Yeah I played a game. Should've specified. It was Mario Kart, lol. Hadn't used my switch in like a month at the time and since sysnand looks identical to emu I didn't know I was still in cfw. This was around when wave 4 released I think and I only got banned recently. I was surprised I got banned for it though, I didn't use any mods nor have any pirated switch games or anything. Oh well, my Switch's fan was dead anyways so I couldn't really use the online anyways before it overheated in sub 20min. Gives me an excuse to just pirate everything now. But yeah, always make absolutely sure that you're on clean firmware before you go online I suppose would be the lesson from this.

Why is Wii Rainbow Road allowed to be its full original length but not N64 Rainbow Road? They should at least add custom settings so we can do a 9 lap race on N64 Rainbow Road and get the true experience.
Drivers can probably be largely swapped out in some cases if they're smart. Tour shows they can absolutely put more resources into drivers if they so wish.
Tracks is tricky. Either they do something really nuts with the track design or we might get a higher amount to start, like 40 or 48. Could also take a mix from Tour and Splatoon by promising a number of tracks post-launch. 32 solid tracks, but then you expand that to match 8 Deluxe in relatively short time.
I don’t doubt that. A lot of it is basically pasted over from Tour. It’s nothing truly new. I just don’t think Nintendo cares to do something like this again. I don’t know how they’ll top this and Smash Ultimate. Those games have a lot of content.

Next Smash is just going to be ultimate plus obviously. Mario Kart will be easy to top because all of these pass tracks are very unpolished and hastily thrown in. Play something from the new dlc and compare it to the base game tracks. It's night and day.
48 high quality from the ground up racetracks and everyone from 8DX and Tour returning would already be solid enough for next game's base content. Afterwards just have a DLC cycle like Wii U 8's, but longer.
We're not getting Mario Kart 9. Nintendo is just going to port 8D + Booster Pack to Switch 2, turn the logo on its side, call in Mario Kart Infinity, if you're lucky touch up the courses visually, add some new characters and vehicle parts from Tour.
Same thing is going to happen with Smash, I guarantee it.
Next one will be a crossover. I mean the next is the tenth in the series. To not call it Mario kart X and make each direct a hype reveal who’s in and what there course looks like is a major oversight. They then have more reign to ease other franchises into the spotlight next gen like star fox or heck more mother
Most of the characters are pallet swaps, current characters wearing a powerup or just filler.
Most of BP tracks are tour snorefests, slop retro tracks, or half garbage original tracks.

There's tons of shitty ass tracks on that dlc pack that should not be counted, but to answer your question. They'll probably do a similar strat with a 48 track base game and occasional dlc releases
The gimmick is that it's still mostly Mario Kart, but you can also play as Kirby, Link, Samus, Captain Falcon, etc and there are Nintendo Crossover tracks. One more cup than the standard 8 cups isn't that much extra work, but it gives MKX a reason to exist.
Oh yeah, and because Tour is MK9, the next Mario Kart could be MKX where the X is a reference to it being the 10th Mario Kart and also a crossover.

Mario Kart 9 has a long shadow to escape after this game. I feel Super Smash Kart is the only way to top this, where you get several more Nintendo brands involved, and maybe some third parties. Sonic already has a baked in racing series and All-Stars Transformed was one of the best racing games ever made.
But there are also a handful of tracks from Tour, original or remake, that were left out. Gotta leave something for future games. Piranha Plant Pipe seems to be a popular pick for a "retro" track next game.
Let Warioware get in before you bring in non Nintendo shit, besides you already got Smash for that. Better enjoy Ultimate before it’s kicked to the side when the next game comes out.
Same, I'd much prefer if Mario's extended series (RPG characters, WarioWare, more DK characters) got the spotlight before any other crossover characters came in. I'm glad they cut it off at AC+Zelda for the base game and Inkling for 8DX.
I'd be maaaaybe okay with Kirby joining the roster next game given he has his own iconic racing game/vehicles (Warp Star, Dragoon), but that's pretty much it.
Captain Falcon would probably be fine too since Blue Falcon's been a kart since Wii, as well as MK8 having two F-Zero tracks, but yeah I'd say cut it off at him and Kirby.

