Kojima tried getting Kurt Russell to voice Snake in MGS3, but he declined

>Kurt Russell has opened up about why he didn’t voice Solid Snake (or any of the Snakes) in Hideo Kojima’s original Metal Gear Solid, responding to rumors that he was offered the role.

>The Escape from New York and The Thing actor spilled the beans during an interview with GQ. He says he’s “a movie guy,” adding that, for him, it’s important to work on new characters rather than trying to provide new takes on old ones.

>“I wasn’t interested in expanding, financially, off of something that we had created, or that I had created in terms of character,” Russell added. “I get business people, sure. ‘We could do this with that, or we could do this with that.’ I look at it and go, ‘That’s not written by John [Carpenter]. That doesn’t smell right.’ John’s not here to do this with.

>I’m not going to do that. Let’s go do something new. Let’s go do something fresh. Let’s go create another iconic character rather than saying, ‘What can we bleed off of this iconic character?’”

Back in 2016, Hayter said he also heard they wanted to use Russell for MGS3
>“I had to re-audition for Metal Gear 3 to play Naked Snake. They made me re-audition to play Old Snake, and the whole time, they were trying to find somebody else to do it. I heard that Kojima asked one of the producers on Metal Gear 3 to ask Kurt Russell if he would take over for that game. He didn’t want to do it.”

I probably wouldn't want to star as a knock-off of a character that I already played, which was originally created by my best buddy. It would be like getting Arnold to play a cybernetic assassin called The Eliminator, but in this case the character is even fricking named Snake...

No, Solid Snake is just stronger plus more talkative and preachy. it doesn't make him better and that's evident in how his character's depiction kept downgrading with every new release. MGS2 snake is a shadow of the MGS1 snake. and don't even mention the husk that was MGS4 snake.

And if you replace Snake Pliskin with Rambo as the character's muse, the same applies for big boss. Kojima kept running out f juice with every new game and his character got stake as he had less and less content to leech from.

Kurt says he doesn't want to make something without Carpenter because he is loyal to the guy who created the character. And you are aware that Carpenter made Escape from LA right? At least the latter have capacity to to formulate moral structures and struggle internally by understanding they're doing evil. When you're a hypocrite you deny truth and therefore cannot have any structured system of moral values, because they shift with whatever suits you best at any given moment. People who lie are genuinely subhuman.

No, not really. More just pointing out that Kojimbo is a complete hack fraud, who shamelessly copies american media, and his games are shit too and haven't actually innovated anything. Meanwhile, Remedy keeps pushing the envelope both in terms of narrative and gameplay with every game they make, and even though people "hate" the innovations they bring in, in a couple of years some hack fraud amerimutt studio like Naughty dog is going to rip Remedy off again, and you'll be sucking them off with the rest of the midwit drones.

what? there isn't a single remedy game remotely as unique as Death Stranding from a gameplay perspective, I'd argue story too, since the gameplay is DIRECTLY tied to the story, and not just in an abstract way of "Woah man, change the environment a bit, or look at this case board and connect the dots woah". But literally, in every aspect and facet.

maybe quantum break tho, that's the only one I haven't played. who knows. I used to hate Kojima, but now I respect him for giving me death stranding and finally somewhat understand what everybody saw in MGS...except MGS games are still shit except maybe 3

You do realize they fricking invented third person shooters with Max Payne? Yes, there were the Tomb Raider games before Max and other primordial 3rd person games as well, but they were all very awkward to actually play, which is why the game everyone including Kojima imitated was Max Payne.

            >I'd argue story too

MDK and FAKK2 came out before Max Payne and were also popular at their time. MP nonchalantly capitalized on Matrix hype and John Woo flicks and that's what gave it that nudge that pushed a great game into classic status.

Like i said, there were other primordial 3rd person shooters but Max Payne was the gold standard one and was imitated so hard, terminally contrarian, revisionist zoomers/plebs like you call it generic and uninspired/have to pretend Remedy didn't blow literally everyone's mind with the John Woo slo-mo action hero gameplay, and with the gritty film noire story.

Like i said, there were other third person shooters before Max Payne like Tomb raider, Winback, etc etc. Remedy even cited those games as a direct source of inspiration for making Max Payne into a third person shooter. But, if you actually go back to play those games, they play nothing like modern third person shooters. You boot up Max Payne, and it plays exactly like a modern third person shooter, because Max Payne is the blueprint that every other third person shooter imitates. That's innovation, and that's influence.

For me, it's watching pseuds critique Alan Wake's writing, both the character's writing and the games writing. It's always some shit like
            >i wrote a play in middle school, i write video essays for my youtube channel, and my mommy said i was really smart, so i know a thing or two about writing. I can confidently say this is HORRIBLE writing. It's overly wordy, it's cliché, it's campy, it's predictable, it's full of tropes, it repeats itself, the dialogue is awkward and poorly written, i would expect better writing for a videogame franchise about a writer!

