That's a really low quality pic. What distro?
I keep a windows machine because why not. But I mainly use Linux. W10 is probably the last microshill OS I'm going to use on any personal computer.

How is it on Intel? No problems with any games so far?

i had to disable cpu c states due to an annoying whine type noise that would happen anytime i scrolled, clicked on anything etc. it went away after editing a grub file, so other than that pretty smoothly, im only playing witcher 3, cs go and sonic frontiers rn and they all seem to perform fine

Using Proton-GE? IIRC that doesn't come built in and you had to download it off proton-up QT in Nobara.

So it's the CPU that makes this weird noise? I'm not on Linux but been having this occasionally when I do specific tasks on PC.

Could be anything such as GPU and psu

          Anonymous

yeah its p much "cpu whine" for lack of a better term, also could in some cases be capacitors on the motherboard i guess but regardless, disabling c-states fixed that up immediately for me. u can do it in bios also

How long until valve makes Linux actually as good as say windows 7?
If I had millions of dollars I’d pay Linux developers to make a clone of windows 7

Define what you mean by as good as windows 7.

In some aspects some distros are already as good as windows 7. I guess I mostly mean to be able to do a lot with gui menus instead of having to use command line just to run the Linux equivalent of an exe. I wish Linux could run any windows application. There’s some applications that don’t have good replacements or ports to Linux. Like foobar2000 and notepad++. Then there’s the obvious of it not running every game.

          Anonymous

I've seen foobar2000 vanilla being used for daily use, a custom GUI setup would probably be a b***h to get running. Not sure about notepad++. There's no getting away from the terminal, even Windows power users use powershell or whatever is the equivalent now. And yeah while multiplayer has problems almost everything in my Steam library of singleplayer games are playable.

I might switch over to Linux when windows 10 dies then. Hopefully by then the open source nvidia drivers are good.

You can literally just run this with
          >wine ./foobar2000.exe
and it works 100%. I moved on to quodlibet but this isn't an obstacle.

Linux already better than Windows 7 because it can run dx12 titles

Then read up on the Nvidia fixes, looks like there's shit in there that would be a headache doing by yourself as a first-time user.

Anyone managed to install Linux on a gaming laptop? Lenovo Legion to be precise. Arch Wiki says it's compatible but I don't want to risk it yet and wondered about other distros.

What's there to risk? It either works or it doesn't.

        Bricking the laptop.

And how would installing another OS brick the laptop? Do you have access to BIOS/UEFI that isn't fricked over by secureboot? If I were you I would look further to see if all the hardware is supported without any bugs before doing anything.

You cannot brick a PC with an OS.

You really only need to check if you have drivers available for your stuff and whether your laptop has an NVIDIA card or not. Novideo = a pain in the ass, doubly so with laptops. If you have an AMD card then you're good to go.

Works fine on Nobara, the catch being the GPU must support 515 driver.

I have no problems with games on linux, but modding can be a pain in the ass. Lot of indie software that will break when not on windows.
Currently attempting to run the unity mod manager unsuccesfully on manjaro.

      >modding can be a pain in the ass.
what options are there to handle mods anyway? don't tell me you have to do everything manually like the bad old days

        Anonymous

Modding skyrim with the mod manager werks, but you have to look up a couple of tutorials.
I'm trying to get the unity mod manager to work for pathfinder but to no avail.
Steam workshop modd may or may not work out of the box depending on the game, you need to find the folder where they are stored if they don't work, and you have to manually install them.
This is what I have learned with the little experimentation I did.

Those work out of the box. See: Stellaris, Divinity Original Sin 2.

As I said, it depends on the game. Total war attila mods will not work out of the box, because the launcher of the game does not exist on linux and the game launches without activating the mods.
