I like that you started sensible and quickly switched to the wacky magic stuff. Catching people off guard.

        Anyway:
        >sea battles that escalate to canons
        >working pike and shot (both of which were terrible in M2 especially for how late they came in)
        >make knights over powered but limited, not limited by time but by land owned so you can't make a full knight army by waiting for nobles to replenish or something
        >give trade goods a use, unlock new buildings, have big enough effects that trade good regions get built to specialize
        >give Byzantines, Saxons and other dead civs access to late era gunpowder and plate armor
        >bring back general traits earned through actions but keep the new skill point buying system
        >firearm cavalry
        >battle nuns in half plate, sword and crossbow varieties, later guns
        >Davinci contraptions dlc

They could try spamming dlc for this game as well. Add in all the popular units from history that might not be in the base game like the Teutonic Knights with their fancy helmets.

Hell, they could keep the New World and gunpowder for dlc and I'd still buy it. Better than not having it at all which is really the more likely outcome without dlc. I'd be disappointed but not surprised if they even made the Crusades, the Middle East and Africa dlc.

          >not limited by time but by land owned so you can't make a full knight army by waiting for nobles to replenish or something
Honestly, I wish these games would take some inspiration from something like how recruitment in CK works. Instead of "spend x gold and unit magically transforms into existence", you have a pool based on population, culture and buildings that you can recruit from. If they die, you need to wait until they come back. If you have money, you can spend it only mercenaries instead. Makes it feel more realistic, prevents doomstacking (not much a problem in Medieval 2), losses actually hurt.

I hate how some factions just couldn't get access to firearms. It makes no sense they wouldn't use them if everyone else was. Byzantium had handheld flamethrowers and incendiary grenades but can't access guns, something they historically had (Not line infantry because they died before that, but small cannons were mounted on the Theodosian Walls in 1453).

Game of Thrones. HBO is doubling down on it recently so we're bound to get some more licensed shit and Total War seems to be the logical choice. They could even make three games and have Aegon's Conquest, Dance/Blackfyre Rebellions and WOT5K or maybe one game and campaigns as DLC. More focus on characters like Total War: China. Way more variety, popular franchise, keeps fantasy gays occupied with dragons, historygays will be happy with medieval-style aesthetics of units, potential to include Essos and even copy paste Cathay down the line.

Why make a subpar GoT game when you can make a subpar Medieval TW game and let the modders make a good GoT mod for it? Surely CA has learned that from Paradox by now?

CA almost got in legal trouble over Medieval 2 mods. Tolkien estate threatened to sue. It's why Empire was lobotomized and unmoddable (in the way Medieval 2 could be modded).

The Tolkien estate are a bunch of morons though, GRRM didn't sue Paradox over the GoT CK2 mod that made CK2 one of the best selling grand strategy games ever.

Sales. Most customers aren't particularly smart or aware of modding scene, so they will look at MTW and think "wow a knight just like my game of thrones" but if they look at GOTTW they'll think "HOLY SHIT IS THAT A GAME OF THRONES VIDEO GAME I ALWAYS WANTED ONE SO COOL".
One is boring historyshit. Other is cool popular fantasy setting. Also, arguably it would be easier to make Medieval mod out of Game of Thrones rather than vice versa, since it's easier to cut features than to make them, and you'd have to create flying units and spells and other fantasy shit. If you cut that you can easily just recolor the units to be European, add a map of Britain or something and have your swordsmanii game.

The reason why WH worked is because its based of a pre-existing strategy tabletop with already existing units, lore, etc.
Game of Thrones would belike WH if every faction was Bretonia and without any spell casting.

Crusaders sacking and the plague, the city simply mever recovered. When the turks invaded the city was just walled villages. The crusaders are probably the main reason of its fall since turks even with gunpowder needed to throw tens of thousands of their troops to the meat grinder to capture it.

                >Europeans were barely above cave Black folk until the Renaissance
Renaissance (and by extension, early modern period in general) was actually THE cave Black person period, a recession from the steady progress of Medieval ages. The wealth inequality (dirt peasants groveling in dirt) that is often attributed to medieval times only really became a thing during Renaissance thanks to huge global economic recession and increase of taxation, especially through work, placed on peasantry. Wars were felt to much greater extent, as it's during the Renaissance the great religious wars in Europe took off properly. It's arguable if scientific progress made that much of an advancement, considering that most things nowadays associated with it were actually invented during the Middle Ages. The only things that can be considered a straight improvement were in art, which is why Renaissance was hyped up as being the greatest thing ever since Rome by art historians while nowadays pretty much any historian that doesn't jerk off daily to Mona Lisa agrees Renaissance wasn't as good as it's portrayed in popular culture.

