bros when was the exact moment that all the soul left this franchise?
i'm gonna say gen 5.
posting this banger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUodEXn0dBM
It wasn't BW, but BW2 that made me realize the Pokemon I knew was gone. Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum were all versions I looked forward to that fixed many issues with the prior releases, while still being dependent on the earlier ones to have 100% completion. Seeing BW2 instead of a proper third title to cap off BW was all I needed to know that the franchise was gone.
Wasn't Deoxys an event-only?
Yes, but for RSE the rocket ship to Deoxys was the Mew hiding under the truck from RBY.
>NOOOOOOOOO THEY GAVE ME A NEW GAME INSTEAD OF JUST REHASHING THE GAME FOR A THIRD TIME
And to think you aren't actually joking, just what is it that makes pokémon naggers like this?
Nah, bw2 were the send off, they went into soul overdrive in that game, which is why there's so little left for the future games (I believe that no game in the series is 100% soulless, but they hit their greatest low with swsh)
Anon, you do realise you're replying to a painfully obvious troll, yeah? If you stop to think about what that anon is saying, he wanted the developers to release the previous game a second time with minor fixes rather than what happened with B2W2, which is to say an expanded sequel game using much of the same assets but with a bunch of extra on top. So either a non-self-aware retard or a troll.
The EXACT moment the soul left the franchise was a week after ORAS.
Everything was on the uptick until Gen 7. Gen 6 was a flop but showed promise. ORAS was absolutely filled with SOVL but had so many things that detracted from it that it flopped and is remembered poorly. But sun and moon? They stopped giving a shit and just started milking games. As evidenced by the fact that they released it four fucking times. We’ve been past the point of needing more than a single game for a while, probably since BW, but S and M was the first time there was literally zero difference between the games. Even the box legendaries have the exact same powers and cutscenes. But they released Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon for 60 bucks each. And the grand total of differences between all those games? A mon roster a side story update a final boss skin and a 30 minute dlc quest. Every game past it has been part of the downward spiral of worse and worse games with more glitches and less fun.
I will say that the new mon quality was overall higher than BW and XY dex, but the regional variants were 90% shit and get even more points docked for being kanto pandering. Goliscopod brings it way the fuck up for being the coolest bug type we’ve had EVER.
You are correct, I forgot. I payed for the dual pack both times so I could have one and give the other to my brother so I was very upset when USUM happened. Especially since I had been avoiding any info due to potential spoilers at the time, the story in SM was one of the few things it did alright.
The soulless pokemon animations in x&y were the sign, but we all assumed they'd improve in future games and we gave them the benefit of the doubt as they'd just had to do hundreds of 3d pokemon animations at once.
Sun/Moon is weird case where it feels like GameFreak kind of tried with the story, but the actual gameplay is feels like it's boring. You're basically handheld everywhere and it feels like there's no exploration.
Also, even in terms of story, a number of characters like Plumeria and Gladion just kind of exist and barely get to do things.
>Gladion
Man, I hate how they handled him >plastered all over promotional material about how he's Team Skull's "Enforcer" >you finally meet him in the game and the "Enforcer" is being called a loser and made fun of by lowly Team Skull grunts who suddenly appear after you beat him
Does Gladion even end up doing anything for Team Skull? I don't remember, he's just kind of there and any story related bit to him just goes nowhere became gamefreak blew their load the moment he showed up
It's worse because it looks like absolute dogshit in comparison, anon
And that's just the visuals which were the relevant part to this discussion

Having actual animations is a drawback when the game has to play that animation constantly and it doesn't fit
We were stuck with all flying types having a permanent flying animation even when that didn't make sense for the pokemon for multiple fucking generations because they developed them around the shitty sky battle gimmick and were too lazy to make new ones later, you dumb nagger

Yeah, nice cherrypicking. Why don't you compare it to the colosseum model? Or better yet, use one of the 90% models that look like shit, like Meowth for instance. But I bet you won't, you filthy kalosperm
I still love pokemon, but I would say gen8. I hate gen6, but gen7 was still a great game. While gen9 has a great story out of all the 3d titles, alola has great characters and charme (it is underused as hell).
First game blue, childhood game ruby, but game I love to play bw.
DP (gen 4; Sinnoh) is when the franchise became the same uninspired shit over and over: 8 gyms, elite 4, champion, 1 evil team using [Box art legendary here] to take over the world! At least Hoenn was 2 teams and the start of the trope. Sinnoh game were where they told the exact same story again with interchangeable characters.
With online is where comphomosexualry boomed in popularity (unfortunately) and they didn't really try with the visuals, type variety, too many HMs, etc.
An uninspired interchangeable sequel in a list of many that doesn't provide anything interesting. Hence the "faithful" remakes flopped critically because the foundation wasn't exactly interesting to begin with.
>DP (gen 4; Sinnoh) is when the franchise became the same uninspired shit over and over: 8 gyms, elite 4, champion, 1 evil team using [Box art legendary here] to take over the world!
The only instance of any of the evils teams attempting to awaken and capture a Legendary Pokemon for the purpose of "taking over the world" was in BW. >At least Hoenn was 2 teams
Two teams but they somehow felt even more similar than Galactic grunts and admins did with one another. >visuals
but enough about Gen 3 with the awful overworld NPC sprites, the lack of animated sprites until Emerald despite Crystal introducing them, and retroactively off-model sprites >type variety
Diamond and Pearl , which if we're going with Gen 3 having two evil teams, it should be Platinum getting contrasted with Emerald >too many HMs
Defog is one section and optional & Flash is no longer a HM to compensate for Rock Climb >Hence the "faithful" remakes flopped critically because the foundation wasn't exactly interesting to begin with.
So then why are they easily the best selling remakes?
SOUL peaked at gen 2, even its remake had HEART and SOUL in their names. They are the Heart and Soul of this franchise and anything beyound it is irredeemable and their fans deluded.
This along with Cynthia's battle theme and Silver battle theme are my favorite songs in the franchise, if I had to choose one, it'd be hard but I'd go with Silver's theme.
>Even the secret bases were top tier comfy.
My nigga.
>your starter has evolved >you're past the midway point (you think) >you have all of your travel options available >the secret bases are starting to come together >the weather suddenly changes >there's very tall grass >the adventure is actually far from complete >the desire to press onward reignites
You say that but back then with limited internet and shit speed FINALLY learning how to get one, fishing hours for it then spending time learning about pokéblock shit, then spending weeks planting and watering the max beautu blocks then FINALLY getting milotic and then trading her and back to the bros at school was quite the adventure.
Don't know, as a brazilian, the only time I took my gba to school to show my friends my pokémon, some poor jealous homosexual from my class stole my gba, worst of all is that when I accused him of theft, I received a warning for racist behavior, my parents were called to school so the principal could tell them about my "unacceptable racism" and basically I was left without my gba because they decided to not go after it as punishment for bringing my toys to school.
Brazil is the country that, historically, imported the greatest amount of slaves out of all slave trading nations, you can imagine how much that fucked us up. If you think Western Europe has it bad with the "muh slavery" or "muh racism", then think again, because Brazil has it 1000x worse, and you can bet these homosexuals use this as an excuse to get away with murder, just like what happened to my GBA.
One of my favorite routes in the series. Even the secret bases were top tier comfy.
>from poor family >only got a bootleg version of saphire >internal battery for time never worked, even after replacing it
I missed out on all features that involved time with this game.
nta, but I had a poor man's copy of sapphire that was incapable of saving the game. only later did I get an original copy of emerald and could properly enjoy the game.
>bridge that goves over entire buildings despite only being one ledge high >random caves in a city for no reason

Was this that mega emerald nigga? I was briefly in his discord just to keep an eye on it but noped out the moment he posted No discrimination in the rules. Fucking fag comes to Ganker for advice and then makes his sekrit club into tumblr
>massive log bridge cutting through half the city >only a couple of ledges high but goes over taller buildings >no visible support whatsoever
Are you actually, unironically retarded?
>massive log bridge cutting through half the city >only a couple of ledges high but goes over taller buildings
Not only that, but ground level of one of those buildings is at the same elevation that the bridge begins at. And best of all, it's the very first building in front of the bridge, just to make it extra noticeable. It's like the designer deliberately put that one there just so that no one could make the excuse that 'maybe the bridge goes up and over the buildings', because that would be one steep-ass bridge.
This pick is a rollercoaster of emotions. On one hand, the elevation changes are really fucking cool and tastefully done, then there's a bigass 5 mile long wooden bridge running over the city.
>the whole point of Rustboro is that it's a city with paved roads to show how modernized it is to other city >inject random grass, bushes, sources of water, etc. into the city, breaking up the aesthetic and the pavement >buildings blocking off the bridge paths >the two buildings surrounded by lamposts in a dead-end >the Pokémon Center, the most important building in a city, is hidden behind a clusterfuck of level design
>mart is right as you go into the city >have to send in a navigation squad to find the Pokemon center >most of these places probably don't even have any worthwhile items or TMs and are mostly there for flavor >under water building >several buildings in general added just to make the area bigger and don't even have an entrance >random bike paths added in >random caves and tall grass >that section in the middle with several street lights sprinkled in randomly >a good chunk of areas aren't even accessible and probably can't be seen well in the player's line of sight
This whole image screams "Graphic design is my passion."
Comfy, looks like something I would draw in the back of my notebook when I bored and 9 years old
>bridge that goves over entire buildings despite only being one ledge high >random caves in a city for no reason

