Ganker is full of dumb children who have mindbroken themselves into not being allowed to like anything ever. Hell, most of them don't even know why Metroid Dread's mere existence is so notable.

it has the usual butthurt sperg who tried to create a gay fandom war with hollow knight but outside of that I'd say it's one of the best received switch exclusives on Ganker

        >fandom war with hollow knight
There are many reasons why that was frickin' stupid, but chief among them is that Samus would immediately adopt the Knight as her precious tiny son.

yeah, Samus Aran is the galaxy's most famous cat lady after all.

        >Hollow Knight good, Metroid bad because ... Muh reviews! Muh runtime!
As if the same amount of content is somehow made more worthwhile if you stretch it thin across a 15 hour playthrough
It's in dreads favor that a lot of the padding can be skipped

          >same ammount of content
okay thats just either delusional, or youre assuming things about a game you know nothing about
You are comparing 40+ bosses against 10+ bosses
The extension of the main quest for the better ending (fighting dream bosses for the ascended nail -> white palace & queens gardens -> revisiting birthplace) singlehandedly accounts for more than dread's entire first playthrough's playtime, in a game with lots of sidequests and progressions

It's a 7/10 game easily. Really good at parts, but too cinematic in other parts. I don't care about Samus' past, and hearing her talk was disgusting.

Sakamoto really needs to stop trying to "humanize" Samus. She needs to be a cold, emotionless murdering robot. That's when Metroid is at its best.

        Anonymous

Samus can be a killing machine but only if Metroid 6 opens with live footage of you being slaughtered by her.

I know people are gonna say "well that's only the first part" but that part shouldn't even exist, if it's not gonna be a challenge. I really don't understand the idea of defending glorified spectacle fights. This isn't Borderlands, it's Metroid. the game cares way too much about spectacle.

Who plays Metroid for muh lore and muh dialogue? It's a VIDEO GAME. That means gameplay is more important. Right?

            Anonymous

You still need context and that's what cutscenes are for. You're not losing gameplay just because she got a cutscene literally just saying "I'll take care of the bird homosexual"

              Anonymous

              >you still need context
That's just a lie that you've been feed by the mainstream gaming industry. The truth of the matter is that the best games of all time don't even have characters, let alone backstory or lore or context. You're just a shape moving on a background against other shapes. Did pac-man need a 50 hour lore study on how the ghosts died, or how power pellets came to be? Did Pong need a massive cinematic intermission where the main character goes through a tragic death scene? No, of course not. The games just didn't need it, and they definitely wouldn't have benefited from it.

                Anonymous

Right you fricking triple Black person but you still get context in pacman you stupid frick, you get all of the ghost's names. Metroid is far more complex than pong, it has a structure that needs context.
Super Metroid got the intro, OG Metroid got the shitty mistranslated manual, Doom still had a fricking story. Pointing you at the next objective and telling you to play the game is not detrimental to a videogame.

                >Metroid is far more complex than pong, it has a structure that needs context.
It really doesn't. At the end of the day you're just killing everything and blowing up robots and fighting a giant endboss. None of the story matters, and if anything Dread is willing to retcon as much as possible just for the plot to make sense.

                >you blew up the X at the end of Fusion
                >oh wait nevermind, there's actually more X here on this new planet

                >here's this new father figure that actually manipulated Samus since birth to be the ultimate warrior, and he was never in any previous game prior, except for one scene at the end of SR
                >oh and he's dead

                >anything X consume become mindless monsters
                >except these enemies because the chozo are special or something

That's why the story doesn't matter and should be as minimal as possible. Look how many times they asspulled Ridley into being in a game for no reason. Infact they'll bring him back AGAIN for no reason, using some wacky science mumbo jumbo straight out of marvel movie.

                >he's a clone
                >he's a shadowy version of himself
                >he time traveled to fight Samus again!
                >he's an X clone, Fusion actually had multiple X versions of Ridley, but one flew away before things exploded

And this is fine for the sake of gameplay purposes, the story doesn't have to make sense, but let's not pretend that it has any meaning, when there's never any solid structure and they'll just undo the story at any time, for the sake of convenience.

