W11 LTSC will be the last sane option to game on Windows.

They're just delusional, no one wants to use their barely functional dogshit OS. The vast majority of people want to have a computer that works, Linux doesn't without thousands of hours of fricking around and even if people have the skills, why would you want to waste that much time? The answer is they don't.

I think Linux is fine, i'll never use it, but the fans are insane if they think Linux will ever be more than a very very small novelty to the majority of computer users.

Imagine if every time you went to the store, you had to cut your own meat and packet it instead of having the butcher do it. And every time you don't know how to cut the meat or when you almost slice your finger off, the butcher laughs at you and calls you a gay for not having a butchering certificate or spending 500 hours on a course.

The person handing you bags of israelite slices isn't the butcher, moron. The real butcher is somewhere in the back, if the store has one at all.

I wonder what you're going to do when you learn panera bread doesn't actually cook any of the food itself. The soups come in a bag. They're unloaded from a truck and heated up.

Forced to use blender in linux, goodbye easy addon support instead enjoy wine bridging. Why the frick would I ever want to use Linux? The majority of linux users are certified spergs, and the linux threads that pop up on /v every once in a while are the biggest advertisement to never installing linux or interacting with average linux users since you're all jerking off over who has the best edgiest linux distro with who has the coolest system settings asci logo. lmao

blender is cool and is a good tool and there are addons on most linux software for work, not trying something by not wanting to use something else is an issue of your part even more when there are useful options which even if they have issues they are still extremely useful (gimp even if it has a very messy ai really works and it's better than what the 8 year greentext said and blender is pretty powerful with just being different being the only concern).
personally even if they are different just having the software and working directly without pay expenses is much better than propietary solutions which have a lot of issues and in general aren't even normally more useful but more known, not being easy to use but people knowing their quirks and thus their mistakes being not easily seen, distro masturbation is just a simple moronic action but that doesn't reflect that something isn't useful, just that they are morons who boast about dumb shit.

I'm sick of the revisionism about 7. People were literally saying they'd rather use Vista than 7 here for years. People outright said they'd only use XP instead of 7 because 7 was such dogshit. 7 only started getting praise and people upgrading to it after SP2 or SP3, I forgot which it was. Point being, it took several years for anyone to start recommending it and most people said to stay off of it and stick to XP.

W10 support ending isn't going to what pushes them to Linux.

It's the fact that the EU has passed a law to force corporations to scan devices/PC using AI for text or images for "unwanted" sentiment. That means if you're on Windows and live within the EU, they'll come knocking on your door if you write anything closely racist. That's what will force users to adopt Linuxl, so they can at the very least escape the insanity of what Windows will be.

Needs to be mentioned that lawyers all over the place consider these chat controls a non starter that will be taken down by the courts in an instance because it violates numerous constitutional (across the EU) privacy laws and the postal secrecy law (as chat messages are as protected as your mail).

This is a misconception, most tasks can be done via GUI. It's just that the command line is universal while there's a large selection of GUI frontends for different tasks that change every now and then and nobody is going to bother writing guides on how to do something for every version of every application.

no, in general just put linux mint or a certain distro and you don't need to touch the terminal ever, that thing is for complex programs and the dude who responded you is overblowing the ui's which just follow the click button to do x because that's the only way of making an ui in these systems by the api's they use.

Until devs start porting their games to Linux (frick Proton nobody wants to bother toying with that shit) it will never happen. Linux support isn't even difficult if devs decide to do it from the get-go. Bro... I've seen this cope being said about every windows version since w98.
Turns out that there is always one or two features that frick you over, and microsoft will literally pay developers to make sure that the lack of that feature will make their games/software unusable.
You might get some hardcore enthusiast manually fixing dlls or whatever like they do over that windows7 subreddit, but eventually they'll just give up, they always give up and then you're fricked.
Nowadays the only windows7 browser that can pass cloudflare checks is firefox ESR, and when they end support, the few remaining win7 gays will be phased out of the internet since everyone and their grandma uses cloudflare for bot protection. (it doesn't work anyway)

What about SteamOS would be better than any other beginner-friendly distro that already exists? Installing Steam isn't hard. Just pick a distro that comes with KDE (or, really, any desktop environment that isn't GNOME), and then install Steam on it.
      >but there are 9001 distros
Yes, and you just have to pick one that isn't Gentoo or Ubuntu.

