WoW killed that entire genre creativity.
By the time WoW finally started to die, the genre itself was already dead and buried by lack of innovation.
Maybe in 20-40 years it will pop out of nowhere again, provided the world dodged the looming Bronze-age-tier collapse.

The vast majority of people playing MMOs are the same people playing MMOs for the past 20-30 years at this point. They just splinter off to play other MMOs or moved on to other games.

RIOT has the best chance to start the next MMO age since it has enough money and mass as a company to advertise the frick out of it and catch zoomers in the game. That or they will make WoW 2 Riot Bugaloo funneling the MMO crowd back into the game for a while before it declines.

They could be making a DAoC/ESO/Warhammer style game. Territory control while using more combat akin to Wildstar and City of Heros.

Basically huge swaths of PvE shit and raids and a telegraph based combat system with more buffing debuffing than direct healing. And tossing the PvP into Faction based zone territory control

Territory control gets old real fast. Nothing sucks more than spending all last night fighting over a piece of land, go to sleep, only for the japs or euros to take it back. Repeat forever.

              For this you need:
              > For the raids be able to be done periodically but one or two times a week
              > For the raids to not be instanced: so everyone participate and number of players (not only level) is a factor, But you need the game to be insanely optimized
              > For the players to have options to participate, be it logistically, by spiying, using range o being on formations. So everyone can participate without being overwelmed by a lvl 100 with all the items
              > To transform the land like in valheim and for these structures to decay. So you can make cities around nodes of resources.
              > For the equiptment to decay: so you have some players that are blacksmiths, alchemist, etc...
              > To have caravans and be able to steal from villages without conquering, so you have spountaneos pvp.

PvP has no place in any MMO whatsoever. It has never improved or added literally anything of worth at any point in any MMO. You know why people constantly complain about MMO PvP not being good? It's because it's inherently bad, and you CAN'T make it good. You might as well be complaining that feces isn't tasty, and that all your changes to the person's diet and adding seasonings to their feces isn't fixing it. The fact that it's shit is fundamental to what it is. The only good option is to stop eating shit, and stop trying to put PvP in MMOs.

          Based take.

          Early Runescape?

The wildy's most valuable aspect was being able explain how fricking terrible it is to go into to your friends who don't play runescape. PvP is so worthless that they finally removed the duel arena recently because nobody uses it anymore. The allure of MMOs has never been competitive PvP, it's always been the community aspect of the game. Completing quests, grinding skills while chatting with whoever else is around grinding with you, and maybe some minigames. The competition aspect is basically the same as irl, you win by having high stats and cool stuff. I don't think PvP should be removed completely but it should never be a main focus of an MMO because then it quickly becomes unplayable for everyone who isn't a high level veteran and the meta of the game has to be constantly rebalanced until it's complete dog shit, which means the value of items would fluxuate wildly on a regular basis and the in game economy would be fricked leading to people giving up on the game after losing like 90% of their bank value because they invested all their money in buying items for a specific meta that just got nerfed to shit and now all that stuff is worthless.

Funny enough wow got it right with pvp early on. Needing to go to the actual battleground facilitated world pvp and interaction by funneling people to certain places.
Alterac Valley was the ultimate pvp experience before it got streamlined and ruined later on. It was a large pvp zone that gave people who don't necessarily enjoy pvp objectives they could accomplish that would help out their team without having to be sweaty 360 no scope rogues.

Balancing is bad. If everyone's equally viable and effective, then that either means your content is mechanically fricking nothing, or everyone's playing the same damn character. Or both, like post-wrath WoW and all its clones.

Characters should have their own domains where they frick shit up, and they should have weaknesses. Like DOTA, or literally any RPG. That's how you make things dynamic and interesting. Don't have a mez? Well shit, we'll just have to make do, fricking improvise. That's an experience. Contra "oh, this guy does 3.5% less DPS while pressing 123123123", that's nothing.

