If you can tolerate lactose - drink milk. It will hydrate you, replace your sugars and electrolytes.

        Vax status?

Have a beer, but don't get drunk again. Hangovers are caused by dehydration but also alcohol withdrawal. Just keep yourself mildly tipsy until you're feeling better.

Drink anything rich in minerals since you piss then away after drinking, idk just buy some multi vitamins plus minerals and make yourself a fizzy vitamin drink.

I'll actually give you this one. It was a neat idea that I was excited to see introduced and then it just fell flat. Personally Elden Ring just solidified what I felt about DS2+3, which is that the formula is stale and I enjoy other games more. Still a good game tho.

I love when you can tailor armor appearance to your liking, there’s no downside. I’ll legit wear a helmet or chest with inferior stats just because I like the look.

I'd just prefer for armour to have some statisitical consistency. A cloth dress should never have the same protective capabilities of a suit of armour.

The better VA always get the role. The only time I seen this was Ramlethal VA where the previous white actor step down just to let a black woman do the role. The black woman was a better VA for the character anyway

      Anonymous

Same, first playthrough was probably the most fun and mysterious out of any souls game but I haven't done a 2nd playthrough yet. I hate that the size of the open world necessitates a mount, not really a fan of mounts in general and I liked that ds1-3/bb/sekiro areas were compact in size enough that it felt reasonable travelling everywhere on foot. Definitely gonna do a 2nd and maybe a 3rd playthrough when the DLC releases though.

        Anonymous

Also I am giving the modding scene time to start pumping out high quality stuff. Pretty cool things that you couldn't do as easily in the last games.

      Anonymous

Are you doing your subsequent runs with different builds? I find this is the only way to keep Souls games fun for multiple playthroughs unless you are replaying it after 2-3 years. NG and beyond seem kind of dumb because of the hp sponge enemies

        Anonymous

Of course I did, builds are the whole reason to do replays.

        >NG and beyond seem kind of dumb because of the hp sponge enemies
The frick am I reading? They get a large bump in the first few areas on NG+1 and a small bump towards the middle-endgame. From there, all subsequent NG+'s adds a small health bump across the board, because the content has already been leveled out on the initial NG+ run. The biggest change is that enemies hit much harder.

I hated it, I got to just after the big city before finally dropping it.
It's just 1/10th of a Dark Souls game's levels stretched out between huge areas of nothingness with random generation tier mines and dungeons sprinkled in.
I didn't like any of the new mechanics like Ashes of War, I didn't like the art direction, I didn't like the armor sets and how few of them were relative to how big the game is, and I didn't like any of the bosses.
I've played every single game in the "franchise" besides Demon's Souls, and Elden Ring is by far the worst.

Which ones of these apply to DS2?

        >It's just 1/10th of a Dark Souls game's levels stretched out between huge areas of nothingness with random generation tier mines and dungeons sprinkled in.

DS2 doesn't have any side dungeons or anything like that, and all the main areas are connected directly to each other, unlike ER.

        >I didn't like any of the new mechanics like Ashes of War

DS2 doesn't have them, and it introduced some cool stuff like power stancing

        >I didn't like the art direction

DS2 had some crappy looking textures and areas, but the overall aesthetic and style of the game looked nice.

        >I didn't like the armor sets and how few of them were relative to how big the game is

The armour in DS2 is pretty widely regarded to be some of the best in the franchise, and most people who don't even like the game agree that the fashion in it is great

        >and I didn't like any of the bosses.

It didn't have the best bosses in the series, but none of them were obnoxious or frustrating. They were either decent, or too easy.

Ultimately it was underwhelming for me, but then I'd played all the other games so much that it was sort of a given. I'm not one of those autists with 5000 hours in a game who then starts wondering WHAT IF THIS GAME WAS BAD ALL ALONG? There is such thing as burning out on a genre. I do intend to give it second playthrough in 2024 to give it another chance after clearing up my backlog. The game played too safe with the Big Dark Souls route, it needed to frick about more but unfortunately the people who've memed the dificulty and Zanzibart for over a decade just wanted more of the same to post fail compilations on social media and get e-clout from hour long lore videos. Stormveil and Volcano Manor were pretty good at least, the underground bits were mediocre and I don't understand why people were so amazed by it. Would've been better if they threw in stuff like actual puzzles and towns with NPCs, or allowed multiple Ashes of War on a single weapon for shits and giggles, anything that would shake the formula up. Also not enough frickable monster girls, nothing like the Fair Lady, Ornifex, Amelia, or the Boreal Dancer.

