prolly one of the most nostalgic games in my memory box (brain). i remember going to a LAN center lock in and they bought it a few days back when it first released and popped that b***h in the Xbox 360 which had come out like maybe half a year earlier and my brain imploded from the graphics and details (at the time). Shit looked like absolute real life, I felt like there was nothing that could be advanced further in the realm of video game graphics and we were experiencing the apex of computer/video games. Looking at the game now is like looking at an old bag of milk. thank for coming to my TED talk

It's super nostalgic for me too, before I bought a 360 for myself I'd play my dad's copy on his ps3 before he got home from work. I remember the rule was, I was allowed to play it as long as I wanted til he got home, then I needed to GTFO. I heard his truck pull up when I was in a loading screen and the frickin game froze, I went into a panic but he was chill when I explained. Always thought it was precious how he'd always make himself in his games, his first character was an Imperial and he was upset he couldn't have a beard, then he made a Dunmer version of himself. One I think was named King Richard, after himself of course. He got himself permabanned from the mage's guild before a main quest where he needed to go through the Arcane University and it blew his mind when I bailed him out with the paint brush trick to get over the gate. Miss my old man.

This is one of the reasons I adored Knights of the Nine so much. It literally begins by starting you as a 'Pilgrim' in the Knights of the Nine faction and you must travel around the wilderness of Tamriel and pray at each of the 9 wayshrines of the Nine Divines.
It involved no combat. It involved no action. It literally just involved you walking around Tamriel and praying at altars.
I, of course, travelled by foot the entire way to each shrine and prayed. It was so humbling and so nice to be rewarded for dumb in-game RP stuff I had been doing the entire time up until now.

              Anonymous

The scaling is absolutely easy to workaround if you simply pick major skills you don't use. You have total control over your levelling that way.
RNG diceroll combat is totally unavoidable in Morrowind without mods (I assume it is avoidable with mods, but maybe not)

                >choose your class skills as skills you don't intend on using
This is exactly why it's shit design. If you level up as intended even with good skills, the game breaks. The Oblivion level manager minigame is by far one of the dullest rpg systems I've ever played.

                >choose your class skills as skills you don't intend on using
It's not that big of a deal and gives you total control over when and how you level.
You still level up regular skills just by using them anyway. Whenever you want to level just train a few skills or practice some of your majors and sleep.
It works absolutely fine. If you find managing your character tedious RPGs probably aren't really your speed anyway, zoomy

What's complicated about diceroll combat, lol? It's just stupid and moronic. There is nothing realistic or compelling about it and it is not challenging whatsoever.
It's literally just taking control away from the player and making every swing some moronic gamble outwith your control.

I was annoyed there wasn't anything after the main questline, even a just a couple of casual optional quests or different receptions by the Lords in the various cities
like Ocato's last line to you is that the two of you will have to work together to keep the Empire together, and then that's it
I would've liked at least some in-game difference since you're told you're assisting the Chancellor reign in the place of the Emperor

Solo role playing in a game is one of my favorite things about oblivion. NOTHING gets me as immersed as this game. Morrowind is old school jank, and Skyrim is very arcady. But oblivion is in the perfect spot. It's also just a beautiful game with beautiful music and a world I'd like to live in.

You guys might like Kingdom Come: Deliverance

For some reason it really gave me big Oblivion vibes without the fantasy element. As for roleplaying, some quests massively involve, all the way down to following sleep and eating schedules. The monk infiltration quest in particular stands out. I spent like 8 hours just save-scumming and seeing all the different outcomes in that one quest.

The combat is shit, but the combat in Oblivion is shit too, so you should feel at home.

I tried to but the tutorial is major ass and the game is eurojank. I don't know what it is about European games always having convoluted systems and clunky combat with too many unnecessary mechanics but kingdom come just didn't do it for me. The insane amount of cutscenes and the fact that the main character is so boring just failed to capture me.
Oblivion combat is simple, it's like CS:source combat, it does all that it needs and is fun.

            Anonymous

That's fair enough. You literally start as a giant moron and have to spend hours getting him to king status. The tutorial is way too long as well. I love medieval shit though so I stuck through it and it's one of my favorite games. The character and story gets really good about 1/5 of the way through.

It is janky af, but idk when you played it. I played it after all the DLCs came out and they stopped updating, and it was MASSIVELY less buggy than release from what I can tell.

Weapons degrading was interesting, having to spam repair hammers and having spells like disintegrate was cool. I liked all the guild quests better than Skyrim.

Over the years of killed a lot of my criticism of this game through replays.
    >if you join the thieves guild you shouldn't be able to join mages guild
This one criticism I used to parrot is moronic because if you were a thief it would make sense to learn magic and have a wider breadth of experience and network of people and if you were a mage what would it hurt to join the thieves guild, gain more contacts, have a knowledge of dubious mages and all it cost you is a shitty mages stuff you can make in spades. The fighters guild is the one that should hard bar you considering they won't let you join if you have infamy unless you have a 100 fame, a fighter is less likely to deal with mages or thieves than a mage will with a thief because mages often aren't concerned with the moral validity of the acquisition of materials and thieves need to have some kind of logical way that's not connected to a moral system when they come across cursed items or need magic I fo. It's the one criticism I look at now from rpg gays that instantly outs them as people that don't play rpgs

      Anonymous

To be honest I don't see why the Fighter's Guild would have a huge problem with convicted criminals and past ne'erdowells joining their ranks as long as they know how to swing a sword.
A lot of their members are former soliders and mercenaries so they've all likely gotten into a bit of trouble with the law from time to time.

      Anonymous

Never heard that take before. It's really bizarre.

Especially because my absolute most favourite thing to do was to be in the dark brotherhood while joining the mages guild. So while I was a college student with debt trying to make ends meet I'd take hit jobs to pay for my education. And then once my character was in the university he would also be this bad ass spy/agent/assassin and I would pretend it was an anime.
I still think it'd be a great standalone game tbh.

Why would people play modded Oblivion instead of modded Skyrim? Genuine question. I like vanilla Oblivion more than vanilla Skyrim, but never got into modding them. Seems like there would be a lot more to do with mods in Skyrim is why I ask.

Modding oblivion is such cancerous ass that the effort will never make the outcome worth it. Vanilla is the only way to play. Because all the mods rely on the physical disk version and for some FRICKING Black person reason steam uses a different version that makes mods not compatible.

Unofficial patch and 4GB mod are pretty much mandatory for oblivion to run smoothly on modern hardware.

That shit you posted "works", but still looks like crap. Additionally, it breaks easily if you have any mods that touch, change, or add any NPCs period.