i was poor and then taken into foster care when i bought emerald as a kid
my foster parents were cheap so i had to get a paper route and save monies in order to buy it.
i had pokemon blue and a gba but no next gen pokemon games, unlike all my friends
i was so happy when i went to walmart and bought emerald at 9 years old, im 27 now
delivered a lot of papers in order to get this gem
life was shit but sometimes it was okay 🙂
Emerald hits because it has numerous biomes to explore. Forests, beaches, islands, deserts, volcanic mountains, underwater ruins, etc. Platinum hits in a similar way for me, but because of how modern Sinnoh is, I find Hoenn more appealing.
An underrated part of Emerald is how you can move around the entire overworld map without ever hitting a load screen. It made the different biomes feel real
To be fair, rustboro’s area is sectioned off by meteor falls to the north, whismur cave to the east, and petal burg forest to the south. Other than that though the entire rest of the region never has a buffer section. On the fucking GBA
They are legitimately well designed games, especially Emerald. The only thing I wish that gen 3 would've added from later generations is the physical/special split, otherwise I'd say it was the best gen in every regard
1) Your father as a gym leader close to the midway point gives you a realistic benchmark to aim for, rather than needing to focus solely on the E4.
2) Different environments, as previously mentioned.
3) New mechanics that feel natural without being overwhelming. People who like Pokemon but don't like fighting had a new way to play the game with pageants, and secret bases offered new ways to "compete" with friends.
4) Exploration. The game is huge, there's numerous secrets, and even when you think you've done it all, there's still Mirage Island, Feebas, the Regis, and trying to figure out how to get on the space ship to catch Deoxys.
5) Weather, even if it did cost us night/day.
6) Battle Frontier.
I've always hated how forgothen and unemotional the whole father thing is. I would have rather have a battle against him as the champion even if it was predictible
>secret bases offered new ways to "compete" with friends
And then one gen later they released their magnum opus that still hasn't been topped. >b-but raids
No.
>best starter design >best soundtrack >great mon roster >great challenging leaders >great human designs >great level curve >intro of QoL like the EXP share and EV reducing berries but nothing broken yet >best region design with flawless integration of biomes >best map design with a route that backtracks you in an organic manner and makes use of all locations >best secrets >simple and timeless spritework and framework that still gets used for rom hacks to this day >best legendary design >best postgame >fuck you second region is not a post game that is part of the main game >introduced weather >introduced abilities >contests >May
It’s the whole package dude. Gen 4 brought some more things to the table and 5 tried to maximize the gains but if they had been present in 3 it would be considered the best generation hands down.
level curve
Well the problem is that the game is too short, the E4 are levels 44-55ish >>best postgame >>fuck you second region is not a post game that is part of the main game
You know damn well that GSC Kanto shits all over the battle frontier
>GSC KANTOOOOOOO
Yeah, I sure do enjoy going back to a half baked region just to steamroll it because the game has no scaling. Gen 2 would've been better off cutting off Kanto to focus on Johtho instead.
>seething about Kanto
Still don't get this. Plus, I would have loved if RSE let you visit another region after beating the game (even if it was just an homage), but The Pokemon Company started to realize the games would sell on name alone...and here we are.
No seriously, it’s not a postgame. Kanto is the same as the darkrai story in PMD Explorers, it happens after the first credits roll but it’s not a postgame, it’s the second act of the main game. Post game is when you have no more content to unlock and need extra activities to do with your level 100 party. Frontier shits all over anything that happens after Red.
>The elite4 will be 15-20 levels higher than you
Good. The Elite 4 shouldn't be pushovers, and you can always grind rematches with the pokenav if you're a shitter who can't strategize
>simple and timeless spritework and framework that still gets used for rom hacks to this day
Rest of what you said was semi-agreeable, but Gen 3's spritework for the NPCs and Pokemon is fucking atrocious and the reasons it's used as the framework for hacks has nothing to do with the game's art style. It's all tool accessibility, emulation accessibility, and being able to reuse the plethora of recreated sprites for Pokemon from later generations.
>see torkoal for the first time >get excited thinking about how cool his evolution will be >it has no evolution nor pre evolution >watch the anime >it's actually fucking tiny
I still love the lil guy
>best starter design
wrong, 1 2 5 6 9 are better >best soundtrack
gba soundfont fucking ruins it and gen 2 and 4 are better >great mon roster
its ok, not the worst >great challenging leaders
all of them are pushovers like every pokemon game >great human designs
steven wally and flannery are the only good ones >great level curve
its about average with every pokemon game that isn't gen 2 so good job I guess >intro of QoL like the EXP share and EV reducing berries but nothing broken yet
exp share is gen 2 retard >best region design with flawless integration of biomes
sinnoh is better >best map design with a route that backtracks you in an organic manner and makes use of all locations
sure >best secrets
braille shit is fucking stupid, feebas tile is fucking stupid >simple and timeless spritework and framework that still gets used for rom hacks to this day
it only gets used for romhacks because the gba tools are easy to use the spritework in gen 3 is fucking terrible and gen 2 mogs the shit out of it >best legendary design
latis are good everything else is fucking ass compared to 2 or 4 >best postgame >fuck you second region is not a post game that is part of the main game
battle facilities are done better in other games >introduced weather
gen 2 >introduced abilities
true >contests
shit no one cares about and is broken with 1 move combo >May
Kris, Leaf, Dawn, Lyra, Hilda, Serena, Chicken all better than her
As a 90s kid, I will always prefer Gen2.
The sheer explosion of features we got form Gen1->2 is something the series never experienced again.
All things new in Gen2:
>breeding >berries >held items >2(!) new types, Steel and Dark >time of day affecting many things including pokemon spawns >day of the week affecting things including pokemon spawns >base customisation (yeah you could put only dolls into your room but this counts) >re-fighting trainers >an actual post game >animated sprites
I'm probably forgetting things but just imagine being 8yo having only played blue/yellow before and then being hit with this vast amount of new features. I did enjoy gen3 but the wonder is all in Gen2. Perfect timing.
Berry planting was my favorite, you could even plant and water in all four directions vs. D/P/Pt only allowing you to water from the front. You could even have berries plant themselves if you left an adjacent spot empty. Small stuff like that made Gen 3 awesome. Dive was underutilized too but man if it wasn't fun.
>You could even have berries plant themselves if you left an adjacent spot empty.
i think i learnt that by accident and forgot it as soon as i planted the next berry
the only thing I planted were cheri berries because paralysis was my most hated status ever, I had tons of cheri berry trees all over the region and most of those I wouldn't even visit later to check on, besides, I'd never really end up using all those cheri berries anyway but my autism dictated I planted more and more. Damn I was a fucking retard.
I know that feeling, I had hundreds of berries in Pearl that I only used occasionally, but it beats having to spend money on antidotes or walking back to a center every time one of my guys had an ailment.
Gen 3 is absolute trash and you only think it's good because you were a child when it came out and weren't old enough during Pokemania. Gen 3 killed all hype for Pokemon back in the day. It still sucks.
They're still going to this day because brand loyalists like eating shit. Gen 3 was good fun, but a 7/10 compared to Gen 2 being a 9/10. The fact that you had to buy a Gamecube game and then remakes (of the two games that actually are the reason the series is still successful) just to catch em all this time made it worse, besides no more day-night system and time-based events.
>you only think it's good because you were a child when it came out
Yeah, that's exactly the problem with oldfags who glorify the first two gens because of pokémania
Hoenn is still played by young people today, as it's often someone's first game that they emulated, since it easily runs on anything and has the quality that make it more desirable to eulate over the previous gens
>soulless, bright colored pixel art >removal of night cycle >1 region instead of 2 >"quality"
>Colours are ugly
Sour grapes >1 region instead of 2
Quality over quantity. Kanto was a mistake >no day/night cycle
Muh dark overlay is not a game defining feature, imagine reaching this hard

Listen, gen 3 is great for kids under 10. It's the perfect game for elementary school students. No mystery, no difficult rock tunnel to get filtered by just bright colors and quality of life improvements.

I’ve never understood this, any time there is an artstyle shift in a major series people will treat it like the developers killed their parents.

