New DB player, how do I make this weapon work? Feels like all I’m doing is Blade Rush when it calls for it, and the switch skill that pops you up in the air that follows-up with riding the monster like a roller coaster. The damage seems good and I’m sticking to them like glue but my hunts are all around the 20min mark. Still doing MR hub quests so maybe it’s a question of gear?

Any skill recommendations to really help pop off? I’ve still got my SA narg build from launch because I dropped the game for a bit. Hard to shelve max WEX and part breaker but it’s mostly because I don’t really know what direction to pivot in.

generally DBs use the regular good blademaster skills + element of choice +5 pretty much every time.
So crit eye, atk boost (usually up to 4 since it's the bare minimum for the % increase), wex, element+5, chain hit, dereliction/bloodlust if you can fit them in, wirebug wisperer if you like using the drill a lot (although it's just a very good skill on dbs since their moveset is very bug intensive), crit element if you can fit it.
Choice between demon dance and feral depends on the monster's elemental hitzones (regular DD for high element, feral for the additional raw vs low element monsters), although demon mode has been buffed in sunbreak and provides additional element as well as requiring less hits to fill the archdemon mode bar.
No need for evade distance and the likes since dbs have a humongous amount of iframes between the shrouded vault and the demon flight. Protective Polish helps a lot since some of the best dbs have a tiny sliver of purple and you can get a lot of mileage out of it due to your attack frequency.
          Best dbs would be:
          - Fire: magmalmudron (element), wyvern lovers (raw)
          - Water: almudron (element), sacred espadas (raw)
          - Thunder: narwa (element), zinogre (raw + slots)
-Ice: kushala (everything), aurorac**t is a good substitute until the point you can craft em
          - dragon: valstrax (everything) waga ra tree is the best you have until valstrax since malzeno's can't be fully upgraded until scorned magna

          Happy hunting anon

          1) Element Attack Up
          2) Chain Crit (Slightly nerfed on DBs but you'll have it up constantly, and +15 raw and +12 element with Lv3 is pretty fricking good when you hit so fast)
Then just whatever for damage and sharpness. Evade Extender so you can scoot after monsters like a toddler on bath salts.

You will get better, if you want to be able to better keep up with monsters, both gun lance and insect glaive can keep up without sheathing. Don't rush through low/high rank with new added weapons and armor because that's the tutorial and gives you time to figure things out and build up your collection of weapons. Try playing without the dog, palicos have nuch more utility and can speed up progress significantly of you bring two with the pilfer ability.

I heavily recommend ditching the defender weapons and armor as they are a crutch before Sunbreak after which you will have to actually learn some basic skills but in a much more difficult environment

dog helps with mobility until you unlock the sub bases then you can pick two cats (two gathering cats to help with materials for example or use assist for traps, healing can mitigate hits you already took and allow you to focus on damage)
two dogs is really good for status so if you give them two sleep/para sticks, you can get many openings

I never really cared about early sets because you just don't have enough skills available to do anything meaningful.

      >maxed out handicraft, critical eye, sharpness, WEX, and crit boost

You're massively exaggerating how many more skills you get. In Sunbreak you could get the same shit as above with like 1 additional dps skill maybe 2 if you have a god charm. The real change is that you don't have to sacrifice half your shit just to fit in a point of evade extender and speed sharpening.
The modern skill system is simply better.

The GU set is using the Solid Levin Acrus (Lagi DB) and those dbs have a fricking long white sharpness. You need no sharpness skills whatsoever, if anything, just absolute readiness keeps them white for the whole fight. Whoever took that screencap is a moron, those "comfort" skills don't do shit and the purple sharp you get doesn't last long even with those because it's just a sliver of purple. But i agree, new world skill bloat is all too real.

Mounting and terrain height in 4, swimming in tri (although I played lance so it was actually fun)

            Anonymous

Mounting is made super fun in World (fricking ruined in Rise) and terrain height is a good addition to break up the flow of combat a bit and allow for interesting set ups. I've never played 3 so I can't comment on the underwater combat, but it spawned one of the most beloved Monsters in the series so it can't be all bad. I personally hope they bring it back for MH6 and kinda streamline it and make it good like they did mounting for World.

People like Lagi's design a lot but he's due for a fight revamp, whether or not swimming comes back.
He's a flagship monster though so he should get a pretty good treatment whenever that happens.

Not the guy you're responding to, but IMO the only thing better about it is that you can get it over with in about 2 seconds by just slamming the monster into the wall or disable the auto-mount altogether now.
But everything else about Rise's monster rodeo and how monster behavior changed to accommodate it blows.

