Live A Live

This is not clicking with me, and I'm not sure what everyone else sees in it and why it's so highly regarded. Am I missing something? I started with the Prehistoric setting, and that was painful. I've done the Western and Present Day ones, too -- the latter being the one I enjoyed the most -- and now I'm doing Edo and I'm fricking bored out of my skull. I'm probably just going to call it a day and trade it in, but before I do I just want to see if there's something I'm possibly overlooking.

It's a very shallow game that is most notable for trying a bunch of things back when that was a really novel concept when it came out. It hasn't aged that well, especially since the remake made the combat even slower than it was in the SNES version.
If you want a novel experience out of it it's a game you'd probably enjoy but if you wanted a solid JRPG it's a game that's just going to leave you disappointed.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of people say "Well, it was groundbreaking in its day." But it's not 1994. The story isn't there, and I think a lot of the Japanese humour is lost on me as I don't like slapstick.
      The music is great, though.

Dif Anon, am I missing out on anything if I emulate the SNES version and not the Switch remaster?

Not really. The only thing the SNES version has going for it over the remake is a lack of censorship and the more accurate translation. Which is unfortunate because if they just didn't censor it then it'd be easy to say the Switch version renders the SNES version completely obsolete.
The Switch version has significantly improved graphics, better menus with item descriptions that weren't in the original, and extra content in the final chapter. You'll have to ask yourself if you're willing to give all that up because of the censorship / localisation.

well....how big/what is the final chapter bonus content?
          more backstory?
          more bosses?
is it like the GBA Final Fantasy games where it's just some super dungeon BS?

There's an extra final boss fight that gives better closure to a certain character

hmmm...think I'll work on emulating that then
              thank you Anon

I think that the switch version has a more clear combat system thanks to all the info displayed. It also has extra content and the voice acting is great.

It's a very unbalanced and inconsistent game from 1994 and the modern version has a really bad translation. If you don't like it, don't stress, just move on.

The payoff is at the end. Do the imperial China chapter.

Frick it i'm gonna play and finish it on Mesen-S, 2D-HD engine looks terrible.

If you are not having fun with Edo then I'd suggest you to move on to another chapter, probably China or Near Future. Most people agree that the best part comes when you beat all other chapters but don't force yourself to finish the game it if you don't like it.

Fricking lol, these are the worst ones. Do Near Future, Distant Future or Kung Fu. For frick's sake.

Distant Future is the second-worst, though.

Distant Future is amazing for everything except combat. And there's plenty of that in medieval.

Remember to grind your characters, the final boss will kick your ass if you dont

This is probably what'll get me to drop it. I hate grinding in JRPGs, which is why the genre is so hit and miss with me.

        >I hate grinding in JRPGs
        So, you don't like JRPGs?

No, I like some, which have generally been the ones that don't wienerblock me and ask me to engage in repetition to inflate my numbers.
I recently finished FFXII and never had to grind in that (although I'm under the impression you do for the optional side bosses), and I didn't have to grind in Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
I find the older the game is in the genre, the more it's going to fall back on that design philosophy.

But anon, if we don't force you to partake in mind numbing repetitive activities how are we going to inflate the length of the game??

Grind? The random encounters you get should be enough.

This was my experience too. I played several of the scenarios and they were just a slog. Only the western one was somewhat entertaining. I dont get how people were saying it was the best rpg of the year because it's fricking boring. I say this as someone who predominantly plays and enjoys 16 bit rpgs

I only just started playing but wtf is wrong with this game? In the first two stories I played a child loses their father as a joke and I likely missed another scene of it happening in the third.