Half of the items the game gave me that race were golden mushrooms that kept throwing me off the track resulting in me doing badly resulting in the game giving me golden mushrooms. I'ma go do literally anything else.
I will say that whole some people think the cities from Tour can be flat, they're still way more involved than so many of the arcade tracks. Still can tell that main Mario Kart devs were on one game and not the other.

Sunset Wilds should not have been done if they couldn't do the transition. Imagine cutting brand new tracks and a first-time returning Gamecube track, but not a track whose fundamental gimmick couldn't work in 8 Deluxe. Yoshi Desert was right there too.
I will admit that after playing cheese land a lot I've come to appreciate a lot of the changes it brought from the original. Things such as the swiss-like holes in the ground you can trick off of or the sand blowing in the wind which brings the image of a smelly piece of cheese in the hot sun. I can understand being upset about the aesthetic changes from SC but I still think the 8 version stands strong on its own.

Bagging is just a consequence of the changed item logic MK8 uses which is why so many players abused it compared to previous MKs where it was less effective
Hope Nintendo just makes the item logic go back to how it used to be in all the previous games instead of using MK8

If you're on a losing streak, the game will sometimes throw you into lobbies with players who have much lower VR comparatively. So if you're in a lobby and there's just one or two guys who have high VR farming everyone else who have much lower VR, those guys were likely getting their asses beat not too long ago. 🙂

Meta matters even less after they hard balanced shit over the course of the DLC. Pretty much anything is viable now for racing. You only need to sweat hard and pick optimal meta shit if you're trying to go for the lowest times in time trials.
I wasn't talking about needing to sweat it out, I was just explaining why you see normal lobbies with like 6,000 VR players and then there's that one guy who joins with 80,000 VR who really doesn't need to be there.

I believe Borderlands 2 got a free dlc that tied into Borderland 3 before Borderland 3’s launch. I don’t know the year gap but I imagine it’s at least 5 years
Sad, I forget they made the tracks far wider to compensate for more drivers. What I liked about the GC version is how tight you have to make those turns coming down the mountain before the bridge. Feels like that's lost with a wider track.
DK Mountain and RR are really good but the rest is kinda meh. Bowser's Castle is alright but has a very simplistic layout. PPC is acceptable I guess, but Daisy's Circuit looks like shit and Rosalina's track is extremly mellow for the last cup. I loathe the city tracks at this point. Seeing the same design with the waving yoshi's on the side, it' depressing. Online is flooded with mediocre or bad tracks and I wonder if it was worth considering that every wave had at most 3 good tracks out of 8
Does the Rosalina's Ice World shortcut where you boost through the air and skip most of the loop thing at the start have potential to be used in the WR? The current WR doesn't do that.
I'd rather just say that Singapore Speedway, Athens Dash and maybe Vancouver Velocity are the only decent tracks, with everything else ranging from mediocre to downright bad. And it now hits me that we got a whooping 14 out of 48 Tour Tracks, meanwhile we only got 5 brand new tracks, one being the extremely mediocre Sky-High Sundae while Piranha Plant Cove was obviously designed with Tour in mind first.

No cope, how does the quality of the booster course tracks compare to the original DLC tracks? From a distance they look worse, a lot of phoned in filler stuff (especially ports from tour) dragging down the average and making the game worse than before - with a few fan favourite highlights thrown in to sweeten things. But that's from a distance, maybe I'm being too cynical.

So you'd say that the inclusion of the booster pass has dragged down the average quality of the tracks? If you're being given assigned a track at random then on average you'll be getting a worse track than you would before?
There's a huge difference in quality between the vanilla MK8 + DLC tracks and the Booster Pass, even disregarding the shitty graphical quality on a lot of them, you can see that they prioritized Tour tracks to the point Kalimari Desert and Piranha Plant Cove have the stupid arrows too. That's why Bowser's Castle 3 sticks out so hard, because that track almost feels like it should have been part of the base game with how well remade it was.
So yeah, it's not a good experience when half the time you'll have to pick between one or even two Tour tracks when playing online, and for some ungodly reason people like to pick trash like New York Minute or Tokyo Drift.
That's a shame, sounds like it's more or less as I expected and feared. Might still play through them sometime but I think they'd have been much wiser promising far fewer tracks and only including the ones that really merited inclusion. The original DLC tracks were generally great, better on average than the base game, they should have made sure to repeat that even if it meant far fewer tracks (and really who needs that many anyway? are most people really going to get to know all those tracks properly, especially when so many of them aren't worth getting to know?).