>Crystal is fucking trash by the way, and have a nice day
I was a child when Blue came out and i think Gen 3 is best. 3 is cool because it had a bunch of different biomes so it felt like a real adventure. The back half with all the water is weak though
Nah, shit opinion. Gen 3 is what kept me interested in pokemon. I was about 9-10 during RBY, loved it, totally caught up in pokemania. GS come out when I'm in sixth grade and I like them even more than gen 1. Start to get burned out when the Johto anime has endless filler, lose interest in the TCG around Neo Destiny, then enter high school and figure while I had a lot of fun with pokemon the fad has passed for me. I hear about Ruby & Sapphire and look it up out of curiosity and the pokemon look gay and the fire type is a fucking digimon. Not really interested. But then my cousin who's like a little brother to me comes over with Sapphire, and I watch him play it and damn, it looks really fun. Then my best friend brings his copy of Sapphire to school, and damn, it looks really fun. I bite the bullet and get Ruby and have a fantastic time. Tons of fun new type combos, pokemon learning interesting moves, awesome soundtrack. Gen 3 is the (second) best.
>played through Emerald in 2019, up until the underwater city I think >haven't touched it since then >hadn't played a pokemon game since Platinum in HS 2007ish
Call me names or pat my head or something.
>pokemon thread turns into a whodunnit of which game “killed the series forever!!!!” >the answer is never gen 6 or onward but always always one of the games between gen 2 and 6 which were all fondly remembered before mentally ill freaks started to become dedicated haters of one particular older title or another for no reason at all
It would be less concerning if this were something that only happened within the Pokemon fanbase but I’m starting to notice the trend in any series with a fuckton of entries
Everyone in my school loved gen 5,
. it was basically the closest gen Z would get to their own pokemania
Now that second half of my statement isn’t true, but literally anyone can take their anecdotal subjective experience and try to pass it off as a universal. This kind of shit has killed pokemon discussion, it started with the Crystal obsessives claiming Gen 3 killed pokemania because people were starting to grow out of pokemon and now everyone has their own version of that story for a particular title
People don’t even like the fucking games anymore here, they just choose one to hate
Well your entire argument relies upon a personal anecdote so it would make sense that I would reply with my anecdote that the sky is in fact blue, not green
>it was basically the closest gen Z would get to their own pokemania
Not him but that's a first. I'm 25 and Pokemon for me was practically taboo from childhood up until around Go. Kids were indoctrinated (or should I say inCODrinated) by your generic western shooters at the time so you still had that stigma of "Pokemon's gay/for babies/dead" for years. Most people I knew at the time who were into Pokemon were autists either in their teens or 20s.
It's because the Johtomons were designed to be an expansion to Kanto. It's the reason why so many of them are cross evolutions. It was a way to promote the new breeding mechanics while many of them were simply harder to get. I mean shit like Houndour not even being available until Kanto, despite being a Johtomon.
yeah. Gen2 mon are more like gen1.5 and that's how they designed the game too. I don't think GF really treated Gen2 as a Gen standing on its own legs and only noticed with Gen3 how fucking strong the franchise really is.
I've been aching to play some rom hacks. What are some good rom hacks? I'm using Unbound as a baseline here with all the mons and QoL changes, original story might not needed.
I'm of the opinion Inclement Emerald is superior to Radical Red
I played IE to the Elite 4
Radical Red I tried it and dropped it after it after it shoved like 4-5 random mandatory battles I wasn't prepared for and lost, in the span of like 10 minutes. Also it seems to run worse and has questionable design choices like putting the regional variants in the starting area. Really off-putting, shit designs I don't wanna see so early.
IE resources are also sooooo well-designed compared to Radical Red. They give it to you in one folder if you need to find out what you want or what's changed.
AI challenge is down to move sets and team comp. It’s hard to get more difficult than an enemy that predicts your moves and switches because it reads them, but that’s what Leaders and Elite Four members get to have. They simply feel easy due to lack of tools in their team compositions.
>Standing at the edge, overlooking the ocean >You know the journey's almost over >There's just one last push before the final challenge >So what do you say? >Finish it how you and your friends started it: >Together
why do people not fucking understand the theming of this?
you're at the end of your journey
there's absolutely nothing standing between you and the pokemon league
making it a 'city' would mean filling it with bullshit houses and stuff to distract you before the actual pokemon league
calling it a city and then not even putting a single building shows just how laser-focused the trainer is on becoming the champion after everything they've been through up to this point
A lot of gen 2 pokemon feel like gen 3 pokemon because of gen 2's horrible dex distribution over the game. Skarmory is another pokemon that's far easier to find in gen 3
I thought Skarmory was a Gen 3 Pokémon despite playing and completing Gold well before playing Gen 3. I had never seen it in Gen 2 and I could also NEVER capture it in Gen 3 despite trying my hardest.
Tried out the remake not too long ago, it's nice how buffed Mightyena got after the splits. And the new moves are great. Stands shoulder to shoulder with the Zigzagoon I always get.
Yeah and no. It’s more that it came along and decided to fuck around with their relationship and reset it a bit so that we could have drama. Instead of them working together all the way through as would be the logical conclusion from the ending of RSE, they argued, went their seperate ways and did things independently of eachother because muh pride and it was just painful to watch. They work it out in the end but man did it suck to watch them retread old ground.
for me they brought back Maxie and Archie despite implying they died, and I know about DP distortion world linking the event but still bullshit at least we got Zinnia
Adventures during gen 3 was pretty wild. RS ending with a deus ex machina was a bit lame, but connecting all the past storylines with the FRLG and Emerald arcs was the coolest shit, or so I felt back in the day. In the end all the setup for Sird and Team Galactic for the DP arc didn't really amount to all that much despite appearances during the gen 3 arcs, which was very disappointing. And then Adventures basically entered the dark ages with gen 5 and beyond when deviating from the source material became increasingly difficult for the writer and the games came out at such a rate that they just couldn't keep up (with B2W2 suffering the worst of it).
Gen 3 has some of the coolest routes and towns in the series, but somehow people are nostalgic over the most boring part of the game
More power to them I guess
I still love everything up until that point. I just don't want to go through the ocean. Fun's over, time to swim. Nothing but tentacools and pelipers for the rest of the game.
i'm 33, and never actually finished ruby/sapphire/emerald before last night. always lost interest around when the legendaries start fighting. never realized how close i was to the elite 4 before that. finally powered through and... i dunno it feels fucking empty compared to gen 2 and 1. maybe it's because i waited to so long i don't have any nostalgia for the end game? do i have to go out of my way to go fight STAYVUN to get proper closure? it felt like a cake walk running through the elite 4, you don't get to fight may at the end even though she shows up, wally was a homosexual on victory road who i easily curbstomped plus he never actually felt like a rival at all, just some weak fag who was riding my coat tails. i dunno shit felt kinda unsatisfying. can i say that i'm done here or should i go do some more shit? not interested in battle frontier or IV/EV autism.
To be fair all pokemon games are fairly easy. The battle frontier is a very famous and beloved part of emerald theres a reason the ORAS not getting even the fuckin battle tower was such an insult. But uh ya if you dont care about the post game then no theres not much to do after you beat the game. Do the contests and complete the dex I guess.
i'll prolly just emulate gen 4 next and speed through it. i never gave any of these games a chance when i was younger having had my fill with pokemania. now that i can frameskip most of these games fairly easily i can mash a even fucking faster to get to the good parts if there are any.
i'm not, not entirely. i really enjoyed scarlet and violet, it's actually what got me interested in playing through all of them and giving them their fair chance. i do genuinely think nostalgia plays a big role in how i feel about the games in general though. gen 1 and 2 hold big significant places in my childhood, and the first 10 hours of ruby and sapphire do too. i just never really got a chance to play it in full when i was a broke ass kid.
My first game was gold and my favorite game was ultra sun. Though I feel like im the only person on earth that actually really liked ultra sun and moon.
If ultra sun and moon had been one game instead of two and the first game of gen 7, it would probably be held up as one of the better generations in the series. But they aren’t. They are lazy cashgrabs pure and simple.
I honestly cant belive we still have 2 games. Red and blue version was a gimmicky cash grab when they did it back in the day. Now they are still doing it. Fuckin hell.
The only Pokémon game where you have both parents. Also thought the idea of fighting them as a gym leader was pretty awesome.
Back before sword and shield were officially announced I imagined a PokeBritain game too which involved your character’s mom being the present champion you’d fight at the end which would then become a doubles battle when the queen joins in.
Fav pokemon ever, caught his first form cause it was so cute, became a badass iron dinosour later. This is how evolutuons should be, not become a gay furry dancer at stage 3
Emerald will always have a special place in my heart
My parent bought me a GBA and this game for Christmas back when it launched, it was my first Pokemon game, up to that point I had only watched the anime for 2 years, and had some playing cards
I can still remember the sheer hype and excitement I felt when the professor gave me my Treecko and engaged in my first battles, I felt like Ash in the anime, such a cool feeling
The only Pokemon games I played and finished after that were Platinum and Heartgold when they released
I emulated Emerald a few months ago, and even replayed Heartgold on my DS last year, had fun
Then not too long ago I got a Switch, figured I would try Pokemon Violet despite the backlash
Funnily enough I’m having loads of fun, kinda makes me feel like I first discovered Emerald, with the added benefit of being 3D (I must have daydreamed every single day about a 3D Pokemon game back when Inwas a kid)
Honestly now I couldn’t go back to older entries now, there are a lot of inconveniences, abysmal QOL, Battle Frontier is too autistic if you wanna complete it, and unless you are cheating, ain’t no way to complete the pokedex fully
Just finished reading your blog.
I'm tempted to get violet/scarlet, I find it neat that it's still possible to transfer pokémon there from pokébank even tho the whole termination of online stuff for the 3ds, I have some stuff that I carry with me ever since my gba days resting in my pokémon moon cartridge and it'd be nice to move that to a more recent entry. Did you get the dlc as well, or just base game?
I was born in 95, so Gen 3 was the first one where I knew what was what and got it at release. Even had my grandad bring back emerald from usa before it was out over here. I like it, that being said the downfall is clearly here. So many concept designs and cool designs, absol, the weather pokemon, trophius etc.
I keep wanting for enjoy gens 4 and 5 but theyre full of minor annoyances like inconsistent name capitalization, shiny locks, weird form incompatibilities and other bullshit.
>physical/special split is the most impactful gameplay change in the history of the series >but I can't enjoy it because... inconsistent name capitalization

