Half life 1 is my favorite, I like the atmosphere and gameplay. One theory I always liked was the G-man been a government agent, especially now a days, when conspiracy theories have been flanderized to the point of been parodies of themselves. Half life 1 on the other hand retains that old big brother feeling of old conspiracies, with the g-man following you all the time for example.

Great post. Same here. Half life 1 has that mystery about it while half life 2 despite still being a good game feels far too generic.

I really like the gameplay of half life 2, and the combine as a concept sound interesting, but they are boring in execution, to me at least.

The thing about the combine is that there's hints of something really cool, but it's never elaborated on. They could show us horrors beyond our comprehension that breen describes, ayy lmaos, humans getting turned into synths, the logistics of occupied earth, but instead we get the same three enemies.
Alyx is a tiny better in that regard, showing the shitty prepackaged food humans have to eat or the brains powering coombine computers or hinting at how collaborators deal with the combine with the shadow lady, but we could still have more. I kinda wisj we got that cut breencast giving people a propagandized version of the black mesa incident.

I agree with you anon. The combines are cool in concept, but in execution they could have learned something of the stroggs for example, the stroggs wich are aliens and humans mechanically enhanced, have a lot of variety to their designs, like humans been combined with tanks, mechanical birds, the iron maidens, even the soldiers come in different flavors of much human to less human and more mechanical and with more firepower.
Maybe not do the combine so outlandish, but the concept of bio-mechanical enhanced soldiers lends itself to a lot of cool ideas.

as someone who played HL1 and 2 just last year, I must say I prefer HL1.

2 feels like it doesn't explain anything. you show up out of nowhere and do some battle missions and suddenly its over. idk

The 90's were the best era to be into conspiracy shit.
And, yeah. The g-man's deal being left vague is something I much prefer over how personally invested he seems to get on the episodes forward.

I think that the problem with mysteries and sequels is that, people tend to gravitate toward the mystery a lot, so for the sequel to grab more attention it needs more of that, but a mystery by nature thrives in it been shown less. So the two seem to be at odds with each other. What we end up with in this case, is the g-man been shown way to much, to the point that it's just normalized (contrary to half life, which apart from some occasions, you had to actively look for him), and not enough to understand him. But he sure is gonna remind you of his plans and how they are kind of falling apart.

Why? Its ten times shorter than half life and has absolutely nothing new to offer. No new weapons, no new enemies. I dont get why it even exists in the first place.

it was supposed to be an exclusive part of half-life for the Dreamcast port as an incentive for people to buy it again
op4 was to be pc exclusive, and decay was to be PS2 exclusive

Would you consider something like this cannon? HL:A is in a weird place because it's basically all an artificial event created by the gman.

      Here's your Half-Life 3, bro.
I did really like it though.

What, you mean Alyx as a whole? It seems to be the set up for a new canon. Not a guarantee that we're getting HL3, but after Epistle 3 was released the end of Alyx seemed like them saying
      >okay, if we do do Half-Life 3, we're retconning the end of the last game so don't just expect Epistle 3

I really like the gameplay of half life 2, and the combine as a concept sound interesting, but they are boring in execution, to me at least.

I loved the menagerie of Xen enemies in the first game, and 2 definitely falls short in that regard. I was very disappointed to find that Alyx was literally just headcrabs and ant-lions again.
I get that having a whole load of very colourful aliens would offset the sterile and all encompassing feeling of the Combine, whose use of human soldiers adds a lot to their MO, but more variety in synths and troops would have been nice. I like the ones added by Alyx. More Hunter scale enemies for variety beyond humans in body armour but not quite boss battle tier like striders and gunships would have been cool.

I spent the entire of Half Life 2 waiting for the interesting alien enemies and Xen levels that never came. Instead I got stormtroopers, shitty vehicles and more stormtroopers.

HL2 was bland dogshit. HL1 was the GOAT.

