then why'd he put so much shooting in it
he said it himself
the shooting supports exploration
shooting is just something you do while you explore
It's a shooter in the sense that it has shooting in it, but if you described it to somebody who had no idea what the game was like by calling it a shooter they'd get a very inaccurate impression of the game.
Why does vee hate Resident Evil 4's remaster but love Metroid Prime's remaster?
Because the former unnecessarily changes shit for the worse, while the latter doesn't and it's just literally the same game with better graphics and some minor QoL improvements.
>RE4 is a remake that rebuilds the game from the ground up and makes a ton of unnecessary changes in an attempt to "modernise" the game
>Prime Remaster is the same game but with updated graphics, better control options, and some unlockable extras
ninchuddies will swallow any old slop
users of other consoles are more discerning
Effort Post Warning
Metroid Prime Remastered has taken the original game and improved it in (almost) every way.
Models, textures, levels, clarity throughout are all improved.
Changes to things like volumetric lighting are controversial
>Old beams would light up every surface within 5 metres of them, new beams only light up areas in their immediate proximity and highly reflective surfaces
But generally it's been received as an incredibly good faith remake.
The areas of the game are, fundamentally, the same - but every detail has been meticulously created to improve and update the graphics, without changing the feel of the original.
Some games "Smooth out" a lot of the old blocky edges, or cover every surface with over-designed and busy textures.
Instead, the remake looks the way the original looks like in your memories as a 13 year old.
In contrast, Resident Evil 4 is an "adaptive work" that makes massive changes to its source material - and not always for the better. Cut scenes are arguably worse, rain and other effects look poor for the current era and many of the animations and attacks from the original that gave it "oomph" and a satisfying feeling are gone.
While each of these are subjective, the objective fact is that the game is vastly different from the original. It's not a re-master, it's a remake.
All games exist to make money, but MP "Feels" like people who cared about the game are now selling a product they worked hard on.
While Capcom feels like they churned out a rehash for money.
I don't know how people expected otherwise from Crapcom after the massive dump that was REmake 3.
I think because RE4 is remake and not a remaster.
Yes. The main objective of the game is to explore, not to shoot at things. Hell, most of the enemies are random wild life, not actual enemies.
>The game is about shooting things
>Game literally can't be beat without shooting things
It's a shooter, 100%
>The game is about moving the camera in a direction
>Game literally can't be beat without moving the camera in a direction
It's a sidescroller, 100%
It also has jumping. Does that make it a 3D platformer too?
So using your logic SystemShock and Deus Ex is also a first person shooter?
>System Shock is not an FPS
What is it about System Shock that attracts so many posers that have never actually played it?
All true. It's a very deep game.
No, it's a Metroidvania.
It literally has lock on as a primary mechanic, the shooting is secondary to the main gameplay loop of 'acquire item, backtrack to location to use item to acquire new item.'
>vania.
It literally is a Metroid game. Castlevania didn't do shit for the sub-genre. Hell, it couldn't even jump to 3D in a competent manner, Metroid had to do that too.
No official port did that.
Almost every metroidvania is an SOTN-like. The ARPG elements are what people like about it.
Yet the popular ones, aka the current Metroid games and Hollow Knight, have no such a thing in them.
You don't even have to manually aim so yeah, the shooting isn't the focus.
What about the ports that removed lock-on?
They never removed the lock-on. You can still lock on in Trilogy, you're just allowed to aim around the screen with motion controls, but it's pointless in Prime and Echoes since the encounters are designed to that an enemy's vulnerable spots can always be directly locked on to without needing to adjust your aim. Corruption is the only game designed so that you sometimes have to lock on to an enemy's general body and then manually aim at weak spots around it.
Oh did they? See I always avoided the Wii trilogy because I heard it removed the lock on, and I thought that sounded retarded.
My mistake.
