be fricking honest. a song in the game SHOULD BE A SAVE STATE instead of the stupid fricking owl saves which are USELESS. even if you can only play the song once a day/ or cycle, and it's used up when you die/ play the song once more. but that would be too god damn good.

        How are they useless?

They're only at warp points, they only temporarily save and then delete.
They're completely fixed in 3DS version. They placed some statue save points inside dungeons thoughtfully, so you could save and stop whenever (it's a handheld game!!) and it's permanent so you don't have to frick about with those USELESS owl saves from the original.

As I said, those temporary saves could/should have been a song you could play instead, anywhere. Save and quit out/ if you die without a fairy it warps you back to it.

and ditch Elegy of Emptiness for the Cane of Somaria, a c button item that makes a block per each transformation mask. What were they thinking.

            >They're only at warp points, they only temporarily save and then delete.
Yes, they save your progress so you can stop playing for a while, but do so in a way that you can't easily abuse them mid-cycle by deleting itself once you start the file up again
            >They're completely fixed in 3DS version
Nothing was "fixed" in the 3DS version
            >They placed some statue save points inside dungeons thoughtfully,
At the entrances to dungeons... each of which have a normal owl statue right outside
            >As I said, those temporary saves could/should have been a song you could play instead, anywhere
No. Stop being a baby. Save points have existed for years
            >Save and quit out/ if you die without a fairy it warps you back to it.
Just go to an owl statue. Also why are you dying in Majora's Mask?

nobody used owls in the original. statues were how you save only in 3DS. there's more of them, and they were placed better.
also Elegy of Emptiness being played to make a block, and switching between forms and replaying the song over and over, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING.

People absolutely used owls in the original. You are moronic
Elegy of Emptiness could have been streamlined, but replacing it with the Cane of Somaria would be moronic and miss the point. Just have a quick play button for it once it's been played in the room/dungeon, leaving the actual mechanics for it in tact

number one problem with that is that it leads to to much of a disconnect between fans, everyone who's owned an N64 has played Mario 64, but not everyone with a psx has played Crash and Spyro. N64 despite being the loser has an edge in nostalgia due to the smaller library and being the dedicated multiplayer machine. Depends how you look at it. It has a lot of flaws that aren't obvious unless you're into actual hardware/software nerd shit, and in some ways it's a worse console than N64 and even the Sega Saturn.

        >Why does it inspire so little passion compared to N64 projects?
Because there's a gorillion different ways to play PS1 games. Most of the ones the modern gamer would bother nowadays have long since gotten ports/remakes/remasters to other platforms, and accurately emulating PS1 games is way less of a hassle compared to N64 games. Not to mention, you could play PS1 games on a PS2, PS3, PSP, Vita, or PSTV using the official emulator/backwards compatibility too. If somebody wants to play N64 games, they don't have anywhere near as many options to do so, and in almost all instances they're vastly superior than playing them on real hardware.

Now for a real answer, all Playstation hacking groups have been full of scammers, dicks, attentionprostitutes, sekrit club fanatics, among other backstabbers.

Nintendo hackers usually share everything between themselves.
Playstation hackers would rater give the data to Sony than make it public just to make other groups angry, for example the PSVita hacking scene was trash for years till someone accidentally leaked stuff and others picked up from there, Yifanlu and other "devs" did their best to stop PSVita hacking scene and scam the most money possible out people.
PS4 hacking and developing scene only advanced thanks to fricking random brazilians.
PS2 groups were always fighting between each other.
PS1 groups did fine for a while till the console became irrelevant thanks to the PS2, after that all groups left tried to make the most money possible out modchips and stuff like PSIO.

though to make matters worse, the hype for AC died anyway. Even most normal people just stopped caring after they realized what nintendo's capable of: disappointing them.
Saw a good chunk of girls going straight for the AC's they have nostalgia for, but it doesn't really last long since there's other shit to play.
Hey though if one dedicated autist out there has the means to make it happen, then sure it's realistic to assume itll happen this year thanks to the tools here.

It is that easy. Read that again. TOML is just a file type like YAML or JSON. You can provide next to nothing. And all someone has to do is do it once. Same with the metadata

It's not that seamless. You might run into errors compiling that that you'll have to fix yourself. There also may be some bugs that need to be manually patched on a per game basis. But basically 95% of the work is there compared to a decompilation so it's still incredibly cool. Over the next 10 years I'd imagine this process phasing out emulation entirely since it's just superior.

        >Currently, the only way to provide the required metadata is by passing an elf file to this tool. The easiest way to get such an elf is to set up a disassembly or decompilation of the target binary
What does he mean by this? How do you generate an elf file from a disassembler in a way this will accept? I believe I have everything else set up for basic usage but I'm stuck here.

the two days part was implementing some fixes and systems with special bytecode (special instructions that aren't accounted for in regular recomp). the actual port generates in a few seconds and literally works with any game.

Makes sense. Modern video cards are designed to run with modern graphics protocols. You also gain the ability to use modern shaders. Older DX versions are a meme. If Linux has to use a modern renderer like Vulkan anyways, then you might as well use DX12 on Windows.

