      they..didn't

      They didn't.
Companies realized that dedicated servers gave life to old games and people sticking to them instead of playing the newer installments was a bad thing, piracy was also a part of the equation.
And in the case of Blizzard it gave them an easy way to sanction all competitive gaming, unfortunately they were too late to benefit from the competitive scene and they are still mad about not cashing in earlier, so they keep enforcing it.

The main reason is that developers/publishers want more control to curate the experience for their players. This lets them more easily control "engagement metrics" which are good for getting gays to buy skins

How CSGO does it then? They only make money from skins and crates

Match Making has been made into part of the system that manipulates players into spending more.
Matchmaking games pair you with shit players when you spend, so that you can feel good immediately after putting money into the game. After some time they put you with good players so that you start losing again, and feel inclined to spend money again.

why i don't play new shooters
i ONLY play on fun servers and now they don't exist because matchmaking forces everyone to play the same way

issue isnt matchmaking its ELO based matchmaking
    >inb4 you want ez wins against n00bs
its never fun trying to ge in a couple of matches only for your teamates to be lobotomized meanwhile the enemy team has 5 super sayans on smurf accounts

Wow yeah that situation definitely would never happen in a non ELO matchmaking system

Matchmaking is good for games that aren't team-based like FGs and other 1v1/solo queue stuff. If you can't blame or be blamed by your team all of these problems go away.
