    moronic article.
28GB is worse than 32GB not because those 4GB matter but because it implies smaller bus width and thus lower bandwidth. All nvidia cards now are bandwidth bottlenecked.

      Anonymous

In layman's terms, why can't bigger buses be used for less memory?

        Anonymous

Costs more, and nVidia intentionally gimping their consumer line to not make them attractive to businesses that'll just pick those up rather than their overpriced Quadro line-up

        Anonymous

Because there are only 1GB and 2GB memory chips being made commonly. So if they wanted to go for less memory or same with higher bus width they would need to increase the number of individual memory chips on the card and there's only so much space for adding chips. The 4090 uses 12 2GB memory chips and assuming this rumor is true the 5090 will use 14 2GB memory chips, switching those chips to 1GB and trying to reach the same memory capacity would quickly clutter the board and using Nvidia's doubled sided memory solution(like the used for the 4060 TI 16gb) would leave half the memory passively cooled by the backplate or not cooled at all. On the other hand using 1 GB chips and not double stacking them would make a 5090 with less vram than the 4080 and make the product bomb massively, but I guess some Nvidia cultists would still buy it.

Cyberpunk 77 with Raytracing requires a 4080 minimum for GOOD frames
Technically, a 5060ti should be able to run it comparatively okay

        Define good frames
Because with my 4090 and 7700x it hovers around 50fps at 1440p with everything maxed out
Compared to an awesome 144fps(locked) with everything maxed out but without gaytracing, same resolution

They are skimping the VRAM because AI is fake and they have nothing in the wings during this global economic crash. The 6090 will be the same as the 5090, but with 48GB VRAM.

  22. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Next gen won't be more than a model upgrade of the current gen. 5080 will perform like a 4080TI and fill the huge gap to the 4090 and the 5090 will perform like a 4090TI would have done. NVDA certainly could do better but they have no economical reason, no pressure from competition.

LOL remember when you called AI a fad in 2022? now you're coping over vram because nvidia is intentionally holding back consumer cards because their datacenter cards sell so well. If they gave consumers 40GB of VRAM for $4000, they wouldn't be able to sell A100 cards for $11000. You will NEVER have above 32GB of vram in a consumer card. soon regulations will come in anyway to prevent consumer cards from being powerful enough to run AI. it's over, you are nothing to them

Neural networks might be useful, but the current theoretical discoveries can only go so far. We are already at the limit of scaling for language models, transformers paper is 7 year old already ffs and the only thing we did is throw more processing power at the problem.
The limits has became apparent and it's only going to get worse because we started to feed LLM's their own poop after we run out of real text.

They stopped future proofing in the 10xx series because it made their future products look bad by comparison. It's what happens when your industry is so stagnant that the only competition is your previous line of products.

There's no such thing as future proof until it becomes impossible to improve silicon-based transistors. Then if anything wants to improve, it will have to be on a new format of technology that will have to be developed until it catches up to where silicon transistors stopped improving or else it will be a worse option.

The worst part is that even AMD can get away with their shit because Intel is basically a non-starter in terms of desktop GPUs. Intel's top of the line Arc GPU is probably about on par with a 4060/RX 6700XT, and that doesn't have VR support yet either.
The only thing that gives hope is that XeSS is a much better upscaler than the dogwater that is FSR 2.0, but who knows if Intel will keep on or if they'll one day jump ship.