It's literally the only Fromsoftware game with good combat and enemies that aren't moronic and with 3 moves in total, so it feels like the whole Soulsborne series built up to this. I learned to like and even love certain overworld boss fights with Torrent. It's also the first game since Dark Souls where they were clearly giving a shit about level design all the way through the game so no, I got what I wanted from it, innocation and refinement over the template. I would say the series would have felt incomplete without a proper budget wrap up bringing some decent good ideas. Now I'm ready for Armored Core (trilogy?) reworked with some of the mechanics of Elden Ring and whatever extra content, level design and mechanic the Elden Ring expansions will bring.

Armored Core VI will use some Elden Ring mechanics as stated by the interview in terms of how each weapon affects the newly reworked stagger bar so you can keep pressuring an enemy and make it rise, while staying away and passive will make it lower and let the enemy recover. There's also a bigger focus to close and personal action and melee elements alongside ranged options, which is why for the ranged at which mechs fight there's also a combined offensive boost move

You can get to the first proper dungeon literally minutes after exiting the tutorial level if you want and nothing stops you unless you suck at Margit.

                >the same Hollows

Limgrave, Stormveil, and honestly most of the other overworld areas are mostly populated by the same progression of beef jerky hollow -> hollow with shit sword -> hollow with decent gear -> slightly bigger elite hollow knight that's in every other souls type game. Except ER being an open world game stretches that intro sequence so much further.

I'm sorry for expecting the new flagship title with all these hyped up new features and changes to offer more than the same, irrelevant hollows as the past four games. Outside of a couple individual encounters, the game didn't get challenging or interesting until somewhere around mid-Liurnia.

Alright, I know this is just sophistry, but surely you're not arguing that several hours of generic hollows qualify as actually engaging gameplay, right? For what the game is supposed to be and built up as, it's barely clicker game tier interactivity. Which sure, on a technical level it meets the qualifications of gameplay, but while you'll never admit to it on your favorite anonymous image board, surely you know in your heart of hearts that it's fricking dull.

I felt it was boring. The lack of a story made it very difficult to continue playing. The bosses weren't particularly inventive either. I did like the build variety though. But I found it boiled down to about 3. Weapon and Magic, Bleed and Shield. There are variations but after playing through a bunch of different builds they all fell into those three basically. I also thought the graphics were horrible. Everyone told me it's the best looking game they've seen but it felt very bland and boring aesthetically to me.

In the other souls games you visit tightly designed places while in elden ring everything feels "loose". Its because of the open world gimmick. The game needs more "tight" places. 80% of the time you run around some non places and most of the POI you find are just copy paste caves, etc. It needs more real dungeons.
And it needs more light armor. Frick this game for 90% of all clothes either being heavy armor style or robes. And of the few light armors, half is rubbish.

Since I'm a homosexual who actually explores as much as I can before proceeding with bosses, I just got completely burnt out just before Maliketh. I knew it was a point of no return, but not to what extent, and cleaning up the entire game on top of how ridiculously poorly designed the post-Mountaintops difficultyspike is, I just could not be fricked to finish it. No; being oneshot off of an animation cancel input read, despite being over-hardcap Vit, with decent armor and no ability to poise it is not fun game design. It's artificial challenge. If you expect me to summon, you're in essence telling me that the boss isn't supposed to be attacking me, for me to kill it.
Waiting on the DLC honestly, maybe it'll help alleviate the spike somewhat with whatever not!P2W talismans they add to the game, like how DS3 almost with with the early rings you could grab in Ariandel / Ash Heap (which shouldn't have been there). Great game otherwise before then, but the Mountain difficultyspike was just such a spit in the face. It's not even the kind where you have to deal with more difficult enemies; it's just damagesponges and deliberately unfair encounters designed for cheap kills. They learnt absolutely nothing from Dark Souls 3 trying to rip off Bloodborne, and instead made even worse design decisions from what they ''learnt'' from Sekiro.

For all intents and purposes, the game should have ended with Morgott. Let the rest be DLC for all I give a frick.