aww that’s cute
He's probably just mad about Leaf Blade no longer being special. Tbf, it got buffed from gen 4 onwards from 70 to 90 power, but grass special moves like Energy Ball, Solar Beam or Leaf Storm are usually far more desirable
Phys spec split was a great addition, but it retroactively FUCKED certain mons. For instance, Treeko’s line went from being an incredibly powerful fast special attacking grass type into being filled with physical moves in its set but holding the special attack bias. On the other hand, mons like Absol got to make proper use of their stab for the first time ever. Phys spec split was great but it had knock on effects that GF never bothered to solve through rebalance or otherwise.
The best gen3 rom hacks are those that do QoL, whether it be phys/special split, updated base stats, updated move power or pp, giving bosses full teams and the like
Adding gen 4 or later moves should only be if you do the damage split, and not go overboard (like having dark pulse be a counterpart for crunch or psychic with psycho cut or zen headbutt), but personally i don’t like when later pokemon get added
gameplaywise XD makes lots of improvements in terms of QoL and added pokemon but i still prefer Colosseum for the setting, art direction, characters. I just wish these games werent a slog to play because of how slow they are
Absolutely mouthbreathing retard take.
You look like one those "both sideist" fags when it comes to politics or war, those that don't take sides and just fence sit pretending things are "complicated". You either pick a side or fuck off homosexual, there's no "Ohhh if you like pokémon you're my friend teehee" here.
>this is the comfy Ganker thread.
That shouldn't be an excuse for "I like pokémon in general" homosexualry, either pick a side and argue in favor of it to contribute to discussion or fuck off.
I'm not currently playing any of the pokémon games, but my last team was >Dusclops >Whiscash >Medicham >Electabuzz >Abomasnow >Magmar
in pokémon platinum.
meganium is really cute and my gf (male) picked it and chooses all the names. we almost wiped to whitney's miltank because it's so fucking tanky and it got paralyzed by static before i could poison it
Just play Emerald. Ruby and Sapphire got hit harder by the third version obsoletion bat than any other games in the series, there's no point in playing them over Emerald.
>used to be a big big hoenn guy >want to replay it >bored out of my fucking mind >play any pokemon >bored out of my fucking mind >play romhacks >not bored for a few hours then bored out of my fucking mind
I can't go home.
I normally play on my unmodded (I hate having to specify that) GBA fat but fuck trying to take a good picture of that screen when I can hook my gamecube up into a capture card instead
>only uses Platinum's caves for no reason
Please stick to shilling XY, you always go full retard when shilling Emerald, I'd go as far as to say you only do it to falseflag.
Some regions have such shit new Pokemon or such shit distribution it's difficult to do without picking up old favorites along the way.
In fact, I would say the majority of regions suffer from this problem.
Whats a good gen 3 romhack that just has gen 1-3 mons in it? I don't like when they try to cram 8+ gens of stuff into one singular region, it always feels out of place.
Hoenn is the best designed region by a long shot and I'm tired of people not seeing it.
From walking through a valley of fertile volcanic ash, to a peaceful floating town amidst raging currents, the entire game faces back to it's core theme of the uneven relationship of man and nature. Places, characters, plot, pokemon, it all helps strengthen the overarching theme of the entire game and environmentalist questions.
Nothing ever feels like an afterthought or something that isn't contributing to what the game stands for.
It's so insane because it's also the only game that even tried to do something like this. The rest of the games feel theme-less in comparison.
I hate the people that complained about "too much water", because GF took it to heart. In the first three gens I loved getting lost in the water routes, stumbling onto Seafoam Islands, trying to navigate the Whirl Isles, and exploring all of the dive spots that took you to some out of the way dead end, it was all so comfy. But now, ever since gen iv, all we get is a designated water corridor to justify the surf hm, if at all. The Cobalt Costlands were comfy as fuck in Arceus because it was a similar feeling
as much as I don't share your enthusiasm for water areas, I don't dislike them, and I agree that the "too much water" complaints were unwarranted, kinda sucks that we don't have them anymore even tho I wasn't passionate about them.
To me these threads prove kids will eat up ANYTHING and nostalgia will make them think it was good
If you liked Pokemon games as a kid and are nostalgic for them then you have no business condemning kids for enjoying Fortnite or CoD as the franchises they'll feel nostalgic for in 10-15 years
I hate Gen 3, but this is the best first town theme out of all the games. Shit is fucking amazing.
>I hate Gen 3
You could have just started your post by saying you're retarded and had the same effect.
>but this is the best first town theme out of all the games

bros when was the exact moment that all the soul left this franchise?
i'm gonna say gen 5.
posting this banger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUodEXn0dBM
It wasn't BW, but BW2 that made me realize the Pokemon I knew was gone. Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum were all versions I looked forward to that fixed many issues with the prior releases, while still being dependent on the earlier ones to have 100% completion. Seeing BW2 instead of a proper third title to cap off BW was all I needed to know that the franchise was gone.
?si=PDxBDxpvQqy5880p
Anon, you do realise you're replying to a painfully obvious troll, yeah? If you stop to think about what that anon is saying, he wanted the developers to release the previous game a second time with minor fixes rather than what happened with B2W2, which is to say an expanded sequel game using much of the same assets but with a bunch of extra on top. So either a non-self-aware retard or a troll.
>they went into soul overdrive in that game
naggers and amerimutts aren't soul, homosexual. shitnova is the beginning of the end if anything
Counterpoint, SM was comfy as fuck and had one of the best post gen 3 regional rosters
I will say that the new mon quality was overall higher than BW and XY dex, but the regional variants were 90% shit and get even more points docked for being kanto pandering. Goliscopod brings it way the fuck up for being the coolest bug type we’ve had EVER.
Alolan Golem is the greatest pokemon ever
OK Achmed whatever you say
>$60

You are correct, I forgot. I payed for the dual pack both times so I could have one and give the other to my brother so I was very upset when USUM happened. Especially since I had been avoiding any info due to potential spoilers at the time, the story in SM was one of the few things it did alright.
The soulless pokemon animations in x&y were the sign, but we all assumed they'd improve in future games and we gave them the benefit of the doubt as they'd just had to do hundreds of 3d pokemon animations at once.
how wrong we were.
>Gladion
Man, I hate how they handled him
>plastered all over promotional material about how he's Team Skull's "Enforcer"
>you finally meet him in the game and the "Enforcer" is being called a loser and made fun of by lowly Team Skull grunts who suddenly appear after you beat him
Does Gladion even end up doing anything for Team Skull? I don't remember, he's just kind of there and any story related bit to him just goes nowhere became gamefreak blew their load the moment he showed up
Gen 5 was extremely soulful, just before the change to full 3D and exploration shit the bed
Masuda was also making literal Hoenn callbacks everywhere and putting trumpets in route themes
Actually it’s Gen 6 when the soul left
?si=TKqXA0KahyARtX2s
>gen 6 is when the soul left
>proceeds to post the most soulless song in the series
huh
you can tell that soul left at gen 3 actually. gen3chu looks sterilized and homogenized af, no spark. also meleekachu is best 3D pikachu
Good taste
Low HP music was a mistake.
>fighting boss trainer
>listening to their music
>they get a crit on your Pokemon
>have to waste time healing back up to hear the song you want
They should've made it a remix of the battle song you were listening too instead of that shit, it was really annoying.
Music changing for low HP isn't a bad idea but it should've been like one of those layered track tricks instead of changing to a whole different song
>unovafag tries to shift the blame on gen 6 even though it put in more effort than gen 5
a tale as old as time
Wasting more time and money to get a worse overall product is a classic hallmark of bad game design
>it's worse because uhhhhh I said so
It's worse because it looks like absolute dogshit in comparison, anon
And that's just the visuals which were the relevant part to this discussion
have a nice day, you disingenuous sped
>the pokemon having actual animations instead of lazily tweened puppet garbage looks like dogshit because uhhhhh I said so
>actual animations
lmao
Having actual animations is a drawback when the game has to play that animation constantly and it doesn't fit
We were stuck with all flying types having a permanent flying animation even when that didn't make sense for the pokemon for multiple fucking generations because they developed them around the shitty sky battle gimmick and were too lazy to make new ones later, you dumb nagger
>flying types flying is bad because uhhhh I said so
>actual animations
Correct.
have a nice day
>kalosperm thinks xatu, skarmory, tropius and swellow look remotely passable
>Starters signature moves animations have actual effort put into them
Classic, also funny when that animation gets worse the very next game when they're not the main starters anymore
>one of the 10% that look decent
Yeah, nice cherrypicking. Why don't you compare it to the colosseum model? Or better yet, use one of the 90% models that look like shit, like Meowth for instance. But I bet you won't, you filthy kalosperm
For me it was Gen 6. Ever since then just when I think it couldn't get worse Gamefreak finds a way.
I still love pokemon, but I would say gen8. I hate gen6, but gen7 was still a great game. While gen9 has a great story out of all the 3d titles, alola has great characters and charme (it is underused as hell).
First game blue, childhood game ruby, but game I love to play bw.
I'd say gen6, SM/USUM was a comfy beach episode, but then SwSh came out and oh god what in the-
DP (gen 4; Sinnoh) is when the franchise became the same uninspired shit over and over: 8 gyms, elite 4, champion, 1 evil team using [Box art legendary here] to take over the world!
Two teams but they somehow felt even more similar than Galactic grunts and admins did with one another.
>visuals
but enough about Gen 3 with the awful overworld NPC sprites, the lack of animated sprites until Emerald despite Crystal introducing them, and retroactively off-model sprites
>type variety
Diamond and Pearl , which if we're going with Gen 3 having two evil teams, it should be Platinum getting contrasted with Emerald
>too many HMs
Defog is one section and optional & Flash is no longer a HM to compensate for Rock Climb
>Hence the "faithful" remakes flopped critically because the foundation wasn't exactly interesting to begin with.
So then why are they easily the best selling remakes?
I honestly enjoyed Sinnoh a lot, I have a hard time if I were to choose between gen 3 and gen 4, but to each their own.
Soul peaked at emerald. anyone who defends gen 4 and on is delusional. its absolutely garbage. i couldnt even finish pearl it was so boring.
SOUL peaked at gen 2, even its remake had HEART and SOUL in their names. They are the Heart and Soul of this franchise and anything beyound it is irredeemable and their fans deluded.
Masuda interview following ORAS giving their justifications for foregoing challenging in game content and ignoring the expectations of players.
Anyone who kept buying Pokemon games after that is a part of what ruined this series.