I'm not talking about that simon says crap where you don't stand in the fire (wow!), or click some fricking crystals. I'm talking about what your character can do, and that died with that "bring the player, not the class" bullshit. There's no difference between what anyone is doing, they're all just spinning plates pressing 123123123 while playing the same piss-easy game of DDR (that's your boss mechanics). It's not the least bit interesting, and it's not dynamic at all. It's completely scripted and plays the same every time. If someone's not very good at going 123123123, or stands in the fire and dies, it doesn't change a thing. You keep pressing 123123123, and when Simon says jump, you jump. Just like before. Either you have enough leeway to pull though, or you try again. Nothing changes, because you can't do nothing. There are no mechanics at play. Either you do more damage, or you do less, that's all. That's the entire range of experiences in a "game" like that. Five idiots dancing to the same tune while going 123123123. That's the entire game. Maybe someone stumbles, maybe they don't. How very exciting.

If I had to guess, I'd say the removal of all the game mechanics is probably why they doubled down on scripted bossfights (what you seem to think mechanics are). When you can't do anything at all, they needed some other way to keep you busy or it's not much of a game at all. So they crammed it chock-full of what's essentially quick time events. Quick! Press "W" to walk out of the fire! Oh, what a game.

WoW is the biggest MMO in existence and it doesn't even have sliders for character customization. You're dreaming if you think this kind of gameplay is possible because it requires very constant game updates to not run out of content. The whole point of MMOs is to recycle content and produce as little as possible. That's what the genre is.

What you're asking requires a shit load of resources, in many aspects. Developers, designers, producers, directors, artists, testers, and so much more.

What you lot seem to forget, is that video games, at the end of the day, is just a means to an end, your attention, your information, and your money. If putting forth so many resources proves to be not only economically feasible but worthwhile for the team behind the game then maybe such a venture is worth the hassle. But in business and finance, the name of the game is to produce as much output with very little input.

Gamers like you, have to prove to businesses that you and your desires are worth investing in. But, we vote with our dollars, so if most consumers are voting for mobile games or click-and-point fetch quest games, then that is exactly what will be made ad infinitum, but obviously with a prettier than last year's package and with a minor tweak here and there.

Do you know how many resources are required to make MMOs that slightly resemble isekais like SAO or .hack//sign? Hundreds of millions. Other than a few neets and otakus here and there, no one is going to play such a vast game for an extended period of time. As a result, no one is going to invest in it.

          Anonymous

No, this shitty corporate ass sucker take should go to hell. As a consumer it's not my responsibility to make a good game for the company. I am not concerned with what it takes to make video games. If they want resources, they should work for them. Twisted people like you should stop accepting mediocre passionless slop.

            >it's not my responsibility to make a good game for the company

But it is. The reason why the war on drugs is a losing uphill battle is because consumers of those organizations prove with their money how much of a utility drugs that you could get from a guy around the corner is. As long as there are people who are willing to vote for the games that you abhor (again, as a consumer, you vote with your money), the more of those games that you will see.

You're not wrong, that's the reason. You can look at Genshin, no one attempted a gacha of that scale before it because it was too risky and that's one of the reasons it succeeded as much as it did, all it took was it being a passion project of the CEO (or so I've heard).

This is impossible because people have no reason not to kill and destroy. Because it's a meaningless videogame people will always devolve to their baser instincts. It would be impossible to build or preserve anything because the number of people that would want to build a log horizon style world would be dwarfed by the amount of people that would want to grief and destroy it and if you disallow one than you are really creating a world that can be truly changed by your will.

This is possible but only with AI tools. Once that shit becomes able to generate content on a fly, we might see deep MMOs that actually have generated content like this.
Of course everyone and their mother will make their own ONE OF A KIND MMO so playerbases will be spread thin, but nothing an AI (N)PC can't fix, right? AI simulated players, discussion boards, perfect for you to self-insert.

Dunno, watching a gameplay video it look like every 2010s asian MMO ever, with "kill 10 brown fox" then "kill 20 angry brown fox" in guise of adventure, and 6 gorillions cooking, flower-arranging, etc skills - that do nothing interesting outside of giving you +7%XP and +5.2%Gold or some other shit buff that does nothing gameplay-changing for combat/adventure/etc nor is interesting to do by itself.

Am I mistaken and the game has more to offer than that, or you just actually consider this peak gameplay?
'cause I feel like I played a good handful of games that were exactly like this one back when I was a poorgay kid trying all the random asian MMOs.

