Seriously, i was a fan of RTS games but now i cant help but vomit, what strtegy and tactics you find in AoE, SC or warcraft really but metagayging, cheezing and sending blobs. And how much of suspension of disbelief their arcady gameplay requires?
What use did Total War make of it's system in what, 20 years already? try using anything resembling real tacics and you will loose for this game is little more sofisticated than all the other blob simulators i mentioned above and last positive assumptions of what gameplay with thousands of soldiers marching in formations would look like shatter the moment armies engage, they were on the right track with shogun 2, but insted of developing further they regressed farther back than the place where they started.
DoW 1 is outdated, not as much in graphics, but design philosophy,like the first group i talked about, and it's sequels are barely an rts and an utter failure.
CoH is decent, especially first one with some mods
Steel division and simmilar wargames are too unimmersive, what fun it is to look at markers on the map
Assault squad 2 on the other hand has deep and to an extent realistic gameplay that compromises relatively little for a rather and immersive and pleasant visual demontration, reulting in engaing expirience as no other. Especially visuals will shine in the upcoming sequels as it seems, overcoming it's more mainstream counterpart-CoH

There is an iron harvest mod for gates of hell, try it instead, original IH is so clucky, slow and poorly balanced i could barely enjoy it.

if you havent already, gates of hell ostfront is also worth to check out. a lot of the AS2 people moved on to that while waiting for men of war 2 (which hopefully will be good)
I have only recently begun playing AS2, and currently trying out it's glorious mods like UMW40K(That mogs every warhammer game that existsbtw) Vietnam. Valor: cold war/just cold war, Rboz realism, ultimate star wars and gunpowder warfare one.
Modding scene is just incredible, official level overhauls for a relatively modern game, how do they do it?
yeah theres plenty of fun to be had with AS2, gates of hell is only the eastern front so only germany, ussr and finland are in the game atm (there are other faction mods of course)
if you enjoy robZ realism mod for AS2 you should know that he is directly working on gates of hell, and is one of the main developers on it

I had one moment with the stupid amount of enemies at one particular location which I forget, where a dozen enemies were running down a corridor and I had a well placed man with an MG34 prone at the end of that corridor, the sweeping back and forward arc of fire is quite fun

Some semblance of a single player campaign, like in the earlier games, would bring these games back to life.

>struggle for a bit to take the left outpost
>secure it and go after the center
>fail horribly
>try to regroup
>tiger that I knocked the right track off of is just sitting there blasting all my reinforcements as they spawn
>cant get close enough with a bazooka
>mortar out of range anywhere they have cover
>spend three hours sending rifle teams to die
>finally get an AT grenade on the engine and destroy it
>two more appear
It's been like a month and I've only captured the first two outposts
I fricking loved the coop stuff. Being able to download some impossible missions and spend nearly three hours on one map desperately trying to push forward was amazing.
A shame they moved away from story missions because I have very fond memories of the MoW campaigns. The transition from handling a small squad in the first Russian mission to then have to plan the defence of a train station with germans coming from multiple angles was amazing.

Gates of Hell Finnish campaign is fun.
yeah gates of hell has decent real singleplayer campaigns thats not just skirmish missions
they really fricked that part up in assault squad 2
