how many decades have companies been around and still they don't realize they don't win by chasing trends?
sure some things need to change to stay current but not like that

You just have to be there at the right time. Just before it becomes a trend and theres a huge rush towards whatever is trendy.

Almost every major western publisher has a successful battle royale except ubishit. EA has apex, actishit has warzone, epic has fortshit. Ofcourse they want a money printer too.

The biggest BR (Fortnite, still) is one that chased the trend anon. One of the other popular ones was also a chase (hi Apex).

        Anonymous

Fortnite wasn't really chasing a trend, since there was only one other major BR game out at the time (PUBG) and it offered the first console BR (and the first F2P BR) since PUBG was still PC exclusive at the time.
Apex just got lucky that a bunch of vtubers hopped on and made it super popular in Asia.

          >Fortnite wasn't really chasing a trend
PUBG was the biggest fricking thing when it was in early access. Of course Epic was chasing a trend to repurpose their tower defense game assets into a BR.

            Anonymous

A trend typically requires more than one instance anon.
The only BR games at that point were PUBG and modded game modes.
Even the game that people like to pretend kicked off the BR craze (DayZ) wasn't actually a BR game, but a survival game.

Anon, a trend is started by one, popular game. PUBG started the Battle Royale trend. Fortnite followed it. Your pedantry doesn't change this point.

Man, i remember very well those days. Fortnite was NOTHING against pubg. They released a gamemode tu jump in the new trend and after a long time they began to gain momentum. But in the begining i wouldn't have invested a penny in epic games. Boy i was wrong.

You can chase trends, but you need to be a fast follower or just make "better" game than everyone else. Blizzard has not make an original product in its existence, but it has been very succesful. Being original rarely pays off in big way.

It baffles me how many call Odyssey the "last good" AC when the formula was already run into the ground this badly. "Well at least you don't need 200h to finish it" seems to be a common argument after Valhalla which is just ridiculous and speaks volumes of the low standart these last Ubisoft cucks have. Hell even their holy cow, Far Cry 3 really pushed it already with the generic open world formula.

Honestly the way this firm is run and by whom, I don't see a future ahead besides a buy out. They're just chasing trends at this point, well they have for many years, but at such a level of tardiness and incompetence at this point that they're just burning money on really fricking terrible upper managment ideas.

          >you brush into people
          >you watch a movie

The only Ubi games I really like are Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia, otherwise their games always felt junky and particularly age badly. Far Cry 5 felt good for the first part, but it overstayed it's welcome when I realized I now have to repeat the same thing 2 times more in 2 different areas.
It's impressive how quickly they went from being one of the 3 biggest multiplatform publishers to suddenly being on verge of dying.

To be fair Hyper Scape was fairly unique for a battle royale, most people didn't give it a chance but it was the closest thing to an arena shooter in a long while.
Lots of good projectile weapons, lots of mobility, everyone was constantly moving at mach speeds in the air and shit.

It was a fun game, but the shitty netcode, people who abused running away in shields and the generic map where every single place looked the same probably didn't help much. They really should've worked more on the map, at least, I liked the verticality of it.

It's pretty covered market, yes. Esoecially when you take into account that you need a decently sized playerbase to make the whole concept work, so once your numbers start to dip, it's exodus time.

Remember a couple generations ago when coop campaigns were the big thing? You "only" need one friend to enjoy them. Didn't work because gamers are loners, but it makes more sense.

I'm surprised the genre became so popular to begin with. You loot stuff for 15 minutes, then someone you can't even see shoots you in the back, you die. That's was the entire game, time to queue up again.

Not really. Shooters BRs have been done to death. Devs are trying to shoe horn in BRs into other styles of games but nothing has stuck. ie rumbleverse and deathverse trying to be melee focused BRs.

fall guys gave me hope for a non-traditional BR but that game controls like ass and I haven't seen any good non-traditional BRs come out and stay alive for long, the other 'big' one I remember is crab game which was fun for a bit but clearly just a fotm meme game

I'd kill for a cool platforming BR that doesn't do the stupid fall guys thing where they make characters handle like dogshit