Midwit meme, unused ram is only unused until you need it. Why have it filled up with dumb shit you never ever use?

Optimizing your DE means you can move your config between any device you own. I use the same WM/config I do on my main PC as I do a raspberry pi 3 I use as a cam monitor without sacrificing anything on either environment.

Never understood the unused equals bad meme. Do they have benchmarks constantly running in the background to make sure their system is always hitting 90%+ usage? You used the minimum required resources to accomplish a goal. If you can accomplish something with the same efficiency and less RAM usage, that's strictly better. Is this why modern games are so unoptimized. Arbitrarily using more resources with no gain for no reason other than just because.

Easy of use and all the necessary software for gaming + drivers installed by default.
Also, a Valve supported distro would mean less troubleshooting with HDR, gamescope and Steam mostly.
Just the fact that Ubuntu is pushing for installing Steam through snap (which has tons of problems) has been a major factor for me.

A lot of people don't want to buy a Steam Deck or shitty prebuilt. Just advertise Proton and make sure the average gaymer knows that their games will run fine on Linux. Anyone interested will figure out how to install an OS, not like it's hard. Ubuntu couldn't be any easier honestly, pretty sure you can run the installer inside Windows, then after a reboot it takes over and installs Ubuntu.

SteamOS is great but I wish it wouldn't suffer from the usual linux problems. Like the filesystem needs to be completely changed up already. It makes sense for embedded systems, but not as a PC. I don't understand why they don't just have folders for the stuff you install with all the configs and shit inside that just get mounted over the linux filesystem, versus having to find loose files sprawled all across the filesystem

it's standard because it's normally uses.
windows has a lot more non standard programs because microshart doesn't give any general path and in general an open system even if it has standards will always have outliers, this is worse on wangblows because of the way dos is made caused windows to make new directories for each program, this was useful when dos used them to identify but it isn't good when there are a thousand config files which overlap one on another, the hub protected structure of unix causes programs to have just a general config area or to simply being local, thus not generating dos lunacy which modern windows is inspired (even if in dos it was better by the software having paths with sense instead of the modern windows lunacy).

I wasn't saying the solution of Windows is perfect, but it's better than Linux, because all those folders are consolidated on its own partition.

In fact I do prefer how Wine works on Linux over actual Windows, because everything is now consolidated into a single directory, without anything being littered outside of it. You can just have a whole directory filled with games that all get mounted as needed. This is just something Linux needs to adapt too. Just have everything natively related to the system in /sys/, that has like /etc/ /cfg/ /bin/ etc, then have something like /app/ that contains folders like /team fortress 2/ -> /etc/ /bin/ /cfg/.

You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done. Now, if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain’t you. You’re better than that!

What's the difference? The bug report is indicative of the existence of a bug.
The fact that the bug exists only on one platform is a different matter entirely; that dev was clearly bothered by the fact that their game had so many issues that were Linux-exclusive, not that they were getting too many reports.

          >What's the difference? The bug report is indicative of the existence of a bug.
          Yes. That's the difference.
          >that dev was clearly bothered by the fact that their game had so many issues that were Linux-exclusive, not that they were getting too many reports.
Other developers have stated that Linux users were more likely to report bugs affecting all platforms. I'll let someone else post the screenshot of the popular example because I don't have it and I'm not going to look for it.
In any case, if a developer makes a game for Windows and Linux and only the Linux version has a given bug, that's still a skill issue on the developer's part. A lot of games have busted-ass Linux ports, but a lot of other games' Linux ports work just fine. It's not the operating system that's fricking up the ones that suck. It's developers being bad at their jobs.

yeah and a week later a CDPR dev said he found similar numbers in his own work, yet 99% of those reports were also consistent issues on Windows. The difference is that Linux users are MUCH more likely to let you know when an issue comes up.

