for some reason people still think you can't play steam games offline

The people making these threads dont actually play videogames, they just want to stir pseudo /misc/ discussions.

for some reason people still think you can't play steam games offline

Offline mode has never worked for me. It tells me I need to sign online first to go into offline mode. Sorta defeats the purpose.

        Anonymous

It usually works, but there are a few caveats.
First of all, if you have pending updates to Steam itself then it won't work. Let it update when it asks.
Second, you need to have Steam saving your credentials (see pic, this box must not be ticked).
Third, a game that had pending updates when you went offline won't work.

          Anonymous

I don't usually have any of those as issues, I'm online, steam goes down, and if I'm already online, it works. But if, say, my own internet is down and I want to play my games, it will just say "You need to sign in to enter offline mode" and that's it. Never had an issue with steam maintenances, just when my own internet is down for an hour or two. Really blows though.

            Anonymous

Yeah the problem is that if you trigger any of those 3 issues, you won't be able to play the game you want, which might happen if you're used to a working connection.
If your internet is unreliable then make sure you keep both Steam and the games you play up to date and it should work.

              Anonymous

              I do
and I'm telling you, I don't have any of those issues, but if I were to unplug my ethernet right now, and open steam, I would try to start in offline mode and it would say "Unable to start in offline mode, connection error". It has just NEVER worked for me. Thankfully I DO have a stable connection, but no fix has ever worked for me, and steam support is about as helpful as mental stability in a 'higher education' institution.

                Anonymous

The reason I'm saying all that is because I've tried that very same thing, unplugging the ethernet and seeing how Steam reacts, and every time it just asks me to start in offline mode and lets me play all the games I already have installed.
Even so I much prefer options that let you not use a client at all just in case, such as GOG's offline installers, but still I never have issues with Steam even when my connection goes down.

                Anonymous

I know, I appreciate you saying it, just saying it must be something to do with my hardware, but thankfully it's uncommon enough to not really bother me.
And yeah, I haven't bought a lot on steam in many years, since they stopped doing flash sales in holiday events, really. The sales are no better than average prices on key sites, so, I just use those, or I go to gog, or frick, if I'm honest, even origin is better at giving me access to my games at any time.

                Anonymous

Yeah I get your point I think. Even though Steam "works" for me because I don't have any problems with it right now, I'd much rather have all my games as offline installers GOG style because even if everything works right now, there's no guarantee it'll work tomorrow.
Which reminds me, I need to refresh my offline GoG library backup once again.

Reminder that bots and shills were both programmed to "disrupt Steam's organic traffic."
Note that these threads have no educational intent (for example, to show solutions how to play Steam games offline, or even discuss possible alternatives that are better for us gamers/consumers), they're basically marketing campaigns that use pejorative images/memes/terms to try to demoralize Steam users.
Finally, see that the possible human shill behind these threads have extremely limited knowledge of games and Steam itself.

      >these threads have no educational intent
There still might be dumb Steam users who think they own the games they lease from GabeN.

In the absurdly unreasonable situation you're suggesting, I'd lose my games.
The same as if the bank I have all my money in would disappear overnight, I'd lose all my money.

        >In the absurdly unreasonable situation you're suggesting
Ok, so push it forward to 5 or 10 years from now. You will eventually lose all your games. There is zero promise to keep your library in perpetuity.

          Anonymous

Not that anon, but if steam goes away and I lose everything I will simply raise the flag from then on. As long as steam works I don't mind waiting for a great deal or humble bundle to buy shit I want, but if I can't do that I will simply get everything I want day one. Of course I can do that right now, but I like the easy of buying/use/playing with steam. No steam and I have no excuse to give corporations/companies/developers any money.

Realistically speaking, Steam won't go down within 5-10 years.
Steam is bigger than any single console. Even if Valve ended up in a dead-end situation where they have to sell the company, which is extremely unlikely, "Steam" itself won't be dissolved within 10 years because it's more valuable than Xbox or Playstation, perhaps even more valuable than Nintendo.

That's not how it works. kiddo. The government will step in if this were to happen. FDIC in the USA is one example.

Simple as. Not that different from patching older games that don't work on new hardware.
If you're afraid of this shit, you need to be prepared, now whine about it. This shit can happen to any company even without all the drm nonsense.