        Anonymous

Yes watching gameplay of a game from 2003 is gonna look like that. The life skills are all used to just make you gear/money.
Some of the non combat skills like commerce or alchemy though have a lot of depth to them. Commerce for example has trade routes in the main continent, and the other two. Has bartering, new mounts to ride on, clothing that can be crafted, good to create and barter yourself, a smuggler, reputations for every city, seasonal system with ranking among playing, bandits that will attack you, a wanted bounty system to find the bandits.
Alchemy lets you make it rain, or duplicate items, or convert one thing into another, or there's just straight combat alchemy.
Sometimes you just gotta let your brain work a little and instead of just seeing "im clicking" you see the greater scene and become your character. It's just clicking but you're making bows to become a better carpenter then making arrows to increase your damage, then using wood from the bows to make a fire in the dungeon so you can cook a party buff, etc.
I'm pretty bad at explaining why it's so good but I've enjoyed it a lot for someone who picked it up in 2021.

Because most gacha are quick cash grab, the one that last long where never planned too.
Companies who made those plan to milk shit as hard as possible then half-ass a new game when the current one is losing steam.
Making the app's spaghetti code server-independent would be way too many man-hours for something that won't much more money anyway.

Genshin might change that tho, now that they demonstrated you can get *way* more profit by quarter-assing the game & keeping the cash-shop reasonable instead of half-assing it & cranking up the judaism.

Here is how we fix mmos.
    >make a fun (pay once own forever) single player action rpg that has a multiplayer element that allows you to take your characters and all their loot into online versions of the worlds in the single player
    >there is no incentive to cheat because anyone can just cheat in items and the fun comes from the gameplay
    >cheated items and characters that use them are marked as cheaters and you can just not interact with them if you want. (this solves the "cheated items in the economy" problem)
    >allow peer hosted games
    >no games as a service bullshit
    >no anticheat that scrapes data off of your pc
    >no p2w mechanics
    >don't cater to homosexuals that rush through the game and only make expansions when the majority of players have done all the content
    >give community modding tools
    >allow user generated content and watch what the community makes for ideas on what to implement into the base game
    >every cosmetic option has a percentage chance to drop from mobs
    >expansions that are just like whole other games drop every few years and cost a fraction of the base game

I mean it's quite simple. Make phantasy star online with a bigger world and then make cosmetics and items periodically to keep the content going forever (and eventually expansions with new maps, bosses etc). Then just make expansions that have more fun content. Even if the game's multiplayer dies the game would still exist on fan hosted servers and fans wont get fricked out of their characters and hours. If you cater to the player and let the player have this kind of fun, they will just have fun and keep playing the game.

Phantasy Star Online is an MMO (or at least, I would give it that title) and it was basically just that. It worked and it was fun.
If you made this game I assure you that it would have a decently large community of players and people would genuinely enjoy it.
The way modern players play MMOs is primarily by themselves to do story content and then online to do raids, so making a single player game that has the MMO world on the side just makes sense. If FFXIV had a single player mode and wasn't a subscription based mmo I would actually fricking buy and play the shit out of it but I wont cause I know that paying for online is just not a functional business model to facilitate fun.
This is why MMOs are dead. Nobody wants to pay forever to play a game that will eventually disappear entirely.
MMO players no longer care about being immersed in a world and being forced to interact with other players so make the MM part optional and boom, MMOs are fixed. Simple as.
Fans that want more serious MM gameplay can just mod that into their server of the game. Everyone just wins and the game probably doesn't die because of how consumer friendly it is.

I know this sounds like a cope post but it's just true. All my old Neocron and Phantasy Star Online friends just kinda want some iteration of this now that the novelty of being online and talking to people from anywhere in the world is wearing off.
I don't think something like this would take too many resources to make either and with enough fans it would just thrive.

          Anonymous

MMOs are fun because you see people in the open world, even if you aren't doing content with them. If you disagree, then again, you aren't looking for an MMO. I personally also hate sub fees but the other option is p2w which obviously isn't great either.

There is no reason singleplayer content is in an MMO and forced to be there forever until the game disappears forever. Make the Massively Multiplayer part completely optional and then make a genuinely consumer friendly game. The fans will do the rest of the work.

