      That's a shader, not a filter.

        What is the difference?

Branding it as "CRT trinitron immersive lore-friendly" makes me feel like it does more than a bilinear

Is there a technical reason why indie fags dont include shaders for their 8-bit games?

        Anonymous

I've seen some games with crt shaders.

          Anonymous

Like actual, functional good ones? The ones I've seen are just joke filters/shaders that make the image worse.

            >actual good ones
I don't think so. Making one that's actually good requires a lot of time and effort, and many developers use pixel art because they don't have the time/money/skill for anything better. Good modern pixel art doesn't need it, so the only games that would need it are made by people who aren't able/willing to make such a shader.

Yes, programming shaders requires you to actually be able to program.
Indie devs barely know how to use scripting languages for premade game engines.

I've seen some "retro" computer games (new games with "playstaion" graphics) that include CRT screen effects. They usually look like shit, though.

        Anonymous

Because unlike what Ganker wants you to believe, most don't do pixel art because "muh retro, muh nostalgia", but simply because it's easier and/or they like the look. Those that do want to look retro do sometimes have a filter nowadays, and those that REALLY want to be retro do homebrew/rom hacking.
Remember, the crt filter argument only works for games made with the intention of being played on CRT through one of those shitty old video cables.
Also, I'd consider filters bloat, you should use your own external filter program or use a real CRT if you really care.

It would highlight how dogshit their pixel art actually is. But there are some that do have them.

      >Good modern pixel art doesn't need it
This is retarded. It's all decided by the type of display you expect the game to be played on.

Do people still use this garbage? There's no excuse anymore, if you don't like raw pixels then there are plenty crt shaders you can use.

if you got fucked up eyes like me and things don't look clear at a distance you don't need CRT shaders, I win 🙂

          Probably Royale
The only ones worth using are Royale, or Mega Bezel (which has many presets including one that resembles Royale, which is what I use)
For lower end computers there's NewPixie.

            Anonymous

            >Probably Royale
It is not. Royale doesn't look anything like that.

              Anonymous

Royale has a shitload of settings.

                Anonymous

In the case that it is Royale and it needs to be configured to the point that it looks nothing like the default settings, then just saying "it's Royale" is utterly useless.

retroarch lets you use shaders in any game

Retroarch has a ton of pre-installed shaders that you can enable in the quick menu. I recommend royale.

You weren't meant to notice the pixels, the graphics were designed to use the CRT screen to mechanically smooth the image.