The actually designed by hand parts of the game are somewhere between good and excellent, but it's clear to me that the open world gimmick did not fricking work at all. At least not without broader changes to the Souls formula that I don't see From implementing any time soon, if their dedication to repetition and constant callbacks to themselves is any indication.
Between boring-ass copy pasted dungeons filled with the same enemies and 80% chance of one piece of useless loot at the end, endless enemy and boss reuse, a weirdly linear open world rife with impassable cliffs preventing truly open exploration, and overworld enemies being generally piss easy and not worth bothering with, everything between the good areas was a drag after the initial wow-factor of the intro vista wore off.
Scaling is completely out of whack, and absolutely falls apart in the latter quarter to a third of the game. The areas post-Leyndell feel like the game pressed the reset button on your character, as you pretty quickly go from being powerful and able take a hit all the way back to getting quickly burst down by trash, after you're likely to have hit most of your relevant softcaps, upgraded your weapons to +8 or +9, and there's not exactly massive amounts of growth left. It creates an odd progression/difficulty curve.

The story presentation might be the worst they've done. The main plot is impossible to decipher for most of the way through, and even then it's barely relevant. NPC quests are unfinished, disjointed, and hard to follow as there's sometimes dozens of hours between meeting an NPC and stumbling by sheer luck across them in the overworld, which is another point where the Souls formula doesn't work with the open world. There's also a lot of aping of past games and good moments, but with no restraint, which makes them fall flat. The game throws what are supposed to be big reveals at you, but without the context that makes them matter, which is just kind of weird.

Is this what bloodborne homosexuals actually believe?
The only reason we are still talking about the game is because of the setting, the mechanics are shallow, and what you cite as a positive in that you can only be aggressive just illustrates how little build variety there is. The weapons are interesting, but there is no playstyle variance between them. You are the autist for thinking there is a difference between rolling and dashing beyond visuals. Game is mid beyond the setting, all the other souls games aside from DS2 are superior.

Bloodborne felt so good to play because it trimmed the fat. It knew exactly what it was, and every single aspect of the game was laser focused on the same thing. It was more limited where different builds are concerned than other Fromsoft games, but I think that actually worked in the game's favor. It's not like Souls games, where they still haven't figured out how to balance rolling, parrying, armor, blocking, and poise in a way that makes all elements feel viable without being massively overshadowed by another, which is why these mechanics vary so wildly in usefulness and function across the games.
Meanwhile Bloodborne gives everyone the same dodge and nothing else, and so the game can build around that consistency to craft encounters specifically to work around and challenge the same set of tools.

Elden Ring has the best combat From has done. Ashes of War, Guard Counters and Jumping are the best innovations From did, and they finally gave purpose to all the various light/strong attacks, both from idle and even with movement or ashes of war.
Storytelling is subjective, I liked both Bloodborne and Elden Ring's more vast and expansive lore/world. Bloodborne has the best story twists and Elden Ring has the best cast of actual bosses as characters andmore varied and better art directions

I get that Sekiro was its own thing and a different beast, gameplay-wise, and why they wouldn't make its systems the new staple for the series, but even Bloodborne was leaps ahead with its combat system, while having the same DNA, so there's really no excuse.

Wrong, he said they specifically kept the Elden Ring/Souls identity intact instead of changing it with mechanics unfit, and the only converging point is how the stance/posture systems both deplete overtime instead of ibstantly as Bloodborne/Souls (Armored Core) limb break/Stagger used to work

No I'm not joking at all. What are your combat options at any given time in Bloodborne? Can you use jump attacks or low profile ashes to both avoid sweeping attacks and attack yourself? Can you equip heavy armor and/or use hyperarmored attacks or attacks that add very high damage/stagger resistance? Can you powerstance? Can you mix equipment for each hand? Can you guard effectively with either weapons or shields and counter those strike you think they'll follow up with an attack either light or delayed enough? What about variety of magic and ashes of war/ammo that make ranged options consistently good?

That's irrelevant, Bloodborne is still dodgespam 1 solution/gameplay style game, unlike Elden Ring far more varied and solid combat system. The extra bit of depth to dashspam Bloodborne has is charging attacks, the single best innovation From has done with Bloodborne (for which normalhomosexuals like you can't possibly understand the implications so of course it's overlooked) allowing good players to reap benefits from nailing the exact timings of enemy behaviour, but Elden Ring also did this better by balancing certain movesets so that you can dodge sweeping fast attacks during charging and are vulnerable to more delayed attacks with usually non vertical sweeps

All of those 'combat options' are inferior to roll except in incredible niche situations that are both rare and completely uncommunicated by the game and will only be known by a player who looked up a guide or has fought the boss before. Suggesting that there is variation in ER's combat system when there are MASSIVELY overpowered options that completely eclipse all others in 99.9999% of situations is a cope. For every attack you jump over (where a roll would have also worked) there are 1000 attacks you just roll, as usual.

