Longest you've ever grinded for something.

I'm trying to get the final guard's weapon and I've leveled up 15 times in the process, so it got me thinking, how long have some of you spent on getting one specific time? Are there any particularly egrerious droprates in some games? I'm talking less than 1% here.

It's not the developers that are autistic, it's the people grinding for a drop that rare instead of just playing the game that are autistic.

Items like this are supposed to be secret. You're not supposed to grind for them, they're supposed to pop up rarely in some people's playthrus as "OH SHI-" items. Kinda like Warmech on the bridge in FF1.

          Anonymous

          Frick off moron.
The premise of the game is that every enemy has a soul you can get. It isn't a "secret." It practically begs the player to collect all of them.

            Anonymous

Not really though, even in the context of souls you're not supposed to get them all, you're supposed to make do with what you get and every playthrough would be different because of that

but then people like you just look up a guide for the "best" souls and grind for them, making themselves overlvl'd in the process as well

              Anonymous

Collecting every soul literally gives you a special item, so yes you are meant to get them all.

                >a special item
The Chaos Ring is utterly useless by the time you get it. And would snap the game in half if you could have it early. Its a fun bonus toy, and not intended for normal use. No, you aren't supposed to go full autism and get all the souls every single run you idiot.

The most grindy thing I've done is a swordless zelda 1 playthrough. The main grindy thing is having to get a ton of rupees over the game to buy all of the extra weapons you need to make it work, and to have a huge supply of arrows since those are your main weapon until you get the rod. Incidentally, I'm still stuck on my run, because frick wizzrobes. Frick them so hard.

Not him, but there is a significant difference with having two crissaegrims in SotN. With one, you can kill dracula before he finishes his first summon. With two, he'll be dead before he finishes swiping at you a second time.

Speaking of pointless grinding, I once spent hours collecting $2000 gold from this candle so that I could use the duplicator to use throwables for the rest of the game.

Should have used the room in the coliseum area with musket skeletons and knights. Keep running through with chakrams or the swords that fly out and the knights won't use their barrier. Hold a shield at the same time to block the muskets. There's a 1k or 2k bag in there. Can't remember which.

That was a considered option, but as you pointed out that room is loaded with shit that can kill you quickly if you don't have the right setup, and I didn't want to get into a situation where I grinded 100,000 gold just to die on accident. That's why I ended up picking the bag in the cavern. Walking distance is longer from a screen transition, but its much safer.

I got one my first playthrough by blind luck without even trying, fricked around with it for a few minutes and then equipped something else. It was only later I learned it was considered hard to find and OP.

Not like it matters in SOTN anyways. I'm glad I played through it the first time being blissfully unaware of how easy it is to break.

The Gutsy Bat in Mother 2 (GBA version).
I got all of the 1/128 drops in the game (at least equippable items) and that's the only one I was missing, I grinded for months on and off. The thing is that the enemy that drops it is rare so it's a lot of time just trying to encounter them, then hoping for the drop. I played in short bursts here and there, like 10, 15 mins a day (usually when taking a dump, playing it on GBA was convenient). Eventually I got it, yay.

I was once suicidal enough to do this in Colosseum. To give an idea of how bad of an idea this is
      >1/8192 odds
      >normal shadow pokemon have that chance to become shiny after you catch them
      >shadow pokemon are commonly the last mon an enemy will send out
      >even the fastest ones to hunt in the game are 90 seconds per encounter since you can't save just anywhere you want
      >i hunted the final boss's shadow Tyranitar because I mistakenly thought it was the hardest shiny of all to get when it's actually among the easier ones since you have a save nearby and can skip the 5 fights before him by losing to him once
      >it took nearly 5 minutes per encounter since i had to fight his entire team each time
      >to even get fights this fast i had to grind to level 100 (you're meant to be 50-60 at this point)

took me over 2 weeks, but i got lucky, to get over 8000 encounters would have taken over half a year easy.

I thing the longest real grind I ever did for a single item was buying the RYNO2 early in Ratchet and Clank 2.

