bonfire refresh candles and covenants.

They've not brought over much of anything except power stancing and even that is less impressive. Dark Souls 3 felt insulting with what they did to Hexes and Elden ring completely laughs at int/fai

I mean for fricks sake they didn't even reintroduce weapon/catalyst hybrids in ER.

    >The same thing
Marika's "betrayal" of Godfrey was a 4d chess move to keep him out of the divine spotlight, particularly the shattering, so that she could be saved when no one else in the lands between could possibly do that.

Nashandra was more like a Dark lord attempting to manipulate a faction of men who would return the world to another age of fire so that they would utterly fail and secure her at the seat of power.
    They're different.

Plus, I don't know why you used that image it's attempting to argue. The only reason Dark Souls II lore isn't given much appraisal is it very poorly implements the prior setting and Dark Souls III sort of ignores or belittles its lore relevancy.

It's basically easier to understand how the Dark Souls III setting works with DaS than it is to try and connect the dots between DaS and DaS II.

People still can't figure out if the no-face tree giants were supposed to be Gough type giants or a different thing.

Why did Nashandra even do that anyways? WHY IS SHE A “SHARD” OF MANUS? It’s so shoehorned in as a connection to DaS1. Manus was just a dude chilling with his pendant, then the Oolacile townspeople unearthed his tomb. He’s not a Machiavellian figure plotting the downfall of empires for the sake of a lust for power blablabla, he literally just wants his pendant and to take a nap.

The writers are stupid. If Nashandra was a servant/follower of Kaathe it would make so much more sense. She would be manipulating the current age monarch to weaken their kingdom, allowing her to take control and lead the world into an Age of Dark as the Dark Lord. Instead, they hamfist a Manus connection when Manus’ infatuation with the pendant was not born out of want/envy/greed/wrath/etc, but out of reverence and nostalgia for the memories the pendant meant to him.

But then, in DaS III, if you actually sacrifice your self to the flame. It doesn't even light. You self immolate like a little b***h. You can't beat that dead horse any longer.

Meanwhile if you let the Fire Keeper snuff out the flame, the world goes dark and she calls out to you comfortingly. The game clearly is telling you the correct answer, aside from becoming the King of Hollows.

In Oolacile dark sorceries there is a lot of references to the "nature of humanity" like how black fog represents man's violence against itself, or pursuers represent yearning.

I feel like the idea they had was that the concentrated dark soul of manus split into 3 women who embodied the worst of humanity. Granted, this shit was clearly thought of for the DaS II DLC since Femito Nashandra was a completely different boss originally.

          Anonymous

I agree with that assessment of humanity yearning, but specifically in the sense that it wants to be with more of itself. A nice detail of the big Humanity enemies that aligns with the Pursuers spell description is that they don’t actually attack you, they just touch you. They want to coalesce with the humanity you are carrying. This comes to a head in DaS3 where the Dark Soul has been pieced back together by Gael going around to gather everyone’s separated humanity.

The way DS2 connects to DS1 is the way it should be. Even better is how BB connects to DeS. Direct references rob DS3 of its own identity, just like reusing DeS concepts without justifying them in the game sours DS1's experience.

        ArcaneMaxxer

If DaS II was its own setting completely I'd see what you mean. It basically IS since despite references to Drangliec being Lordran in the future, it doesn't quite that narrative. Then of course DaS III retconned it.

Point is, it's still trying to claim it's the DaS setting. Hollow curse is still a thing, there are npcs like the Fimito and Minito, or Freja, which clearly reference Nito and Seath.
The Giants with the holes in their faces and the secret Vendrick stole sounds like an allusion to humans stealing fire from Gwyn's giants.
Then of course the DLC, like Elysium Loyce blatantly having the bed of chaos beneath it.

It insists it's connected to the DaS world, despite meshing less.

DaS III is more of a direct sequel, you can point out how each location is basically a future version of Lordran.

          >clearly reference
On the contrary, it tries to make the reference as vague as possible, especially with the Great souls being accessible at NG+ and only as a bonus. Old Chaos has basically nothing in common with Bed of Chaos aside from being round. This is the same kind of reaching as saying the DS3's big worm is Solaire because...well it has his spell, OBVIOUSLY it's him! DS2 has things that are way more obvious like Dark Ornstein.

          >DaS III retconned it
But DS3 directly supports 2's existence through items references alone. If we consider it anything more than them being out of ideas then there's no reason to say that DS2 was retconned when it's obviously canon to the world of DS3. Not to mention mechanically it has more in common with 2 than 1.

            >mechanically it has more in common than 2
Except, you know, how the engine? Which plays a huge role in how the character movement feels, the animations, physics, etc.? How all of that feels vastly closer to DaS1/DeS/BB/ER than 2?