I loved it at first but then the last parts came in and i was disappointed, its been 10 games that are the exact same and they still cant get the later areas right, fighting fizz shrimps and normal soldiers in a super secret area is the least hype thing they could make, and the recyled asylum demons too.

  65. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

i'd rate it higher than DS3 but lower than DS1 and BB; i had finished NG+ to do no ashes on remembrance bosses and both NG and NG+ was moderately fun but banalised souls-like, even more than DS3 did to DS1; i might do magic run (did STR->QTY) or even faith as comfort food now (just playing it sparingly and see where it goes).
it didn't live up the hype because most fromdroolers expect new DeS/DSand miyazaki won't bring old level design for that to happen

Pirated it and dropped it after wandering around in the open world for like 20 minutes that was just random enemys standing around empty fields littered with useless shit used for a crafting system. I remember thinking the new controls were ass but its been to long to remember the details.
Hate open worlds, they have absolutely zero benefit. The only souls game I dropped and I've finished the others each multiple times.

I enjoyed it at first but at some point I felt like it definitely overstayed it's welcome and I just pushed through because I wanted it to end. Exploration honestly started to suck once you got your 843th arteria leaf disguised as a rare item. Dungeons and hero graves all looked the same, bosses got reused, npc questlines always ended in the same boring "npc is now either dead or otherwise not around anymore". It's the epitome of being as wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle.

yeah i get what you meant, but the arteria leaf is one of the most useful resources in the game and also one of the rarest because it doesn't respawn, the mushroom would have been a better choice lol

      >npc is now either dead or otherwise not around anymore
This is the only thing that really pissed me off, and I'm convinced that it's Miyazaki's fetish or something after how Sellen's quest ended. The perfect ending would have been her just remaining head of the academy, with Rennala tucked away in the corner so you could respec. It made sense, was a satisfying payoff, maybe even have a throwaway line or two in an ending noting it. Instead, Miyazaki's suffering boner had to win out again.

Of course. No. Third person shooters will never be as good as Doom. Doesn’t mean it isn’t better than 99% of games out past and present and future. Most games will be owned by this game for a long time. But doom will always be better, as we do not play elden ring or Dark Souls 3 on PC for the shooting or the map making, but for the melee and the exploration with a little bit of depth added to it.
Minecraft: block building survival crafting experiment by an indie that was extremely successful on Java programming. For over thousands of hours played, the game is still being played even now, and it is still on Java edition with PC dedicated servers over LAN/private internet with all the PC features such as entering developer commands, mods, texture packs (self custom edited too), and Amplified biomes.
Doom: killing demons as big man shooter with map making and mod making, a real PC game with mouse and keyboard
Quake: same thing different theme but everything with 3D models and 3D maps with rooms above and below rooms, mods and map making tools
Rage: same thing but has open world and megatextures
Dark Souls 3: third person melee medieval fighter with levels meant to be obstacle course with different ways to tempt the knight in between boss fog doors; no map making; game has ability to hack you in the game as well as toxic community which needs to die for trying to prevent it from being for mouse and keyboard controls.
Elden Ring: same thing but with open world. Mods do exist but it just isn’t about the map and mod community because the stuff and the community they make is not worth it (Seamless Coop Mod remains the king omg how did that happen? A single conservative mod that simply gives local networking capabilities for playing how people want it to be played is why).

Of course I enjoyed Elden Ring, but I also feel that open world was not necessarily the right step forward. From Software excels at making dungeons and intricate setpieces. The movement is a bit too clunky for open world to feel right (in comparison with for example zelda) and elden ring's combat is not quite in depth enough to carry an open world game on its back.

      Anonymous

      >The movement is a bit too clunky for open world to feel right (in comparison with for example zelda

Funny you say that because I've just gotten filtered by TotK because traversal is so fricking unbearably slow compared to just zipping around on Torrent who also happens to have the "direct" type of mount controls like OoT Epona, rather than "indirect" controls like SotC, BotW, TotK.

I was more thinking about things like climbing mountains and such which feels way more natural in zelda than in elden ring.

