Possibly the only universally accepted as negative thing the game has going for it.

Also the level order being completely linear. No idea why they would ever do that on purpose.

Lots of people do. Why would they make such a weird change that just makes the game worse?

I never understood why people cared about linearity in games like this when they're going to complete those missions eventually anyways. It's like complaining about having to eat your mashed potatoes before your corn.

                Anonymous

If you look at it solely from a "I am going to 100% this game" point a view, then sure it doesn't matter, but a lot of people are just trying to get to the end, especially on their first playthrough, you get little freedom in how you go about doing that, and it makes all the extra shines completely pointless outside of padding out time in 100% runs.

                Anonymous

I can understand not wanting to fully 100% a game sure, but I also never understood doing just the bare minimum to see the credits and then putting it down like the person was given a chore that needs to be done.

        that, and unskippable opening cutscenes
        and

Also the level order being completely linear. No idea why they would ever do that on purpose.

and the boat ride in corona mountain
and the final bowser battle in corona mountain
and actually, corona mountain as a whole
and the elongated boat ride for the lilypad secret
        and the lilypad secret itself
        and the pachinko secret
and the sirena beach slot machines
and the repeated Gatekeeper (goopy piranha plant) fights
        and gelato beach melons
        and the chucksters
and shines not actually mattering towards corona mountain, only shadow mario chases

sorry bros mario sunshine is like "that part: the game". it's just a rushed, unpolished mess despite how fun mario controls

          that about sums it up

I never understood why people cared about linearity in games like this when they're going to complete those missions eventually anyways. It's like complaining about having to eat your mashed potatoes before your corn.

the problem with the linearity is that you needed to do all 6 previous shines before being able to do Shadow Mario which is the only thing that matters for beating the game.
It hurts replayability and even first playthroughs for people who are bad at the game (see everyone who has every complained about the sand bird). Not every shine is great or even good so being able to choose which you want to skip would've at least been nice and would actually reward you for going out of your way to get the secret shines or blue coin ones.

            Anonymous

The only problem I have with the linearity is that I have to wait to get Yoshi's egg from Shadow Mario in the plaza so I can't complete Pianta village before the statue emerges. Sure there's a glitch to get under the slime but that's too much work to get down right.

Walk to the middle of the platform. let the analog go. Hold down the rocket button. fly off into the Pachinko Machine. Press NOTHING. Watch as mario lands on the peg right above the star and stand there.
Congrats. The Pachinko machine is defeated.

Weirds me out that the pachinko and river levels are the ones to have the most complaints about when those are not only optional but are easy to get down if you play them carefully and not act like an impatient moron. I swear I get the angles just right at times but they throw me an entirely different direction for who knows why.

This game made me love tropical island settings, I like how much variety there is in the level themes
    >a little village and a giant hill with a windmill on top
    >a harbor with ships and a large emphasis on climbing
    >a beach with a cool sand sculpture gimmick
    >a fricking amusement park with gay sunflowers at the entrance
    >a hotel with really cool sunset lighting
    >a bay where you scale a huge cliff, tightrope walk, jump on floating water houses and go deep under water to clean a nightmare eel's teeth
    >a comfy floating village where the pianta live with a whole area under it
just a really comfy game that I like to play just to hang out in the world, what a great setting

real life water is full of weird shit itself shitting, pissing and having sex in it. Oh and it can also poison or bite you, frick real life. Few minutes of bliss, hours in the plane suffering. A nice outside pool with a blue bottom is a better bet.

I still find it weird that Nintendo seemed highly interested in tropical themed games around that time. Not only did we have Sunshine, but we also got Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, and Zelda Wind Waker.

I wish there was more documentation of the weird stuff you can find by glitching underwater. There are places where you can run really fast, there are places where you can spray and find hidden shiny sprite symbols that only give you coins. There has to be more, but there's barely any videos about it, I haven't even seen a youtube video with the hidden shine sprite I found as a kid.

      Anonymous

You can probably find them in the 100% speedruns. I haven't played the game in a while but went back to watch one out of curiosity and was fricking stunned at the amount of hidden content and secrets in the world that I hadn't the slightest of clues about. I knew I didn't 100% the game, but I had no idea I was missing 50% of it.

        Anonymous

Nah I'm pretty sure some of the stuff I found as a kid is still pretty out there even for speedrunners. Like I remember a hidden shine sprite near gelato beach after Corona Mountain gets unlocked and Delfino Plaza gets flooded. The player is nudged to go fight the final boss right away, it's the type of shit only an autist kid with no more games can find by just dicking around everywhere he possibly can (Me)

    64 does open design better
Galaxy does gimmick linear levels better
What does sunshine do better? Movement? Only autistic speed runners care about this because the game does not provide any reasonable reason to use the movement in the way people talk about when claiming it has the best movement. Its a very bland game. Its cute though but insanely overrated (albeit it was underrated on release).

The Gamecube is filled with games with TIGHT gameplay. Melee, Sunshine, F-Zero GX, TTYD, Kirby's Air Ride, Double Dash. I don't know what about them, but games aren't made so skill-based and non-patronizing.

Unironically atmosphere/immersion. Not a single other 3D Mario game nails this aspect as much as Sunshine.

What the FRICK where they thinking with this shit? Like, how did they expect players to go about dealing with this? In terms of how it's set up, it seems like you were expected to get it in one try, or use the warp pipe to go back to the plaza and do the Yoshi boat shit again every time you mess up. But that can't possibly be case, right? At the very least they had to have expected players to figure out that if they kill themselves they'll start at the beginning, so they would only do the boar shit again if they ran out of lives.
