What? I didn't even know that this style of emulation existed until this thread. Also, what am I "seething" at? You're the one seething. All I did is essentially ask you a question via greentext. How can something that is completely free and downloadable on github be a shill campaign? What is being shilled? prolly the recomp execs that will be generated, will include some basic emu-like options like video, audio, and input options with basic Xinput and Dinput support. any extra option like game changes (like the low health beeps in zelda), will have to be added manually by the user by studying the generated code.

The N64 originals look frick ugly in high res to the point it takes you out of hte experience and makes for a worse one compared to playing on a tiny screen with dithering in the 90's

It was nice playing Master Quest and playing around with the enemy randomizer but I'm itching for some new shit and they aren't doing that. Map editor, actor editor, something that shows they want people to create cool shit with the port.

        [...]
Games are not made for fun, they are made for money. Their fun was justified by people thinking it was cool and buying it, because the developers had fun creating it. Publishers only cared about money and later on, making their games pretty to look at. The jump to 3D was a mistake, we should have stuck to 32-bit 2D and then jump into 3D right at new millennium. FMV's were a bigger mistake.

3DS version is a ground up remake that:
        >Replaces most every texture and model with higher res ones
        >Completely borks all 3 transformation masks (seriously what were they thinking)
        >Adds some QoL like skipping ahead to set hours, and a much clearer bombers notebook
        >Ruins all the boss fights by giving them dumb eyeball weak points
        >Adds the ability to save almost anywhere (but removes the old save system in the process)
        >Absolutely destroys the tone and atmosphere
There's a fan patch for the 3DS version that fixes most of the problems, except the last one.
Considering how hard majoras mask leans on its atmosphere, it's honestly too big of an issue for me to recommend the 3ds version in good faith.
Like look at these two images, the tone isn't even remotely similar.

the 3ds remake is one of those situations where they had no clue what made the original as good as it was. The zora swimming to me was by far the most baffling change.

The original is a fast paced 'race' where you run him down like some sort of death race, as more and more random bullshit gets thrown at you.
The remake forces you to stop, take off the goron mask, shoot his eye with your bow, then put on the mask again and build up all your momentum again as he runs away.

          >I suggest EX, and COOP Deluxe.
Alright, I was able to find what you're talking about from this, thank you, but why EX or COOP over the original?

            Anonymous

The original is just the base game only. EX is the one with a lot a lot a lot of options you can optionally toggle. (I suggest turning on mirroring the maps, it will make the game feel new like your first time playing it again)

EX is singleplayer only, which is why I suggest COOP, but specifically the COOP Deluxe, since not only is it multiplayer (LAN, or even an online lobby with strangers!) the Deluxe version removes a lot of limitations with it which allow for huge mods and romhacks to work with it.

simple put, I recommend you the best singleplayer version, and the best multiplayer version. That's whole Super Mario 64 on PC experience right there.

      You're missing quite a few:
      https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Game_engine_recreations_and_source_ports

Also this project is a straight up N64 recompiler (static recompilation is like the endgame for emulation), the goal is that any and all N64 games (well aside from the few that use custom ucode for now) can be statically recompiled and ported to whatever platform in minutes.

        Anonymous

        >static recompilation is like the endgame for emulation
Is it? Feels like those two are completely different things

          Anonymous

They do emulation at a hardware level or something, that could mean huge mods for games that aren't bottlenecked, and require stringing together workarounds.

          Anonymous

They're one in the same. A lot of what emulators do now is on the road to recompilation, but much more simple* and forgiving to implement. Also recompilation has been used in parts with emulators, some shaders and RPCS3 uses LLVM to do some PPU/SPU instruction recompilation.
*Simple being relative to recompilation, JITs/dynarecs are still mad complex.

Glad someone else is calling out the SoH homosexuals for botching the port. It was nice playing Master Quest and playing around with the enemy randomizer but I'm itching for some new shit and they aren't doing that. Map editor, actor editor, something that shows they want people to create cool shit with the port.

It's crazy how badly hobbyists mog the actual professional gaming industry these days, I know they always kind of did, but these days it really feels like all the talent is in the enthusiast scene, while companies are all relying on indian outsourcing and DEI hires that ship straight up non-functional products

I do wonder if nintendo will try to take these to court, since there's no legal precedent for decompilations. They *should* be legal, since they avoid any game assets, and the decomps actually use the CIAs old code decomp tool, but idk. You never know with how fricking moronic the boomers in Washington are now a days.

