          >a mainstream portable media player that’s more than a screen with WiFi
That's called a smartphone, which is the reason all mp3 players, even the iPod, died off.
Why have a separate device just for music?

            >if you've got the coin

the fact you need 'money' just to listen to music on a DEDICATED mp3 player now says that this shit is by design. they absolutely do not want people having control over their music anymore. your smartphone scans and reads all the shit you have on your device, music included, and they want to lock out the privilege of getting away from it.

                they are not allowed.

Strange how? Obvious the big companies don't want to make a product where you own your shit in an industry that's being pushed harder than any other industry to go entirely subscription based. The music industry has always been a disgusting, garbage, corrupt shithole at the forefront of technological regressionism. So it's 'strange' in a cosmic sense I suppose, but not strange compared to the status quo of the past 50 years. I guess I'd call it strange if a smaller company isn't making anything since I've had mp3 players in the past that are basically just a flash drive, audio jack, and lcd screen, but I haven't looked in a long time.

I don't know, I've been using my phone as a media player for the past 10 years and never had any problems. I'm listening to music on it right now. All locally stored, works offline, synced via iTunes, just like an iPod. It's really no different.
Most people like the convenience of streaming, they don't need to prevent people from having local music in order to get them to switch. If a phone didn't let me have local music, I wouldn't buy it.

you can purchase all the retro shit you want to get away from this, yet, you don't find it strange that nearly all the bigdogs in the music scene (like SONY) wont go back to making dedicated mp3 players in the current year, that don't have bluetooth, radio, nfc or internet build into them?

              they are not allowed.

They're doing that because people want to use streaming services and Bluetooth speakers/headphones. Not including that in a $1000+ music player these days would be suicidal. It'd never sell enough to make up the cost and sales are already extremely low because most people are fine with smartphones.

                >synced via iTunes, just like an iPod
dumbass. iTunes has a tonne of shady telemetry going on behind the scenes within its software.
if you were doing it the 'right' way you'd be relying on the File Explorer system to organise your music instead of relying on Apple software (who we all know by now are causing a lot of problems technologically and economically).

                >people want to use streaming services and Bluetooth speakers/headphones

only because they're forced to. there's a whole niche of people out there that want to plug out from this nonsense and the lack of consumer access to this equipment prevents them from doing it.
the only people that are allowed to plug out are the people who have the money.

the ordinary consumer is forbidden from having independence in the current era of technology, and it is 100% by design. if you think your safe listening to your music privately on your smartphone, you're being lied to.

iTunes is the only way to add music to iPods/iPhones since like the 3rd gen iPod. It's how it's been since iTunes was introduced.
Only the really early ones allowed drag and drop and then they only worked over Firewire with a Mac.
I don't give a frick if the government knows what music is on my phone. Location and microphone data is way more sketchy and yet I don't care enough to not have a phone, a requirement for living in the civilized world and holding a job.

It always seemed to me as if Phil gives devs too much leeway. He lets them work for as long as they want, burn as much as they want, and whatever they have in the end, gets released. Just look at 343i, after H4, H5 at the latest, they should've been canned. Instead they went on to burn millions and half a decade on a new engine only to toss it away after one game and are somehow still in charge of Halo.
Sometimes you do need a bad man who reins dev teams in and forces them to work a turd until it shines.

It's either this, or once they get into the Microsoft ecosystem Microsoft's internal procedures choke production. Either way, something is very obviously rotton behind the scenes, because they've had a damn near perfect record of publishing pure unadulterated garbage.

Here's the real story. Halo Infinite was in development so long partly because Microsoft would fire contractors to prevent them from becoming legal employees. Contractors aren't full time employees if you're a third world English as a second language speaker. Microsoft HAAAAAAATES the idea of having more employees. So the issue with contractors being fired and renewed later is it halts game development since at a large scale no one knows what the other guys were doing with the game code and they're not employees anymore.

Halo Infinite's rumored 500 million budget and long dev cycle is all part of Microsofts corporate credo of pilling contractors over cultivating long term employees like Nintendo and Sony. Replace Phil Spencer and they'll still use contractors with the next Halo game. You gotta clean the whole executive suite to change Xbox's dead brand.

“We’re not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo. There isn’t really a great solution or win for us. I know that will upset a ton of people, but it’s just the truth of the matter. When you’re third place in the console marketplace and the top two players are as strong as they are...

But we’re not in a position - and I see out there, I see commentary, that if you just build great games everything would turn around. It’s just not true that if we go off and build great games, all of the sudden you’re going to see console shares shift in some dramatic way. I see a lot of pundits out there that kinda want to go back to the time when we all had cartridges and discs and every new generation was a clean slate and you could switch the whole share.

That’s just not the world that we are in today. There’s no world where Starfield is an 11/10 and people start selling their PS5s. That’s not gonna happen.”

I haven't been a Snoy since the PS3 but I'm tired of the Helldivers thing being compared to this. Signing into another account just like countless Steam games make me do anyway opposed to never getting Prey 2 and CoD and BGS games being lower quality than ever.
I haven't glanced at a Microshit game since 2020 when DOOM Eternal and Ori 2 came out. Good games, we'll never see anything like them again from this company.