                Anonymous

mounting is just too easy in rise, atleast you had to do something to build mounting damage like using the terrain to your advantage, in rise you can mount 3+ times in 5 minutes if the monsters all decide to come to the same zone

Shogun has handicraft and some new skill that adds a sharpness bonus when restoring 2 layers of sharpness, not sure how that works exactly but I suspect its why they made his weapons in the blue zone

Its not a terrible gimmick on weapons that have really thin layers of sharpness on the top end

I wonder why Rise didn't bring back the alpha/beta armor sets, I thought it was nice and even mixed up the designs of each set. Set bonuses were cool too with extra/boosted skills.
If we can't get something closer to the old system back, I'd at least like features like those.

      Anonymous

Probably because Beta sets were almost always just a straight improvement over Alpha if you had the right decorations to fill the extra slots. That was probably their reasoning, anyway. With crafted in decos in Rise, making Alpha's locked skills better than the Beta set's higher level of freedom would've made sense.

      Anonymous

They decided to stack more levels of skills on the armors by default instead of splitting it up by skills vs slots
A lot of skills got buffed up in slot level which kinda balanced it out in the base game but Sunbreak got crazy with full pages of maxed skills again

So Rath Coil have Windproof level 3, what even it's good for aside from against Kushala's tornados and maybe Barioth's?

      Anonymous

With no Azure Rath in the game there's no real wind pressure -> get fricked combos, but there's still shit like Anjanath's tail swing and Diablos digging

        Anonymous

That's already two monsters more than I can think of, so I guess it's pretty okay as a bonus skill.

          Anonymous

Windproof has never been as useful as tremor res but it has its moments, even though monsters landing typically doesn't come with wind pressure anymore.
Actually in the base game I think Apex Rath still had some random puffs of wind when he was flapping at you.

It’s not even good against Kushala as its ultimate tornado attacks use DRAGON wind pressure. Which is different. Chameleos’ armor sets, humorously, just allow a player to casually walk away from the vortex due to the blessing.

what weapon class do you recommend for a solo newcomer (mhw)
currently using the hammer because i like me big bonk but it’s getting me hit more often than id like.

      Anonymous

Just pick whatever you think is cool
If you're having trouble not getting hit just dodge the monster for a while and see where their openings are. Hammer likes Evade Extender so get a couple points of that if it helps.

      Anonymous

I think great sword is the best new comer weapon. All you have to do is run in, give him a little slap, then run away. It's slow so you are forced to learn when the monster is open, and it does good damage so even if you get just one hit in you'll do okay damage. Also you will learn the absolute joy that is cutting off tails.

      Anonymous

Sword and Shield is extremely straight forward and you can roll out of almost every attack animation. Its designed to be very beginner friendly.
If you are struggling with the slower weapons it might be worth your time to try it out of a few hunts and see how you like it.

      Anonymous

hammer becomes more defensive when you get to HR5 because you can unlock the alternate skill (RMB on PC) water strike that can block roars, single hit attacks, beams from rajang etc and can punish with golf swing, hammer can also dodge and keep the charge level right after you get to the next tier, swapping to and from charge: strength has invincibility frames so you might want to get used to dodging ahead of time to keep charges going and preempt the monster attacking you
evade extender and evade window can also make hammer more safe to play, increasing the dodge window
I mostly play courage hammer (alternate charge skill unlocked after improving 8 hammers) and get sub 10 minute fights easy but i still get hit a ton, quick sheathe might be something you want to try and slot in if you do need to heal right away

Is it cheating if I mod in a 2-1-1 WEX2 talisman? In over 100 hours of gameplay, I've never gotten any good talismans good and I feel like this is the bare minimum you need to be successful in late-game MR hunts

God roll is 4-5 points of skills relevant to your weapon that you either need a ton of points of or aren't easily slottable, and a 4 slot or 3-2-0 slots

            Anonymous

Any charm with 2 Lv 2 slots will do the exact same thing as a WEX2 2-slot. I feel like most complaints about the RNG of the charm system are from people giving themselves tunnel vision and not realizing they already have decent fricking charms. People are way too obsessed with specific skills on Talismans and not realizing 90% of them are interchangeable unless you have a truly godlike charm like an AB3 2-2 slot or need specific unique shit like Foray 2 or something.

You assume people actually have a decent talisman. After 280h my best one is 211 evade extender 1 widerange 1. I've never even seen a 220 or one with AB or WEX or CE and any slots at all.