The thing about taking random nobodies to court against companies is they have the money to drag it out and basically make the smaller guy homeless over lawyer bills etc. Its not even about winning since yes the smaller guy will win in the end but an endurance test that most people opt out of getting into.

they cant. the code created by the decomps at the end is not the same code nintendo used, and much like any known sourceport or emu, you would still need the rom to get the assets needed to play.

nintendo cant do anything about it. specially since the code needed for a pc port fundamentally changes the games source code to a point that nintendo cant simply compare to its work therefore, theres no case they can make. (and THAT is if they have kept their codes safe, which we know for a fact that they DON'T)

They said themselves that this isn't aiming to decompile the whole game or anywhere close to make a pc port, it will just partially decompile it for fun and for some potential mod support. Maybe that's just them covering their ass, but i don't see it happening just because of how much more work it is to do a modern game compared to an N64 game

Would be cool to see it done with Animal Forest as well as 40 Winks, especially since the "PC Port" of that is just the PS1 game with an emulator from what I've heard. Haven't looked much into the ports lately, but curious why there haven't been attempts to do like what was done with Doom 64 Absolution, you need the ROM file at the start but it just extracts and repackages the assets into a new file so that it can be easily moddable.

    Great work.

I've been getting into NV lately, and it makes me wish OpenMW wasn't so shit and that there was a unified Bethbryo sourceport. Oblivion and New Vegas on a source port with all engine bugs and issues fixed would be a dream come true.

Nintendogays' most exciting game since 2017 was a 70 dollar expansion pack for a game from 2017. Sonygays' most exciting game is part 2 of a remake of a 1997 game. Xbox's most exciting is... oh wait Xbox doesn't have games, and they're trying for negative games by killing studios.

Imagine having fans as (or more) autistic than Nintendo, but its the "I raped my elderly mother" kind of autism instead of the "I made a recompiled PC port of majoras mask in 2 days" kind.

It automatically converts a rom file into PC code.
      Pros:
      >Insanely fast to make a game run on PC
      >100% accurate
      >rendering and processing are ran separately, so can easily change visuals and framerate without affecting gameplay at all, also means they run really well
      Cons:
      >Code is hard to read, would take a lot more effort to make mods for and such, especially on games that don't already have existing decompilations

So it basically skips ahead to the finish line of a decompilation, but then you gotta backtrack to figure out how stuff works if you want to make changes.

        Anonymous

theoretically, this is perfect. as you mentioned, it lets people start at the finish line with a working exe, but this will easily inspire more people to get to work into the recomp code and polish it to make proper pc ports way faster. instead of waiting for a decomp and then make the port.

but again, you have to remember that the recomp ports are not gonna work 100% the moment they are ready, you will still need to analyze, reverse engineer and fix the code in order to make it fully work and be able to add features and content to it.

I'm too moronic to understand the difference between this and emulation.

Emulation is a program pretending to be original hardware so the game software can run. This is taking the game software, chewing it up, and spitting out native PC code? But unlike a proper decompile the native PC code can't actually be changed and rewritten in any meaningful way?

      yes

      >But unlike a proper decompile the native PC code can't actually be changed and rewritten in any meaningful way?
It can, but the code it spits out is basically unreadable spaghetti, so someone would have to go line-by-line and decipher wtf each line is doing and that would probably take around as much as a regular decomp, maybe less?

        Anonymous

        >maybe less?

Even the best emulators still have a lot of bugs and are not perfect, this makes it so the code gets transformed int code that runs native on pc and is 100% the same as the code as the original game, so no bugs or limitations that come with emulators. As well as higher resolutions and framerates. And eventually mod support and such once the code gets documented and understood more

Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they're not there. But yes majoras mask emulates well enough and doesn't have any bugs that break the enjoyment of the game, but what this does do is give you unlimited framerates that works perfectly, as well as resolution scaling. And when the code is more understood the sky is the limit. Other games like paper mario and conker's bad fur day are far more obvious in the bugs and limitations they have

watch the video before shitposting, the whole point of the Majora Recomp is to be a proof of concept of a series of tools that can create a native PC executable out of any N64 rom with openly modifiable code.

should this work, not only MM will be having a native PC version, but EVERY N64 rom. human work will still be needed to clean and polish the generated execs to allow more advanced features like modding and 60fps support, but the groundwork will be set.