If they really wanted to be serious, then they would stop with the asspulls. That means Ridley can never come back under any circumstances, the X cannot come back, and the space pirates can't come back if Samus blew up all of their bases. Chances are, however, that all of them will conveniently have a magic explanation as to how they came back. So there's no point in ever showing investment in the story.

The first game on NES literally had it's lore explained in the instruction booklet.

Metroid wasn't arcade style were the goal was points, it's an action adventure game.

Look at this for example. It's unnecessary clutter. You never see a fed in the game.

Even though the SA-X was scripted, it still made you feel like it could be anywhere. The Emmis never leave their zones, so they're too predictable.

I fully expected EMMIs to break out of their zones later in the game.

EMMIs are doomed on a gameplay level and letting them break free of their zones wouldn't fix that unless it also changed their behavior so that hiding from them was actually a valid tactic.

      completely disagree

I played it 4 times back to back to get the zero suit illustration and had a lot of fun, once you know what to do you can finish the game very quickly and optimizing movement is very satisfying

trying all the various sequence breaks also adds a bunch of replayability, the route can be quite varied if you use all the tricks (not talking about the autistic speedrun shit like phasing through walls and floors, just movement tricks)

The elevators in SM and the GBA games, hell even the prime games, didn't take a full minute of loading. Wouldn't be too surprised. Development apparently started pretty quickly after Dread released and became an instant hit. Plus, Nintendo seems to have realized that while Metroid isn't gonna make Mario or Zelda money, it's still a respected name that brings in a tidy profit. So we've actually been getting a decent amount of content lately.

I still believe in Metroid's potential to be a bigger franchise for nintendo. Not Mario/Zelda level, but like a 5-10 million unit seller. They just need one game to really penetrate the mainstream. Prime 4 is the best chance so hopefully they don't frick it up.

Ah. giving new talent a chance to shine is good, but maybe not on a title that's such a big deal. For a nigh-mythical game like Dread, they should've gotten a veteran composer.

        Anonymous

It's weird, because they seem to keep flip-flopping on whether they want bombastic area music, or subdued ambience. It's been this way since Fusion, which was far more subdued than Super, but in which Prime still maintained some amazing tracks with good melodies.
Prime Echoes kept it going with some of my favorite music from the franchise, but then Prime 3 backpedaled, and so did Other M. Then Samus Returns brought back the Metroid II music, and some nice new tracks and remixes, and then Dread backpedaled on that.

Dread didn't even include a remix of the Red Soil area of Brinstar, did it? Or did it? I can't recall now.

I honestly like flashy QTEs, especially when they show Samus off being a complete badass, but it does ruin the immersion when you do the exact same QTE with the exact same animation like four times in a row.

              >free damage
Why do you want this in a video game? Nothing should be free. It's the same stupidity behind Zelda bosses that get stunned and then stay down for 5 minutes, so you can wail on them without worry.

It's not free if you actually have to time a parry or dodge.

You're also just cherry picking the first bossfight.

                >Why do you want this in a video game? Nothing should be free
I see you missed the "get rewarded" part of the post, like the moron you are.

Your REWARD for the doing the block right is free damage

Yes, and? That shouldn't be something that warrants a reward. It'd be like giving Mario 99 lives every single time he successfully jumps over a pit. Yes, you're supposed to jump over the pit, but that's not some celebration that warrants jerking off the player. This is supposed to be standard. Your reward should be limited to "not taking damage". That's all a successfully parry should reward. Anything else is coddling the player.

This is bait. The ENTIRE GAME is predicated upon the foundation that a successful parry grants you a window for free damage. That's the only purpose of the mechanic.

Maybe it shouldn't. It's one of the reasons why I dislike the stagger mechanic from Armored Core 6. Battles shouldn't be formulaic "I get free damage because I pressed a magic button" situations, they should be constant shooting and dodging of attacks until someone dies. That worked for metroid for 30 years.

ok then, it's good. Very solid metroid game, but not on the same level as Super. The level design and music are a little disappointing but the core gameplay is fun. Also as a conclusion to the 'metroid arc', it's satisfying and retrospectively feels like what the other games were leading up to. I give it a 7.5 maybe 8/10. If the next one can open up the design a bit more and have a stronger ost I will be very pleased.