I was just replaying the games on the Vita version and I thought it would be a fun novelty to grind the bolts to get the RYNO2 as soon as it's available. Because the quantity of bolts you get scales depending on how many you have, I worked out that the best way of doing it was to just endlessly replay the 30 second challenge in the first arena since it always rewards at least 500 bolts and only takes like 20 seconds or so to beat. Probably took me like 15 hours or so of just spinning around in a circle with the lancer to shoot every enemy and repeat the mission. (btw the victory counter overflows at 255 so this screenshot was waaay more than 146 wins)

Doing that was incredibly autistic but it was a pretty fun novelty playing through the game just stomping everything with the RYNO on the new save. Literally the only enemy that didn't just get instantly deleted was the Gigantomech (which was a problem)

I want to do this again next time I replay the PS2 version.

I bought a Vita at a secondhand shop and it's pretty hard to find games for it. Should I download Ratchet and Clank? Does it play well?

        Anonymous

The vita ports are reviewed poorly for good reason, I'm pretty mixed on them myself.

Overall I do think they play fairly well but as is often the case with vita stuff, the rear touch panels make for awful L2/R2 buttons unless you have L2/R2 grips (I don't have my own, but I tried them once). It's not a BIG deal overall but it'll make the lock strafe control scheme in 3 nearly unusable. Personally I've always been a diehard third person user, but I know lock strafe is the most popular control scheme so not being able to play 3 with lock strafe might be a dealbreaker to some.

The performance is downgraded, it's 30fps with some slowdown. If you got enough explosions going on the game can kind of start crawling but major slowdowns don't usually happen without good reason.

The worst issues with the vita ports though is the sound glitches. There's a few glitches in general like some weird model stuff or broken transparency on some textures, but a lot of sound effects in the game are broken in that they either don't play at the correct volume (the background planes in 1's first level are a good example they always sound like they're right next to you) or they loop infinitely until you interrupt them somehow (the morph-o-ray in all 3 games does this). It's pretty damn annoying.

So yeah they're crap ports but honestly I don't think they're bad enough to ruin my enjoyment of the games. I probably wouldn't recommend the vita version to someone playing the game for the first time because you will not get a good impression from that, but if you like ratchet and clank games I'd honestly rather play the vita ports over the PSP games if I wanted to play a portable version of the games.

In any case though, if you want shit to play on your vita you might as well pirate it. I'm not really certain if you can alleviate any of those problems using CFW or hacks or anything I don't really mess with my vita that much aside from piracy.

      >I once spent over an hour trying to encounter the Pink Puffs in FF4 and they promptly wiped out my whole party

I farmed like 100 Alarms and fought the Pink Puffs many dozens of times but I only ever got 1 Pink Tail.

        Anonymous

Wow. I spend a lot of time to get 5 of those pink tails, to trade them for 5 adamant armors. I farmed a lot of sirens with edge, of course. I played the PSP version, the auto battle helps a lot, but that was a lot of time wasted, but i can say i'm proud of my "achivement". Now i want to get the the Metal King Helmet from Dragon Quest VI. I was never able to get the Metal King Armor from Dragon Quest V though.

I remember there was a rare car you could unlock in Gran Turismo 3 by beating the longest marathon in the game. Me and my friend did that like twenty times and didn't get it. What a shitty game

The grind in GT3 was fricking shit. I remember I just kinda gave up after getting to the iA races. Might as well go watch water boil.

      Anonymous

I ended up getting that the first time I attempted that 2 1/2 hour marathon. The neato thing, or infuriating depending on your viewpoint, is the races that are marathons sometimes have the same cards to unlock, but the cars have higher chances of being unlocked/rewarded with more difficult races. It's how I got the Formula car doing the normal speedway race. It's something like a 10% chance to unlock, but I still unlocked it.

The IMP summon in FF4. I think I hit something like lvl 30 before picking up Rydia because I got it randomly once out of fricking nowhere and I wanted to get it again. But have never, to this day, ever gotten it, or any of the other monster summons, to this day.
I also took a swing at getting the zeus gloves once.
    Horseshit. Not worth the effort.
    >I think Bomb and Wizard thing were the other two summons if I'm not mistaken.