No anon. You make a MULTI player game with optional single player elements.
                Not the other way around.

No. I want the singleplayer content to be offline.
Why would I want to pay a subscription for a game that will eventually die to only play the singleplayer for the most part. It makes no sense.
I want to play the game by myself and occasionally go online and party for huge raids.
I want PSO/PSU but again. The online just should be completely optional at this point when the business model of FFXIV and new WOW already do this.

                >open world sandbox

Not sure how it would work otherwise. If you can't destroy shit then the constructible area need to expand real fast every update so people can keep building shit.

also this, minecraft is literally more of an MMO than any of the big mmorpgs

I should've know a Lain larper is an anti-anticheat schizo stuck in the 2000s.

anticheat is literal garbage, the game should just be fun enough where people just don't want to cheat because of how fun the game is without cheating. and if they like cheating they should just be allowed to cheat but make interacting with cheaters completely optional.

Again, you miss the point of an MMO.
Even if I am running around the world on my own farming or adventuring I should still have a chance to run into another player. The game should encourage me to inter act with said player somehow.
What you are asking for is fricking raiding/dungeon lobby simulators. Where nobody gives a frick about the world (of warcraft) because you don't share it with other players.
The world needs to be consistent and inhabited by other people meaning it can't all be phased and instanced to separate said players.

I mean yes it should incentivize multiplayer but they DON'T do that anymore and the novelty of that has worn off, so just cater towards the singleplayer audience and then mod it in like i said in my other post.

There is literally nothing wrong with the massively multiplayer online being a whole separate thing that incentivizes talking to people and partying with people and making friends. This is literally what makes PSO work, you just have fun regardless of whether or not you play online.

                >"What you are asking for is fricking raiding/dungeon lobby simulators. Where nobody gives a frick about the world (of warcraft) because you don't share it with other players."

No. Just NO. I'm asking for a game with a world that I care about akin to ffxiv but with all of the story content being a one time purchase game that i can play forever online or offline like PSO. I want to care about the world and interact with players, I just want to do that SOMETIMES not ALL OF THE TIME. It's a big difference. The games are also already designed in this way so why not split the singleplayer things into an offline mode anyways? None of my friends play MMOs anymore either so why would I make friends in a game that incentivizes playing by myself and pay a subscription fee for it? This shit doesn't make sense.

PSO had the entire "community driven world' thing done right and no other games (other than phantasy star games) have captured that feeling for me.

I described my perfect situation for MMOs and if they were just not games as a service games then it would solve 80% of the issues I personally have had with the genre since fricking 2010.

I mean for most people that's what already exists except with an additional option that they would never choose. So you just sound kind of moronic.

I'm just anti games as a service and anti-anti-cheat and anti-games dying. What I want is just genuinely better for the genre at this point.

                >I mean yes it should incentivize multiplayer but they DON'T do that anymore
I have to go to work so I must rush this.
But you just said the heart of the issue.
These games aren't mmo's anymore. They are singleplayer games with multi player lobbies.
You want something that is NOT an mmo.
I want an mmo. That means multiplayer and player interaction is the main design focus. Why must I go to a private server to get such an experience?

                >I want an mmo. That means multiplayer and player interaction is the main design focus. Why must I go to a private server to get such an experience?

I mean, it'd still be an mmo under what I want, it'd just have the option to not do the MM part of an MMO which just works in favor of what they are today. If the MMO community as a whole wanted forced player interaction they'd make in-game systems that make using discord worse than just using what's already in the game.
What I want doesn't stop you from getting your multiplayer only experience, in fact it just helps you get that and get the tools to make exactly what you want for yourself.
There is no reason the "offline game + mmo content" game thing can't work, like i said PSO on a larger scale would just work.

The game didn't change, go play any private server pre renewal 2nd jobs only, the game is exactly as you remember but you would still say the game doesn't feel right, or it wasn't as good as you remember, because it's exactly that, memories, what you wish for is not a game, you want to go back to a time where you were probably happier just let go, it's easier than being like all the mmogays that deposit all their hopes on Ashes of Creation wanting to be the one who will save MMOs when it's just another WoW/FFXIV copy

I can't speak for RO, but I went back and played OSRS for the first time in years like a year ago until I got another job and didn't have the time for it anymore and honestly, while it wasn't quite as enjoyable as it was back in 07, it was actually pretty close, much much more enjoyable than I expected it to be. There's still hope to recapture most of that feeling again if a new MMO comes out and does it right.

