Leaks

Friend is working on a new project for Gamefreak. He can't say much but the games seem to be Johto-themed 2D games in the sprite style of Octopath/Live Alive, but look worse apparently (filters look weird, less detailed sprites). Unsure if it's a direct remake or just set in the same region - likely to be direct remake but this is my conjecture and not confirmed by him. I know Silver and Prof Elm are in the game, starters are the same but get updated Sugimori-style artwork (he didn't draw it though). Not sure if they get new forms. Not sure if there's any new forms at all. Togekiss was seen in some concept art. Developed by ILCA.

I thought it worked well in 4. DPP's graphics hold up since it's still 2D with the 3D being hidden or used tastefully in moderation.
In 5 they actually moved the camera in the same graphic engine (with hax you can move it the same way in Shinou) and I thought the grahpics were was exciting. It really pushed the DS's limits. It was one step closer to a 3D walk-around-freely region.

WHY does it look ugly instead of you having a temper tantrum? Only time I think sprites look ugly are when they overdesign them to be too elaborate like in some specific indie games

          Anonymous

          >WHY does it look ugly
          The camera distorts the sprites.
The animations distort the sprites because they were done with lazy tweening rather than editing the frames by hand.
The animations themselves look unnatural and robotic because 99% of them are just the Pokemon nonsensically rotating all their limbs like a spastic moron.
The sprites aren't scaled consistently in battle so the back sprites look horribly pixelated 99% of the time.
Slapping sprites on 3D environment in general just looks incoherent compared to just using entirely sprites or entirely models.

              >aliasing bad lol
You realize every game afterwards has this as well? It’s how screens work when diagonal lines move through many pixels. I’ll admit it’s worse and more noticeable the lower resolution screen it is (DS), but that’s ALL I’ll admit.

                > Except those examples have nothing to do with tweening
Yes they do. The tail looks like shit because they lazily tweened it and an algorithm determined the placement of the pixels rather than animating the sprite by hand. It’s perfectly possible to animate Mew’s tail without it looking like shit.

                >rather than animating the sprite by hand
that wouldn't work with a sprite rendered in 3D space and a moving camera. I'd agree if it were completely stationary like Crystal's sprites.

                Anonymous

No it wouldn’t. Tails are still thin, so as the camera moves and the sprite shifts, the pixels in the tail would be distorted as they go in and out of being aligned or misaligned with the screen’s pixels. It had nothing to do with how the sprite’s animated.

                Anonymous

                >the pixels in the tail would be distorted as they go in
This only matters if the camera zooms. For translation it doesn't matter in the slightest.

                Anonymous

Not only are you asking for camera zoom to be eliminated, which would suck, but you’re ignoring the obvious fact that it would happen when the camera moves in literally any way. Sprite pixels only look good when they are aligned with the screen’s pixels, and any camera movement fricks that. The lower res the screen is, the more noticeable it will be. Your magical solutions are schizo copes and blind criticism that will never actually solve this.

                > which would suck
                Not really.

                > but you’re ignoring the obvious fact that it would happen when the camera moves in literally any way
If the camera moves x-1 and y-1 then the pixels on the pokemon can also just move x-1 and y-1. It has literally no effect of the position of the pixels relative to the Pokemon itself because everything gets translated equally. I’ve literally worked on games that have a nearly identical camera system to gen 5, it’s very obvious you’re making up bullshit just to pretend GF is good at their jobs.

                >if the camera moves x-1 and y-1
You’re already covering your ass in advance. If this was the only way it moved, we be restricted to perfectly vertical, horizontal, and diagonal camera movement. Also, the elephant in the room is that it moves SMOOTHLY, so there are in-betweenS. Otherwise, the camera would jolt everything over one pixel at a time, looking EXTREMELY choppy, which is the worst looking result this thread postulated yet.

Yes. What do you think “translation” means?

                > that it moves SMOOTHLY
1 pixel at a time, yes. There’s no such thing as 0.5 pixels. Literally every game ever physically has to work this way.
