                Another one for you
They don't put these in movies and games. Why?
Because destruction of culture for the sake of creating a melting pot of brown mystery meat serfdom doesn't only apply to whites (europeans), but to everyone else too. When the americans put a Black person in a wizard suit they are both removing that merlin-styled wizard imagery from its conventionally european setting and also voluntarily ignoring the existence of black/african culture.
Those pozzed vidya/movie studios are far more racist than you can ever hope to be, because to them blacks are nothing more than a tool to muddle european culture. Again, this is proved by the fact that putting these designs in a game would make countless twitter subhumand start screeching about racism and cultural appropration or whatever.

You're wrong in multiple regards, you probably shouldn't get your facts from reddit.
First off we're NOT good at long distance running. We're good at dispersing heat, which means we can go on for much longer in hot temperatures than other animals (very useful for stalking prey in the safari)
Second, we have several physical advantages. We have incredibly maneuverable and dexterous digits, we're adept at climbing, and we're by far the best animals at throwing things.
Oh, and we just so happen to be, by a wide margin, the most intelligent animals on earth.

Magic and sneaking aren't satisfying. Nothing feels as intimate and personal as changing the world around you with muscle and blood, grit and strength, a heavy sword and a well placed strike.
Plus, I like the idea of being a challenger. An underdog, from bumfrick, ready to punch above the belt. You can never sell someone able to bend reality to their will as an underdog. Thieves get a pass, but most of their scrappy underdog power comes in the form of cunning, which is by and large not exclusive to rogues. Fighters walk up to trolls and ogres, coating their weapons in flame with oil and and themselves in iron. The others hide behind him and his steel balls. On the battlefield after, nothing remains but guts and glory.

Plus mechanically it's usually more engaging.

Mages and thieves don't scream when they get smacked in the face, at that point they're smears on the ground. Just ask the next dragoon you find, he'll tell you he's perfectly fine as he closely inspects the floor tiles. The next black mage will be standing in the way of certain death because he's still casting and too stubborn to move. If there's something that hurts everyone in a room, it's the guy in full armor and a shield that's still standing wishing everyone else were a little more competent.

There's nothing wrong with admitting how weak fighters are. Your plain jane sword and armor and shield are no match for things like demifiends and ghosts and other such monstrosities, so all that talk about the strength of your backs and the sweat of your brow doesn't really hold a candle to wearing enchanted equipment.

In most rpgs fighters deal little or mediocre damage unless they're using gear enchanted with elements the enemy is weak to. In some instances (like ragnarok online) no one can do any physical damage to ghosts at all and have to use holy enchanted gear or silver arrows/bullets.
Again, no shame in admitting you have to resort to magicked equipment to deal optimal damage, without which you're just a mediocre waste of space.

Why do you imply fighter only hits things with big sticks? Fighters are the only ones that actually existed in real life. Magic isn't real, and thieves like they appear in fantasy as dagger wielding rogues that lurk in the shadows didn't really exist either. So just look at history to see everything that fighters and soldiers can do. Their domain is everything combat related after all and history has a LOT of different types of combat

Nah. Archers are archers. Otherwise thieves would be fighters because they deal with weapons too. Hell, in games like Dragon's Dogma the ranger stems from the strider.

            Anonymous

No thieves primarily deal with stealth and subterfuge and use specific weapons as tools to help them but aren't primarily concerned with combat. Fighters deal specifically with warfare and combat and use all kinds of weapons

Traditionally in D&D, which is where we get most of our fantasy character archetypes from, fighter was always one of the most popular choices for archers and bow users. Plus if you want to look at reality, warbows are more like STR weapons than DEX weapons and you need to be very strong to use one. Also DEX is one of the most important stats for fighters alongside strength regardless

                Anonymous

I am referring to DnD. Fighter is strength as your highest stat roll followed by dex and con. Archers require dex as the highest stat, with wis and con as the second highest ones.

Our real world equivalent to magic is engineered tools, like guns and bows, those things that killed melee combat in warfare
What rogues in real life do is espionage, sabotage, and assassination, things that in the presence of long range, high damage weapons is very useful
Fighters nowadays usually just guard things and assault things while dying in high numbers

Thief has to be the gayest and the most situational class in the classic DnD trinity. It is literally a skinny edgy fighter whose main gimmick of being a stealth b***h only works if he can turn outright invisible. Otherwise he is just an edgy twink in a hot topic hoodie.
    >I set traps
    Traps are also gay.