      Anonymous

There are 4 summons (imp, bomb, wieneratrice, and mage), though I don't think wieneratrice drops in the original game.
The best one is easily the Bomb, which is basically a single-target version of the Mist Dragon (HP-based damage formula that ignores magic defense) for half the MP (10 vs 20 for the mist dragon).

I did get the imp once way back in the early 90s and couldn't figure out what it was. I don't think I had Rydia back yet.

true, it doesnt drop in the ness version. I did get imp alllll the way back when i had the original cart. I called the NES hot line to ask wtf it was, and the dude was like 'its a secret summon'!

There's an Easter egg you can find if you have those figures, but it might only be in the Japanese release.

I can't think of any one item in particular in Diablo II, I've grinded an autistic amount of hours into perfecting builds though. If I had to guess I'd say I've spent more time Ber hunting than anything else. Getting keys and doing ubers is pretty damn grindy too. My crowing achievement in D2 was having a level 96 hardcore ladder wind druid. I used to pvp with him, which being in hardcore, was the tightest my butthole has ever felt. He survived the whole season until the ladder reset, and even had a few ears by the end of it. Good times.

for anyone unfamiliar, you have to replay the same battle over and over again (there's no random encounters, unlike the sequel), also your xp doesn't rollover (lvl 19 with 99/100 xp, gains 49xp, lvl 20 0/100), just loads of shitty little things that make it tedious to grind.

Off the top of my head, I think I spent a day or two on NES Final Fantasy killing ogres outside Elfland. Did it to grind enough money for 2 silver swords, the rest of the silver equipment for the party, and level 3 and 4 spells for white and black mages.

In Dragon Ball GT Final Bout you can level characters up. It's incredibly unbalanced. For literally decades I have leveled up my SSJ4 Goku. One punch will literally one shot any character under level 100. I was doing this as a stunt for a cable access show bit I never followed up on. Spent about three whole days trying to recruit this Black person on DQ6, rate of 1/1024. There were probably 4000 attempts, proving that statistics is a lie. Was worth it though, this blackboi can hit twice per turn and can wear the echoing hat theoretically yielding 4 spells per turn

      Anonymous

      >rate of 1/1024. There were probably 4000 attempts, proving that statistics is a lie
A rate of 1/1024 means that every individual attempt you have a 1/1024 chance of getting it, not that 1024 attempts are more or less guaranteed to get you what you want

        Anonymous

It also means shitty game design. It takes very little effort for the devs to code in some kind of counter that ensures you'll get the thing after so many encounters so as to prevent stupid shit like this happening.

I'm playing Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards for the GBA and it's been a wonderful time, however I'm close to the end on my save, only the final 3 matches of Battle City left, and realized that there were only a few cards missing for me to have at least a single copy of all 900 cards available to purchase on the shop, so I decided that I wanted to go for it before finishing the campaign, since I've never been able to get every single card in a Yu-Gi-Oh! video game before, 100% completion I suppose, and it's something I wish I could do in at least one of them. I have more than enough currency to purchase all cards on the shop, at least one copy of each that is, I just need to make the few missing ones show up, however the ones missing each have a 10/65,536 chance of showing up there after every duel I win, so it's low. I'm planning on spending the night grinding against Mako Tsunami since I can beat him quite consistently, and I don't have anything much better to do. I would just use the passwords to make the cards show up, but it feels like it wouldn't be a legit 100% if I did that, I don't know.

I've played against Mako Tsunami 50 times since writing this post, so far 2 of the cards I needed have appeared on the card shop, but I'm still missing 5, they all have a 10/65,536 chance to spawn afterall, so even these 2 that did were quite a pleasant surprise, still, I fear this could end up as one of those situations where I play hundreds of times only for 1 card to never show up, I hope it isn't, I'll play some more in the next few hours to see what happens.