TLJ is the only inventive part of the sequel trilogy and the only one that isnt trying to retread the OT. It fails to stick the landing but if JJ and Kathleen had any imagination 7 wouldnt just be a new hope and 9 wouldnt be botched return of the jedi. Anyone who tries to shitpile on TLJ should first admit that 7 and 9 are worse. Remember the 20 minute space octopus scooby doo chase scene?

I love how this shit just utterly frustrates some anons to the point of them throwing genuine temper tantrums.

TROS was indeed a worse movie, but you're giving way too much of a pass to TLJ just for being LE HECKIN DIFFERINO. Can you really, in earnest, say that the movie that
        >utterly wrecked Luke's character arc with no buildup for it
        >destroyed any last chance for Finn to be relevant or serious
        >gave us Mary Sue Holdo and all the incredibly moronic baggage with her character
        >opened with a fricking "yo momma" joke

"Credit where credit is due/It's good because it's different" doesn't apply to that draining movie.
It's not written well. The pacing is god awful. The message is moronic. Characters suck. Luke's a coward.
Why'd they show his X-wing, alluding to him flying to Salt Planet to look all badass?
Rose risked the lives of her remaining comrades all to give a dude a kindergarten PECK on the lips for God's sake -- how could anyone watch that scene and NOT bust a fricking guy in laughter?

        >Forced reddit comedy
        >Ends with no hook for the end of the trilogy
It failed as a sequel and as a middle of trilogy movie, simple as.
I blame JJ and Kathleen way more, since they should have made a 3 movie plan from the very beginning. But TLJ isn't really good either.

PS1 games are also generally a lot weirder due to the dithering and warping textures and shit. I might be wrong but it seems like even if you fully decompiled some ps1 games theyd still require a lot of work to get looking 'right' on modern systems at resolutions besides native

PS1 emulators nowadays have options for warping correction and texture filtering, so if recomps ever happened for PS1 games, I'd expect those to be options there too.

just gunna post this here since it's not working elsewhere:

"you know what I hate so much about ocarina of time? it's such a shit overrated game, but for some stupid reason, when I was younger, very young, I used to obsessively read legend of Zelda manga, like I'd legit reread the books over and over again because my mom would never buy me new ones, and when I found new ones at the library I would rejoice.

something about my brain still contains that little kid, and sometimes when I see ocarina of time, like in the context of this video, I get the urge to want to play it, and live out my childish fantasies of going on an arduous adventure as link, beating bad guys with my sword in my left hand and shield in my right, smartly using the right tool to solve whatever problem or obstacle is in my way to get past...

but I've given the game so many tries on my 3DS and simply cannot understand. Cannot understand how this game is considered the best game of all time.

I've wondered if Zelda games simply aren't for me and that my child dreams are greater than the games could ever be....but here's the think...I love minish cap and it's one of my favourite games ever. It is LITERALLY the game that brought me back into videogames.

But everybody shits on that game. And I almost didn't want to mention it in anticipation of the fact that people would dismiss my dislike of OoT as "bad" taste despite how robust my arguments against it are. But I mentioned it to show that I don't hate Zelda inherently. I think Minish cap just has a lot of creative ideas and approaches to exploration that feels satisfying. I'd argue the over world is almost sort of a puzzle in itself but anyway I'm rambling now.

I can't imagine anybody would care, but I'm just sharing my feelings because this is what came to mind when I saw this. That I wish Ocarina of Time was the Zelda game that my fantasies as a child sparked by the manga made it seem like they'd be."

      Anonymous

added context for why more specifically I found OoT bad:

"I do GENUINELY believe it's bad, but people have different standards to me and tend to think bad means...I don't know? bad optimization or a game being of a specific type i.e. "moviegame". But to me "bad" is simple unjustified gameplay, gameplay that doesn't utilize its mechanics interestingly, thoughtfully or to its base potential.

No puzzles require a deeper or renewed understanding of ones tools. Level design can generally be reduced to "go to every non locked door till you find a key". Maybe that's it. Maybe the reason I like Minish cap is that it has so many memorable distinct mechanics that wowed me in how well they were used, or considered. Things like making mirror copies to fight the final boss. Or having to go tiny mode to fight a small dungeon boss. It feels creative,it doesn't just feel like rock paper scissors "the fire melts the ice to get the key" or whatever.

Anyway I don't have much expectations asking this but if you're familiar (or not I guess, I'm just curious anyway) with the manga, which Zelda game do you think best embodies the fantasies of that? Or just does it best?"

hm really? I feel like with how subpar the quality of the first half dungeons are, im not sure if latter dungeons could save it but, frick it man maybe I'll give it another shot lol, I'm just EXTREMELY skeptical. You can emulate N64 games well enough but it's never going to achieve true accuracy. Right now it's similar to Dolphin before it added Depth Matrix Shader Accuracy in version 5.0, the scene still hasn't made that particular breakthrough yet and it doesn't look like it ever will since now everything's steering towards decompiling roms .