It just stopped being fun when I realized every boss was going to be a two to three phase slog that required memorizing their move set full of delayed attacks. At that point I decided to over level and steamroll everything. Top tier bosses in this series are Demon Prince, Gael, and Friede. Elden ring bosses just felt like from soft introducing artificial difficulty because they know the formula is stale and easy

      Anonymous

They’re not necessarily hard but they’re full of artificial difficulty. The moment I saw Margit holding his backswing for legitimately 2-3 seconds I knew this game was a joke. Totally unrealistic and blatant artificial difficulty

did you really brute force elden ring bosses because you couldn't memorize attack patterns

        Anonymous

        >because you couldn’t memorize attack patterns
You never had to do this in previous games, though; that’s the point I’m making. I first timed many of DS1-3 bosses, including Gael, because you could reasonably react to their attacks the first time you saw them because they were generally realistic and well-choreographed. It felt like actual combat. In elden ring every boss has delayed attacks and moronic anime moves that will for sure kill you the first time you see them. The way to best bosses is, like you said, dying until you memorize their specific move set and delays. It’s garbage design

          >In elden ring every boss has delayed attacks and moronic anime moves that will for sure kill you the first time you see them

          >The way to best bosses is, like you said, dying until you memorize their specific move set
I beat almost all the bosses first try, what kind of moronic build were you running?

          Anonymous

You first timed those bosses because they were piss easy, imagine using Gael as an argument when you fight him in a massive empty area where spacing is never and issue and he has literally nothing that can ever hit you despite his teleport and projectile spam being worse than the average ER boss

          Anonymous

The problem with ER is the input delay. If you try reactively dodging you will probably get hit during buffering whereas in ds3/bb this happens considerably less often. Getting trapped in animation recovery is a big thing too, in a way it makes combat easier because all you’re doing is queuing inputs

He absolutely still does. I've watched a few of his ER videos out of curiosity and most of what he says is either provably wrong or directly lifted from ER lore threads many of which I've personally participated in. His Malenia video included the theory about Malenia being in Caelid to save Miquella because Miquella's egg is directly below the Heart of Aeonia on the map and I'm pretty sure I was the actual first person to suggest that like six months ago

NTA but I don't really care about whether people think I'm smart. For souls games, I think it's the right storytelling approach. Not for all games, but I appreciate that the story never intrudes on the gameplay or makes you sit through extended cutscenes. It's there if you want to engage with it, but you can also ignore it if you want to.

Brainfried zoomers think if a game's story isn't told to you through 45 minute long expository cutscenes and walk and talks then it doesn't have a story

                Anonymous

I mean I think it's fair to prefer more traditional storytelling methods. But it's kinda dumb to pretend that Elden Ring doesn't have a story. It clearly does, the narrative is just structured uniquely to compliment the mechanics of the game.

                Anonymous

Traditional storytelling is fine, Ghost of Tsushima has like the most straightforward "standard" structure story I've seen in a video game in years and it was still enjoyable because it was told well. But Souls games have always excelled at less direct, more environmental storytelling which is something video games can do more effectively than any other medium. Some of them have stumbled with it, like DS2's story is kind of all over the place and retcons a lot of shit from the first game and DS3's story is pure nonsense, but DeS, DaS1, BB, and ER all have pretty clear, focused stories that aren't particularly cryptic or hard to understand so long as you pay attention and remember how everything works. DaS1 in particular has probably the least obtuse story of any of them, it's just told in an unconventional way that a lot of people didn't really know how to follow at first

                Anonymous

I think people confuse storytelling with worldbuilding/lore/etc. Every From game pretty much tells you in the first 10 minutes what you're doing and every boss pretty logically follows from there with very few shakeups.
The only time I feel like anyone would be actually confused by something directly in the narrative is probably something like Genichiro reviving Isshin (which was loved anyway) or the player getting sent to Farum Azula. Also probably the entirety of Bloodborne but that also is regarded to have the strongest worldbuilding of any From game anyway

                Anonymous

The games are meant to be 99% complete stories with a few missing holes, just like Miyazaki's youth experience reading western fantasy novels he couldn't fully translate due to his incomplete English. He's directly stated in interviews that that was his aim and he wanted to recreate that feeling for the player because it got his imagination working when he was young, and that little bit of ambiguity generates lots of discussion and debate over certain specifics of the story which has always been one of the most enjoyable things about the games. That said, what is there is really straightforward, there isn't really much to be confused about in Dark Souls 1 aside from a handful of deliberately obfuscated things like Kaathe and Frampt's true motivations. Everything else has a perfectly understandable sequence of events and logic to it

The mystery and scope of the open world does genuinely make a magical feeling when you don't know what you're going to find in any given nook or cranny, I don't think any other game has enticed me to explore so effectively, not simply to look for gear but just to see enemies and locales and explore landmarks and whatnkt