Pluged a PS4 controller I also found in the trash I was able to use the touchpad as a mouse and use a few buttons right after plugging it in. a debloat script cannot remove the dumb processes windows has, it's better but isn't as good as the functional and optimized performance of linux based os's

It's simply easier to build up something from a really lean base than it is to rip out functionality of a gigantic bloated package. That's why linux is so neat because you can build to your requirements by adding the modular pieces of software ontop of it. You can use the same compatable environment across any range of devices.

There's three key components that make up a "Linux".

    The OS itself.
    The Desktop Environment.
The Windows (like folder windows not the Windows OS) Manager, which is usually linked with the Desktop Environment so don't worry about this one.

The Desktop Environment is probably more crucial than which OS you pick. That's what people are talking about when you hear things like:
    GNOME
    KDE
    xfce
and others. It's how you actually interact with the OS, the keyboard shortcuts, how the desktop looks, how the folders work.

GNOME sucks. I tried it first and almost dropped Linux entirely because it is THAT radically different. Switched to KDE and it's really similar to Windows 7 (the last Windows I used) that it was an easy switch. The keyboard shortcuts are the same, too, which helped.
Games also didn't even run properly or at all while using GNOME. It's a mess for video games. It was such a pain in the ass for me. Just avoid it.

Half of Linux users are actually Steam Decks. The real market share for Loonix is less than 1.2%.

That's almost the same as before the Deck launched, over two years ago. And Deck sales will plummet once Windows handhelds get cheaper. This is a temporary speed bump for Windows, nothing more.

Handheld PCs will forever be expensive because companies like Asus and Lenovo can not afford to subsidize the hardware like Steam can with the Deck
Even the chinkshit handheld PCs are just as expensive as full featured laptops
The only chance a Windows handheld could ever be "cheap" is if Microsoft makes a subsidized Xbox-branded Windows handheld but even then I can't see how Microsoft would recuperate the subsidy unless they force game purchases through the Xbox store or have someway of identifying Steam purchases from accounts that have an Xbox handheld associated with them and get a share of the revenue

I use Linux as my daily operating system of choice. I have professionally used, supported, and wrote software for Windows (and still do). Why did I switch?

Dealing with Windows is now more of a pain that dealing with Linux. Random unstoppable updates, bloatware included in every version, Spyware you have to manually disable, compatability layers to run older software... When in linux I can just install from the Software Center from Flathub or just run my older games through Proton. Little to no diagnostics required.

The user experience has been exactly how I want my OS to be: get me into the damn software I want to use, and use it well. I dedicate less than 5% of my system resources to running Linux, Windows takes 10% on idle. I barely even need to think about it besides when I want to update my drivers, and if I need to do any technical stuff, it's easy. I recommend everyone at least tries it.

I encourage people to try linux but understand that using it isn't for everyone. It's not really that a person couldn't learn, it really is easy once you get it. It's the getting it part.
After learning to use Windows for years and getting comfortable with it it's a huge pain in the ass to then move to another OS and not know how to do basic shit. It's gotten waaaay better than it used to be but some people don't want to learn how to ride a bike again.
If you got a spare drive and some time give it a shot, you will probably like it. And if not, that's cool too.

      Anonymous

Never understood this. The OS is important sure, but from a end-user stand point. It's all the same really. Once you open up a browser it doesn't matter what OS you're using. Once you pop open steam it doesn't matter what OS you're using. Hell even installing isn't all that different. You click a few buttons on a GUI or type some lines into a terminal. It's a very minute different. Majority of people will never appreciate the differences between OSs.

That's a pretty accurate take. I was shocked at how quickly I did relearn how to "ride the bike" so to speak, but it wasn't until I forced myself to use exclusively linux for a couple of months until I did. That isn't for everybody, and it would be a pretty big interruption to your day to day workflow if its the PC you use for work. It isn't hard, but it is uncomfortable and unfamiliar for a few weeks.

windows 11 is fine. dark mode for everything. new paint, new terminal, new text editor. it's stable. you can even uninstall edge now. no internet explorer by default. my old printer from over 10 years works fine with windows 11 too.
    just ignore all the morons.
if your main disk is still using MBR, DO NOT USE mbr2gpt, this shit fricked with my kernel and fried my ram. make a clean install instead. (windows 11 only works with gpt)
this is just typical. everybody claiming to have all those problems, and meanwhile for me everything runs perfectly fine.
i dont even understand all those morons who constantly claim their pc is breaking, maybe its just tech illiterate boomers i dunno.
one thing i disliked is that you have to login with your microsoft account to install the os, but you can circumvent that by
    a) installing windows 10 first and then upgrading
    or
    b) run some cmd command you can find on youtube tutorials

I remember when ubuntu would ship with an mp3 of the fox and the grapes. Now you can't even post the title in youtube comments without your comment getting shadowbanned.

