>Mario & Luigi series is dead
>Paper Mario will never be an RPG again
>Mario & Rabbids proves there is interest in sharing IPs with talented devs
>Square Enix continues to make great strides in classic-style JRPGs with Octopath, Bravely, Triangle Strategy, etc
Is it time for Super Mario RPG 2, bros?

Genofags killed any chance of this ever happening.
Atleast paper mario had 3 decent games
Not just 2, Bowsers Vore Fetish was fucking garbage and full of gimmicky shit
no it didn't?
if anything the geno autism only served to show that there's actual interest in a potential sequel. waluigi fan autism didn't get waluigi removed from the series, so why would it be different with geno?
>if anything the geno autism only served to show that there's actual interest in a potential sequel.
You are assuming that Genofags were Mario RPG fans to begin with.
More like GenoCIDE!!!
Play fangames.
Name one good Mario RPG fangame/romhack. The ICU Gigasoft games don't count.
Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Sages was pretty fun
https://pricklypeargames.itch.io/pomao-scales-a-spire
I like this kind of early development things where only placeholder assets exist yet. But holy shit make the damage calculation more satisfying. Seeing the enemy lose a hp when my guy is already moving back to his side feels extremely unresponsive.
thanks for playing, I'll loop back on that.
Mario RPG Armageddon. It even fixes the battle music by using the area background music in battles save for certain key battles.
Yeah, it's pretty autistic, but I kinda appreciate it for that.
Fangames have no soul.
If they did have soul then the creator would've reskinned their characters to make the game into their own property. The reason they used licensed characters is because they know their game would have no value otherwise.
>Fangames have no soul.
Neither have the last three Paper Mario games.
A lot more soul than this shit.
>Origami King has no soul
listen to the battle music themes of that game and you'll understand why this is absolutely false
So then if a fangame had its own original music that was good it would have soul?
It would if that original music was also specifically created for that game.
But then it would be even more offputting to know that the creator decided to go with licensed characters instead of making the whole thing an original product and letting the composer's talents go to waste like that.
No. Inspired original works are soulful because they're made out of an appreciation for the work they were inspired from.
>No. Inspired original works are soulful because they're made out of an appreciation for the work they were inspired from.
that's not how it works
making a fanwork is effectively saying "I love this series and I want to see more of it, I don't care if I can't profit off of it"
making a cheap """original""" knockoff is saying "I want to make a copy of this game, but I also want to be able to monetize it later down the line, so I'm going to reskin it to be just different enough that I can't be sued"
which one sounds more soulful to you?
the latter, yes.
I don't think you know what soul actually is
I mean, I don't, sure. But I made
>making a fanwork is effectively saying "I love this series and I want to see more of it, I don't care if I can't profit off of it"
No, making a fangame is saying "I have no respect for the original creators of this series and I want to pretend like I have a better understanding of where this series should go than they do. Let me take over."
Making an original inspired game is saying "I deeply appreciate and respect this series and want to see more games like it. Here's my own attempt at that."
The latter is more soulful by definition. You have no understanding of art appreciation if you think otherwise.
>No, making a fangame is saying "I have no respect for the original creators of this series and I want to pretend like I have a better understanding of where this series should go than they do. Let me take over."
?
so by your definition it's perfectly fine and soulful to make a fanwork when the original creators are no longer involved with their respective series and/or the series is long dead?
>Making an original inspired game is saying "I deeply appreciate and respect this series and want to see more games like it. Here's my own attempt at that."
how is this not a phrase that can be applied to a fangame? you're making a game that is similar to the game you like either way, the only difference is that you're either making it take place in your own interpretation of the same universe or you're not. if there's a passion to make it an enjoyable experience, then it is soulful
not to say you should never make something original, but if you're making by all means a carbon copy of the same game and doing nothing original but flipping the assets because you think that it's all you need to do, you're not making a "soulful" original work, you're making a knockoff.
you put a lot of words in his mouth
>so by your definition it's perfectly fine and soulful to make a fanwork when the original creators are no longer involved with their respective series and/or the series is long dead?
No. The series should ideally stay dead if the original creator is no longer involved in it and didn't state that he wanted others to continue the series.