I'm just saying, the fact the some tracks were remade better than others has nothing to do with being a tour original. Literally every single course from the DLC was remade in Tour first, even stuff like Wii Rainbow Road. They just picked and choosed which ones to look nicer.
Weirdest thing is Sky High Sundae, Yoshi's Island, and Squeaky-Clean Sprint aren't listed as being from MK8 in Tour despite coming out a few days to month before. Meanwhile in MK8 the tracks from Tour that aren't based on a real-world location Merry Mountain, Ninja Hideaway, and Piranha Plant Cove aren't listed as being from Tour.

Lads, how do I recover my muscle memory? I picked up CTR:NF when it came out (which I still maintain is the superior kart racer) and the handful of times I've gone back to MK8 I've been completely unable to control the karts properly, everything just feels wrong.

They should have added a setting for how long it takes for item boxes to respawn.
I've always liked the strategy involved in trying to take item boxes so other people won't get them, or needing to maneuver to get a non-optimal item box.

Playing the time trials for 150 and 200 for each track respectively, on standard Mario with everything, 1st cup done
Not too into what that cup offers. Rome is whatever and for some reason I find it sort of hard to know where to head despite the arrows because everything looks so similar, unless I gave up all too quickly at the sight of these fences, they kinda butchered DK Mountain, I was excited to do the shortcut. That aside its still a bit wavy and learning to deal with that is neat enough. Daisy Circuit is Daisy Circuit, it wasn't a standout in Wii and it isn't here, the additions aren't too bad however, boost pads in the otherwise slow u turn make for a more dynamic layout especially on 200. Piranha Plant Cove is interesting if not flawed but it is surprisingly non linear for a track that's featured in Tour, I think following how good players play it will be most interesting out of the pack. However its riddled with boring straight away at times and its an underwater level for better or for worse (Probably the best utilisation of underwater since floaty physics enable potential shortcuts, hence my interest)

Rosalina's Ice World I had a soft spot on for its music but I neither like the remix all that much (lost a bit of its grace because of the instrumentation) and the track itself was never exceptional although the additional of a ramp at the end improves a track which was lacking in shortcuts.

I think it remains unchanged, but Yoshi Teddy Buggy will be more punishable now that the car got a huge nerf on Invincibility, and with the nerf to bagging they can't rely on cheesing races anymore. This also upsets me because they nerfed Inkstriker the same way which I was using with Inkling Girl, but oh well, maybe high rank races will stop relying so much on muh mini-turbo.
I have no strong feelings this wave so i'll go with Piranha Plant Cove for its potential.

MK8 is such a mixed bag for me. I wish they had kept some of the feel and mechanics from Wii because the series got sterilized hard in 7. 8 is just a better continuation of that.
yeah it felt like there was no quality control. the three GCN tracks seem like they have been made by an entirely different team because their quality differs so much from the garbage that the city tracks are. it's kinda inexcusable to have something as lame as Madrid or Rome after 6! waves with the same bland design. many of the tracks that are higher in my tier list are only there because the originals were so great. almost all MK 8 remakes seem inferior to them

The WiiU exclusives were (mostly) good enough to be repurposed as crutches for the Switch’s (in my opinion) unimpressive exclusive library. Hell, we’re in a fucking MK8 thread in the year 2023 because it’s still relevant on the Switch.
Many of the new Switch exclusives feel corporate, uninspired, and/or blatantly unfinished to me. Could blame covid, I guess, but I don’t think that’s the full story. The NSO model suggests a shift in company focus to me.

Since some people are reporting that you can just grab an adjacent item block to get better items again, would it make more sense to keep track of item block grouping to prevent bagging? Meaning, if you get an item from a group of 5, then any other block in that group will just give trash items, meaning the player will have to move to another group to get a potentially better item, thus moving forwards and continuing the race.
It's hilarious that the characters everyone complains about (babies, metals, fursuits, and even crossover characters) are no where to be found in the new ending picture.

Yeah I played a game. Should've specified. It was Mario Kart, lol. Hadn't used my switch in like a month at the time and since sysnand looks identical to emu I didn't know I was still in cfw. This was around when wave 4 released I think and I only got banned recently. I was surprised I got banned for it though, I didn't use any mods nor have any pirated switch games or anything. Oh well, my Switch's fan was dead anyways so I couldn't really use the online anyways before it overheated in sub 20min. Gives me an excuse to just pirate everything now. But yeah, always make absolutely sure that you're on clean firmware before you go online I suppose would be the lesson from this.