Linux is and has always been fine as a desktop OS. Even in the days of ndiswrapper and awful pre-valve-update nvidia drivers being the only suitable graphic drivers you could get. AMD didn't even have drivers for Linux back then, and we all still ran compiz just fine. Anybody who can't use it on their desktop today is just bad at computers.

Don't hate Linux simply because you couldn't reach the grapes.

The average person hates thinking and loves their comfort zone. This was true long before Linux existed. It just so happens Linux is the overlap of both.

The 13th century statement still remains true:

It has nothing to do with 12 year old zoomers.
Linux's userbase would be far greater today if its community did not behaved like a "special club".
The masses will not ruin their workflows or stop playing the games they like in favor of "free software".
They just want things to work, if things are not working as they should, they will go back to Windows, even if Windows sucks.

The reason why Linux isn't as widespread as Windows these days is due to its community, normies do not care if their software is open source or closed source, normies just want to click things and see them work.
Opening a CLI to do basic things is something out of the DOS era, normies don't want to be bothered with terminals. Anything that involves a CLI scares the shit ouf of them, even if it's easy.

This is why you morons underestimate Linux. The terminal is extremely powerful. It's one of the best features of Linux. It's made by IT folks, for IT folks. I can (and often do) write entire programs that I'll never use again and that perform complex tasks on the fly, on a single line, and it takes only minutes. STDIN and STDOUT are so fricking awesome. The terminal is wielded by the wise and mocked by the ignorant.

Honestly Linux just fails just like how LGBT shit fails. Windows is like the proud white male, it stands strong and uses a strong set of default applications and standards which make it work. In the meanwhile Linux is all LGBT infighting shit because they are constantly fighting eachother which distro is better or which desktop enviroment is better. Imagine being Nvidia and having to please every moron using different wayland desktops. There's even systemd vs non-systemd autism so that 2% on steam is all fragmented tiny groups of morons argueing with eachother which distro or other autistic shit is better. Linux users are basically just LGBT people who are obessed with making their distro/desktop choices their identity, especially Arch users are the most vocal even if Gentoo is the far superior chad option but that's too hard for those morons.

Yes, this is the first and foremost reason as why Linux is so unpopular among normal users.
A windows installation just require you to put in a disc (they are still a thing somehow) or just insert a USB with the booatble installation and click next 15 or so times until it installs itself.
Then once you get windows working, assuming you're connecte don the internet, Windows itself scans its servers to download for you the drivers that you need.

That's not the case for Linux, where you have to manually download tons of repositories and dependencies to make work even the most basic shit like audio drivers.

All that shit is already done by the install wizard (unless you're running an autistic Distro like Arch or Gentoo), the real problem is picking up a Distro in the first place, paralysis of choice and all that crud.

Everything from man pages, to distrowatch, to tutorials on ISO download pages explaining EXACTLY how to create a USB boot stick, how to boot into a live session, and how to install, walking you through the whole process step by step, just to name a few. "Your" meaning who's garbage? Microsoft's? Some third party winblows developers? Linux developers?

You understand that we didn't create the windows software that you can't get working on Linux, right? It's not created for Linux, hell M$ actively works to hinder it from working on Linux, and then you throw a tantrum because it doesn't work on Linux?

WINE/Proton has always had spotty performance issues because M$ keeps updating things like DX, .Net, XNA, and even NTFS, to make it hard for Linux folks to get Micro(tiny)soft(limp) software working. We've been explaining this for decades. You're not hearing us.

But just so I understand, you want us to do what then? Beg harder for MS to stop fricking everything up for us? To maybe even work with us to make an even better OS than them? Do you see why that may not happen?