>how is this not a phrase that can be applied to a fangame? you're making a game that is similar to the game you like either way, the only difference is that you're either making it take place in your own interpretation of the same universe or you're not. if there's a passion to make it an enjoyable experience, then it is soulful
An original inspired game CAN take place in the same universe as the game it's inspired off of, at least in the creator's mind. Mother 4 is a good example of this. It's a fangame in name only. All of the characters/assets are completely original, and it may as well be an original IP that just happens to be named Mother 4. The creators intended for it to be in the same universe as Mother, but it's doing so while putting out a completely original creation that doesn't encroach on the legacy of any of Itoi's creation. A non-canon in-universe sequel that uses its own original characters/assets like this is the only way that a fangame can be "soulful". Most fangames are not like this however.
I can't even pay attention to the battle themes with how god awful the combat system is.
Are the simple puzzles really filtering you that hard? That's embarrassing.
I like how if you go into the game files you can find a legit combat system that they were working on.
What a joke.
I mean nothing but oops all toads in the audience should show you they don't care anymore.
fangames/modpacks only work for certain genres.
removing recognizable elements and reskinning them into """original""" creations solely for the sake of being different is objectively soulless.
fangames regardless of quality are objectively soulful because they're made out of an appreciation for the work they're based on.
I decided to finally give the rest of the M&L games a shot and they’re great
Initially felt indifferent when they died since I only cared for SSS back then, but now I’m really sad and feel stupid for not buying them till now
I bought Dream Team on release because I was a massive tendie but never ended up playing it. Got Paper Jam for my wife and also never played it. Played SSS, PiT, and BiS just fine and liked them. Are DT and PJ on par with Bis?
PJ is pretty weak but I thought DT was fun and soulful
I liked everything about it more but the pacing is offputting at times
PJ still plays well though, and both have the best bosses
I liked Dream Team a lot but it gets a lot of shit for having a lot of tutorials and being really long for M&L standards. Most of the games are like 20-25ish hours while DT is somewhere in the 40s. It is a little uninspired since it was trying to be BIS 2.0 but its still fine.
I felt like Dream Team did well by making Bowser the villain all the way through. In Superstar Saga he was possessed, and while he was technically the final boss in Partner’s in Time the story was resolved at that point. Bowser’s Inside Story makes him a protagonist, so having him be the one who uses the new antagonist instead of it being the other way around was refreshing.
I think it was a logical progression too, and him acknowledging Luigi at the end was wonderful
My problem is a personal one and I find it hard to take him as seriously as other antagonists
Always thought antasma could come back post dream team but that’s also a dream at this point
I really liked DT because of Luigi's character development.
Unfortunately it's one of those series that peaked with its first game, though it doesn't have any actual bad games at least. Bowser's Prostate Exam is really overrated but still good.
I like that SSS, and DT around the same I think
SSS might win out due to nostalgia and if DT were paced better I’d like it more than bowsers since I didn’t care for bowsers gameplay as much as the bros and I think the bosses gameplay over world and 2D sections were more entertaining
The sequels are not bad but most people get tired of playing the same shit over and over and after bowser's inside story it felt like they started it playing overly safe on top. And then they only started remaking their most popular games which was playing it even safer.
Either they should have made a RPG of another nintendo serise like zelda or they should have done something new with mario and luigi which was a bit risky and more interesting.
Never gonna happen.
It's time for the Mario & Sonic RPG made by Atlus, actually
This fake screenshot almost gave me a heart attack. Fuck you.
?
That sounds like a fucking mess.
No, It missed it's opportunity.
As much as I'd love to see the world of my favorite video game again, unless they get the original crew, it'd just be ruined by the very real mandate and have lame gimmicks slapped on.
look at this trailer and tell me the mandate is real
>inb4 nintendo doesnt apply the mandate to western productions because... THEY JUST DONT
no, you look at this game and tell me the mandate isnt real
that game just proves tanabe is a fucking moron
but tanabe didnt came up with the mandate, he's just another corpo asslicker, the head of all is miyamoto and as long as he's in charge mario wont pass from toads and statics again
Wasn't the reason they only used mainline characters because they wanted to focus on the "crossover" aspect (i.e. WOAH MARIO AND PAPER MARIO IN GRASS LAND BUT ALSO PAPER GRASS LAND)?