Romans were black, haven't you heard my homie? Look it up, most of Roman officers and nobility were black, white people just assumed they were white because Roman sculptures got bleached after centuries of neglect caused by the Roman society being torn down from i side by white refugees from the north.

There's nothing wrong with M2 cav when they aren't bugged. They just need to fix the bug where the whole charge dies after two horseman bump into each other or one with a tree, and make charges possible in city streets.

Hopefully we can finally promote units. Like turning those peasants into spearmen and crossbow militia into professional soldiers. For the purposes of keeping their veterancy instead of disbanding them.

I doubt they'll reintroduce armor upgrades being visually represented but promoting your swordsmen into swordsmen with munitions plate is basically the same thing.

              yeah, no, they're pretty gross

If we're just talking about making armor upgrades visible then all it'd take is making some process that makes it easier for the modelers to mix assets together. Maybe some way to differentiate different unit types that wear the same armor after upgrades, not that you need it since you can look at the unit card.

I wouldn't mind DLC if it meant the factions actually felt different, most Med2 factions are so laughly similar, not only just gameplay wise but like every eastern european or scandinavian uses the exact same VA, yet they bothered to distinguish between scotish and english VA's.

    >removing that gaylord mechanic that prevents you from having a unit without a general.
This is what truly ruined the Total War franchise. Instead of playing an actual strategy game, WH2 feels like you’re playing a RPG where you level up your characters and the units attached to them are just cool trinkets they can use in battle. The generals are no longer attached to an army to lead it, the armies are just stuff in the general’s (now known as Lord or Legendary Lord) inventory

Remove the Year counter. They already fudged it in Medieval 2 because they wanted you to progress from Mailed Knights to Gunpowder to the Americas in a reasonable number of turns so just get rid of Years and let generals live forever.

    Most people wouldn't even notice.

Also, don't worry about kids and growing up. If you really want descendants in then make them come out fully grown and ready for battle. It's not like having to wait for them to grow up added anything since nothing can happen to them. Plus in M2 you kept getting free generals trying to join you when you had more territories than generals so it's not like sons popping out of nowhere would be anything new.

      Anonymous

      >Let generals live forever
shit take. One of the great things of Medieval 2 was that race against the clock when my general turns 55+ and I feel the race against the clock to do the most with him before he passes away.
also removing the descendants remove the value of princesses, which were one of medieval 2's funny addition.

        Anonymous

Princesses sucked, though. You want to marry them off young so they can have more children but they'd only have 0-3 charm so whoever they marry will get some bad wife trait since less than 5 or so charm is considered worse than the non active princesses.

I mean, there was probably some way to use them properly but a diplomat can bribe people just as well without needing to expend themselves to do it.

Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be able to get a mod that'll kill off your generals after 80-100 turns or so.

so, Im doing a Med 2 run as Venice, with the twist being 'Cities only', the moment I capture a castle, I got to convert it to a city and so on.

let me tell you: it ain't worth it. your only decent melee infantry is the Italian spear militia and you'll have to cross your lucky stars to not get into a terrible fight early on since you won't be able to recruit ranged unit. there's about 110 turns left to the game, and conquering west and north is a fricking crawl.

      Anonymous

      ???

That's just how I normally play Venice. More cities means more income and more militia. Every city with barracks is producing militia to send out into the border wars of expansion like an unending tide of ants. Grow some places early so they can train crossbowmen and even cavalry.

Troops holding a formation during combat and not just becoming a giant rock concert, every total war game has this and it constantly bugs me.
Skirmishing lasting more than one volley and then the charge.

          Anonymous

          >Troops holding a formation during combat
Cathay in Warhammer 3 already does this. It's only use for me is keeping the troops clear of spells. Doubt it'd have much use otherwise, especially considering that without their arbitrary defense boost that they supposedly have for keeping the formation it's actually worse than just letting troops act on their own, fighting the enemy as seems sensible. Is that even realistic? Keeping a straight front line? I mean, yes, for pikes, but the games with pikes do that already. I was thinking more about would you really expect soldiers to not attack opponents because they're 3ft out of reach because that would mean moving forward.

Plus what would you have the troops do if the enemy charged the corner of their formation? hold and have the corner troops get outnumbered or break formation to put up a fighting front? Maybe wait for the player to tell them to break and hold till then?

          >Skirmishing lasting more than one volley and then the charge.
How many volleys sounds right to you?
