Mario was decompiled by hand though and they were do documenting the code as they decompiled it to understand it and how to work with it better, same with oot. This program does it by itself so it will create a native pc port, but the code won't be understood and will need to be documented, so it's working backwards in a way. We end up with a playable product right away, but the code needs to be parsed and documented now to be able to understand it and work with it

Shit's going to fall under the same legal grey area as emulation. You need a readily available Majora's Mask ROM rather than a debug version and ripping N64 ROMs can be done without compromising security of a console.
The SM64 PC port was only 'taken down' by Nintendo DMCAing pre-built versions.

MM3D has the Happy Mask Salesman just hand it to you.

the whole point of this is to turn N64 roms into actual native pc games, basically the same done with SM64 and OoT, but actually faster and with (arguably) any n64 game. but you already knew that, dont you?

It will be possible in time as long as someone documents the code, which I'm sure will happen for at least zelda. Hell it's already going on with 2ship,but idk if their code translates to this one

Nerrels video cites the indiana jones game and battle for naboo, which uses rogue squadrons engine. So its possible rogue squadron is also borked out of the box.

Lucasarts did made many of the games of that era mainly for PC, so yeah, not really a loss.

                These games:

                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boss_Game_Studios

supposedly, the practice of making custom microcode, mainly for graphics managing and effects, was done on the last stretch of the N64's life. we can only hope to see what people do, or if people do anything at all, specially since the tools arent made for the average user and have to be compiled manually.

Its pretty much impossible to do it without interpolation. Even SoH uses interpolation because fricking everything is hard coded to the frame rate. Console devs still do this shit btw and is why PC ports are so god awful all the time.

This is unironically why the Japanese are based. They don't give a shit about Western "ways of doing things properly", and just do what actually works. Because of this, they end up with tight control over how their games actually work frame by frame, which results in them looking and feeling way better to actually play.

Theoretically eventually i guess, but no not yet

Mario was decompiled by hand though and they were do documenting the code as they decompiled it to understand it and how to work with it better, same with oot. This program does it by itself so it will create a native pc port, but the code won't be understood and will need to be documented, so it's working backwards in a way. We end up with a playable product right away, but the code needs to be parsed and documented now to be able to understand it and work with it

The code is not documented yet

Low quality remakes is actually a pretty good argument. Nintendo doesn't want to make them too good for their rental service otherwise nobody will buy the full price ports they put minimal effort into.

The Nerrel video makes it sound like this is easy to do for other N64 games, but I'm confused. It sounds like it's only easy if the other game is already decompiled, but they also show off Superman 64.
Personally, I want Sin and Punishment badly.

      Anonymous

It's easy well not that easy, you still need to use a disassembler and know some basics of how these things work to make a basic port, just something that runs and has resolution scaling/widescreen. To do more stuff you need to figure out what code does what, and that code isn't written in a way that is easily readable, so having already decompiled source code will greatly help.

      Anonymous

This lets you create a PC port of a game without needing a decompilation. However, it doesn't give you readable code; decompilations are still valuable for modding and reference.

No good game has ever looked close to its concept art and for good reason. Not that Grezzo garbage even looks like the concept art in the first place anyway.

original artwork was based on the game and not the other way around. That makes the 3ds assets soulless because of being through the regurgitation pipeline

It is what it is, Koizumi produced his models for OoT and the "official art" was based on the models he made, same for MM. MM's Link design was closer to OoT's child link art for this reason, because that art came after Koizumi already designed the model for OoT

I hated BotW, but I could understand that it had potential and there was a foundation there to create something good next time.
And then TotK came out and Aonuma opened his mouth and proved what many suspected all along, that he is a clueless hack who couldn't care less about the series and just used it as a vehicle to add whatever his kid liked at the time. And Fujibayashi the fanfiction headcanon loving weeb isn't any better.

Yeah i was coping hard that they had just spent way too long making the engine and groundwork with botw into something that is admittedly something very impressive and great and that they just had to ship something because time and budget was running out, and that totk could have the foundation for them to actually make a zelda game with it. But it was a major slap in the face to see they didn't really do shit in terms of actual content again and nothing at all in terms of a zelda adventure feel and no actual dungeons again. I had fun in botw as a tech demo, but not again

That hurts. It'd be fantastic if Mario autists were able to use this as a launching off point to give Mario Party proper online
    >this tool will give even the most obscure games a second life
    >shows Rocket: Robot on Wheels
That's mean, but I guess it's apt. If people knew about that game, they'd stop sucking off Half-Life 2 for implementing physics only ever so slightly into gameplay

I'm too zoomer to watch the rest. Will this also work on romhacks or does that fall into what he mentioned on microcode forcing into LLE mode. I vaguely remember people saying a similar thing as to why a lot of SM64 hacks (namely Kaze's) can't easily be ported to the existing SM64EX port, so it'd be a shame if that was still the case (albeit I guess not too much of a problem for games that don't have 60FPS versions)

      Anonymous

You're right, but this tool makes it so the games runs native 100% same code on pc, so no bugs like you get on emulators. And most importantly uncapped framerates, that alone makes it all worth it. Documenting the code and getting modding capabilities is amazing, but that's just gravy on an already amazing thing

      >It'd be fantastic if Mario autists were able to use this as a launching off point to give Mario Party proper online

if you think about it, that's what it might happen. originally, people had to wait for the decomp to be completed before working on a port, here, the port is done, or at least the basis.

with said basis, there might be people and programmers actually interested in working and tinkering with the generated ports and try to improve them, since the heaviest work will be done already. but again, its just wishful thinking here.