      False.
In D&D terms thieves are skill monkies. You don't think you need one until your DM asks you to roll for perception half a dozen times and the thief is the only one passing the DCs and he just spared your party from eating 3 fireball traps, a pit fall, and a trap of the DM's own devising that would have sprayed the party with owlbear musk and then released a horny owlbear into the room.

it's unironically a special snowflake self insert mentality for these kind of people. They want to have their cake and eat it too, they want to be a normal completely mundane average guy with a sword who is simultaneously capable of going toe to toe with dragons and demon lords and giants, and they want to be able to win without using any superhuman feats of strength or "anime shit" when doing so.
It's literally the "I'm just an average japanese high school student" equivalent of tabletop gaming. BY DEFINITION being able to stand against a dragon or demon lord or whatever means your character is ridiculously exceptional and superhuman, you can't jerk off the "mundane" fantasy when you're regularly dunking on immortals. It's unironically more of a self insert power fantasy to want to be the guy who defeats a dragon with zero magical powers, zero divine blessings, zero anything other than "me sword gud" and still somehow survive direct hits from breath weapons and six claw, bite, wing, and tail attacks than it is to play something like a druid who turns into a fricking wooly mammoth before stomping on the dragon's face. If you can accomplish what the other people need magic to do without magic, you're still fricking superman by comparison.

If any regular moron with a crossbow could kill dragons without being special in some way like these mudcore homosexuals fantasize about, then the world and gamewouldn't need heroes and adventurers to begin with and LE LOCAL LORD with his men in full harness would just go kill all the dragons themselves.

Let them be as super human as warriors. The problem games have is when they try to force martial classes to follow reality but let mages do whatever.

Anyone else wish there was a place that worked as the etymology of fantasy concepts?
      Like how the
Heroic Knight > Paladin > Fallen Knight >Blackguard/Antipaladin > Death Knight
      concept came about.
Really what is comes down to is that Paladins are holy warriors empowered by their faith and dark/death knights are knight-sorcerers that make a pact with a demon or become a lich/undead.

Ezio doesn't count, he's more like Jason Bourne in that he's also trained in combat and wearing half decent armor for most of the game canonically and by the end of the game basically wearing a modern body armour equilivant that was made from precursor visions that cant break and doesn't dull, also he canonically is genetically superior to normal humans because of isu dna and slightly stronger than your average healthy man

None of the shit you said changes the fact that combat in the Ezio games start out one of three ways : it's a section where you fight right from the getgo, it's a restricted section and you got caught, and lastly, the most common one to happen, you assassinated an enemy in plain view of the other enemies.

It depends on the type of system you want to do. Are the classes on their own compelling enough mechanically to be interesting on their own? How does cross classing work in your system?
Obviously people are going to suggest schools because that's what DnD does. If it makes sense when considering your answers to the above questions, go for it, but ultimately just do what you think will be most fun in the type of game you want your system to facilitate.

                Anonymous

Vorpal is a made up word from an old poem dude, you're asking me for hard evidence on something that hasn't ever been established. Vorpal meaning "really fricking sharp" is a contextual assumption im making on the grounds that it can lop off heads effortlessly and ignores slashing defenses because its so fricking sharp.

                Anonymous

so you can't say for sure that "Being really fricking sharp is not a magical property" because you have no idea if it was magically made or not...

Anon, the vorpal sword in Lewis Caroll's poem required multiple strikes to sever the Jabberwocky's head.

                >One, two! One, two! And through and through
                >The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
                >He left it dead, and with its head
                >He went galumphing back.

If it's "really fricking sharp" then it should have done so in one blow, no?

                Anonymous

bringing up Lewis Caroll is silly because
                a) we're talking about games, where "vorpal blades" are obviously different things which are likely magically made
                b) the whole vorpal shit doesn't really invalidate the "relics" part as a whole anyway

                >a) we're talking about games, where "vorpal blades" are obviously different things which are likely magically made
Alice of the American McGee games also takes multiple strikes with her vorpal blade depending on the enemy. Vorpal blades in DnD also aren't all ohko weapons, requiring dicerolls to dictate how many hits it takes to fell a creature.
                >b) the whole vorpal shit doesn't really invalidate the "relics" part as a whole anyway
It's literally a magic item though, which brings us back to the question in

Oh you mean magically enchanted shit?
If you're gonna go through the trouble of getting a fighter and finding magic shit for him to use to deal with something why not cut out the middleman and just hire a wizard?

of why not just hire a wizard to get it done.

Oh my bad, I guess slicing a demonic beast's head off in 2 strokes isn't sharp enough for you. I bet you order sparkling water too, c**t.

You are a tragically dense moron. A melee character's challenge is "how do I use my skills and items to kill this number of things and simultaneously not die?" You look at the skills and power you have available, and you play it out until you win, and that's the challenge. Magic users do the same thing, except their methods of killing things isn't standing next to it and keeping their HP up, it's a different set of challenges and data. It's keeping yourself alive while you do an obscene amount of damage with the right skills. It's the same basic principle as your Hit Things With A Stick, it's just cooler.

its a flanderisation. the ORIGINAL vorpal sword in DnD was the jabberwocky killing vorpal sword. on a 20 it instant killed vs a save vs death.
and since attacks per round was speed based in DnD with class considerations, a fighter with it was forcing enemies to roll a LOT of instant death saves, far, far more than the fricking wizard with their disintegrate.