>first person
>you point your reticle at shit
>you shoot it
it's a shooter
just cause everyone jerks off your shitty studio for making tendie games doesn't mean you get to be pretentious about it
By that logic Contra and Super Metroid are the same genre as well.
no anon, no, they're platformers
The first Metroid is more of a platformer than Super ever will be.
You don't point your reticle at shit though. The game does that for you.
Is Knack a platformer even though it jumps for you?
yeah i know it's a baby game that plays for you but you still aim at shit
But you don't aim at shit though.
you still have to look at enemies to shoot them and you have to do things like strafing and positioning while you're shooting them
First person exploration/action/adventure hybrid that happens to use a gun as the means to progress.
Death of the author. People play it as a shooter.
No, they don't. You may start playing it as a shooter, but the moment you realize you're stuck and you have to explore and pay attention to the environment to move forward, you will start to avoid the enemies altogether and playing it like the Metroid it is.
>Game about shooting guns
>Game about collecting new guns to shoot
>Game about killing (with gunshots)
>You even have to shoot the doors to open them
It's a shooter.
Are the 2D metroids shooters?
No they're shmups, borderline bullet hells.
Yeah. And so is Megaman, Cave Story, Gunstar Heroes etc.
Is Terraria? You can beat the whole game without shooting anything but it does have guns.
>You can beat the whole game without shooting
If shooting is non-essential, probably not. I'd call it a sub-sub-sub genre if anything
it's a shootsplorer
Hes wrong. Metroid Prime is a FPS and always will be. By his logic Borderlands isn't a FPS because it has exploration in it
Borderland's genre is explicitly called a "Shoot and Loot".
But it has exploration in it so its not a FPS
But exploration isn't the focus of Borderlands. The shooting is. In the same way, the focus of Metroid Prime isn't the shooting, it's the exploration. It's why progression is locked behind finding the Chozo artifacts and not behind killing the bosses.
I'd, obviously, describe Metroid Prime as a Metroidvania; a game where the primary focus is on backtracking and acquiring skills to progress. It just so happens to be from a first person perspective.
In a run and gun sense, maybe. But again, the focus of a game like Full Metal Slug is not to gain new skills to access new areas in old zones. It's to shoot your way to the end of the level, which the 2d Metroids are blatantly not about.
How fucking contrarian do you have to start shit over something no one started shit over 20 years ago.
Fucking hell.
How is the a point of discussion?
It's a first person exploration game and the shooting aspect is the bare minimum required. The fact it is first person is just to get immersed in Samus's suit and make the cramped levels way less of a pain in the ass to navigate as they don't need to worry about a camera clipping through shit.
>Do you consider prime a shooter?
No.
>What are Ganker's thoughts on this
That it's all semantics.
It's not, the game plays fundamentally different than a FPS.
Where does "game in which you shoot in first person" end and "first person shooter" begin? There's no definitive answer, which is why this useless forum debate has been going on since 2002.
and that's conjecture
fite me bro
It has always been a first person adventure game with combat
How is that combat done? Is it shooting?
It is a First Person Shooter by definition. That's fine, its one of the best.
It's really more of a platformer considering the level design.
He's right tho
Shooting isn't the main focus, hell you do more exploration, platforming, and puzzle solving/ scanning than you do shooting
He is wrong, categorically. It is the death of the author anon.
I could make a book about bees but if people just use it to shit on it then its no different than any other indian shit tile. I can say it is a book about bees but when everyone uses it as the same thing what they use it as is what it really is. The author's intentions die with the author. He has created something for the sake of creation, his input in the matter is now done.
I need you to have better allegories when explaining your opinion
Or rather have no allegories at all because 90% of the time they detract from the viewpoint you wish to present to someone
Just some advice my friend
If you have to describe a game in one word, then Metroid Prime is not a shooter.
But you don't have to describe games in one word.
And metroid prime is
>An atmospheric, exploration focused puzzle/platformer first person shooter
I don't really consider it to be.
Video game genres are bad. Hilariously so.
He's not wrong, its a FPS but shooting is the weakest part of the game and used more as keys.