As good as before but it requires too much times and there are more games to play, once the population drops it snowballs along fun had.

RoTMG sucks because permadeath + bullet hell is a shitty combination. I really liked it but I had one too many bullshit deaths (whether it was bugs or the servers being shite)

It's what kept the game somewhat healthy but this is why I'd recommend item drop over character death, at least you wouldn't have to grind exp and pots back, have a chance to get it back plus drama fuel. Also could just keep duplicate or slightly weaker gear in storage.

Hugely taxing on computer graphics meaning you'll have smaller player bases and bug fixing and content production will be much more difficult.

Dev's have said they hate how p2w games are nowadays and are going to limit it. I wouldn't be surprised if they bait and switch like they did with BDO at the start, 6-12 months of no p2w then slowly adding it in.

p2w says nothing about the game itself though, it's just an extra feels bad. Like the wow token got added and the actual game didn't change at all. Plus anything with an economy is automatically p2w. Basically I'm gonna translate that as, "it's p2w, but we'll hide enough that we can charge you out the ass just to play." You could almost view it as a negative to be honest.

MMO's are forever dead because they were created to solve a problem that doesn't exist anymore. When MMO's were new human interaction outside of your immediate circle of real life social circle was rare. The idea that you could talk and game with someone halfway around the world was a new and unique concept. Social media and smart phones didn't exist at that point and the internet was still in its infancy.
Now we have too much interaction and a majority of mmo players go out of their way to avoid social interaction and the games are now developed to allow you to do just that.
The entire reason MMO's existed is now a detriment instead of a selling point. I no longer want to talk to or interact with every tom dick and harry in the world. Without that need mmo's cease to have a reason to exist since the gameplay is inherently weaker than any single player game can deliver.

not him, but id love to answer, im the vote with your money guy, who posted earlier in this thread. to adress your point- yes, the free market and its constituents are absolutely at fault. i'm not condemning the free market, but the results that we've seen with MMOs are but a prime example of its function. i'll reiterate my point from earlier: as long as there are consumers who are willing to vote for the type of games that you happen to dislike, well unfortunately, that is exactly what you are going to see regurgitated on the market. people don't realize the authority they have because of the "just 1one person" mentality. but until you all seriously, somehow, and in some way, band together to make it known what type of video game you are really interested in, and stopped endorsing, either directly or indirectly, what you are not interested in, when enough of the votes are put forth, your voices and opinions will never be addressed. no one is ever going to take my proposition seriously because to most of us, it's just gaymes, but change only occurs due to sheer concentrated will.

You guys know what must be done but no one actually cares enough to do anything about it. you guys are practically just preaching to the choir.

People aren't ants you will never get some huge majority of gamers to collectively decide to put their foot down and not vote.
That's like saying haha well you wouldn't drown if I throw you in the ocean if you just don't breathe. It's literally impossible to collectively decide something as humans are individuals.
Therefore the systems are at fault and have to be changed because you can't change basic human psychology.

"The free market" is just a clever way of saying "totally unregulated business." Something that is an obvious detriment to pretty much everyone outside of the USA and even to plenty of people within the USA. Only an absolute numbskull would think letting corporations with billions of dollars take a hold of a market and strangle the life out of it because there were no regulations to stop them from completely ruining it for everyone who isn't them is a good idea.

WoW dungeons are linear but they still have skippable packs, occasional mechanics in trash, occasional backtracking, different routes (even if they lead to the same shit), crowd control, patrols, etc.
FFXIV dungeons are hallways with no gameplay besides AoE spam outside bosses and are always two pulls one boss repeated three times.

MMO players are already getting exactly what they want. You cannot fix what isn't broken.

The only way to "fix" the problem is to make MMOs bi-yearly. Every 6 months there should be a new big MMO and they should shut down the previous one. People only want to play the most popular MMO, but they won't migrate easily so the "most popular MMO" doesn't change easily, thus you need to shut down the previous one.