Honestly yeah this makes sense. Normie mages casting extremely powerful spells should make you damn near catatonic or visibly age you or take it out of your vitality or life force, and there better be a damn good explanation for the types of people like Sephiroth that can just rain meteors over an entire battlefield with no cool down over and over like it's nothing without it taxing them, either they have an extreme or everflowing amount of vitality or spirit energy available to them or they have God like power, Lord of the Rings did it this way and even the upper tier spells there from Gandalf weren't world rending dimension ripping level shit despite him being a nature god

50% of the time the reason is not everyone can do magic, like Harry Potter where muggles exist. The other half is because it takes years to decades of study and not everyone wants to start their adventuring life at age 60. In neither situation does it ever have to have a physical toll to cast spells.

It needs some form of limits so it isn't just an instant win button and has some form of realism to it.
          Also, the laws of physics.
Even if you don't understand where the energy is coming from, conservation of energy would ideally apply, you can't just pull it out of your ass, you have to be disciplined and understand that you're still converting SOMETHING into SOMETHING else via not fully understood and scientific processes, and if thay thing is life energy or either, it would logically take a toll on you.

Also every action has an opposite reaction. Even if your pulling that energy from something other than your life force, logically running that energy through you and converting it to something else by the processes of spirit or your mind or whatever should logically probably have some kind of "kick" or negative reaction with your body, unless you have some kind of counterbalance, scaling in relation to how powerful the magic you are using is

That's a lot of words to say that you don't understand what the word "magic" means.

In any setting where "magic" actually exists, real life laws of physics automatically no longer apply. Simmer.

              >realism
              >the laws of physics
              >magic
The whole point of magic is that it's ridiculous stuff that looks at physics and takes a big steaming turd all over its head.
The problem with your argument about rules and the laws of physics is you're working on that saying "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" while at the same time ignoring that the saying states that it's indistinguishable from magic, not that it is magic. To paraphrase the saying in a way you can understand, "Any masterfully crafted cubic zirconium is indistinguishable from a diamond". They look the same, but they're not.

Nobody thinks that magic shouldn't have limits. Of course it has to have limits. But your laws of physics argument is hilariously stupid, so we're all pointing and laughing at you.

This is what I meant when I said "It's easy to handwave" and what I meant when I said that wizard mains are all homosexuals. See how they all go "It's magic lol nothing wrong with being an omnipotent characater with no downsides ever" and get hyper defensive on it?

I mean it doesn't have to be this way. You can have a setting where humanity always knew magic and it has to be learned again, or only some people can do magic.
I just think it's been done to death.
My point can logically apply to settings where magic was learned from another race or humanity discovered it one day, but wasn't necessarily born with it in mind.
              It's just a cool idea.

Don't get me wrong, magic limited by realistic laws of physics is neat and all, but the way you phrased it in your earlier post was pretty silly.

Jedi are monks at best, but they shouldn't really count. It's fighters vs wizards in gaming, and wizards are usually just too slow to be worth playing.

            Anonymous

homie Jedi are literally space magic swordmen. The fact that they act like monks does not mean that they play like monks. They use swords and magic, they're exactly what I'm talking about.

              Anonymous

They use lightsabers because their connection with the force gives them better reaction times, it's more unlocking a skill thanks to meditation than picking up a sword and practicing.
That connection is something they're born with, a lot of wizards require years of studying the supernatural while the force is just there.

It's silly to class them though, fighters as a class tend to be high strength or high dex with no magic, multi-classing just blurs things.

I don't understand why it's not someone like Heracles either. You have a gigantic chunk of ancient culture to draw inspiration from even if you dislike the nopon steel folded an infinite amount of times. Ordinary realism is already impossible in a world with magic, even the most basic b***h troopers should be geared up in magic gear from head to toes and "high level ordinary warriors" will be just magic commandos a-la Emiya Kiritsugu.

May as well actually give fighters their unique niche by allowing them to train to superhuman conditions.

I think it's chiefly a DnD thing. DnD started off fairly low key and gritty in the style of old pulp novels, but for some reason magic users were able to run away into full high fantasy over later additions. Western fantasy genre fiction is full of over the top fighting types (just look at capeshit), but it was largely kept out of fantasy due to DnD and various mage supremacy novels. Over the top fighting types are starting to become acceptable though, thanks to anime, vidya and a rediscovery of classical/mythology bullshit powers, in my opinion anyway.