Well, I've played a little more, a lot more actually, and it happened, I'm short of a single card, Toon Alligator, after so many duels in the campaign and grinding, it still hasn't shown up once, of course the drop rates are low, but being short of only this is quite miserable, I'll keep playing and hoping for it to show up.

P.S. I've just heard about Kazuki Takahashi's death, it's quite an odd feeling that as soon as I go back to an old favorite of mine, and I went back to it almost out of nowhere, in hopes of getting a 100% completion of sorts, these news come out and hit me like a truck. I wasn't feeling too motivated to keep playing, especially since I can't stand when I'm at 99,9% and can't get the last thing I need, but I really want to pull this off now, as a way to cherish this franchise and its video games, but most of all the phenomenal and unique artist which brought them to us. RIP. I hope his afterlife has 72 virgin Dark Magician Girls, he's earned it.

Well, I've managed to do it, never thought I'd get all cards in any Yu-Gi-Oh! video game, because all of them love having extremely low drop rates for dozens of cards, but Sacred Cards might be one of the most forgiving, so it's the one I'd go for if anyone else wants to 100% one of them. I have to say some cards were tough to get, but few overall, most naturally spawned at the shop by the end of the campaign, I had fun. All that's left to say is that I wish Kazuki Takahashi finds peace wherever he is now, he made my childhood, and even my current adult life, happier because of his work.

Is grinding good game design as a way to keep players engaged and reward them for playing or is it a cheap way to extend game time? I wonder what everyone thinks about grinding as a concept and how it should be executed overall.

      Anonymous

Grinding is ideally a way for a player who is struggling with a game to be able to push through challenges that are too hard for them.
It also has the potential to create interesting stories. People wouldn't like Gyarados anywhere near as much as they do if you didn't have to put in the effort levelling up a Magikarp to get one.
Grinding is always fine in a game if it's fundamentally optional. If there's a way for a clever player to overcome all the games challenges without resorting to grinding then it isn't a problem that the game "has grinding in it".
I also find games like Rance VI and Disgaea interesting because while they have grinding, they also have systems that allow you to get extra experience from fights if you approach them in a clever way. So in those games the way to overcome the challenges without grinding is to grind, but in an intelligent, fast way that you have to discover for yourself.
On the other hand, grinding is bad when it's MORE efficient and a better solution than playing the game well and planning ahead. One example is Subarashiki kono Sekai. You get stats in that game not by levelling up, but by the sheer number of encounters you've done, and stats are MASSIVELY important. If you stay in the first section of the game and fight weak enemies for a while you steamroll later parts of the game that can crush a player who's trying their hardest.

In short, I think it really all comes down to execution.

Not exactly /vr/, but I tried getting a Munchlax in Pokemon Diamond. From Bulbapedia (edited):
    >There are 21 Honey Trees [...] If the player slathers Honey on a Honey Tree, a wild Pokémon may appear 6 hours later. If a tree is left unchecked for 24 hours, the Honey and any Pokémon will be gone. Changing the system's clock will have no impact on the Honey Tree's timer.
    >Four of the 21 trees have a chance to attract Munchlax; which four can do so are selected when the game begins, based on the player's Trainer ID and Secret ID
    >The species of Pokémon (or whether one will appear at all) is determined at the time a tree is slathered. Once a tree is slathered, saving the game and resetting will not change the Pokémon that will appear on it.
The probability of getting a Munchlax on one of the four trees is 1%.

There is no shortcut to this method of getting a Munchlax.

FF6. I thought you wouldn't be able to leave the final area once you entered, so I spent about a year grinding in the desert against Cactuar's to make sure every single person had every spell in the game. Marched right through Kefka's Tower with ease, and wasted Kefka in about a minute with a level 70 Edgar smashing him with Genji Glove'd Illuminata and Atma Weapon.
After that, I just started running through RPGs as low level as I could get away with. Beat Culex and the crystals in Super Mario RPG with a level 23 team.