        >human work will still be needed to clean and polish the generated execs to allow more advanced features like modding and 60fps support
So we're only actually going to get good ports of the usual sperg games. The Goldeneyes, the collectathons and Pokemon. Hard to be that excited.

now, that might be a con, yeah. while theres tons of games that would deserve proper recomp polish, the games that will get the best recomp ports with all the bells and whistles, are gonna be the games everyone knows.

having said that, since this project promises native exes for any N64 game, maybe this will inspire fans of the more obscure games to work on them. but only time will tell how well people will use those tools, assuming the dev delivers and releases them.

....Why waste time on a tool like that for a console which already has the fewest games, fewest exclusives and worst games. Autism. Not worth entertaining.

There's no reason at all to do that? not only did the fricker steal their IP, but they already have the game on Switch.

      >but they already have the game on Switch
Nintendo's own emulator isn't even perfect, this is 100% the same as the original, but with potential to make it even better. But for nintendo to put something like this on their console would imply they give a shit about their fanbase that pays for their games

This cannot be understated. Nintendo fricking HATES their fanbase, and Nintendo fricking HATES their customers, and Nintendo fricking HATES the people who play their games. The only thing Nintendo likes are money and their IPs

I don't know if they actively hate them, but they clearly don't give a shit about them and know they don't need to give a shit about them. Hating them would be way more effort than they even need to give

They actively thwarted all Smash Melee tournaments, while also not supporting Melee themselves. They were copyright striking people's YouTube let's plays back in the day unless the creator gave like 60% of the profits of the video to Nintendo. They go out of their way to frick with people who enjoy their games, without even mentioning the romhackers and modders and stuff

I could never get into MM because of the time limit. It's too stressful. I ran out of time trying to find the five kids and had to redo the whole intro. Quit the game there.

You need to stop thinking of the timer as your enemy, its a tool. You should use it instead of trying to treat it like an obstacle to be beaten.

Having to memorize schedules, do things over and over, and constantly lose progress isn't for me. The only thing I really like in Zelda are the dungeons anyway, bashing my head against every NPC trying to figure out what random event flag will give me the trinket that gives me the bauble that gives me the doohickey that lets me get into the next dungeon is always the worst part.

So what are the odds the SOH gays will flag this for copyright on behalf of Nintendo?

      Anonymous

Doubtful. This may have beat them to the punch but it lacks the ability to easily add and remove features like the ship does.
SOH also got beaten to the punch with another decomp IIRC, but they won out in the end to the point I don't even fricking remember the other ports name.

        Anonymous

With OoT, that other port was done by a former SoH contributor they had a falling-out with (Zel, the guy who also spearheaded that Spaceworld 1997 recreation hack) and it was a pretty hacky port for the time (especially its implementation of higher framerates). Here, this is no doubt going to catch Harbor Masters off guard since it's an actually competent offering (even if lacking Ship's extremely granular options) while they've been dickteasing 2Ship2Harkinian for months... I fricking HATE that they actually stuck with that name, especially since pretty much everyone told them it sucks and they defiantly keep saying "no frick you we're keeping it this way". They didn't even at least go with a different CDi-based name either.

But what of it? Nothing decent came out, and no one did anything with it.
It's the same with MM. People will hype up everything about it but everyone will be too lazy to do anything with it.

Its mostly the fault of the SOH developers prioritizing meme updates instead of cleaner mod support.

      Anonymous

Just for the fact that it is 100% native code of the original running on pc with no bugs (unlike emulators) and has uncapped framerates already makes it worth it. Not to mention the tons of improvements the oot port has, like one little example being twin stick full camera conteol, despite you claiming nobody did anything with it

      Anonymous

That's because SoH is still hard as hell to do anything with for some stupid reason. That's far more on SoH than any modder.

People who played PS1 grew up and moved on with their lives. It was the normalgay console. Grown men who are still interested in Nintendo have autism to end all autism. It's inline with all the Mario speedrunning and 20 hour video essays on half an A press shit.