Woah, it's almost like Alan Wake the character is a parody of Stephen King and other airport hack novelists who enjoy immense popularity despite their lack of talent/technical mastery for writing. It's almost like Sam Lake is making fun of himself and his own writing, while also making a statement; You don't need to be a technically good writer to make something enjoyable to the actual consumer. You need to be entertaining, aka fun. It's also really funny watching all these supposed "geniuses" fall hook line and sinker for the most obvious and telegraphed red herring in Alan Wake 2, which is Scratch being Alan. Zane is the one calling Alan on the telephone, telling him what to write. When you meet him in room 665 Very subtle, Zane zips around the room like the film reel is SCRATCHED, wears the deer mask, and directs Alan's writing. When Alan goes to the movie theater, the "grandmaster" gloats about the fact he tricked Alan into assuming the role of the detective, and tells him he's living someone else's story with a very distinct Finnish accent that Zane also just so happens to have. Zane is so obviously the main villain of the franchise, i'm amazed anyone could miss it.

    I agree with this comment

"Solid Snake and Snake Plissken are equally awesome but I respect Kurt's decision not to get involved with MGS. Having him voice Solid Snake would make the character feel too derivative of Snake Plissken instead of being its own thing."

Honestly good. Snake is a hamfisted reference to Snake Plisken and this would have just kind have been a weird middle finger from him to John Carpenter. Pretty sure the two are buddies. Not to mention Kojima's Snake is probably more well-known and beloved. Having zero separation between the two would have been weird.

Kojima may be a hack, but he still adds his own funny flair to the MGS games.
Can't honestly say the same about Death Stranding - it tries to be serious and deep, but everything about it is too slow, cheesy and cringy, while at least MGS managed to stay both well-paced, emotional and serious even with the most ridiculous G.I Joe villains or half an hour cutscenes.
It might as well be true that the entire franchise was carried by the devs and Kojima himself didn't actually do much other than provide the material to steal from

That's because with MGS, Kojima had a bunch of tard wranglers working alongside him.

I also feel sorry for Dave Hayter to find out Kojima had been trying to screw him out of his role for that long. Everyone loved him in that role and it was just bad form and self-wank by Kojima to get Keifer Sutherland in MGS5.

No hate to Keifer. Kojima should be better to his people.

Honestly now that I think about it I could have it all wrong.

        >MGS1 happens
        >MGS2 Kojima tries to replace Snake with Raiden. Nobody in the west likes Raiden.
        >MGS3 Kojima has money and tries to replace Snake's voice actor for ancestor. Doesn't succeed.
        >MGS4 Kojima just makes Snake old and decrepit and more or less writes him off and puts a bow on his story.
        >MGS5 Kojima finally says frick it and replaces Hayter after trying to rid himself of him since MGS2

I suppose it is possible that Hayter never had a good relationship with Konami to begin with, but if it were a case of trying to write out a voice actor, that wouldn't explain Otsuka sticking around in Japan for the whole series.

He has had work, just no stand out roles. Most recently he is a bartender in the new LAD games.

Which, let that sink in. Sega picked Yong Yea over Hayter for the lead in the new LAD games.

Also he played King Shark on CW..

    > Let’s go create another iconic character
This guy doesn’t have a single iconic character, including Snake Pliskin, who wouldn’t even be known to anyone if it wasn’t for metal gear.
Basically he’s an actor who thought a video game would hurt his acting cred. But Kurt could never act anyway, people just like how he looked.

I'm the biggest Kojima mark on the planet, but Kurt Russel did the right thing. Approaching someone to cast them in a role that riffs of a role they played 20-something years ago in a couple of cult classic John Carpenter movies is an exercise in astoundingly bad taste

  36. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

Just putting it out there that Russell voiced the exact same character he played in The Thing for some shovelware.

So realistically he thought Kojima's games were narrative garbage (and they are) so he declined.

I dunno, I'm willing to take him at face value. Reprising his role from The Thing in a game that Carpenter undoubtedly signed off on is a lot different from playing Snake in something Carpenter had no involvement in.

Carpenter was involved in making The Thing game. And it is just another case of him falling off hard artistically past 90s, as much as I love his 80s film output.

I've always maintained that David Hayter is the worst part of MGS and that it's a no-brainer to replace him for MGSV. And Sutherland was more than fine, they just didn't give him any lines or couldn't afford it. When people cry for Hayter or defend him I don't understand what's happening other than nostalgia. He's acceptable for PS1 standards, but not any further than that.