And who's fault is that? Talk to EA. Talk MS. Talk to anybody but the Linux crowd because they're not the ones keeping this shit from running on Linux. They're simply getting yelled at because you have garbage taste.

If these companies truly wanted to, they could make this shit work on Linux WITHOUT those mean ol' lunix devs pointing and laughing at poor little you. Maybe you should shoot them an email?

why do people who never used linux make up a fantasy version of linux in their heads where running an .exe takes twenty lines of code to be mad about?the only problem i had with linux is running old games like warlords battlecry and cossacks 2 and even then i managed to make it work in less than an hour, is it really that hard to accept you dont have experience with it and either try it out or shut up?

      >why do people who never used linux make up a fantasy version of linux in their heads
Because they made up a fantasy version of themselves in their heads. They want to believe they can't possibly be the reason they suck so bad at something. So they simply fabricate a different reason for it instead.

Then how come the general consensus about linux is just that it's annoying to use because shit barely ever works just out of the box?
There was not a time where I didn't had to lookup an obscure forum thread about a semi-unknown issues that occurred at like 4 other people besides me.

You guys are either just delusional or have all the time in the world to tweak shit on your computer. You need to understand that not every people want to spend countless hours trying different solutions to make their shit work.

i have never had to do more than putting wine or just executing the program, windows was more moronic on how it works by a lot by asking for specific drivers or not working by breaking compatibility for example.

how the frick you frick up installing drivers on windows? you don't even need to install it, windows does it everything in 2 reboots. Pretty much you think you're too smart about computer.

you still need to do this shit if something fricks up, this includes fricking dll's which frick the game into shit as well, something that linux solves easily without issues.

in general in linux you don't do this shit while on windows the shit is so moronic that is only accepted because people got accustomed to his bullshit rather than anything else.

In general this kind of bullshit isn't a problem on Linux precisely because everything is open source and recompiling is an option to resolve API/ABI breaks

Driver DLLs only contained in system32, they should of course it would frick your games if they're corrupted. I never EVER EVER had case where my driver shit itself, next time, don't buy cheap chink SSD that corrupt itself in 4 months

windows programs have local dll's on the program in of itself, what i'm talking about dll's is when the program doesn't fricking have them (which has happened by moronation of the person putting the thing or windows being moronic with the dll's) and you have to scower the fricking things, in general play a windows game without steam and you will see how moronic the shit is, even more on specific games which remove certain data and more, the fact that you think that it's sdd corruption by being moronic isn't my issue Black person.

You'll have to put wine/proton prefix on a linux filesystem, but the game files can be read from NTFS.

That's fine, I was just trying to self contain as much as possible to the bootable stick but games are fricking obnoxiously huge even for a 128gb stick.

See this, but keep in mind that provided instructions are as generic as possible, i.e. your distro probably has a GUI option to do the same things, like partition mounting

Depends on the game, if it's contained in one folder you probably can, if the files are spread across the system you need to pass them to a wine prefix which is not really viable outside of copying all your windows files to a wine prefix.

Is that including subfolders or do you mean those obnoxious ass games that drop shit in documents, appdata, and program files all at once for some fricking unknown reason?
It's all contained within steam/steamapps so hopefully it can read from that?

          Anonymous

Steam libraries can be shared I think, never tried it myself tho. I can imagine there being a problem with save files too, as Linux Steam and Windows Steam will be looking for them in different places if there's no Steam Cloud. Also NTFS + Steam doesn't work out of the box on Linux.

      Anonymous

      Yes. No. Kinda. It depends.

NTFS is made by MS and it's proprietary. That means closed source. So to make use of it, Linux folks have to depend on their own drivers, which they had to make their selves. And, because MS actively works to undo Linux progress, those drivers aren't always the best.

In short, it's complicated. You just have to try it and see, then google whatever errors come your way. Ideally, you should put the software on a proper ext4 or btrfs file system before you even try. Don't use NTFS if you're using Linux.

Yes, we've all thought of the same idea as you and no, it's not a good idea. Don't blame Linux. Blame MS.

That's pretty much what I was expecting but the last time I also looked up something like this was several years ago. If it helps i'm still a windows 7 holdout trying to get my toes wet but waiting on a new PC build to go full-ass into it.