You have been posting this response all thread.
A wizard could not use Blackrazor. He is not proficient. He gains no damage from anything. He can barely swing it. It is in the hands of the warrior that it is used to its full potential, because a "master of the arcane" "capable of calling down meteor showers that level empires" can't even use magic items correctly.

If magical items and their effects reduce the warrior to a caster, why can't a wizard control this magic better than someone who is incapable of performing magic of their own volition? Why are they unable to use this MAGIC item's effects? It's MAGIC. It's certainly not because it's a WEAPON, can't it? The power within can't only be harnessed by someone with a bigger dick than you, you're a wizard, you spent thirty years not getting any b***hes to have the most powerful arcane effects, and you can't even cast its effects on its own. Its power is, forever, beyond you.

"magic!" squealed the scrawny mage, unable to comprehend anything not written in his dusty tomes. The warrior might have spared a moment of pity for the dying mage, their kind was an unenviable lot. From birth they were born crippled, despite seeming no different form a normal man, their strength as an adult was lacking even compared to a newborn babe. The warrior could not spare any time for the deformed however, as he was quickly surrounded by joyous and attractive maidens.
The mage wheezed his last breath, a mere fragment of stone had ricocheted off the warrior's eyelid and pierced his abdomen. Blood poured freely and he rapidly grew weak, unable to even reach his spell components. As his world darkened he heard cheering.

Big Dick Paladin with Turn Undead.

        Anonymous

The Paladin's power comes from a God, but the God can't send their full power through a Paladin and not have him instantly explode. The Paladin simply becomes a vessel of the God's power, and there is a limit. That's why a Paladin is easily able to dispel undead weaker than him, but against something like a Lich or a Vampire all he'd do is marginally inconvenience them.

          Anonymous

Vampires wouldn't be under the necromancer's command and the only lich would potentially be the necromancer itself.
Besides, that's where the Big Dick part comes in, since you need one to take on the Big Dick Undead mentioned above.

as a starting point he needs an army of DEAD fighters, and usually to get those powers you either need to make some kind of fricked up faustian bargain to a capricious malevolent entity, or make it really fricking important to make sure nobody ever touches your magic-dollar-store-dracula-costume-gold-amulet-with-a-red-jewel-in-the-center

His weakness is the fact he's too powerful to win. If the bad guy is so fricking powerful and evil that him winning means the entire world ends or gets sent into an age of darkness or whatever, then he is guaranteed to lose.

It's true. The high tier vampires, like Vampire Lords are egotistical buttholes who prefer dwelling in their castles and having their servants, like ghouls or their childe, doing their bidding. They wouldn't be the part of a necromancer's army, but BBEGs of their own.

Other way around. Fighters are genetic lottery winners 99% of the time that either from having resources from being born in the nobility or being a tall gigachad with god tier genetics. Unless it's another "wizards are born setting," most settings a wizard's power is earned through hardwwork from studying and applying it through training. The thief is the true human class in the end anyway. No special powers and needing to use their brain to survive which is how humanity hunted bigger/stronger things than them.

this is just the cringe d&d take. if you look at wizards from mythology they usually have some kind of supernatural lineage. merlin was half spirit and gandalf was literally a god larping as a mortal. it wasn't until modern times that wizards became magical nerds who powered up by reading.

Depends on the lore of the setting. More important than that, if you recognise that effective fighting is comprised of two things - first fighting and second leadership and collaboration. Again, depending on lore, there are few mages. Mages cannot properly collaborate and if the lore is arcane and magic requires a great effort and an academic life long commitment to the arcane. Theives are inherently anti-social and so it falls on warriors both gifted both in inclination (unlike theives) and time (unlike mages) to be leaders. Warrior as a class should be better seen as "champion" just as mages aren't just idle dabblers. Being a champion means commanding the trust and love of your fellow man by your deeds and your foresight.
In the original D&D high level warriors become noble and commanded armies which the party mages would serve under using them as wealthy patrons to fund their continuing research into magecraft.
Theives are moronic and their initial conception as scouts just makes them another specialisation of warrior/soldier - which is what they are/should be.

Thief's are just the edgy pussy version of warriors, too afraid to fight danger head on. I feel warriors can easily do some things Rogues mostly do.

Fighter and Wizard are the ultimate bro duo and will always be. Thieves belong behind bars.

For me? Knight with very limited casting ability, a little bit of divine grace and an unusual knack for ballistae, struggling to choose between his by-the-book, stern shieldwielder comrade lady-in-waiting and the cuter frost bolt specialist cleric from his childhood that's much nicer to him and doesn't have shit takes about religion or attack people for no reason.

    >martial prowess from before being resurrected
    >learn the most twisted spells on the planet as a pastime
    >women don't come near you because your smell reminds them to wash
    >can just rape corpses if you really feel like it
    >get to wear the best bling
    bow down