Read
Mario & Luigi died so that Paper Mario can be a REAL RPG again, that why Nintendo didn't buy Alphadream.
Reminder that this stared off as a Hamtaro game and only became a Mario game shortly before it's E3 showcase because the North American rights to Hamtaro were in limbo and Nintendo didn't want to deal with the legal hell clearing the rights for that region.
This was from the Gigaleak, not just from Resetera.
They will not.
Yes they did, the Square half did.
>and tell me the mandate isnt real
When will you tards stop blaming your mandate boogieman and realize it's Tanabe doing that shit?
Mario Odyssey released within two years of Paper Jam and was filled with 'mandate' breaking shit.
The new Mario movie is breaking 'mandates'
Or are you going to pretend that somehow these things are exempt from your mandate?
the mandate isn't real, it's just that nu-paper mario is a sovl black hole, especially considering the only nu-paper mario game around at the time of paper jam's release was sticker star
god i really fucking hate what sticker star has done to this game and paper mario in general
Reminder that Sticker Star was supposed to be a Nisekoi game but was reskined into a Mario Game at the last minute because Intelligent System's original pitch for a 3DS Paper Mario was too much like 1000 Year Door.
Thats why Chitoge was in the Wii U Mario Maker.
Donkey Kong, a Mario character, uses a power up?
Are you joking? Everything we've seen from this makes it look like mandate: the movie. Totally sterile and with the impact of a wet noodle.
>Peach has an active role
>Whacky species appear instead of sterile red Toads, Goombas, and Koopas
>Enemies are allowed some degree of individuality (eyepatch Koopa, for example)
Please, do continue.
I don't think you understand why the mandate makes people upset
I don't think you know your head from your ass. You know Peach was playable in that piece of shit 3D World, right? And I wouldn't consider slapping an eyepatch on a generic mook "individuality."
I didn't notice any of these "whacky species" you're talking about either. Show me.
Play Paper Mario Sticker Star if you want to understand the Mandate, you no game playing faglord.
Why the fuck would I need to play that piece of shit to understand the mandate? I've seen enough of it already. Still waiting on those "whacky species."
>Watching instead of playing
average_v_poster.jpg
Dont post in threads you don't understand shit about
>NOOOOO YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE BAD GAME TO UNDERSTAND IT
Nah.
Sticker Star came out in 2012, and there were plenty of other games since then that disprove the existence of the mandate.
The truth is just that Sticker Star was rushed. That Miyamoto article was just a way of avoiding admitting that.
the wacky species thing is definitely false, but there being any sort of individuality in crowds whatsoever is already a significant plus over whatever the hell is going on in paper mario
I'm gonna need a little more than a single eyepatch to prove that this movie hasn't largely fallen in line with the mandate.
how about chunky kong being in it? or does he not count?
Love that guy. Why would he count?
Damn dude, anons sure do get quiet when you ask them to explain their reasoning.
Didn't they already announce they're setting up a DK movie?
i could believe we'd have a DK movie brimming with soul and kremlings and we'd still have people scream mandate.
Why? I don't remember anyone complaining about a DK mandate.
because people lump DK into mario when its continent for them and separate them when it goes against muh mandate, look at
for an example.
A single anon. Yeah, I don't think it's going to be nearly as big of a debate as you think it is.
He counts along with Swanky and Kiddy
>he thinks the movie has the same freesom as the games
No fucking shit the movie has more freedom, that doesnt magically absolve all the shit the games went through (and will continue going through).
Ignore him, he still hasn't answered my question as to what "whacky species" were shown in any of these trailers.
Hollywood gnomish mandates outrank Nintendo mandates.
>look at this trailer and tell me the mandate is real
Even if the mandate didn't apply here but use is this for me who likes video games and not garden gnome hollywood productions?
Are there any good fan games for paper mario?
