I'm gonna be playing FF14 Dawntrail in three months, MMOs seem OK to me. Sounds like more of an issue of there only being market room for one or two live service games at a time so there's literally no point in having more games than that available because they'll just eat shit.

      Anonymous

What people really mean by "MMOs are dead" is there will never again be another to bring so many players and attention to itself the way WoW did. Even if someone somehow developed a genuine 10/10 GOTY they'd be still releasing that game into an incredibly fragmented market where no one but the most hardcore dedicate themselves to just one game. That era of playing a single game for life is over.

WoW is also a product of it's time. It came out when the internet was still ''new'' or more of a wild west, and the community reflected that.

FFXIV has no design elements that are even reminiscent of an MMORPG.
At best it is a lobby-based low quality action game with no RPG elements and a handful of maps reserved for bots to gather materials at.

There is no persistent overworld and no overworld activities that engender emergent gameplay between players.
If FFXIV is an MMORPG, so is Fortnite, CoD, Monster Hunter and more. You are stretching the definition so wide in order to include FFXIV that you're also including any game ever made with a multiplayer feature.

because you generally don't know how long the first game spent in conceptual phase. basically, they had all the time in the world to flesh out ideas without it costing them anything. sequel is an entirely different matter as not only should it release in some reasonable time frame, but you also have to RUSH the brainstorming phase to hopefully improve the formula. either that or you play it too safe to the original, which players hate, or do something radically different, which they also hate. plain fact is most sequels just don't need to exist in the first place.

Most of the other publishers had a pretty clear timeline of their vidya development, usually because they released other games before that

        >Team Fortress 2, several major updates frick up the game and nerf most of the fun weapons
Please explain what those updates were, I never played tf2

Gun Mettle, Meet Your Match and Jungle Inferno.
Gun Mettle added CSGO weapon skins as an additional way to milk players.
Meet Your Match replaced the previous server browser with the current matchmaking system which also led to community servers falling in popularity because fewer people used the official server browser.
Jungle Inferno nerfed a lot of weapons, partly to appeal to the competitive scene, and it's not the only update that nerfed weapons.

        this video:

        ?si=laISMw_kN606GvF5
expresses some of my feeling about the worst update tf2 ever had, and it's still only scratches the surface. weapons updates are more nuance, but basically a bunch of fun (kinda broken) weapons were nerfed so they would appease compgays, and even after the nerfs compgays still wont allow them, so it was all in vain.

also for the the state of multiplayer games in general, watch this video:

        ?si=N2WjxLxyPhMGV1fV
it expresses another big sentiment i have on video games nowadays - they aren't really social. and it's sad.

          >No one cares about indieslop.
the amount of people interested is not indicative of the quality of the games in question, judge games based on their merit instead of how popular they are

I do and indie games are garbage in 99.9% of the cases. It's also weird to me that people pretend stuff like Helldivers is indie despite having major backing from big studios.

            >I do and indie games are garbage in 99.9% of the cases.
it's true, but that is kinda to be expected when the barrier of entry to making them is so small, pretty much anyone can make any sort of game they desire with minimal budget if they are willing to learn, there's like 20 new indie games coming out on Steam every day
with that said, why do you act like ALL of them are bad? There are good indie games in all kinds of genres, lumping them all in one pile is very shortsighted

    >RTS
Pretty similar to strategy. Recently the genre realized how far from RTS it has gotten and re-released some classics. C&C, AoE, Total Annihilation, Stronghold all got releases or free to play projects. Broodwar, SC2, and WC3 have all been hemorrhaging players and sponsorship for years now.

Most games are dead because shit economy effectively killed middle business in any form and it's been like that since 2008, everything now is either AAA slop or EA shit, indies that have one banger but after release never develop bigger projects, indie copies of old or more popular franchise, games under big publishers that might seem middle budget, but actually unfinished mtx ridden shitfest that can't even be considered in the category between indie or AAA, any game now is also 100% oriented for major profit or 100% focused on popular(leftist) political message, it is a one time wonder nowadays if a game releases with all the content planned by the devs instead cutting leftover or unfinished shit for dlc, it is impossible today for the devs to quickly develop sequel because publisher is hellbent on reaping profits from the first title until fanbase doesn't care anymore. The absolte state of industry, I wish for it to crash and burn, only starting anew would bring this vicious cycle to an end.
