Mass Effect

So my biggest issues are:
>Lack of depth with squadmates/characters in general (having two renegades or paragons will end up contradicting their character)
>Side missions all suck (yes, this includes bring down the sky)
>Exploration is shit and pointless
>Main story also sucks because you are just given information on a silver platter with no mystery (everything is solved off screen)
>Mind control plot thread which destroys any sense of Sarens agency, reducing him to being no more than a zombie that talks
>Sovereign, despite saying reapers are "independent", attacks all advanced life in unison
>No actual point to talking to Sovereign
>Saren under the control of Sovereign could have easily reactivated the citadel for the reaper invasion when he still had his spectre status while still acting in secrecy (no point to the wild goose chase at all)
>If Saren was behind the destruction of the prothean beacon on Eden Prime, why didn't he just destroy it shortly after he left before Shepherd could get to it? Similarly, why didn't he just bring it with him when he had already moved it that far? What was the point of the timed detonation of the bombs when he could have remotely detonated them as soon as he left?
>Apparently no one hundreds of years in the future had heard of an autopsy, which would have easily proved that Saren was guilty
>Spectre status is handed to you on a silver platter regardless of what you say or do and whether or not you want it or not
>For a game that emphasizes player choice, almost none of your choices matter
>Inexcusably barren hubworlds
>Despite being self described as pure sci-fi, omnigel magic and biotic magic exist

you're right, the people who wrote ME1 were big stupid jellyfish. they couldn't even get the "VI" part of the prothean VI codex. in reality, it is an AI that has it's own opinions. the codex is also a 4th wall break as well so you have no excuse for the game breaking its own lore

You see anon, they don't actually have an excuse for the beacon since apparently the beacon had a self destruct mode any way. Despite the push back, ME1 has the worst opener in the entire series

Romancing is also extremely shallow thus making it terrible. What excuse does this game have for the romances being so shit? Because there is a large plethora of visual novels with a large emphasis on player choice that came before it. Like, how much of the game do you ME1 gays actually think is good? Because the game has no redeeming qualities besides world building

The combat is fun enough that it feels rewarding to play through, at least the games tie together better than Dragon Age.

You don't have the background understanding of what games were like in 2007. You can look at ME1 from today's perspective and see all the flaws and shortcomings but you don't know why it's like that, thus you assume there's no reason they couldn't have done better.

            Anonymous

No, there really wasn't any reason they couldn't have done better. Just look at a game like Utawaremono or hell even Star Control which came out years before.

Also, ME2 said hell with the memory limitations put it on to 2 disks.

He wasn't under Sovereigns control at that point. You go through three different missions spelling out how afraid Saren is of being indoctrinated, clearly showing it hasn't happened yet

He and the geth BOTH attacked Eden Prime and the geth consider the reapers as gods. There is no reason to believe that the geth would follow him and that Saren wasn't indoctrinated the entire time

ME1 brings a pretty big issue to the table. How was the series ever supposed to handle reaper indoctrination? What is Shepherd just supposed to be naturally immune??? Why did the reapers need to invade the galaxy at all when indoctrination would have done the trick all by itself just fine? Whats stopping the reapers from just making the mass relays/the citadel from emitting indoctrination signals?

      Anonymous

It appears to takes days or weeks of continued exposure to Reaper tech. Every example of it happening in ME1 and 2 are people who decided to live next to or inside Reaper tech. It doesn't seem like it can be broadcast, and it has a very short area of effect from the tech itself.

        Anonymous

        >It doesn't seem like it can be broadcast
Bullshit. If it couldn't be broadcast, all "indoctrinated" subjects would just be husks. Not even mentioning that the Citadel is a GIANT reaper tech that people actually live in. There is no excuse for this shit I'm afraid, especially the citadel part. Why not just indoctrinate the entire citadel and THEN invade the galaxy? The reapers would have nothing to lose and everything to gain

Fair points. The whole cosmic horror part of the Reapers is in direct opposition to their nature as a machine intelligence and the assumption that they would act logically to achieve their goal. Maybe it's cause I never played ME3 but my current understanding of
          >We must destroy intelligent life in the galaxy every 50,000 years
          >Why? Uhhhhhh our motives are like so complex you wouldn't get it but we have to do it this specific way, we just have to
just seems like a copout cause the writers know the answer will never be as interesting as the mystery.

            Anonymous

It definitely is a copout. So was Liara's "explanation" of how she somehow theorized that galactic civilizations being wiped out every 50k years. It's a copout because she said that there were simply too many sources of why she thought that and it would be too hard to explain. It's just lazy storytelling and all the writers had to do was just make some shit up

I always though the "reaper tech" that could indoctrinate were parts of a destroyed reaper or a living reaper itself? Not all tech created by reapers could indoctrinate.

The Sovereign conversation is where the Reapers fall apart as an antagonist for me because after all the build up and the spooky visions he shows in the course of a single conversation that he's just a generic bioware villain who blusters about how you could never comprehend his goals

ME1 is essentially what happens when you take the old crpg style of dialogue and cut it down with a chainsaw to accommodate the main character having a voice. Even Fallout 4 has more choices with notable consequences than ME1 and that is honestly pathetic

I like how people complain about ME2 being a glorified side quest as if that is somehow a mark against the game. I mean, how dare developers actually tie in side quests to the main story in a meaningful way. Obviously, not all of them do, but about half or more of them do. Just take Project Overlord, Liar of the Shadowbroker, or the best of all, the Arrival dlc. In ME1 the side content connects never connects to the main story. And no, I don't count Cerberus or ED because Bioware made a connection with them to the main story thanks to ME2