I mean, soldiers were always supposed to be augmented. It's the sacrifice you're gonna have to make if you're too good a cop. I wish we could see more of barney. Toeing the line where he isn't a frickup enough to get stalkered but tries not to be a good enough cop that he gets picked to be turned into a soldier.

Based. That paki boy is kinda weird, but he's alright sometimes.
HL's ost is an odd case, because it's good, but it's pretty much straight up ripped samples most of the time. It makes sense since Bailey is a programmer first and music was his hobby.
Either way, have some more fan music. I really like this one. It feels alien.

Its weird but i never liked hl that much even tho i played it since 2000.
And yet i keep replaying it again and again and appreciating it each time more.
Years go by, the market is oversaturated with fps that use the sand mechanisms but valve captured the essence of these moves just right.
I used to hate on a rail and thought vehicle sections of hl2 were the worst, for example.
And it just blows my mind how good both first and second game hold. Episodes err not so much. Still, the overall effort must've been enormous.
As for hl3, if rather it never be released. Let things stay the way they are now. I'm glad that we have what we have.

Ah, I just replayed these games (HL1 and OF) this weekend. It goes without saying, but they're both classics.
I consider it a pretty bold move to give a Deagle as a first gun to a player, but it works well enough.

i believe in the theory that g-man is the one that ordered/got the hecu to kill the scientists.
the us goverment wanting to kill the scientists so nobody would learn what they were doing never made clear sense to me.
why would the us be afraid of france or germany learning the the experiments with portal technology.
    BUT
If the scientists who have knowledge about local teleportation got catured by the combine, that would be a disaster.
and fits in with g-man planing far ahead

      Anonymous

Then he send the black ops to kill the hecu? Who would have killed the black ops??

        Anonymous

its not dangerous that the combine knows humans have made local teleportation, but that there are no more human teleporter experts so they cant pass it on to the combine

      Anonymous

I think knowledge getting out that the US had managed to not only invented teleportation but had also discovered and been interacting with a parallel universe would have caused some shit.
I do agree that Geeman was probably the one who made the call but I think there's a chance he was actually working with the government under some persona at the time. He'd have a justification for sending in the HECU to kill everyone, but the real reason would be slaughtering everyone who could stop the resonance cascade so the Earth would be left open to invasion.

      Anonymous

I wanna see Breen's role in all this shit. He knew the G-man before shtf, he personally wanted the test to go through, but was he just a nerd who wanted to do dumb science or did he actively get the invasion going because he was he promised the role of earth emperor beforehand?

        Anonymous

he was the first one able to communicate with the combine so at some point he had to gain knowledge of what they are and the best way to talk to them before the seven hour war, whether this means he knew what the likely end result would be or gman came to him later on and gave him a deal is debatable

        Anonymous

i dont know why people think breen wants to rule or is an egomanical dictator.
nothing in the game implies this.
ive only seen this meme in half life discussions
When gordon appeared, was he just supposed to go
        >frick yeah, reincarnated jesus with a physics degree has appeared, the eternall and infinite combine is fricked now!
his reaction to the combine loosing their patience is more sensible than the rebels who consider gordon their new god

          Anonymous

Sure, but bootlickers get the rope pretty much. I think Breen's motivations were intended to be purely self-preservative though, I don't think he wanted to "rule" either

        Anonymous

I imagine G-Man told him there were other universes and pointed him in the direction of getting to them, and Breen thought he'd be declared super cool science king forever if he was the one who gave humanity access to infinite space, energy and resources by unlocking them. I don't think he knew the Combine would invade, he was just the one with the most knowledge of what the frick was happening and so was the first to act when it came to making a deal, but it was a desperate attempt to salvage a fricked situation. Like, even if you get to be king of the world under the Combine, holy shit it does not seem worth it. He hardly seems to be living like a king; his only concern at this point is probably ensuring that some pathetic scrap of humanity in the form of Overwatch gets to survive. I doubt the Combine ever needed Breen and would have just steam rolled Earth without him.
