There are people unaware of the fact that Mavis has never been a real person, her made up character isn't even consistent in appearance and they put a new model on the cover with every release. And they're happier not knowing.

The original Mavis (Mavis Ground Zero) was real but disappeared after 1995

Yeah it really isn’t. It’s edutainment at best and even that is stretch. It’s a typing tutor software tool.

Even still I think edutainment/educational software should be discussed here as there is no true retro-computing board.

Ive always wanted to know more about Japanese edutainment games. Only ones i know of are some math games on the Famicom and english lessons on DS. I feel like if a nip version of Reader Rabbit existed, jap learners would probably be interested in it.

There are a bunch, as you'd expect. Here's a quick overview.

Yea I admittedly was too lazy to search. In the same sense I'm sure enough are aware of the west's old bundled Windows games like pinball, Japan also had their own alongside those. M$ even has downloads to them that probably got updated for recent compatibily, like an ARM version.

The core gameplay of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing is based on skill. It can be a steep learning curve at the start because each keystroke has to be nearly-perfect if you truly want to become proficient. Otherwise, you will produce several typing errors that require enough time to cancel out the effect of the high RPM that they were typed at in the first place. Becoming truly proficient with a keyboard can help out immensely when it comes to gaming and the benefit transfers into using other peripherals like D-Pads. In that sense, WPM records aren't all too different from the high score table in an old arcade game.