Like stuff that isnt just a mod with stronger enemies or something but new stuff
I remember some guys on gamefaqs banded together to make a new PM game, but I dunno how far they got. I know they had a battle demo.
Oh its been dead for over a decade. Shame.
I'm working on a text based PM fan game right now where you make up a team of 1-3 characters and fight through a custom roster in the Glitz Pit. You make the moves with the same specifications as in game and it'll get assigned a corresponding FP cost. My friends and I used to do this on gamefaqs, we had a few seasons. It was very fun.
No but there are some in development.
that really ceases my desist
Who the fuck cares about fan games?
ehh, itd be all zoomed out, giant ass seamless connected world with no level map or dreamy map song
SE hate the guts of miyamoto since SMRPG, this is never gonna happen, and if by any miracle it gets greenlighted you can bet your ass motherfucking Tanabe is gonna be in charge of the project and will end up being shit
I am torn on this.
On the one hand, I want a new Mario RPG.
On the other hand, modern Nintendo would likely fuck it up!
Square Enix did not make SMRPG.
>Chihiro Fujioka, director of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars has said that he'd like his final game to be “another Mario RPG if possible
I remain hopeful. SMRPG is my favorite game of all time. OF ALL TIME.
I finally played through mario RPG and was stunned with how underdeveloped Geno was and how much everyone loved him. Mallon was way cooler
I feel like a lot of people got onboard the Geno train because he represented the best chance of any recognition of SMRPG. The game holds a special place in many people's hearts. Mallow is a much better character too IMO but I'll take any SMRPG nod I can get
>great strides
dunno bout that one chief
M&L is SMRPG2. AlphaDream was literally founded by the SMRPG team who didn't like the faggy direction Squaresoft was headed.
SquEnix relationship with nintendo isn't as great as it used to be.
>Octopath
>Great
Square gets no passes anymore. They had a small thing going with Bravely 1 and while I like Bravely Second, the censorship and lack of bug tweaks (it is still possible to soft lock on ultra bosses with auto battle and wrong job selection) showed how little they cared or even learned from the firsts success. This isn’t the 90’s, Square and Nintendo by themselves can’t make magic happen. What makes you think together they’d fair any better?
I'm currently playing through TTYD for the first time and not only is it far too easy, it also feels like it's padded out since there's so much back-and-forth running involved.
TTYD is overrated, 64 is the superior Paper Mario game
Based. TTYD is just a rehash of 64 with tons of backtracking added.
Is 64 any harder though?
Depends on what you consider harder.
Focus more on badge points, don't try to be a "gotta have equal stat spread" guy since a lot of TTYD's strengths come from the equippable badges later on in the game.
>Square Enix bitching that none of their AA JRPGs are selling as well as they want
>SMRPG not on Switch Online yet
If they aren't going to announce both this summer, they're idiots.
Between FFXV, Forspoken, and their upcoming NFT project, I'm not sure how you don't already consider them idiots.
the idiocy is on nintendo in this regard, considering they're apparently only capable of porting a couple of roms per month at best to their glorified emulators
Those are their B and C games, their AA and A games are on PS5, just like their AAA games.
I think paper mario 64 was a good sequel despite creating its own sub series that overtook it until the gba games revived it
Enix continues to make great strides in classic-style JRPGs with Octopath, Bravely, Triangle Strategy, etc
Fucking KEK
SE has gone full retard with their obsession with NFT, give up.
I love how one of the bosses is just a giant wedding cake that has inexplicably come to life and no explanation is ever given for why and how.
Did anyone else feel that Sparks of Hope missed on every beat that Mario RPGs tend to have? It felt like a shitty fangame at time, very flaccid execution. For some reason people hate TOK, but that game hits every single Mario RPG beat.
It had the same problem as the previous M+R game, with Beep-o and Jeanie hogging the majority of the cutscene time, and the characters you're actually playing as just being there in the background acting silly.
Bowser had some decent lines when he first joined your party that reminded me a lot of SMRPG, but nothing much after that.
It's fucking over for Mario RPGs, most you'll get from now on is sticker star 4-63
Uhhh...
I'm sorry to say you seem to be overdosing on copium
>I don't know what the Gigaleak is.