Do you know why people are able to just mod in assets from BB/DaS1/DaS3/ER so interchangeably? Because they are very similar games under the hood. Animation mods, moveset swaps, porting entire enemies model, AI, and animations over? Oh, but all of that is meaningless because… backstab confirms and… uh… estus shards exist?

said. No, it doesn’t matter that minor things estus shards and bone shards exist or the removed restriction of 4 directional rolling when locked on, the game PLAYS like DeS/DaS1/BB/ER far more than it plays like Dark Souls 2. Your character. The enemies. The weapons. The things that you control and directly interact with during the gameplay. It could not be further from DaS2, which makes sense. DaS2 is notably different from every other game in the franchise.

It absolutely doesn't. You're talking about "game feel", I'm talking about game mechanics. You're actually contradicting yourself saying it's anything similar to DS1 while admitting gameplay is different right before that while also calling fricking entire healing system and your character control a MINOR THING, while also completely ignoring the fact that most of the combat features (healing while moving, lack of passive poise, reduced stamina cost of rolling, flashy movesets, separating special moves from R2 attacks, chargeable R2's and so on) were carried over from Bloodborne and couldn't be more different from DS1. Think about what you're posting before you commit to dying on this hill.

                >entire healing system
MECHANICALLY functions nothing like DaS2. DaS2’s estus is healing over time. It is instantaneous. There is no life gem item equivalent. Even Embers function more like Humanity as they full heal you unlike Human Effigies. The healing UPGRADE system is similar, whoopidy foo.
                >character controls
That’s my whole point regarding the
engine and animations and physics. Your character controls like all of the other games. It controls NOTHING like DaS2. You grab a Longsword in DaS1/3 and go naked, and you will have the same R1s, R2s, rolling attacks, running attacks, etc. Same animation. Same recovery time. Same hitbox. DaS2’s character does not control the same simply because it lets you roll omnidirectionally when locked on, because the roll itself is nothing like DaS3’s. The strafing of the character is nothing like DaS3’s. It doesn’t PLAY like any of the other games. Why? Different engine, different animations.

DaS III basically retcons Drangliec as a foreign land rather than Lordran, so it acknowledges it but distances it as well.
Plus Old Iron King being a Gwyn reincarnation is blatantly retconned by Gwyn being inside Soul of Cinder.

            >They keep it as vague as possible

Games can be enjoyable even if they have major flaws. I probably spent more time playing DS2 (1000+ hours easily across multiple platforms) than any of the other DS series games and I would still maintain that it's the weakest title in the series. It's a lot of fun but the visuals are a mess in a lot of places, the absolutely perfect and meticulous area design from the first game got blown to shit into frankenstein zone connections that don't make sense, the bosses are way too frickin easy, and a lot of the "challenges" feel cheap and stupid instead of rewarding. I still had fun with it.

It's okay to like something that's flawed. It doesn't require any mental gymnastics. You don't have to spend 10 years arguing about how it's some misunderstood masterpiece. It can have a lot of problems and still be fun. It's OK.

        Anonymous

I wouldn't call the area connections frankensteined, but is a step down from 1. How you feel about 2 is how I feel about 3 except I didn't put as much time into 3 as 2 or 1 since the combat is basically the only thing that 3 has when it comes to replayability. I prefer more viable weapons, more routes through the game, and fun builds as opposed to just having fast combat.
1 has the best map design, artstyle, and weightiness
2 has the best build variety, mechanics depth, and RPG focused experience
3 has the best action experience

I can think of 2 that are like that maximum (Dragon Aerie and Iron Keep if you argue the hallways are not long enough which is fair), and I can think of 1 in Dark Souls 1 (Ash Lake). Dark Souls 3 is a hallway that doesn't even try and just forces you to teleport at points so I can't think of any there though.

Attempting to criticize DS3 for doing the same thing is fruitless since they decided to create a lore reason it was happening and dig into it as an apology for DS2 being half finished and shitty.

                >Heide's tower down an elevator to a completely nonsensical different waterline in No Man's Wharf is the other one that is very blatant.
I didn't see it that way personally, half of Heide was under the waves and it makes sense to me that No Man's Wharf is where it is being connected to Lost Bastille by ship as well.

You have an ocean and a waterline in Heide, then you go underground into a tunnel, down an elevator, and have a totally different waterline down there that is also clearly connected to the sea. It's nonsensical.

Now that you mention it, yeah. For some reason I remember going up a couple small staircases or ramp in the tunnels but that isn't enough. But then again you do start going down from a high up tower so there is a bit of height allowance

DaS II has a full map of Drangliec where a little bonfire lights up at the location of each primal bonfire kindled. A lot of locations are meant to be rather distant despite being short distances between each other because every zone is a legacy dungeon that was intended to be set between an overworld.

I played it when I was 15 and less jaded. I was just excited to get more souls shit so soon after dark souls 1. Had a blast playing it.

But that was a good part of DS2’s lore? I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say the Nashandra stuff was bad.

because about a dozen schizos keep spamming the board doesn't signify any kind of quality in the slightest

Because its divisive and thus can sustain posts to keep threads alive. I actually really like DS2 but its hated by alot of people as well. FF12 is kinda similar. Its got alot of super fans but also a ton of people that hate it. Meanwhile FF13 which is universally disliked can barely stay alive without porn same with like ff6.