The problem is that From has basically fallen for their own memes and it is actively designed to be 'difficult' at the cost of the actual game design. The bosses are designed so that memorization is the only effective strategy with animations made deliberately misleading and damage incredibly high with the purpose of making a fundamentals/reaction based play style where you feel things out completely miserable and non viable. What I suspect happened is that they realized that a lot of the fanbase had more or less mastered the gameplay and so had to make a game that wouldn't be boring to them, but the issue is that the combat is really shallow and there's no way to really make 'time your roll iframes' difficult without making it artificially difficult to tell when you actually should be rolling. Then, on top of that, they just amped up the damage and made armor pointless so you get one/two shotted, again making it '''''harder''''' at the cost of the game design.

Then there is obviously that the storytelling is terrible and poorly explained, the characters are (again) just retreads of the same archetypes/stories we have seen over and over (I just assume the entire cast will die/go insane now).

The balancing is also far, far worse than usual and it's one of the few games I've ever played where you have to actively handicap yourself in a casual, blind playthrough to not make the game have zero challenge and be completely boring. Ashes and weapon arts are completely ridiculous and it's no coincidence all the people sucking off the game's amazing combat somehow seemed to be using moonveil/bleed builds on release. There's no excuse for such terrible balancing even in a single player game, I shouldn't have to actively ignore most of the game's mechanics in order to not have the combat/encounter design fall apart.

It's a bad game and I mean that honestly. It tries to wow you with superficial stuff but when you dig into it, it's undeniably badly designed.

Anyone who liked dark souls and didn't like elden ring is a mentally ill troony who lets their opinions be swayed by social media.

Elden Ring is literally just an improvement on dark souls in every possible way, while retaining the core loop of exploration, level design, levelling up and boss fights.

It's as simple as that. If you didn't like elden ring, you're a transexual freak.

      Anonymous

      Is it really?

        Anonymous

        It is.

Combat is improved with the inclusion of the jump mechanic, bosses require more skill to master than ever. Weapon art swap make every weapon customizable, and the boss difficulty and design means you're incentivized to actually use them.

The open world gives the player more freedom to choose where they want to go next, and the massive amount of side content is great for grinding if you find yourself in a tough spot. Compare that to dark souls where if you wanted to grind, you'd have to just clear the same level over and over, now you can head to different areas to get souls, upgrade materials, etc to help you beat a tough boss.

The bosses are also the most difficult to master, meaning they're the most consistently difficult on repeat playthroughs.

Level design itself is incredible, these levels are huge and interconnected with lots of secrets and multiple intersecting layers.

It's literally the apex of From's game design, and I'm tired of pretending it isn't.

          >the boss difficulty and design means you're incentivized to actually use them.
lol, nice way to saying 'most bosses can be beaten without engaging with them at all by spamming them'. 'incentivized' is an understatement. I am also heavily 'incentivized' to just get an ash to fight the boss for me, which I am sure you also will laud as genius game design.

            Anonymous

I'm sorry to say but the game is literally just too hard for you. If you go look up the top level players, there are an absolute shitton of positional and timing based openings in every single boss.

You're literally just playing the game at a skill level below what's required to master the bosses, and so you have to resort to crutches to win.

            Anonymous

if you think spirit ashes contribute that much then you have never actually beaten the game let alone play it enough to be able to say you actually know the ins and outs of the game like maybe up to an NG+5 where wasting your time to summon can actually get you oneshot by certain bosses, scratch that, they are already useless even at NG+2

lol this. then they whine about bosses being impossible to beat because of muh anime moves or muh delayed attacks because they want to just be able to reaction parry everything, which is ironic considering they also say spirit ashes and L2 spam etc are making ERgays ignore 90% of its in-game mechanics.

when people say these what they actually mean is they want to ignore 90% of ER's unique mechanics and just use something they totally abused in previous souls games. in a roundabout way they're actually admitting that it isn't exactly DS4 but they also refuse to adapt. it's telling that dozens of literal whos uploaded no hit runs and/or RL1 malenia kills to youtube way before ongbal even started doing ER vids.