Drivers can probably be largely swapped out in some cases if they're smart. Tour shows they can absolutely put more resources into drivers if they so wish.
Tracks is tricky. Either they do something really nuts with the track design or we might get a higher amount to start, like 40 or 48. Could also take a mix from Tour and Splatoon by promising a number of tracks post-launch. 32 solid tracks, but then you expand that to match 8 Deluxe in relatively short time.

Oh yeah, and because Tour is MK9, the next Mario Kart could be MKX where the X is a reference to it being the 10th Mario Kart and also a crossover.

Mario Kart 9 has a long shadow to escape after this game. I feel Super Smash Kart is the only way to top this, where you get several more Nintendo brands involved, and maybe some third parties. Sonic already has a baked in racing series and All-Stars Transformed was one of the best racing games ever made.
But there are also a handful of tracks from Tour, original or remake, that were left out. Gotta leave something for future games. Piranha Plant Pipe seems to be a popular pick for a "retro" track next game.

Bowser Castle 3 is how to do a rework of an old track. What the hell were they thinking with Sunset Wilds and some other Snes/GBA tracks?

Sunset Wilds should not have been done if they couldn't do the transition. Imagine cutting brand new tracks and a first-time returning Gamecube track, but not a track whose fundamental gimmick couldn't work in 8 Deluxe. Yoshi Desert was right there too.

I will admit that after playing cheese land a lot I've come to appreciate a lot of the changes it brought from the original. Things such as the swiss-like holes in the ground you can trick off of or the sand blowing in the wind which brings the image of a smelly piece of cheese in the hot sun. I can understand being upset about the aesthetic changes from SC but I still think the 8 version stands strong on its own.

If you're on a losing streak, the game will sometimes throw you into lobbies with players who have much lower VR comparatively. So if you're in a lobby and there's just one or two guys who have high VR farming everyone else who have much lower VR, those guys were likely getting their asses beat not too long ago. 🙂

Meta matters even less after they hard balanced shit over the course of the DLC. Pretty much anything is viable now for racing. You only need to sweat hard and pick optimal meta shit if you're trying to go for the lowest times in time trials.
I wasn't talking about needing to sweat it out, I was just explaining why you see normal lobbies with like 6,000 VR players and then there's that one guy who joins with 80,000 VR who really doesn't need to be there.
It could also be if someone with high VR joined the lobby of a friend with low VR, happened to me last year.

Sad, I forget they made the tracks far wider to compensate for more drivers. What I liked about the GC version is how tight you have to make those turns coming down the mountain before the bridge. Feels like that's lost with a wider track.
DK Mountain and RR are really good but the rest is kinda meh. Bowser's Castle is alright but has a very simplistic layout. PPC is acceptable I guess, but Daisy's Circuit looks like shit and Rosalina's track is extremly mellow for the last cup. I loathe the city tracks at this point. Seeing the same design with the waving yoshi's on the side, it' depressing. Online is flooded with mediocre or bad tracks and I wonder if it was worth considering that every wave had at most 3 good tracks out of 8

No cope, how does the quality of the booster course tracks compare to the original DLC tracks? From a distance they look worse, a lot of phoned in filler stuff (especially ports from tour) dragging down the average and making the game worse than before - with a few fan favourite highlights thrown in to sweeten things. But that's from a distance, maybe I'm being too cynical.

So you'd say that the inclusion of the booster pass has dragged down the average quality of the tracks? If you're being given assigned a track at random then on average you'll be getting a worse track than you would before?
There's a huge difference in quality between the vanilla MK8 + DLC tracks and the Booster Pass, even disregarding the shitty graphical quality on a lot of them, you can see that they prioritized Tour tracks to the point Kalimari Desert and Piranha Plant Cove have the stupid arrows too. That's why Bowser's Castle 3 sticks out so hard, because that track almost feels like it should have been part of the base game with how well remade it was.
So yeah, it's not a good experience when half the time you'll have to pick between one or even two Tour tracks when playing online, and for some ungodly reason people like to pick trash like New York Minute or Tokyo Drift.
That's a shame, sounds like it's more or less as I expected and feared. Might still play through them sometime but I think they'd have been much wiser promising far fewer tracks and only including the ones that really merited inclusion. The original DLC tracks were generally great, better on average than the base game, they should have made sure to repeat that even if it meant far fewer tracks (and really who needs that many anyway? are most people really going to get to know all those tracks properly, especially when so many of them aren't worth getting to know?).
Kalimari Desert 2 got adapted into the main version which is strange. Piranha Plant Cove is expected since it was a course from Tour to begin with.

