classic jrpg from an era where everything japanese got dubbed because they thought americans would be scared of hearing a foreign language
it has numerous flaws in both versions of the game and it really just comes down to personal taste at that point but the soul is unmistakable

Bargain bin JRPG slop. It's basically the poster child for "generic anime game" in the 90s.

And physical copies nowadays go for over 150$. Generic JRPG slop is modern issue, most jrps up until the PS2 era classic/underrated status.

It's charming. Mostly easy with some difficulty spikes/a few tedious areas. There's level scaling if I remember correctly so grinding is useless.

One of my favorite childhood JRPGs, but gameplay wise it's pretty much standard. The WD script is one of the things that makes it stand out, but it's extremely polarizing.

Let me put it this way. It's translated by a company called Working Designs. They made a punching puppet of two of the characters (I have one of them).

On the back is it tells you how you can enjoy your puppet like re-enacting your favorite movie scenes. My favorite is (press button) "Just when I thought that I was out.." (releases the button) "They pull me back in!"

There is NO other RPG like Lunar. While the game itself isn't ground breaking, the reason it's remember so fondly is just how much love the company put into their game. The second PS2 game came with a small art book, medallion the girl wears, a fricking cloth map of the world.

And they really had fun with the translations. There's even a Clinton joke in one. They even included fanservice like the "bromides"; basically, full screen ecchi images of the female characters. One of them is Royce, a villain who is a fan favorite. The character in the game that you get it from admits there's something just so hot about a girl who's evil basically making fun of the fans.

It's really interesting seeing this perspective considering how angry people are currently for not accurate translations on media recently but instead opting for actual localization (working designs were well known for HEAVILY localizing instead of strict translations back in the day)

I had that Ghaleon (sp? haven't played the game in ages) puppet. Gave it away a few years ago to a nephew when I happened to find it in an old box.

interesting, I might check it out then. I assumed it would be the GBA version since I imagine it would be much easier to port.

gba version is complete shit, there's no way they'd ever do it.

for what, the mobile port? Yes, working design script (So all the moronic npc shit is still in) but it uses harmony's voice acting for all voiced characters. Apple version gives option to use jap voices which is nice I guess.

Even as a kid I thought "Magic king" was a weird title for the big bad. Decades later I realized they just translated Demon king 魔王 wrong. That might have been the first instance of me noticing that there's something weird about the translations here.

What I loved about the PSX remake was that it came out roughly close to Final Fantasy 8 which was advertised as "the romance Final Fantasy", at least in the West.

Lunar mogs the shit out of FF8's love story and felt more natural and doesn't try particularly hard to.

This isn't anything new, it's existed since 2012. The port was SO bad it got pulled from google play for being nonfunctional, so it's been almost exclusively apple only for the better part of a decade, they updated it in december with an almost complete rework, using an old translation instead of a newer re-done one (it was bad anyway, based on some hacky fanslation romhack), but everything else about it is still pretty mediocre. It'd be worth a fiver, but not $12. 0 interest.

What was the difference between Silver Star Story (PS1) and Silver Star Harmony (PSP)? They're the same story, right?
I only ever played the PSP version but I thought it was a pretty good game.

Lunar:TSS (The silver star) is the Sega CD version, the original.
Lunar:Legend (LL) is the GBA demake
Lunar:Silver Star Story(SSS) is the saturn version, upon which all versions after were based, new content from sega CD, better graphics, better sound, new gameplay features.
Lunar:Silver Star Story Complete (SSSC) is the PS1 version.
Lunar:Silver Star Harmony (SSH) is the PSP version.

The best, most distilled version to play is the sega CD version with a translation, it's straight up the cleanest way to play it, there's no bloat, but there's also not a lot of extracurricular shit.

Most people will recommend SSSC, the PS1 version because it is the most refined version of the game, best music, best art, best gameplay flow.
PSP is the easiest version, there's almost no grinding necessary if you know how to play the game, there's a new prologue, and a re-done translation (if you don't like working translation's translation with all of it's 90s-isms)

Translators for this game did not know Japanese btw.
It's a fun game regardless and shows how little dialogue matters for JRPGs, which are set-up more by story-boarding and the art.
