to be fair a lot of stuff in Portal is engine asset/entity reuse with a new skin

        Anonymous

This is funnily enough exactly why Portal was written into HL to begin with, because Portal was made by a small team reusing shitloads of HL2 assets and nobody thought it was going to be a huge deal of a game so Laidlaw decided "fuck it we can just write it into the same universe to explain all the asset reuse"

Neither, the Combine are just Aperture from the far future.
Their technology hasn't changed much because they're proud of their products.

Personally i think it could work but only if you can be selective about showing the wackiness of Aperture in HL. Just show some stuff from Aperture that made sense in HL story and tone and i think it wouldn't clash so hard in case of a stright crossover or something.

Black Mesa is superior because they actually managed to cross into different dimensions. Aperture hasn't even managed to breach this current reality, they just basically built doors.

Black Mesa discovered other dimensions while Aperture discovered parallel universes, i don't know which is more impressive to be honest.

I know there are some people on Ganker who don't like portal 2 and how it changed the tone of the portal games. But honestly I think it's just really cute, and the fact that valve managed to make the murderous supercomputer seem innocent and lovable is a testament to how good they are at making compelling games.