Metagross just didn't have the same impact
Absolutely. Theme is so good that none of its version are bad. Except Pokémon Masters', that one was awful.
The ORAS version is shameful, it doesn't even have the clapping.
It also has the best champion and theme. Cynthiafags need not apply

Cynthia isn't even a compelling champion. The only thing interesting about her is the piano intro and her being a pokécoomer wet dream.
This along with Cynthia's battle theme and Silver battle theme are my favorite songs in the franchise, if I had to choose one, it'd be hard but I'd go with Silver's theme.
May uoh

Gen 3 still upsets me with this one.
One of my favorite routes in the series. Even the secret bases were top tier comfy.

Fuck you Feebas
the Feebas shit really was just a cruel fucking joke
How do you evolve Feebas again? It’s been forever since I played my home region Hoenn
Level up with max beauty from blue pokeblocks
And what berry makes blue Pokéblocks again?
Dry berries like Wiki, Kelpsy, Hondew, and Cornn.
Pamtre gets the best results, but it's considerably rarer.
I wouldn't have imagined racism would hold any fucking weight in Brazil of all places.
You did find your feebas tile right?
I caught like six of those when I finally found them.
>had to wait for a sale to get rare furniture
I hated this as a kid
Bro? Your gameshark?
>from poor family
>only got a bootleg version of saphire
>internal battery for time never worked, even after replacing it
I missed out on all features that involved time with this game.
>I missed out on all features that involved time with this game.
Don't worry they were all shit most people wouldn't find anyways
nta, but I had a poor man's copy of sapphire that was incapable of saving the game. only later did I get an original copy of emerald and could properly enjoy the game.
>secret base spots that need Surf, Waterfall, and an Acro Bike to get to
Did anyone actually use those?
If it aint secret it aint shit. I always used that one
There’s four spots up there. My friends and I made a little secret neighbourhood up there, it was cozy af.
>route actually feels like a grand adventure

I always make a secret base in the top right bush it’s giant
forgot about the secret bases, those were so cozy
Im building a new GBA for my Emerald cart.

80 bucks is nothing these days.
Why not just do it on your phone

"No."
why the fuck would i do that if i can vc inject games on my 3ds that can play them more perfect then your alexpress pocket brick

>no visible support whatsoever
Are you actually, unironically retarded?
>massive log bridge cutting through half the city
>only a couple of ledges high but goes over taller buildings
Not only that, but ground level of one of those buildings is at the same elevation that the bridge begins at. And best of all, it's the very first building in front of the bridge, just to make it extra noticeable. It's like the designer deliberately put that one there just so that no one could make the excuse that 'maybe the bridge goes up and over the buildings', because that would be one steep-ass bridge.
this is the dumbest expansion to a city i have ever seen
assuming the center doubles as a mart, perfect
This pick is a rollercoaster of emotions. On one hand, the elevation changes are really fucking cool and tastefully done, then there's a bigass 5 mile long wooden bridge running over the city.
I refuse to believe whoever makes these actually believes they're improvements
It's an absolute masterclass of overdesign that it must be a parody
>the whole point of Rustboro is that it's a city with paved roads to show how modernized it is to other city
>inject random grass, bushes, sources of water, etc. into the city, breaking up the aesthetic and the pavement
>buildings blocking off the bridge paths
>the two buildings surrounded by lamposts in a dead-end
>the Pokémon Center, the most important building in a city, is hidden behind a clusterfuck of level design
Everything about this picture is terrible.
The biggest crime was putting the pokecenter and the pokemart so fucking far away from each other.
you will buy the potions

>random bike paths added in
>random caves and tall grass
>that section in the middle with several street lights sprinkled in randomly
>a good chunk of areas aren't even accessible and probably can't be seen well in the player's line of sight
This whole image screams "Graphic design is my passion."
As retarded as this is, I won’t lie I think I would have a blast exploring it.
Comfy, looks like something I would draw in the back of my notebook when I bored and 9 years old
>random caves in a city

Thats just glitch city if he gen 3
Hoenn sucked. HM bloat and too much water.
I almost threw a non-existent GBA at the wall. I blocked out this song for a reason. Fuck Flygon, fuck Sandstorm, and fuck YOU for posting this.
i was poor and then taken into foster care when i bought emerald as a kid
my foster parents were cheap so i had to get a paper route and save monies in order to buy it.
i had pokemon blue and a gba but no next gen pokemon games, unlike all my friends
i was so happy when i went to walmart and bought emerald at 9 years old, im 27 now

Chewie.... We're home
The last great region before the series went to hell.
I don't think it's nostalgia either, even today when I replay it there's something that subsequent games were never quite able to replicate.
Its a shame gen3 doesnt have dynamic weather and a real day/night cycle. That would make them peefect.
Backtracking is rewarding. They are also some of the only Pokemon games that are 60fps.
>remakeslop art
Why does this look like AI? (It's too early to actually be)

horrendous
i'm also suddenly very thirsty
Bros why is gen3 so fucking good?
Wasn't Deoxys an event-only?
I've always hated how forgothen and unemotional the whole father thing is. I would have rather have a battle against him as the champion even if it was predictible
Pic related speaks volumes of why Gen 3 was great
Still the most kino legendary trio before they all just became overdesigned shit or dragon type shilling
>Still the most kino legendary trio
He didn't post a screenshot of the Beasts though?
>secret bases offered new ways to "compete" with friends
And then one gen later they released their magnum opus that still hasn't been topped.
>b-but raids
No.
>best starter design
>best soundtrack
>great mon roster
>great challenging leaders
>great human designs
>great level curve
>intro of QoL like the EXP share and EV reducing berries but nothing broken yet
>best region design with flawless integration of biomes
>best map design with a route that backtracks you in an organic manner and makes use of all locations
>best secrets
>simple and timeless spritework and framework that still gets used for rom hacks to this day
>best legendary design
>best postgame
>fuck you second region is not a post game that is part of the main game
>introduced weather