Enjoyed it immensely more my second playthrough. That's not to say I didn't enjoy my first go through, but I was objectively playing it wrong. Played an almost pure faith/dex build with medium rolls and low poise and low vigor running Winged Scythe and spamming L2. Even when something resisted holy damage I used holy weapons until it crumpled under the sheer weight of my tenacity. I barely ever dodged, didn't parry, never really used any buffs or items other than flasks. My second playthrough I endeavored to only use the spiked caestus weapon. I gave it quickstep and used blood flame. This forced me to learn boss patterns and timings and allowed me to play aggressively in a way no other game really has. You have not experienced pleasure until you've quick stepped through Waterfowl Dance and jump punched Malenia to the fricking dirt or pulled her out of the air with bleed moments before she pulls it off. Fist weapons are just so fricking fun.

Yeah, in the beginning when everything was new it was great. But then the open world started to repeat itself, the rewards for going out your way was another Artoria leaf and the AI is still super cheesable or you can just run past without consequence.

Defeating the first ulcerated Tree Spirit hitless as I wore no armor with the Dancer ring, seeing the Lakes for the first time, being teleported to the Crystal caves, feeling like a tiny insect climbing the Precipies, traversing the sea of Rot, looking down to the Malenia arena, the amazing, winding journey from Erd-Tree gazing hill to Volcano manor was all great. But the impenetrable story, another dungeon with imps hiding behind the corner, another reused boss, another OP spell or just mimic tear trivialized everything because the AI is still from 2011 and get severly confused when there is more than one target. It definitly felt stretched out and all out of ideas before the capital

I think it has some serious flaws.

-Caves and catacombs, not needed. Should have dropped them and instead made more unique places. Even worse because you have to go into the catacombs to get items for your build.

-Map too empty and large. Too many sections of the game, especially earlier ones have large areas with nothing in it.

-Nonsense quest design. The quest design goes against exploration and makes zero sense. You are supposed to somhow find and keep track of vague statement after vague statement, and everything breaks if you explore the wrong area.

ER isn't just a good game it is a great game, it has some minor flaws with pacing, mostly to do with Torrent and the size of the world, but considering this is From's first attempt at such an open game it is truly amazing work. I stopped around the capital.
Felt like the game was just trying to punish me for enjoying ds1-3 and trying to play similar to those.
Some people might love those unending, non staggerable, 20-hit-semi-random combos that 1hko you even if only 1/3 of the combo hits you and sometimes also track 180. I don't.

Only enemies I legit enjoyed fighting are the crucible knights and the naturalborn of the void at the top of my head. Most enemies are either pushovers or there to ruin your fun by explicitly being designed to be "resistant" to most strategies you had learned from prior games.

I'm not even saying most of the enemies I hate are "hard". Just unfun to fight. I found out how to precisly facefrick the treespirits grab attack after the third time and it was a cakewalk after that. But fighting most bosses/midgame enemies felt like I had to rely almost exclusivly on cheese or abuse op weapons and summons.

Yeah but the other ones are a lot easier to see what's going on. The giant trolls and the golems all have clearly telegraphed attacks and are also pretty easy to knock down/stagger with charged attacks. The bears sort of just fly all over the place which is what causes problems.

Elden Ring is cool but I didn't finish it. I will come back and finish it eventually but it felt like quantity over quality. If you fight bosses underleveled and unupgraded you can tell they put a lot of work into making them challenging and interesting, but actual combat in Souls was never the main draw of the games for me so them pushing that aspect of the game style that hard is cool but not necessarily something I really care about. It's neat to see that evolution of the Souls combat style in enemies but not enough to make me finish the game on a first playthrough.

It got posted a lot here when the game came out before people adapted. People would also complain about Demon's and Dark Souls a lot too before they adapted though.

People still seething this hard over the first boss in the game is funny, he's the only one that acts like that and he does it specifically and explicitly to counter DS3 rollspammers who think they can just mash O through every fight and never take a hit

Tons of the game is like that if you are underleveled. Bosses have significantly more complex movesets than other Souls games, outside of one or two bosses in other games. I don't think it's a bad thing though, you just have to adapt.

          Anonymous

More complex movesets =/= 37 hit nonstop instakill flurry combos that people keep memeing about every enemy in the game having when it isn't even slightly true

True you can also just use overpowered spells or whatever too. I think it's fun to fight powerful enemies early when possible so I don't have a problem with it. It's probably my favorite aspect of the game.

