MechWarrior 5

What went wrong?

Not much. But not much went well either. It’s okay if you like the franchise but it won’t draw in many new players imo, due to the open ended gameplay.

The game needed a tighter focus like the mech 4 campaigns

So you could mod gears of war to have the characters wear robot skins and you have your game.
Third person is retarded because all you actually care about is perceived responsiveness in the controls and the skin of your character.

Piloting a Gundam is a first person experience. A studio fails utterly if they don't even get this correct. The only way around it is to have the player give orders, rather than be a pilot himself

No they're not, retard. Stop pretending to know shit about franchises you have no clue about. Only light mechs are supposed to be fast, everything else is slow as shit. The only thing Mechwarrior gets wrong is that the arms are supposed to be far more mobile, able to swing swords and other melee weaponry.

Medium and faster heavy mechs are supposed to move with about as much alacrity as a dude in armor. There are mech sports in the setting. There's an entire baseball league played with mechs.

Humanoid mechs get described as moving with good dexterity literally all the time in the novels. Panthers and Centurions are commonly described as looking like and moving like men in armor despite being firmly in the median as far as speed is concerned. In one of the Jade Falcon novels a clan commander forces the unit under her command to perform synchronized mech calisthenics to try and un-fuck their coordination issues.

I'm not trying to tell you that they're Gundam tier but a properly tuned mech is plenty nimble compared to how they tend to be presented in the vidya.

Battletech occupies the middle ground between plodalong tanks and weeaboo breakdancing robots.

They're big industrial bricks which move at a maximum speed of maybe 50mph and have all kinds of bulky design points because they're designed to look like they actually have a shitload of machinery packed into them. The Battletech universe is like two, three centuries out from having frontflipping bullet-dodging machines. The Archangel is the closest thing there is, utilizing bullshit Word of Blake supertech and only pilotable by butchered up cyborgs, and even that looks like a walking building.

        >They're big industrial bricks which move at a maximum speed of maybe 50mph
Anon, that's the slowest assault mech category.
Heavies and everything above (plus mobile assaults like the Banshee) all go a fair bit higher than that.
Light mechs could easily outrun most trains.

          Anonymous

          >a fair bit higher than that
          A Jenner only moves at 110kph, which translates to 68mph, and that's a 35ton light with a 245 engine
The Fireball, which is basically an engine with legs and explodes if somebody hucks a rock at it, has a top speed of about 110mph
These mechs aren't outrunning any trains, anon

            Anonymous

Fairly sure you could build them up to hit up to 170kph. And that's without the speed boost of the better myomers.

              Anonymous

You could probably hit 200kph/125mph with a custom built light/medium-light, but my point is that these mechs move at relatively realistic speeds with relatively realistic agility, they aren't winning a breakdancing competition.

We have realistic mechanical digitrade walkers out there and they are nowhere near fucking 50 kph.

Yeah but we're also not in the year 2700+
Battletech is not exactly science fantasy. It's not hard sci-fi, either, sure, but it leans that way, and the aesthetic is a continuation of that.

I would like the game to be more like actual Battletech, but it makes sense that the developer would make the gameplay feel like the older Mechwarrior games since that's what 99% of the fans are familiar with.

The light and some of the medium Mechs might go relatively zoom. Heavies and above are usually somewhere between 30-64kph. The limbs are way more articulated than any of the MechWarrior games let on. And the acrobatics stuff is usually mentioned as a circus act since doing that with a mech on the battlefield is just slow and pointless.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me it was the randomly spawning enemies, pop up turrets, and absolutely dogshit awful enemy and team AI that all came together and made it feel really awful to play.

The campaigns were really weird too and just felt like endless shooting galleries with no real objective that made military sense

      >The campaigns were really weird too and just felt like endless shooting galleries with no real objective that made military sense

100% this, it really is just a dumb shooting gallery. Also the lack of a proper radar (to hide the constantly spawning enemy AI, no doubt), god awful maps, terrible mission design and general lack of sim-like elements like active/passive radar and a whole host of systems just made the whole thing feel incredibly lacking by comparison with older games, there really is no fucking soul there.