It’s the whole package dude. Gen 4 brought some more things to the table and 5 tried to maximize the gains but if they had been present in 3 it would be considered the best generation hands down.
level curve
Well the problem is that the game is too short, the E4 are levels 44-55ish
>>best postgame
>>fuck you second region is not a post game that is part of the main game
You know damn well that GSC Kanto shits all over the battle frontier
>GSC KANTOOOOOOO
Yeah, I sure do enjoy going back to a half baked region just to steamroll it because the game has no scaling. Gen 2 would've been better off cutting off Kanto to focus on Johtho instead.
>seething about Kanto
Still don't get this. Plus, I would have loved if RSE let you visit another region after beating the game (even if it was just an homage), but The Pokemon Company started to realize the games would sell on name alone...and here we are.
>You know damn well that GSC Kanto shits all over the battle frontier
Its not even as good as RBY kanto dude.
No seriously, it’s not a postgame. Kanto is the same as the darkrai story in PMD Explorers, it happens after the first credits roll but it’s not a postgame, it’s the second act of the main game. Post game is when you have no more content to unlock and need extra activities to do with your level 100 party. Frontier shits all over anything that happens after Red.
>your level 100 party
Emerald ends at like level 50
>great level curve
You’ve been playing too many romhacks. It’s garbage in vanilla. The elite4 will be 15-20 levels higher than you
>The elite4 will be 15-20 levels higher than you
Good. The Elite 4 shouldn't be pushovers, and you can always grind rematches with the pokenav if you're a shitter who can't strategize
Exp share was in gen 2 for giving red scale to Mr Pokemon
>simple and timeless spritework and framework that still gets used for rom hacks to this day
Rest of what you said was semi-agreeable, but Gen 3's spritework for the NPCs and Pokemon is fucking atrocious and the reasons it's used as the framework for hacks has nothing to do with the game's art style. It's all tool accessibility, emulation accessibility, and being able to reuse the plethora of recreated sprites for Pokemon from later generations.
>Introduced weather
Gen 3 is still good but the GOAT gen, 2, is where we get weather.
>great mon roster
Not if you’re a Fire Type fan, there was only blaziken if you chose it, camerupt, torkoal, magcargo and ninetails,
Why couldn’t they include houndoom or magmar or even arcanine?
>see torkoal for the first time
>get excited thinking about how cool his evolution will be
>it has no evolution nor pre evolution
>watch the anime
>it's actually fucking tiny
I still love the lil guy
>best starter design
wrong, 1 2 5 6 9 are better
>best soundtrack
gba soundfont fucking ruins it and gen 2 and 4 are better
>great mon roster
its ok, not the worst
>great challenging leaders
all of them are pushovers like every pokemon game
>great human designs
steven wally and flannery are the only good ones
>great level curve
its about average with every pokemon game that isn't gen 2 so good job I guess
>intro of QoL like the EXP share and EV reducing berries but nothing broken yet
exp share is gen 2 retard
>best region design with flawless integration of biomes
sinnoh is better
>best map design with a route that backtracks you in an organic manner and makes use of all locations
sure
>best secrets
braille shit is fucking stupid, feebas tile is fucking stupid
>simple and timeless spritework and framework that still gets used for rom hacks to this day
it only gets used for romhacks because the gba tools are easy to use the spritework in gen 3 is fucking terrible and gen 2 mogs the shit out of it
>best legendary design
latis are good everything else is fucking ass compared to 2 or 4
>best postgame
>fuck you second region is not a post game that is part of the main game
battle facilities are done better in other games
>introduced weather
gen 2
>introduced abilities
true
>contests
shit no one cares about and is broken with 1 move combo
>May
Kris, Leaf, Dawn, Lyra, Hilda, Serena, Chicken all better than her
>5 6 9 are better
stopped reading there. muttnova has the shittiest starter designs in the series. fucking ugly fat nagger pig jobmon dogshit
>zoomer buzzwords
fuck off back to /vp/ child
As a 90s kid, I will always prefer Gen2.
The sheer explosion of features we got form Gen1->2 is something the series never experienced again.
All things new in Gen2:
>breeding
>berries
>held items
>2(!) new types, Steel and Dark
>time of day affecting many things including pokemon spawns
>day of the week affecting things including pokemon spawns
>base customisation (yeah you could put only dolls into your room but this counts)
>re-fighting trainers
>an actual post game
>animated sprites
I never got to mirage island. I think having secrets is cool but man i wish the japs werent so autistic about hidden values.
Gen 3 is absolute trash and you only think it's good because you were a child when it came out and weren't old enough during Pokemania. Gen 3 killed all hype for Pokemon back in the day. It still sucks.
>it killed all the hype for Pokémon!
Just because you boomers got too old to play it doesn’t mean it wasn’t popular anymore
it was significantly less popular
Sure bro that’s why it’s still going to this day
They're still going to this day because brand loyalists like eating shit. Gen 3 was good fun, but a 7/10 compared to Gen 2 being a 9/10. The fact that you had to buy a Gamecube game and then remakes (of the two games that actually are the reason the series is still successful) just to catch em all this time made it worse, besides no more day-night system and time-based events.
>you only think it's good because you were a child when it came out
Yeah, that's exactly the problem with oldfags who glorify the first two gens because of pokémania
>implying hoennfags aren't old af
Nigga, it ain't 2013 anymore.
>tfw now considered old
But on a serious note I do need to drop this fucking website before I turn 30
I left for a year... then the fauci ouchies and lockdowns and boredom came and I came crawling back
Don't forget you're here forever.
Bro I've been on this shithole since '05 and am now in my 30s, you're not leaving here alive.
lmao good luck, i'm about to hit 31 and have tried multiple times to leave
KEK no way fag, buckle up and get comfy
>t. been here since 17 years old, am now about to be 34 in a few months
Where do you go once you leave?
Hoenn is still played by young people today, as it's often someone's first game that they emulated, since it easily runs on anything and has the quality that make it more desirable to eulate over the previous gens
>has the quality
Do you mean the preschool color palette and no day/night cycle?
>Colours are ugly
Sour grapes
>1 region instead of 2
Quality over quantity. Kanto was a mistake
>no day/night cycle
Muh dark overlay is not a game defining feature, imagine reaching this hard
Listen, gen 3 is great for kids under 10. It's the perfect game for elementary school students. No mystery, no difficult rock tunnel to get filtered by just bright colors and quality of life improvements.
>No mystery
Nigga it was literally the gem that had secrets and shit
soulless.
>soulless, bright colored pixel art
>removal of night cycle
>1 region instead of 2
>"quality"
>bright colored pixel art is inherently soulless
I’ve never understood this, any time there is an artstyle shift in a major series people will treat it like the developers killed their parents.
Crystal is fucking trash by the way, and have a nice day
>Crystal is fucking trash by the way, and have a nice day
He's resorting to name calling now. kek
I was a child for gens 1 and 2, and 3 was and is better
>3 killed all the hype
Hell no, it was dead by the time Crystal came out.
Gen 3 is the (second) best.
>played through Emerald in 2019, up until the underwater city I think
>haven't touched it since then
>hadn't played a pokemon game since Platinum in HS 2007ish
Call me names or pat my head or something.
I want to Littleroot May's Town.
>pokemon thread turns into a whodunnit of which game “killed the series forever!!!!”
>the answer is never gen 6 or onward but always always one of the games between gen 2 and 6 which were all fondly remembered before mentally ill freaks started to become dedicated haters of one particular older title or another for no reason at all
It would be less concerning if this were something that only happened within the Pokemon fanbase but I’m starting to notice the trend in any series with a fuckton of entries
Gen 5 made me drop Pokemon, it was bad
Everyone in my school loved gen 5,
. it was basically the closest gen Z would get to their own pokemania
Now that second half of my statement isn’t true, but literally anyone can take their anecdotal subjective experience and try to pass it off as a universal. This kind of shit has killed pokemon discussion, it started with the Crystal obsessives claiming Gen 3 killed pokemania because people were starting to grow out of pokemon and now everyone has their own version of that story for a particular title
People don’t even like the fucking games anymore here, they just choose one to hate
...I am Gen Z and that wasn't at all how it was at my school
And everyone (who played video games) in my school did. You have nothing but anecdotes, so why should I refute you with anything but anecdotes?
Um Gen2 bros?
too busy playing Polished
Shit like morty not having a mistrivous or falkner not having a hoothoot are still some of the dumbest choices ever.
Even the devs knew how shit most of the gen2 Pokémon were
It's because the Johtomons were designed to be an expansion to Kanto.
I don't think GF really treated Gen2 as a Gen standing on its own legs and only noticed with Gen3 how fucking strong the franchise really is.
>hoothoot
Bad example as it was used frequently in the accompanying dungeon. Natu is a much better choice even if Xatu is also Will's ace.
Yeah half the gym leaders are awful, or have awful movesets that make no sense.
HG/SS never did it for me either, wish the original game wasn't so under-baked.
IMAGINE if they had given him a Skarmory like in Adventures. Probably would be remembered as one of the coolest first gyms in all of pokemon.
Consider the following
>nine tails in phoebes party
It’s the little things
Good fix, would play.
depressing.
Flint if he Gen 3.
This team is stupid good.
It's so good that smogonfags can't deal with it and have to ban it
At least it was before I fucked errthang up.
Gen4 was where everything went downhill.
I love gen 4 but i think out of the older games it was the first extremely forgettable roster. Nothing stood out to me.
Man gen 4 has some of the absolute worst designs ever
wait until you see gen5
I've been aching to play some rom hacks. What are some good rom hacks? I'm using Unbound as a baseline here with all the mons and QoL changes, original story might not needed.
It's not finished but check out Coral. Rocket Edition is short but a lot of fun.
Pokemon prism for new regions in a gen2 engine with special split.
Radical red if you want a fair challenge.
Snakewood if you're retarded
>Radical red if you want a fair challenge.
I played that a while ago. The Mewtwo cave and E4 were far from fair
Which one of you were the Link Cable slut of your school? I was very popular because I let all the boys use my Link Cable however they liked.
Man I miss Emerald
Had a lot of friends who played gen 3 and we often battled and traded.
Was a lot of fun
Any rom hacks for gen 2 or 3 that just make the ai more challenging? I dont want gen4+ stuff backported just a difficulty hack.
AI challenge is down to move sets and team comp. It’s hard to get more difficult than an enemy that predicts your moves and switches because it reads them, but that’s what Leaders and Elite Four members get to have. They simply feel easy due to lack of tools in their team compositions.
Polished Crystal rebalanced the teams in the Battle Tower and Factory with all the changes they've made.
Gen 3 is the best. Take it from someone who makes his living playing horns on the open sea, it's top notch.
Gen 3 has the most nostalgia even though I barely played it.
Thoughts?
eh
How do I get into the top secret Crystal discord lads? I love organizing raids on random Ganker threads about <game i hate>
https://www.rejuvenationgame.com/
come and pray a game
warning: intense edge and sexy grills
>pokemon essentials
better than what you're playing
Okay fine, I'll play it
nice, make sure you play the classic mode
the difficulty with the field effects make this game worth it solely on the battling side
>8 gens of pokemon
gay, give me gens 1-4 at most
I'll play it when it is finished in like a decade
t. enjoyed reborn even if the story was shit
I'm just gonna assume ur one the devs but I will try it
Playing now and it's pretty good, thanks Anon.
Most fangames are shit. The only good hacks are ones with minimal changes and are just basically QoL updates to the games (eg. all mons available).
shit take, fangames can be really good if you play the right ones
good story and pokemon go together like peas and carrots
I enjoyed pokemon clover
Route 113... Home.
Walkthrough tells me that you'll see ash falling from the sky when you get to Route 113... I though that Ash Ketchum would fall from the sky...
Good comfy song
I wonder if those lil' ninja guys got mesothelioma from hiding out in piles of volcanic ash
>Standing at the edge, overlooking the ocean
>You know the journey's almost over
>There's just one last push before the final challenge
>So what do you say?
>Finish it how you and your friends started it:
>Together
>ever grande city
So…where’s the city?
Wouldn't you like to know?
in the fanfic
It'd be cool if any of the pokemon cities looked like they did in the Anime.
It'd be cool if the games were anything like the anime, that's all people actually wanted.
why do people not fucking understand the theming of this?
you're at the end of your journey
there's absolutely nothing standing between you and the pokemon league
making it a 'city' would mean filling it with bullshit houses and stuff to distract you before the actual pokemon league
calling it a city and then not even putting a single building shows just how laser-focused the trainer is on becoming the champion after everything they've been through up to this point
why do you think every npc says shit like this?
Sunk Cost Fallacy: the NPC
I’m a gen3 zoomer and I remember shitting my pants when I realized Magcargo was actually a gen2 Pokémon and not from hoenn
Pokemon peaked here and everything since then (except the pokegirl designs) is shit.
You cannot change my mind.
Pokemon peaked from gen 3 to get 5 and there is an argument to be made for pretty much any of the gens to be THE peak so I won’t contest your pick.
Tried out the remake not too long ago, it's nice how buffed Mightyena got after the splits. And the new moves are great. Stands shoulder to shoulder with the Zigzagoon I always get.