Weirdest thing is Sky High Sundae, Yoshi's Island, and Squeaky-Clean Sprint aren't listed as being from MK8 in Tour despite coming out a few days to month before. Meanwhile in MK8 the tracks from Tour that aren't based on a real-world location Merry Mountain, Ninja Hideaway, and Piranha Plant Cove aren't listed as being from Tour.

They should have added a setting for how long it takes for item boxes to respawn.
I've always liked the strategy involved in trying to take item boxes so other people won't get them, or needing to maneuver to get a non-optimal item box.
That'd be completely unenforceable online, it'd basically just be a thing for lobbies like the Item spawn selection they added.
Yeah, it would pretty much only be for custom games, but I would've appreciated it given that they've pretty much made it instantaneous now, and it has been buffed several times across the duration of the game.

Playing the time trials for 150 and 200 for each track respectively, on standard Mario with everything, 1st cup done
Not too into what that cup offers. Rome is whatever and for some reason I find it sort of hard to know where to head despite the arrows because everything looks so similar, unless I gave up all too quickly at the sight of these fences, they kinda butchered DK Mountain, I was excited to do the shortcut. That aside its still a bit wavy and learning to deal with that is neat enough. Daisy Circuit is Daisy Circuit, it wasn't a standout in Wii and it isn't here, the additions aren't too bad however, boost pads in the otherwise slow u turn make for a more dynamic layout especially on 200. Piranha Plant Cove is interesting if not flawed but it is surprisingly non linear for a track that's featured in Tour, I think following how good players play it will be most interesting out of the pack. However its riddled with boring straight away at times and its an underwater level for better or for worse (Probably the best utilisation of underwater since floaty physics enable potential shortcuts, hence my interest)

Anyway, halfway done with the next cup. Madrid is alright, plays smoother in 200 with little rest. Rosalina's Ice World I had a soft spot on for its music but I neither like the remix all that much (lost a bit of its grace because of the instrumentation) and the track itself was never exceptional although the additional of a ramp at the end improves a track which was lacking in shortcuts.

I agree with most of these. Hard to argue about the tier placements, at least. The wildly varying quality of this DLC feels like something Nintendo would have never allowed in a major IP before the Switch. I’m tired of Nutendo and this console generation.

MK8 is such a mixed bag for me. I wish they had kept some of the feel and mechanics from Wii because the series got sterilized hard in 7. 8 is just a better continuation of that.
yeah it felt like there was no quality control. the three GCN tracks seem like they have been made by an entirely different team because their quality differs so much from the garbage that the city tracks are. it's kinda inexcusable to have something as lame as Madrid or Rome after 6! waves with the same bland design. many of the tracks that are higher in my tier list are only there because the originals were so great. almost all MK 8 remakes seem inferior to them

You can't seriously be saying this when "major IPs" had blunder after fucking blunder in the 3DS and Wii U eras.
The WiiU itself was the biggest blunder. Pretty much every game ported to Switch other than TMS did better.
I don’t recall that many missteps on those consoles other than the concept and marketing of the WiiU (and the 3DS’s 3D feature). The WiiU exclusives were (mostly) good enough to be repurposed as crutches for the Switch’s (in my opinion) unimpressive exclusive library. Hell, we’re in a fucking MK8 thread in the year 2023 because it’s still relevant on the Switch.
Many of the new Switch exclusives feel corporate, uninspired, and/or blatantly unfinished to me. Could blame covid, I guess, but I don’t think that’s the full story. The NSO model suggests a shift in company focus to me.

Since some people are reporting that you can just grab an adjacent item block to get better items again, would it make more sense to keep track of item block grouping to prevent bagging? Meaning, if you get an item from a group of 5, then any other block in that group will just give trash items, meaning the player will have to move to another group to get a potentially better item, thus moving forwards and continuing the race.