Here is how to fix MMOs:
    >no unreal engine, create your engine from scratch
    >no console or mobile ports
    >no cash and cosmetics shop of any kind
    >make it buy + pay to play with a trial like wow did in the past
    >focus on the gameplay and not the graphics or voice actors
    >balance between pve and pvp, do not cater to competitive pve or pvpers
    >NO ESPORTS SHIT
    >open world pvp
    >completely open world with little to no instancing
    >no data mining
    >focus should be on the journey and not the end game
    >raiding and gearing should not be the focus of the end game, but player interaction and character development and interaction with the world and other players
    >DO NOT MAKE YOUR CHARACTER TO BE THE CHOSEN ONE AND THE MOST POWERFUL BEING IN THE GAME
    >your character should feel weak and get stronger as you go on, but should still feel weak compared to factions and end game enemies
    >emphasis on world interaction and exploration
    >tons of RP content
    >little to no instant teleports/instant travel
    >not everyone must be equal, items, mounts, gears should have a meaning
    >no catch up mechanics and slow leveling to encourage people to play and develop only 1 character at a time
    >plenty of group content outside of instances/raids and no forced solo content
    >no cinematic cutscenes, quests or cinematic storytelling where you must save the world from an evil entity
    >the plot of the game should be irrelevant in the long term and run loosely in the background
    >players should find out about the lore by interacting with the world
    >lots of secrets and hidden stuff

No it's because you don't have to COMMIT to a class or spec, and that reason alone. If someone can reroll to a meta class and outdps you on a class you've been playing for years in 2 weeks, your game is fricking trash and not an MMO. FFXIV is the exact same way.

MMOs should have open world PVP except you can turn it off so nobody can attack you.

Then the game needs to spawn tons of bots that indistinguishable from real players, and always lower level than the players they encounter. Players can just turn off PVP and kill these low level bots and feel like epic PK masters since they never have to fight a player or anyone stronger than themselves, they'll applaud your game's open world PVP and go "see!! this is what i told you about!!".

Within 1 hour of any new region release you will have a datamined wiki and guides with every progression milestone, the community in game will expect you to have read this wiki for maximum efficiency and will drop you if you don't follow the meta. There is just no way to have fun with MMO players. To fix the genre you have to remove the players themselves.

No you just need to move away from raid-centered game design and back to the MUD/KMMO style of having different actual roles within the game world, mapping, crafting, farming rares, etc. The Holy Trinity is a horrific reduction of older MUD dynamics where you additionally had support and bursting roles and a notable difference between AOE and single-target centered classes, as well as multiple WAYS to get exp beyond just running theme park rides over and over.

That's because pure healing was always a broken role that wasn't fun in any content that they weren't absolutely required in. But the difference between AOE and single target healing used to be relevent, as was the difference between proactive shield healing and reactive HP healing.

You've never played a KMMO, I see. There isn't as much competition for party slots for non-raid content.

You know the real reason for this, right? People don't want MMO to just be real life. The closer you make an MMO to a "simulated world" the closer it becomes to a job, a life style. This is fine for a TTRPG, because you can easily skim over the boring things. Video games can't do that, they don't have a dynamic story teller. MMO are doomed to being a quick dopamine hit and then shame as people log off and wonder why they play.

The problem is that everyone who actually care about the internet and games are being hooked by the predatory psychologically manipulative addicting shit, so the only people making websites and games are people who are only in it for the money/career and thus incentivized to make more psychologically manipulative addicting shit since it's the most profitable.

WoW popularized "endgame" being the entire game and killed the genre. Before wow mmo's were actually mmo's with worlds that emphasized doing whatever you wanted and rewarded player interaction.
Raids are cancer and mmo's will continue to be cancer as long as they are the centerpiece of mmo design.
Most of the other stuff that people complain about in mmo's like class balance are only an issue because of raids.

If you want a co-op RPG with MMO elements, play WoW / FF
If you want to grind with a community of people and own territory, play EVE or Albion.

Large-scale gameplay / combat will never ever be interesting or rewarding because nobody has ever made a game where large scale combat is interesting.

FFXIV is not an RPG. You have no choice in what attacks you use, how you develop your character, or how to proceed through the game. You get a list of boxes to check and that's it. It's more like a visual novel with BMU elements.