RSE had the best manga arc sad ORAS ruined it
My man Ruby fucking won.
indeed
is she mute or something?
also nice thigh gap
yeah hoopa ring made her temporary lose her voice
Was there an ORAS manga arc? Did it ruin these two's relationship or something?
Yeah and no. It’s more that it came along and decided to fuck around with their relationship and reset it a bit so that we could have drama. Instead of them working together all the way through as would be the logical conclusion from the ending of RSE, they argued, went their seperate ways and did things independently of eachother because muh pride and it was just painful to watch. They work it out in the end but man did it suck to watch them retread old ground.
for me they brought back Maxie and Archie despite implying they died, and I know about DP distortion world linking the event but still bullshit at least we got Zinnia
SECKSO
>best manga arc
>with that ending
ha HA
Nah, BW and DPPt arcs were better.
>sad ORAS ruined it
At least they gave us this
yellow and team rocket vs the elite 4 was the peak of adventures. GS was boring. RSE was a return to form
>gs was boring
Filtered
BW2 had no story and I feel like the manga author doesn't have the right to age up official characters so they really did him dirty such a shame
Gen 3 has some of the coolest routes and towns in the series, but somehow people are nostalgic over the most boring part of the game
More power to them I guess
Lilycove is my biggest filter. I've done plenty of runs up until there and then the bittersweetness of RSE kicks in. Fuck the water.
do some contests to bring your love back
I still love everything up until that point. I just don't want to go through the ocean. Fun's over, time to swim. Nothing but tentacools and pelipers for the rest of the game.
use repels dummy and get to the fun shoal cave
STOP IT
STOP IT
STOP LIKING RSE OR I’LL FUCKING KILL MYSELF
YOU FUCKING TRANSPHOBES
I miss gen 3 I remember transffering pokes from picrel over to ruby and emerald
>sister had sapphire
was she hot
yeah I fucked her
>XD
go back
>girl sprite
Ywnbaw
i'm 33, and never actually finished ruby/sapphire/emerald before last night. always lost interest around when the legendaries start fighting. never realized how close i was to the elite 4 before that. finally powered through and... i dunno it feels fucking empty compared to gen 2 and 1. maybe it's because i waited to so long i don't have any nostalgia for the end game? do i have to go out of my way to go fight STAYVUN to get proper closure? it felt like a cake walk running through the elite 4, you don't get to fight may at the end even though she shows up, wally was a homosexual on victory road who i easily curbstomped plus he never actually felt like a rival at all, just some weak fag who was riding my coat tails. i dunno shit felt kinda unsatisfying. can i say that i'm done here or should i go do some more shit? not interested in battle frontier or IV/EV autism.
Nostalgianagger
i'm not, not entirely. i really enjoyed scarlet and violet, it's actually what got me interested in playing through all of them and giving them their fair chance. i do genuinely think nostalgia plays a big role in how i feel about the games in general though. gen 1 and 2 hold big significant places in my childhood, and the first 10 hours of ruby and sapphire do too. i just never really got a chance to play it in full when i was a broke ass kid.
It's funny how everyone thinks the peak of pokemon is the game they played when they were kids.
Fuckin hell.
it's funnier that everyone who played pokemon are still kids
Started with Johto and I think the game peaked at BW2 so I wouldn’t say everyone
Started with Kanto and I think BW2 is complete dogshit so I yeah I agree
I started with Ruby but I think BW2 was the peak so what does that mean?
Started with Red in 1999 and Gen 4 is the peak.
I played FRLG, then DPP, then HGSS, I saw HGSS was the peak and just stopped
started with yellow then played crystal and emerald
Emeral still the best
Littleroot Town, Homes
aaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAA EU VOU GOZAR
What do they eat?
the lost souls of new mauville
What do they eat?
magikarps and tentacools
The only Pokémon game where you have both parents. Also thought the idea of fighting them as a gym leader was pretty awesome.
Back before sword and shield were officially announced I imagined a PokeBritain game too which involved your character’s mom being the present champion you’d fight at the end which would then become a doubles battle when the queen joins in.
Someone should remake gen 3 with gen 2 graphics and time cycle. That would make it way better. I can't stand to look at gen 3 graphics.
When I die, I hope that I'll be reborn in a world like the Pokemon world.
what kind of meat will you eat?
I'm sure that there are a few Pokemon that humans still eat. The games make reference to Slowpoke tails.
Regular meat I guess since shit like bacon/ham/prosciutto are canon things in the pokemon world appearantly.
Pokegirl pussy.
Has anyone here ever been to Mirage Island?
Secret bases blew my mind as a kid.
It was one of those "Videogames can do THIS?!" moments.
I spent so much time in my Secret Base. Even the ORAS version was pretty cool.
love this lil nigga like you wouldn't belive
getting a mega evolution was the best thing to ever happen to him.
Fav pokemon ever, caught his first form cause it was so cute, became a badass iron dinosour later. This is how evolutuons should be, not become a gay furry dancer at stage 3
for me, it's flygon
I like Garchomp a lot, but I avoid talking about it, lest people think I'm a turbo metafag. Flygon is also one of my favorite pokémon
I've only played Korosu and Pure Pink when it comes to ROM hacks tbh. Don't regret playing either.
Korosu was fucking kino.
Why did they replace Steven with Wallace as the champion in emerald?
Thanks for reading my blog.
I got the DLC as well, but I need to finish gym rematches and school tournament
first
I love gen 3 and gen 4 to an almost equal degree, tho gen 2 is where it's at for me.
.
I was born in 95, so Gen 3 was the first one where I knew what was what and got it at release. Even had my grandad bring back emerald from usa before it was out over here. I like it, that being said the downfall is clearly here. So many concept designs and cool designs, absol, the weather pokemon, trophius etc.
hag'd
For years I thought the hat was actually just white hair with a headband
Everyone did
what... baffled by the realization I'm having that it was a hat the whole time
Shut up, he had spiky white hair and not some gay ass baggy hat.
Is that clear?
Anon I...
surely those are just some miscolored pixels, right?
>pixels
It's a drawing.
s-sur-surely the artist let the pen slip, right? RIGHT???
I raise you
I call
Correct
incorrect
I also like the idea he has a weird color fade
I just hate the stupid hat
Well get used to it, kiddo.
No, fuck you
>ruby and sapphire wedding bands
Fuck any character design that has a male wearing capris
REBOLANDO DESSE JEITO VAI ME FAZER DELIRAR
Gringos will never know the pure SOUL that was Littlegozo Town.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are better these days
MACH BIKE OR ACRO BIKE
BIKE WAR NOW
is there a difference? i always chose wich look cooler
I liked the Mach bike as a kid but but after playing ORAS, I switched to Acro. You need both to fully explore the map anyway.
Artificial choice to pad playtime when you could just have both.
This essentially. Gen 4 was able to utilize the bike for inputs challenges or traversing terrain without having to add a superfluous option.
too bad gen 4's map design is dogshit and there's only like one place in the entire game where the bike is even relevant.
Starting a new run with Abra as my starter and only using psychic/ghost/fairy types tbh.
I keep wanting for enjoy gens 4 and 5 but theyre full of minor annoyances like inconsistent name capitalization, shiny locks, weird form incompatibilities and other bullshit.
3 is just so much easier for me to blindly enjoy.
>physical/special split is the most impactful gameplay change in the history of the series
>but I can't enjoy it because... inconsistent name capitalization
I dont care about that autistic shit I just want in game trade pokemon names to be all-caps in gen 4.
>physical/special split is the most impactful gameplay change in the history of the series
In a negative way, maybe.
>NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT MY ALAKAZAM (that was already falling off) AND SFMA WITH THE MOST SPECIFIC OF NICHES!
>dragon type being retardedly broken is good for the game bro trust me
>A rare type mainly used by endgame trainers shouldn't be tough to beat
You are the reason why Steel got nerfed.
>Offensive Pokemon being restricted to either being a physical or special attack because of their typing is a good thing
>I’m a retard who doesn’t understand how the game works so that means they were restricted
>I'm a deplorable dumbass that thinks a physically oriented Dark/Ice type could be great before Gen 4
>I’m retarded and don’t understand how the game works so that means Pokemon are bad based on their typing
>I'm a deplorable dumbass who thinks that typing isn't incredibly important for determining a Pokemon's role and functionality especially in one of the earlier generations
yeah bro gengar is dogshit in gen 3 because both its types are physical you totally know what you’re talking about and definitely aren’t a braindead zoomer
yeah bro feraligatr was so good in gen 3 because its primary offensive move was special you totally know what you're talking about and definitely aren't a braindead millennial
>zoomie thinks feraligatr was good in gen 4
aww that’s cute
fuck you
yeah let's pretend kingler is good in gen 4 and not still just a total shitmon so my zoomer narrative can work
fuck you
>physical/special split is the most impactful gameplay change in the history of the series
In a positive way, definitely.
fuck you
sir, your energy ball?
He's probably just mad about Leaf Blade no longer being special. Tbf, it got buffed from gen 4 onwards from 70 to 90 power, but grass special moves like Energy Ball, Solar Beam or Leaf Storm are usually far more desirable
Phys spec split was a great addition, but it retroactively FUCKED certain mons. For instance, Treeko’s line went from being an incredibly powerful fast special attacking grass type into being filled with physical moves in its set but holding the special attack bias. On the other hand, mons like Absol got to make proper use of their stab for the first time ever. Phys spec split was great but it had knock on effects that GF never bothered to solve through rebalance or otherwise.
hgss will always be my favorite but i love replaying emerald, easily my number 2
I've been benching my starters in Gen 3. Too many runs done with them, looking for the authentic no cheats trainer experience
Littletroon town
The best gen3 rom hacks are those that do QoL, whether it be phys/special split, updated base stats, updated move power or pp, giving bosses full teams and the like
Adding gen 4 or later moves should only be if you do the damage split, and not go overboard (like having dark pulse be a counterpart for crunch or psychic with psycho cut or zen headbutt), but personally i don’t like when later pokemon get added
I want to go back. Back to when life wasn't miserable.
JUST EMBRACE THE KINO MY SONS
Make a game that isn't falling apart first
But enough about Gen 5.
whats the source on that nemona pic?
i refuse to play 3d gamefreak pokeslopanymore. they still not able to compete with pokemon coliseum 20 years later
which do you prefer between colosseum and XD?
gameplaywise XD makes lots of improvements in terms of QoL and added pokemon but i still prefer Colosseum for the setting, art direction, characters. I just wish these games werent a slog to play because of how slow they are
I just wanna chime in and say that if you're a pokémon appreciator you're based in my book
You're thinking of /vp/ discordbro, this is the comfy Ganker thread.
>this is the comfy Ganker thread.
That shouldn't be an excuse for "I like pokémon in general" homosexualry, either pick a side and argue in favor of it to contribute to discussion or fuck off.
gen 5 was truly peak
post you current team, don't care about which game
I'm 28, I don't play pokemon anymore
I'm not currently playing any of the pokémon games, but my last team was
>Dusclops
>Whiscash
>Medicham
>Electabuzz
>Abomasnow
>Magmar
in pokémon platinum.
i just beat platinum and x a few weeks ago, and failed a black 1 nuzlocke at marshal a few days ago. now doing heart gold nuzlocke
i'm 28 and pokemon is still fun
>picked Chikorita
based. Truly the patrician choice.
meganium is really cute and my gf (male) picked it and chooses all the names. we almost wiped to whitney's miltank because it's so fucking tanky and it got paralyzed by static before i could poison it
Im dicking around in Sapphire trying to complete the Hoenn dex.
I decided to change up my team after reaching the safari zone and benched my Gardevoir and a Marshtomp for Xatu and Phanpy.
With image this time. I need to train a Mightyeen because I want something that learns thief on level up so I can steal shit
I'm really curious as to the reasoning of your pokes names starting with "Bom"
I'm in the middle of Crystal Dust 3.0 with its GitHub test going on and it's
>Croconaw
>Magnemite
>Kadabra
>Noctowl
>Growlithe
>Skiploom
is that mice family pokemon any good?
it's very broken and ridiculous because of its signature move that hits 10 times
i have become maushold, the destroyer of ubermons
what game?
looks like Reborn
its fakemon shit but yeah
you will never be real pokemon
wait my game crashed and i noticed im too far back in the game no way im gonna keep playing this, gonna start Pokemon Gaia now or some shit like that
I got the 8th badge not too long ago and was filling my pokedex a bit so I'm overleveled
Everything I used on my radical red run
I feel bad having to resort to using pseudos but man Dragapult is cool
Joltik
Minccino
Drilbur
Hitmonchan
I wasn't planning on having a mostly Unovan dex so far, but here we are.
currently doing an Emerald Final nuzlocke, current team right now, about to do the final team aqua/magma stuff
just finished the weather trio event and am heading to victory road thats why i have 2 fucking hm slaves
I've been playing UM during my daily commutes, fun times
gen 3 mons sucked
I never played Emerald, only Sapphire.
Should I play Emerald or is there a mod that improves it without turning it into a fangame?
Just play Emerald. Ruby and Sapphire got hit harder by the third version obsoletion bat than any other games in the series, there's no point in playing them over Emerald.
>used to be a big big hoenn guy
>want to replay it
>bored out of my fucking mind
>play any pokemon
>bored out of my fucking mind
>play romhacks
>not bored for a few hours then bored out of my fucking mind
I can't go home.
Behold the ultimate RSE theme

