The hardware will be powerful enough to run your own AI servers while playing the game at that point.

          Anonymous

I think it's more limited by whether the tech will ever be open enough for that, than whether hardware will allow it. This is technology that is currently exclusively accessible through subscription based SAAS; why would any company want to give up that cash cow by even so much as releasing a closed-source standalone product?

            Anonymous

It's not? You can easily run your own AI in your hardware, plenty of people are doing it

I don't see games having that anytime soon though. If we project hardware progress and AI progress it'll take several generations until we get to that point

              Anonymous

You can run some image generation stuff, namely stable diffusion.
Text synthesis of any reasonable quality is still completely locked behind OpenAI's servers. All services that you can think of that do it (e.g. NovelAI) just use OpenAI's API to get their results.

more likely people pay an extra $5 a month for an upgraded Gamepass that includes AI features that lets them use a certain number of AI generation calls per month, so the games they play take advantage of that when enabled

          Anonymous

No it fricking won't lmao. ChatGPT runs off clusters of 8 Nvidia A100, and that's JUST the generation side, the training side used over 10,000 GPUs

            Anonymous

It's definitely not feasible now but not out of question in the future.
Most people won't be training shit, and to run the model you mostly just need a lot of VRAM. I imagine generating just for yourself would be much less hardware intensive than responding to millions of prompts all over the world.

            Anonymous

The biggest limitation is VRAM, processing power is already there but the way these models work is that you need to load the entire model into VRAM. Graphics Cards are generally made with low amounts of VRAM because you don't need that much for gaming and AI scaling wasn't a major factor until recently. Going forward GPUs are going to be packed with VRAM and allow these models to run locally.

There's no rule that it breaks. It's no different to splicing the existing audio files in the game to make new dialogue lines, which plenty of old fun mods already do. Except this is doing it REALLY well to the point it sounds natural. If this is against the rules, then most NPC/world space modding is also against the rules since it re-uses the game's assets to create new things.

I'm shocked Nexus hasn't issued a ban statement on AI stuff yet. I can't imagine it'll take much longer all it's going to need is a high profile mod with a faked VA saying something triggering the right urinalist sees to write tweets about.

In theory this doesn't hurt anyone. Big VA's would never work with literally who modders, and small VA's will still be hired to voice original characters.

That said, it will take one moron to make a mod where popular VA spews a bunch of offensive shit for everyone to crack down hard on AI VA mods.

Artists are already seething and games haven't really begun using it. They will use it, but people whose livelihoods rely on them not using it will put up a fight. And fundamentally society and many of its rules exists for the people so it's not like people will just brush them off easily.

And when 3D AI tools come out it will be panic time for zillions of craftsmen across multiple fields.

VAs do have some power though, those guys guild up and whine pretty effectively. They're already getting paid to allow companies to use their voices via AI which is more than what illustrators are going to get in most cases.

              [...]
Sure it'll be cheaper but it will be more time consuming having to fiddle through all the options until you finally get what you want instead of just having the voice actor do it right from the get go. It'll also cheapen the product all together so big companies wouldn't be as inclined to use it. This would only be good for modding lines in games that already have decent voice actors to begin with.

              >Sure it'll be cheaper

and western VA as far as I can tell. It wasn't great to begin with and even in the cases where it was(Geralt for example), AI does his voice very well.

Not him but you can synthesize voices from nothing using AI, and you can turn anyone's voice into a voice actor using AI. The idea is that you don't need to hire someone talented, the AI will be able to do any voice however you want it.

Eventually it will be like an audition. You'll fire up VoiceActor.exe and type in your prompt, "angry gruff man, fantasy setting, american accent" then the AI will generate 9,999 ators for you and you'll sift through them until you get what you want. Very much like real life except cheaper and your direction will change the voice more. IE:

70% of your favorite AAA game was made in china, india, and other 3rd world shitholes. Sure they could've hired professionals from 1st world, but why bother when you can pay cents to get somewhat working code and fix it with patches later?
It will be the same with voice acting too. You could pay 20k and hire a VA or pay 1k for software and 2k for voice loicence and pocket the rest for CEOs bonus pay.

Nice percentage you pulled out of your ass third worldy. Look at any game that outsourced its work overseas, they end up flopping from lack of quality. Best example is Aliens Colonial Marines.

                >Best example is Aliens Colonial Marines.
Literally every Ubisoft game is outsourced, hence why they have like 1000 people in credits. All GaaS patches are outsourced too, it's cheaper and faster to overwork 3rd worlders for shit like gun models and textures, while your team makes the rest.

Next GTA will sell more copies than there are humans on earth despite this funny little frickup with trilogy.
Skyrim in space gonna be a hit despite literally every game released by bethesda in past 30 years been a buggy mess. And you can bet your pretty pink panties that they certainly exploring chatGPT implementation since M$ owns that b***h now.

The only one I agree on is Madden just because of the sportsfans buying every Madden and Fifa game and milking all the tards with the trading cards but the other two could go sour. If GTA 6 ends up being a worse GTA 4/5 then you can bet your ass it will hurt the sales and the company as a whole. And also Bethesda is already on thin ice from revealing the Starfield trailer showing how lackluster it was and especially after the whole Fallout 76 fiasco.

Games will absolutely use it. There is 0 doubt about it. VA is one of the more annoying parts of the game development and it requires you to lock your story months in advance so you won't have to schedule more sessions for new lines later.

If companies can just hire like 5 dudes who know how to works AI's make whole process so much faster.

So why the frick wouldn't games use it? You'll potentially save so much costs relating to hiring VA's. In addition, you aren't restricted by a finite amount of voices and have a near infinitive resource of NPC personalities, and expressions.
its not like the gaming industry is going to vastly change because a couple of voice actors cant find work anymore.

Quality is still not on par with the real thing, and there is probably legal issues too. But i would absolutely expect first AI voiced background NPC coming to games very soon. Technically High On Life already did it, but it was really minor inclusion I think.