MMOs need to get rid of RPG cancer to have any hope of being decent. The problem is that RPG elements are perfect for creating addictive gameplay loops, which have been refined and perfected for the purpose of keeping players trapped and milked like cows in a pen.

That's why there's no interest in making an MMO with actually good gameplay, it's actually counterproductive to keeping players addicted and milked because you would have to tone down the RPG bullshit. The more little numbers you have to keep pumping up on an endless treadmill, the better.

Planetside 2 is a better MMORPG than FFXIV.

      Consider:
You have 5 classes, all of which do wildly different things to support the team.
Within each class you have dozens of options, each of which helps you shoot different kinds of mans in different ways.
Progression can last for months to years and leads to players specializing in certain gameplay styles.
Many different ways to progress your character.
Instances can hold hundreds of players with individual parties of 8 to 32 working within that.
Runs on Linux, which makes it better by default.

You cannot have MMO genre because vast majority of MMO players don't want to actually play an MMO. They want an Ubisoft open world game with daily/weekly chores and small amount of coop content. As long as the prevailing logic is that you have to have 95% of the game be soloable, MMOs will remain an asocial genre.

        Anonymous

What I mean is, the game needs to be designed in such a way that it's always a better idea to group up than go solo, and encountering other players in the wild should be something positive, not negative.

Think about a game like old WoW. Most of the time when you encountered other players while questing, they were just an annoyance. They were stealing your mobs, quest items, and ore nodes. You thought to yourself you wish they'd frick off. That's horrible for an MMO. With newer expansion they tried to alleviate this in later expansion with personal loot and shared mob tags, but they still had some dumb systems in place, such as mob health increasing the more players attack it. Last time I gave WoW a chance was during Legion. I was soloing a big world quest elite, and another guy showed up and started attacking it. But that didn't make things easier, it made it harder for me, since he was just semi-afk autoattacking and boss health increased so much it practically doubled the time to kill the mob for me. So again, other players are still something you wish to avoid, they're just not as much of an annoyance as before. Still bad design.

Foxhole despite its problems is probably the most interesting modern MMO in that you need to work with other players to do anything of note while having the option to PUG as a grunt on the front. I look back at the days of UO, FFXI and SWG with sadness since the genre didn't expand past those in terms of what made MMO's awesome. Modern MMO's either go down the trap of basing their game around PVP or Raiding which are complete deadends at some point.

FFXIV is hardly an MMORPG. The world is instanced to hell, game looks and plays like something from the PS3 era with a shitty netcode on top and you need to slog through like 200h of story to "catch up" if you don't buy a boost.
Oh and it has microtransactions on top of a sub. I'm also pretty sure it's leaking players who came back for Endwalker, since the new storyline will take a long time before getting on ARR->HW->SB->ShB->EW epic level. It is THE best MMORPG on the market since WoW went p2w, but it doesn't mean it's very good.

It depends on the game. Old MMO's had an older playerbase and group-centric game play as a necessity so there was a basic etiquette and civility imposed. In games like FFXI and SWG it wasn't uncommon for people to get unofficially blacklisted if they acted like idiots. Modern MMO's are focused on a younger demographic with PC's that can do everything or only group up for five minutes so what's the point?

        Anonymous

Yep, the magic that made older mmo's work was NEEDING help to get anything meaningful done.
I've been playing mmo's for 2 plus decades and one of my best memories is all the way back in ffxi when I tried to get my first job class and was dying fighting the skeletons and a random white mage came by and offered to help and spent like 2 hours running around with me to help me get my job class and then asked if I was interested in joining his clan and from there branched out into all kinds of fun social interactions.
That would never happen in a modern mmo because I would just be able to solo everything and no one in encounter would ever have a reason to interact with me.

          Anonymous

when i think of mmos i think of real mmos like EQ and ffxi, ones where you actually needed others to progress. when homosexuals like you think of mmos all you want are dressed up single player games.

What? You're soloing mythic wow and savage ffxiv raids? What you want is right there and it's the 2 most popular MMOs right now. Go play them.