naggers, please, quit dancing around the correct answer.
For me it's Lilycove. If I could settle down somewhere in the pokemon world it would be this, no contest (lol)
?si=DFQAHXuZHf3cOd0k
?si=5wFn32jHtsYPsd4w
?si=BD81lHQPmG0B6XGC
These 3 as starters still have never been topped.
mud
Objectively, the best starter trio.
All three are perfect.
Here is my secret base btw if yours is here too you have to delete it
(you cant see inside I'm still decorating)
I'll do mine after the league, I think I'll do it somewhere in the ocean
Also this is the tile with feebas on it I found it two days ago
You fool. It’s randomized every day.
That's DPPt, RSE tiles only change when you make a new ohrase in dewford.
the last good game before the phys/spec split ruined the game
I normally play on my unmodded (I hate having to specify that) GBA fat but fuck trying to take a good picture of that screen when I can hook my gamecube up into a capture card instead
>we will never have good map design in a pokemon game again
>only uses Platinum's caves for no reason
Please stick to shilling XY, you always go full retard when shilling Emerald, I'd go as far as to say you only do it to falseflag.
>Homes
whassup esse?
>using pokemon from different regions than the one you're playing in
You guys don't actually do this, right? You're not retarded to this level, right?
Some regions have such shit new Pokemon or such shit distribution it's difficult to do without picking up old favorites along the way.
In fact, I would say the majority of regions suffer from this problem.
Perfect..
eterna forest is nice
It's the best forest so far
I still think pinwheel is better, but I also have a softspot for eterna. The upgrade vieidian forest got in hgss is also great.
The rest of the games feel theme-less in comparison.
>too much water
And so they've never done anything again
I like Hoenn a lot too, but I don't bother if people dislike it or don't like it as much as me, they're entitled to their own views.
>walking through a valley of fertile volcanic ash
That was a memorable area. It has skarmories too.
would (you) make a bet with may?
To me these threads prove kids will eat up ANYTHING and nostalgia will make them think it was good
If you liked Pokemon games as a kid and are nostalgic for them then you have no business condemning kids for enjoying Fortnite or CoD as the franchises they'll feel nostalgic for in 10-15 years
