I have but that doesn't make it the greatest year in gaming. I've had a game I've loved in probably every single year. I'll defeinitely agree that this is probably the best year gaming has had for a solid while, maybe even this decade but ever? Eh, that's a stretch. 2009 is still probably king for my zoomer ass.
For real, there's this growing trend in psychology that's related to this. Basically, there are a fuck ton of Millennials and Gen Zs who are reaching their 20s and 30s who are falling out of video games and other types of media who are doing everything they can to blame the shit around them for it. Either it's the industry, or it's the games, or it's the fandoms, they will lash out and blame everything and everyone they can. But when it's all stripped away and these people are left to sort themselves out they usually realize that it's them to blame. They themselves have just moved on and they don't want to. This is the result of the weird lifelong fandom shit we've been cultivating for decades, eventually the people in these fandoms will move on and then they don't have anything. They don't feel like anything is as good as the thing they remember but that's because they themselves just don't realize they don't like this shit anymore. It's sad, but also like a series of train wrecks. It's super hard to look away. Some people redirect this anger and hit the fandoms they were once a part of in hopes of not straying too far from places that they've known (in some cases) their entire lives.
Again, sad but kind of impossible to stop looking at once you realize what's happening. This shit is super easy to hide too, though. Because sometimes these people will slip themselves in with groups that have legitimate complaints about stuff. That makes shit hard.
I agree with you partially, but truth be told there are no major advancements in tech or gameplay like in 90s-2000s, so if you have played games for the past 10-20 years, you basically have done all videogames have to offer. Generally speaking we are in the culture of the remake because there is nowhere else to go(just look at the industry size with absurd budgets and the amount of games that come out in steam every day)

Indies already had their peak when they were recognised for a lot of great, interesting games - Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac, AI War, Klei games like Don't Starve, Frozen Synapse, Spelunky, Terraria... like 2009-2013, maybe up to 2015 was the "golden age" for indies I think when they've released many great games and seemed to understand that since they don't have the budgets, capabilities or reputation of gaming giants they have to make up for it with style, presentation and interesting ideas. But then indies started getting drowned I way too much praise and toxic positivity and the whole scene just became 95% shovelware trash, maybe 5% a genuinely good game because people just worship the "OMG A SMALL STUDIO MADE THIS :OOOO" concept without caring about actual quality. Sure, indies do still have some gems, but it doesn't compare at all to how it used to be. When was the last time several instant classics were going to go head to head for GOTY? TOTK and Baldurs Gate 3 would have been a remarkable enough year, but Armored Core 6, Pikmin 4, and Pizza Tower are honest competitors in my eyes, with Mario Wonder likely to join.
For fucks sake anon We're finally seeing games smooth out all the HD growing pains of the last two generations and settle back into more well refined and complex game systems with things like the building in TOTK and a CRPG being one of THE mainstream release of the year. Even Starfield which is pretty ass definitely does return to the more complex roots of Bethesda games, the Daggerfall comparison is apt, even if it doesn't make Starfield good. Many beloved series are getting attention that they haven't gotten in ages like Baldurs Gate, Pikmin, and Homestar Runner, while new IPs like Pizza Tower, Wizard With a Gun and Psuedoregalia also pop up. All the while several bad games and companies are getting justifiably roasted over an open fire for their bad releases contrasted against such a good year. Including several developer ending catastrophes like Forspoken and Gollum. All the while Blizzard, Sony, and Square Enix have had the full effect of their ruined reputation catch back up with them as they have become obvious sinking ships.
This year has been a fucking ride of new topics organically appearing on the board every week or every other week because that much fucking shit was happening and coming out. It's been a fucking remarkable year. Not all positive, but certainly incredibly interesting

That obviously wore off quick, but I'd still say the first half of the game did circles around its competition last year. A buggy, unfinished open world dark souls considered the GOAT, even if temporarily. Skyrim is a multi-generational beacon of "quality", because there's simply nothing decent since. That's the industry.
Other than that, what's there to really say? Games are past their creative peak, and the modern socio-political climate now makes it a business centered on churning out slop for pigs, like what happened to movies beforehand.
Theoretically, games could stop being made today, and the sheer backlog of content for people to discover is so endless that it would still have a respectable presence. Saturation is absurd.
It's little wonder people expect a crash, but much like current economics, nothing is allowed to truly "die" anymore. It's all propped up, and that's how you get things like Cyberpunk and Starfield barely even being vetted.

I beat BG3 on Sep 3 on tactician with 198 hours played. And I finished RE4 remake like in late July. It took tremendous motivation to finish that one.
I beat FF16 ng in about 3 weeks, also felt like a slog to beat. 37 hours of it was just straight cutscene watching.
I can’t comprehend the RE4 hype. I got bored halfway through. Such a massive downgrade from the original.

There are still a ton of great games releasing, I struggle to think of a year where I haven't had at least one cool new game to enjoy. This year alone I've liked:

When it first started I had a fascination with overwatch league, not so much the game itself but their plans, structure, and whatnot. Anyway the players involved in that would have to practice the game for incredible amounts of time a week, it's been forever since I paid attention to that shit so im kinda pulling numbers out of my ass here but im thinking upwards of 50 hours with the chinese teams pushing over 70. And that's without the insane idea of flying them all over city to city going into full effect. I mean sure it's better than being a rice picker but after a certain point anyone who enjoyed that to the fullest is gonna get sick to death of it, day in and day out playing a video game with a slew of coaches standing over you for 10 hours a days. That's why anyone with half a personality and two braincells to rub together immediately went to go stream instead.
The moment playing or completing games becomes a job that you just feel compelled to do it's no longer fun

AAA games have really degraded since 2014 or so (or when games as service became a popular model) - there are no new titles or ideas. Most big games right now are either sequels (both literal, or spiritual like fromsoft makind dark souls in Japan and dark souls finger but whole) or some new ip which gets sidelined because it's boring (flopspoken, redflop, that one game from dishonored devs about a bro in a time loop) or have an interesting pricing where base game (>50% of the content) costs 60$ and dlcs for it cost 1000$ without adding anything substantial. And there is also the fact that thanks to cloud services companies can release unfinished games riddled with bugs, cut content, pre-made dlcs, pre-order bonuses which include 2 retextures which are download ed onto your disk anyway and you don't have access to it just because.
Smaller games are either copy of some game from 90s with only difference being using more than 8 colours (and being made by people who use Twitter as main way of socializing) or they never progress from the early access stage.
Even sequels to more recent games (ie bannerlord) are hardly an improvement since the only thing which was improved was visual presentation.

Saying 2023 is the greatest year for gaming ever is a bit much, but those videos are retarded. Far Cry 6 not being worth your time should be something you expect at this stage, not something that signals the death of videogames.

AAA games are somehow good again but indie games have become goyslop now.
It's amusing to me how the games listed by some anons here are somehow considered to be great. It only speaks to the consistently declining standards over the years when the great games of today would be considered mediocre at best when compared to the mid 2000s. 2023 only looks good because expectations have fallen so low over the years, don't pat yourself on the back for having one upwards trend.

1998 and 2001 are my personal best years but 2023 was fantastic and if you disagree you just don't like games anymore. And that's fine but kindly fuck off.
1998 and 2001 were also my favorite years however I don't think 2023 is very good simply because the "good" games released aren't appealing to me specifically. BG3 does and is very enjoyable but that's it.
Remakes don't do anything for me because I still own the originals.