      >I spent about a year grinding in the desert against Cactuar's to make sure every single person had every spell in the game
I'm guessing that's hyperbole? Or did you just play a couple of hours a week? Even if most of your characters had no magic whatsoever, it doesn't take THAT long to give everyone every spell. It IS fricking boring, though, so I'm sure it feels like a year. Same with uncursing the Cursed Shield. Of course, it's best to do so while you're grinding for spells to kill two birds with one stone.
      >Marched right through Kefka's Tower with ease, and wasted Kefka in about a minute with a level 70 Edgar smashing him with Genji Glove'd Illuminata and Atma Weapon.
Yeah, that's FFVI for you. Love it to death, but it's incredibly easy to break, and Kefka himself is a joke of a final boss. Even at levels in the low 40's it's a total cakewalk so long as you have decent equipment.
      >After that, I just started running through RPGs as low level as I could get away with. Beat Culex and the crystals in Super Mario RPG with a level 23 team.
Nice, I actually started doing the same. I think I managed to beat Culex around level 18 or 19, can't remember, just that I immediately head over to fight him as soon as I get the Lazy Shell. I don't know how you'd do it otherwise, though I'm sure people have figured out how to totally break the game at even lower levels.

And to bring it back to FFVI, I recently tried the T-Edition hack, and it was much harder yet also much more satisfying, and I did my best to NOT grind (beyond getting every spell, that is, but the enemies that give tons of MP don't usually give experience, so I didn't level much there). The new super bosses and Kefka himself eventually made me grind at least a bit, though.

I was a kid and I could only play the game when I was out of school for the day, homework was done, and my c**t of a sister didn't want the TV to watch something. It was harder to get TV on the weekends because that's when my parents were usually watching something. It took me about a year of grinding under those conditions. I remember maxing out the in-game time counter because I had been grinding for so long. I would have murdered someone to get my own TV.
        >T-Edition
Yeah, that and the Beyond Chaos randomizer are the best. T-Edition is great for a polished FF6+more experience, and the randomizer is great for the Ancient Cave mode.

Well I have in the past. Grinding didn't bother me when I was younger. Nowadays I don't play any. It's not grinding, though, I just don't enjoy RPGs anymore for whatever reason.

The late game dungeons in Dragon Quest 2 are insanely unbalanced and i spent a stupidly long time grinding just to get through them.

Enix is on record saying that nothing past the Sea Cave was play-tested.

I remember running through that cave to the final area and grinding at the shrine to be able to finish the game.

    >EarthBound all 1/128 equips
    >FFIV full Adamant Armors
    >DQV most if not all monsters, got Liquid Metal Slime
    That's my autistic resume.

Would you guys count getting 100 Super Jumps in Mario RPG?
    Because I did that.
Boy does that get fricking scary as you realize you're actually doing it.

I didn't do it on a normal enemy either, I was just playing through the story and I did it on a boss.
Not just any boss though, Boomer.
The samurai guy on the chandelier.
He has an especially long cutscene after you beat him, and THEN you fight Exor after.
And you can't opt out of any of it.
So when I killed Boomer in one turn with Super Jump, I was waiting this horrifically long time to be able to run back to Monstro Town to confirm.
But when I got the confirm, I felt exorcised.

Got both the Attack Scarf and Super Suit.
Never got either one of them before.
And suddenly the game was empty.
There was literally nothing more for me to do.
All I have is this story.

Pic for clarity. The 2nd RNG call is on the top, it returns random value in v0 register. It returned v0=0x79 in this case, so that would drop the 1st item in FF4 (interval 0..0x80) but the 2nd item in Intelude/AY (0x77..0xC6 interval).

Alternatively, modify interval boundaries (also pictured). I suggest 0x66/B3/E6 = 40%/60% distribution for monsters which can drop 2 items, 40%/30%/30% (3 items), 40%/30%/20%/10% (4 items). Again, this will only happen if you pass the 5% roll first.

Like 10 months for a Ceremonial Vestment in EQOA. I was playing while working and off, so about 14 hours a day on weekdays and 18 on weekends.