MW5 *is* still fun with a bunch of mods, and some mods are starting to do neat things like satellite tactical views for issuing orders etc which are really fucking nice, but for a game that now has five fucking DLC's, the core is still incredibly lacking and all of the mods are pretty much entirely focussed on bringing back functionality from older games, which should have been the devs baseline, not a modders end goal.

9/10 is a bit optimistic, but as someone who would have rated it 4/10 on release as well, it's quite enjoyable now with mods.

Much better mission variety, lots more environments, better enemy spawning, better AI, better control of your lance mates with tactical views, better mechlab, better audio, betty audio, better visuals, better UI, better map/management mechanics and lots of tweaks, more mech functionality like lights, vision modes, zoom modes etc, LOTS of quality of life stuff, compass, better salvage mechanics, pilot perk systems, better optimization/shaders etc etc etc All of it comes together to create a much more enjoyable, engaging and immersive experience.

Modded Mechwarrior 5 + all DLC is good, whilst not being great, vanilla Mechwarrior 5 is aids, doubly so on release.

I'm not very into mechs or anything, when I bought the game I dropped it after 16 hours. My issues were:
    >shit teammate ai. literally completely useless
    >procedural generated maps means 90% of missions is actually walking from point a to point b in an emtpy field map
    >no weapon variety. every weapon from each category (lasers, chainguns etc) feel exactly the same, just with different numbers. what this means is that you basically only have 5 weapons in the whole game
    >all mission types feel the same, so the campaign becomes repetitive very quickly
    >horribly long loading screens and terrible optimization
    >generic soulless ost
    >guns are not visible from the cockpit, and every cockpit looks the same from inside
I actually reinstalled it a little while ago to give it another try and I played a couple of skirmishes and I remembered why I dropped it
It just feels terrible to play

I haven't played since a bit after launch so some things may have changed, but the random spawning shit was terrible. Having enemies pop up 50 feet from you is just jarring and dumb and removes any feeling of being two opposing forces trying to oust each other.

Missions turning into "walk 5 minutes to shoot for 30 seconds to walk another 2 minutes" gets old.

I liked some things. It wasn't awful. But it wasn't a worthy successor to the other main line games, not even close. If DLC and mods have improved it may be a very good game.

tabletop rules / stuff don't translate very well when you have a player that can aim precisely and reliably drill all of his lasers on his mech into a single body part of an enemy mech for enormous pinpoint damage

as for what they are good for in mw5, I found that having a missile boat in your squad was a good way to kill enemy vehicles and turrets from afar without taking armor damage, since AI wasn't able to fuck up using LRMs (too badly)

I tried it for the first time earlier this year, it's pretty fun even though I admit there's a lot of potential it could've reached.

I haven't played it but after hearing it is only playable with mods I would rather just play mwo again. I used to love mwo and if it is still alive ill play it when I get time. Kitfox and centurion are so fun to pilot.

Mwo is as good as it is going to get for this style of game for a long, long time. The depth necessary for a good mech simulator is too time and money consuming with too small of an audience to ever really work. The only kind of mech game that makes money is one that plays like an arcade game.

  22. 2 weeks ago

My biggest issue with the singleplayer campaign is that later missions increase the difficulty by throwing endless waves of heavy and assault mechs at you, which means your lance has to have as much tonnage as possible to slog through it. A mech lance is supposed to have a good mix of light and heavy units; light mechs serve an important role and aren't supposed to just be early game chaff to be discarded as soon as heavier chases become affordable, but that's exactly how the game incentivizes you to think of them.

      Anonymous

the only time I'd hang onto light mechs into mid-game is for squeezing out a bit more tonnage to get as close to max as possible. so instead of having 185/200 or whatever it is, you lower your other 3 a bit to put a 4th light one in and fill the spot.
It's a shame it's mostly bringing the heaviest ones you can manage rather than using different setups. mobility/scouting aren't valued enough for it to be worth the sacrifice.