The part of the overworld that leads to a dungeon has a bit of a dungeon vibe to it, without it being exactly like a dungeon. The game centers on sidequests, each tying to a unique character. Dungeons are timed, so when you get the item there's a natural point of being able to save and quit out to resume later, and there's an additional side object to them collecting faeries.

If i had to surmise MM, it's a consolidated OoT Master Quest / Second Quest version. Not to say it's just a rendition or reiteration; but that it's a whole sequel that is folded back in on itself. pretty novel
(there's four dungeons, but the lead up to dungeons make it more like 8, which is the exact same amount in OoT go figure)

Hm. This part is actually interesting, I just hope the puzzles and all feel decent and creative like MC, and that the exploration feels...idk satisfying for lack of better word. I can't really have much expectations there when it comes to Zelda beyond that.

Interestingly enough I've heard TOTK described as this too. That "the lead up to the dungeon is like part of the dungeon". At that point, the distinguishing factor would have to be the dungeons itself.

Little tip: Talk to NPCs and pay attention to what they say.
The game is based around immersing you in its world, empathizing with its characters and you learn about the game's quirks/hints/secrets interacting with them. The game has a lot of small details that you won't pick up on your first time through, so a guide will be helpful if you're REALLY stuck on something.

and don't get me wrong, your tastes might be different but generally I find all but 2 of the adult dungeons to be a lot of fun. The overworld is definitely weak in the games (ALttP and OoT) and will lack that sort of cohesion as a sort of puzzle like you described before. The game that does that better than OoT is Link's Awakening imo. Majora's Mask is a fun twist too and might be more up your alley as well if you haven't tried that one.

I have zero idea how such a stupid group of people gets to thinking they're so right constantly. added context for why more specifically I found OoT bad:

      TL;DR
      >Early 3D game in franchise bad because I was spoiled by 2D successor in franchise a console generation later first and let hype color my perception of its merit and is the reason why I trooned out
This is his "robust arguments" against OOT as he claims.

No, that's a decomp. This is a new generic recomp tool in development. This tool aims to be a generic program that you can put any N64 rom into and it immediately spits out a PC native port with basic features like arbitrary frame rates and resolutions.

A decomp is far better on a technical level and will open WAYYYY more options for modification but a generic recomp tool like this means you can, when it's finished, play any and all N64 games at 60 FPs at 4K without any errors.

The OoT PC port (Ship of Harkinian) has a 3DS model+texture pack and its Majora's Mask decomp is making good progress (won't be done for a while), we'll get it eventually

people keep asking this for some reason, but it doesn't require a "port", it's on wiseguy to implement texture support at all, and then it will run with any texture pack as it does in emulators. It's the same with romhacking once that is also implemented.

          >nerrel hd pack, flss, ray tracing, and frame gen
ray tracing is especially exciting for me, because just adding shadows and reflections to the game will make it look nice. i wonder if people can add pbr support, so we can have different materials in the game, like link's sword reflecting light, or a mirror finish on the mirror shield.

imagine shilling for shitty sterile HD texture packs for emulations but not being ok with official nintendo loving remake with new better quality 3D models and art

the N64 game is NOT timeless. It's too low poly. If you add raytracing to the original it's gunna look like dogshit because the few polygons will cast really bad shadows across all the acute surfaces.

3DS version is the right kind of low poly. If you added some shader redo's and made it get a painterly 2D/cel shaded + raytraced artstyle you could get majora's to unironically match the concept art of the original game.

We need better instructions on how to start the process for other N64 games using the recomp tool and see which games "just work" and which ones need actual effort. Then start hammering on the titles that really need it. I have a feeling Paper Mario and the Pokemon Stadium games are going to need some special shit.

      Anonymous

Yeah, this is all I got so far:
For the entrypoint: open the ROM in Ghidra with the N64LoaderWV extension and analyze, click on .ram in program trees (top left box), entrypoint is the first offset.
To make an .elf it seems you have to decompile the ROM (so in ghidra export to .c, or download an existing decomp project) then compile it to an .elf. I haven't gotten this to work though.

Paper Mario has already been decompiled so any special bytecode not done by recomp can be reimplemented pretty easily

So how does the n64 compiler tool work? I downloaded the Zip and there is no executables at all and in true fashion the homosexual has no proper instructions for people who dont program. I wanna try compiling some n64 games to be PC native damn it.

      Anonymous

you have to compile the tools manually, about how to use? you need to prepare a special file to feed the tools alongside the rom.

      this guy:

Yeah, this is all I got so far:

is also trying his hand into using the tools, but the truth is that you will need to be quite a programmer to fully use the tools and to make at least one working exe.

Ocarina and Time and Majora's Mask were both completely decompiled to make this happen, you can't "just" do this. The OoT decompilation project took several years with dozens of contributors who are deeply familiar with assembly code, the game and the N64's hardware. Majora's Mask isn't even done yet, but the code that has been decompiled so far probably helped in making this PC executable

NTA but the reshade version of CRT royale is complete garbage. It looks nothing like default royale in retroarch, and requires a lot of tinkering. But even so you'll never get rid of fricked up chromatic aberration or whatever it is in the reshade port. The best part is that CRT royale itself isn't even the best shader out there.