I think it's actually easier because there's less input lag, even though I'm using a fairly laggy Switch Pro controller.

Fun fact, the Japanese version's timer ran with two significant digits, so you actually needed to get 10.00 instead of just 10.0. Which was impossible to do reliably because of subframe timing.

Bro, do you even know the game you're talking about? Nothing about Majora's Mask was "padded with nostalgia" except working in the older Zelda overworld theme which OoT skipped out on. And it's a pretty different
formula to OoT outside of Link's basic control scheme, and a couple mainstays like bombs. The whole groundhog day thing is anything but a rehash.

You really think the time traveling mechanic is interesting? It's a fricking gimmick. It plays the same and uses a lot of assets from OoT. It was an easy cash grab and using the groundhog day shit was an excuse to make the entire game incredibly small.

With a decomp you have access to the source code so you can modify the game in absolutely anyway you want. In this case the source code isn't in an easily readable state so people will have to go through it to document functions and rewrite it so it'll be easier to figure out and modify.

            >Interpolated animations do look shitty and plastic at higher framerates
why? is the tech just not good enough yet?

              Anonymous

No, it's not about the tech, much like how you can get away with lower details at lower resolutions, you can get away with less detailed animations at lower framerates, animations have a physicality and weight to them, and a lack in that aspect is more visible when you can see more frames

                Anonymous

You're missing something important. The animations don't simply 'get away with' less detail, such that they just happen to look solid despite (or rather because of) how few frames there are, they look good precisely because each frame is deliberately crafted and presented to make the animations look good at the framerate at they are.

This typically doesn't matter for, say, most FPS games, because FPS games tend to have shiftily incorporated animations because it's a genre where people accept that character's limbs are just going to be flailing around and don't care so much, so as long as shit "looks good enough" at high FPS, in a FPS, people accept that.

Zelda, on the other hand, actually has good, deliberately thought out and presented animation, so when you just haphazardly add frames via interpolation, it degrades the quality of thought put into each frame.

          Anonymous

I don't really "get it" on a deeper level since I'm tech-illiterate, but it seems to come down to sacrificing quality for speed, the tool's creator has had working betas of MM, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, and Superman 64 for a while but has only now released a pre-build(exe) of Majora which he had to polish (which is still faster than waiting for it's decomp which still isn't done) in ways that regular decomps don't have to deal with. In regards to this one, all the basic improvement features like widescreen and high framerates are already in, shit like randos and texture pack support is being worked on along with raytracing (fricking n64 games with raytracing). The goal seems to be to give a wider range of people the tools to make their own ports without having to wait for full decomps.

            Anonymous

            >I don't really get it on a deeper level
from what I gather, a static recompilation is original source code from the game, translated via some third party software into executable code that your computer can understand. a decomp is when someone, a group of people, painstakingly, by hand, manually, recreates the original code from scratch by reading the original code and adapting it into C++ or whatever language can be used by the compiler to make a native version.

in essence, this version is actively interpreting the native code in real time and this is the translation. a decomp removes this step, there is no translation because it's all been written and built into a workable program.

This is awesome, and it could lead to some pretty juicy developments. Here's hoping we get more ports like this.
When it comes to MM's, are there plans for further enhancements like texture replacement?
Also, are there any plans to employ this tactic on games from other platforms or will the guy stick to the N64's catalog specifically?

100%, it's part of the roadmap at the end of the creator's trailer in the op, alongside randos, mods. and his own OoT port, his buddy is even working on raytracing.

You'll probably get a recomp Paper Mario PC port before a decomp one. Dunno why they bothered with the decomp, jack shit has been done with it in terms of speedrun glitch research or modding that hadn't already been achieved before the decomp began.

I don't remember the save format that N64 emulators use, but fwiw, the saves are in "C:UsersAnonAppDataLocalZelda64Recompiledsaves".

    >not the 3ds remake.
No thanks, the blocky models are worse than FF7. Bad models in high def and wide screen are still bad models.

zoomer/tardism aside "modding" and "texture replacement" would cover model replacement, and even then citra would be good enough for a simpleton like you.

    >OoT
    >Quadruple damage.
    >Bottomless pits instantly kill.
    >Enemies don't drop hearts.
    I love SoH customization.

Ocarina of Time is a really easy game even with quadruple damage and no health drops. All these changes do is make it actually matter if you get hit, aswell as make potions more important.

are the fairies nerfed to not full heal you on death? it made potions less useful when you could visit a fairy fountain and fill up for free instead of spending hundreds of rupees on potions

You can change it as you wish in the Ship of Harkinian options. Everything I mentioned was just my personal custom attempt at making a hard mode for OoT.
I'm pretty sure I nerfed fairies to revive you with only 3-5 hearts or something like that.

Probably a good move, fairies are overpowered in OoT and make red potions pointless.

Unironically I am pogfacing over this. Games are so trash now and I've played Ocarina of Time every way for the past 25 years and the PC port was the best. Now it's time for MM. Never played the 3DS version, nerfing the zora swimming seems like a humanitarian crime.