              Anonymous

That it gives you the option to do either is one of the nicest things about the game and part of what makes it so replayable for me, you can approach any boss or dungeon or encounter however the hell you want and pretty much whenever the hell you want and you're never penalized for it or told you have to do it a specific way. I beat Radagon and Elden Beast the first time with a faith character using a holy weapon despite them both having like 80% holy damage resistance

Before it came out, I was extremely critical of its normification and watering down of the formula. Once I started playing it, I enjoyed it, and enjoyed it pretty much to the end credits. In hindsight, the scope of the game still astonishes me. If they wanted it phone this in, it could have been a third of the size and still acceptable. They were obviously trying to make something huge and they succeeded. Probably the second best game they've ever made after Sekiro.

Having said that, Elden Ring was a great game. First game in a long time that made me enjoy playing a game and I did not want to stop playing it because it was just so enjoyable. I ended up playing it for a whole month straight which is extremely rare, especially for a single player game.

The only part I GENUINELY enjoyed was the first time I went through one of the Chariot dungeons.
Then I felt TRUE enjoyment, the same kind I felt many times during my first playthrough of Dark Souls.

Otherwise it was for 90% a braindead grind.
I know I could have played it in a way that would've made the experience more enjoyable (such as having TT turned on all the time, but because of the GENIUS function of having TT only possible by grinding fricking orange flowers (when you're a shit player, such as I am) it made it unfeasable.

Although I haven't played the game for months (packed my ps4 and all the games in a box that's in storage) I know with 72% certainty that when the DLC drops I'll be digging up my ps4 and play it, and when that happens I'll have TT turned on all the time and I'll be playing

As much as people cry about the caves I really do think that the reason the game falls off after Leyndell is because there's pretty much none left, it's just a straight dash through the MotG which is tiny despite its size and then the endgame bosses. There doesn't feel like there's any real incentive to explore anymore, you have Haligtree which is cool but that's it. I would argue it actually begins falling off at Dragonbarrow which is also incredibly, well, barren and something you probably do around the first time you enter the capital.
Other than that and some genuinely terribly designed bosses, though, it is a fantastic game. The DLC needs to add basically an endgame tier Limgrave/Liurnia as well as 4-5 good bosses and I think it would then be probably my favorite From Soulslike.

Dragonbarrow is tuned for endgame for some reason, it's weird since there isn't really any indication that it should be but all the enemies there are ludicrously strong and you find somberstone 8s and 9s there

            Anonymous

Oh I see what you mean yeah. Yeah that was fricking weird especially since it seemed like you were supposed to go there before even Altus or at least right after Radahn who's still "midgame". Really does feel like there was supposed to be a major area after Leyndell but before MotG

Presentation and plotwise i thought it wasn't bad. It's one of the few linear areas but the walk up to the giant was enjoyable to me beyond leyndell.

        >Hated: Caelid
        Cringe

Caelid's design and art direction is great but most of the enemies and the music sucked. Some crows could follow you for half the map at mount speed.
It's my least ''hated'' place on that row but i wanted to get out of there.
As a magician i didn't have that much to find aside aside from rock sling and the meteor staff for babbymode.

OP here. Not a shazamtroony. I just wished I could’ve enjoyed this game to it’s fullest. Right now I don’t know whether it’s an 8/10 or a 6/10. The sheer amount of freedom and exploration etc is amazing but at the same time… Bosses just aren’t that fun. And level design is very loose compared to previous games

      Anonymous

Lot of the bosses are some of the best ones they've ever made and while the overall world design is obviously looser due to its nature as an open world game the actual main dungeons are just as tight and mazelike as they've ever been, moreso in some cases

        Anonymous

A lot of bosses like apostles, gargoyles, maliketh, morgott, malenia etc just aren’t that fun to fight. And most bosses are kinda ds1-ds2 tier bosses but without being setpieces like ds1 or having neat gimmicks like ds2. Mohg, Godrick, Godfrey and Radahn are pretty good though and rykard/deer/lichdragon/dragonkin soldier are solid setpiece fights.

Level design is definitely loose. Graces are too commonplace and it’s very easy to run past enemy encounters. And by leyndell mobs get stale you’ve fought them all before

Maliketh and Morgott are two of the most fun bosses in the game and some of the most fun bosses they've ever designed, what are you talking about? Literally my only complaint with Morgott is that he dies too fast, fighting him is a fricking blast but it's always over too quickly

I enjoyed the PvE for the most part, There are a few gay enemies and some annoying bosses but nothing terrible. The PvP is a min max homosexual shitshow status effect and ash of war abuse circus, 1000% in the favor of the person being invaded. No solo invasions was a mistake. It can't even hold a candle to Demon Souls/ Dark Souls 1 pvp, which were both definitively more fun and less of an aids fest