          Anonymous

Exactly, the magic of MMO's comes from unstructured, unplanned events that come from having an area and general gameplay that pushes player interaction. I remember early into playing SWG I met a Wookie, due to the language system we couldn't understand each other's text but we grouped up and did a bunch of missions together anyway. Eventually while regening at a scout camp we figured out we could teach each other the languages our PC's spoke and had a good laugh. Moments like this literally can't happen in a modern MMO because you're either on the leveling or end game gear treadmill with no reason to interact with others outside of instanced content. I know I'm a boomer when it comes to this but MMO's lost their magic over 15 years ago to appease players who wanted things to be 'faster'.

Convenience really is the killer of joy. It sucks because it's almost impossible to not try to make everything more convenient but once you do everything loses its magic and there's no way to go back because you just get frustrated with how inconvenient everything is compared to what you're now used to.

This is the sad truth, flying mounts and fast travel in general accelerated this. All my best mmo memories come from games before that shit was common place but I couldn't bring myself to go back and play that way. My brain is ruined by modern convenience.

Social media and online multiplayer becoming standardized destroyed MMOs. They never had good gameplay so people left once they could get their socialization elsewhere.
The only thing going for the genre right now is that there's a few ancient games with communities that still have a pre-2012 mentality.

You could only do this successfully as a singleplayer game. Once you make something multiplayer the spreadshiters and parsegays come out of the basement and pollute the gameplay loop with 'efficiency'.

So you wanted to 'be a little farmer who wagons his wheat to a town close to starvation to help it' well too bad. Some guy already figured out the optimal way to do it and completed the quest weeks ago by using multiboxed accounts.

You COULD do it in a multiplayer game, but it wouldn't be anything like what people consider an MMO, and it would have a playerbase so small that people consider it a dead game. There's a lot of things that can work beautifully if you're willing to look away from WoW as the template for MMOs, but there's almost nobody who can do that.

Quests exist to facilitate gameplay. They're there to move you from one set pieve to another. You're supposed to find the actual gameplay fun. If you complain about fetch and kill quests, that just means you don't actually find the game fun, and should seek another avenue of entertainment.

If you hate 99% of MMOs ever made and haven't enjoyed the genre in 2 entire decades, maybe you should accept you don't like MMOs.
You like the romanticized idea of an MMO fed to you from anime and movies. You don't like the practical end result of an actual MMO that doesn't die within a week. People like themepark MMOs. MMOs need people to survive. Therefore MMOs will always be themeparks.

Any other MMO that deviates from this formula attracts other players that hate MMOs like you and the game just ends up being a weird multiplayer action RPG that doesn't even feel like an MMO (see: New World).

This was basically Guild Wars. It was an MMO for people who hate MMOs, so it just felt like a weird single player game with optional multiplayer and light MMO combat.

Yes because wow ruined the genre, mmos were never designed as themeparks they were co opted.

                Anonymous

MMOs becoming theme parks was the inevitable result of the MMO industry. MMOs are beholden to player numbers. This gives more power to casual players. Casual players don't want a poopsock game where they have to play 15 hours of random bullshit to get their dopamine. They want to socialize and do some casual raids for new gear.

It's not that difficult to understand. Single player games are allowed to be more experimental because they don't have to maintain a consistent player base to survive. You will never have your autistic MMO because players don't want that. Just look at FF11 staying dead forever.

    >scrubs can team with tanks and healers to take on harder content
    >no money and limited inventory keep the economy fresh and active on player trades
    >simple graphics make it so a tons of players can be in a room, content is cheap to produce
    >instead of character deletion on death make it inventory drop, you could have friends pick it for you or randoms risk their lives to loot in the action. 100% drama fuel people would dab skill issue on graves or attempt to grief by luring mobs over, no need for pvp.
    >clearing content nets fame points that show up on a scoreboard that get reset on death however the higher the score the less impact low level content contributes to until it drop to 0, this would be purely for efame however unlike rotmg the score would show for alive instead of dead characters so they become targets.

        >needs a PvP game in a market already saturated with competitive games that actively incentivizes less player interaction
Most of these games are primarily cooperative experiences with tacked-on PvP. The competition is then between allies, and people striving for recognition in that setting grind their asses off alone so they can be the "guy with the big deeps" somewhere in life.

Pic related is proof positive already that faction-based PvP MMOs do increase player socialization.