Since we're talking about cheating, what is Ganker's opinion on overlays?
Cheating or just a tool to give you insights to level up your game?
I'm a Monster Hunter veteran (started with freedom unite) and although I have over 10k hours of Monster Hunter I can't really consider myself knowledgeable of all aspects of the game, sometimes I can't tell if I'm doing well or badly during a hunt I would like to parse and DPS check as a way to self-improve and compare myself to other hunters.
I would also like to get more in-depth knowledge about monster behavior on stuff like statuses, Stun, Sleep, Para, etc...

I would like to use some simple overlays like pic related to start getting a more in-depth understanding of Monster Hunter as a whole.
    Thoughts?

I think damage and health parsing is gay as frick but being able to instantly tell if a monster is gold crown sized or not is nice since it saves me from having to hunt the same monster 100 times

You're not cheating the crowns though. You're just reliably seeing if a monster is a certain size instead of wasting 5 minutes entering the quest, running up beside the monster, trying to measure it by eyeballing it, going through the effort of killing it, realizing you mismeasured it and repeating the process. Instead you enter quest, check monster, leave quest and repeat the process. It saves time that can be better used actually playing the game.

Some monsters are really fricking hard to tell. Almudron is one of them since the indicator is apparently his foreleg but his foreleg literally extends during his roar which is the only time he holds still so it's a huge pain to measure.

Using parse to get better at Monster Hunter and then turning it off when going for records is NOT doping.

Like I did a hunt and suddenly there are 2 more armour sets so I go huh OK I'll collect for that but in the next one another armour set pops up

For armor I usually just pick whatever gives basic damage skills and wear that for the whole of the early and mid game. I think the Great Izuchi gear is pretty solid throughout base rase.
For weapons it kinda depends, but I usually just go for whatever I see that has both the highest raw damage and a comfortable level of sharpness. I don't really frick with elemental shit until I'm towards the end of the game because I don't want to grind out the materials for 10 weapons I'm going to replace later.

It's pretty easy. Eventually you'll realize that your choice actually means very little in the grand scheme of things, you can count on 1 hand the number of fights in mainline that actually require you to think about your approach. You only ever need to craft exactly 4 armour sets total in every game (1 for each rank and 1 final semi endgame set), and that's not an exaggeration.

When starting out it's always best to simply build and farm what you think is cool, you can always go full meta tryhard later if you want. If you need more direction, I would just aim for generic attack up and critical eye skills first.

      Anonymous

Understand that most armors sets are not actually useful for your weapon.
Early game just pick the strongest weapon you can craft and stick with it until it feels weak. Try to upgrade your weapon like once every star level and armor every 2-3 level depending on what's available.

God speed, anon. Remember, in Sunbreak at least, all weapons are within an acceptable level of strength and you should just use the ones you want without being tied to the meta choice.

Sunbreak is Rise. I think they're less balanced in base game, but still you'll be fine choosing the cool sword and in my opinion it makes the game more enjoyable than following a checklist.

I was mostly joking, anon. I don't think it happens that often, although the first gree text does. In my multiple thousands of hours of MH I have only failed two Capture quests ever, one was caused by something like what I posted and the other was because I forgot it was a Capture quest altogether so I killed it.

I guess it removes the possibility of the player fricking up, but that's never really had a huge impact.

the quests honestly are missing a bit of intrigue. every quest always has the same monsters in the locale as far as I can tell. and monsters have maps they can show up on but don't have a quest for it like scorned in shrine ruins. It's somewhat true actually, though not for these reasons. In old MH all you had to do was wait for a slightly long attack or for them to attack your pets to heal with zero worries, but in Rise/Sunbreak monsters have attacks designed to chase down people healing like Rajang's shoulder charge and with tracking on some attacks as well timing is still just as important.

Those moves aren't designed to "chase down people who are healing" though. They're designed as a coping mechanism because they decided to make hunters be speed incarnate and without it and moves that are just blanket AoE's hunters just wouldn't ever get hit outside of greed. On top of that you can literally just dodge out of those moves because you can dodge mid-drink. It changes nothing because drinking has no commitments to it

At the cost of half your potion or zero effects at all from a curative because the effect only occurs at the end of the animation. Ofcourse it's not the same thing, but you're just outright lying to claim it doesn't have downsides or punishments for incorrect usage.

                >incorrect item usage doesn't do much of anything except increase hunt time
The only difference between this and old Monster Hunter is time wasted as a penalty, which has never mattered at all in any capacity outside of literally a handful of quests across the series' lifespan. You have always been able to be overstocked with healing and items. Actually using the 20+ healing potions, max pots, ancient pot, life powders, dust of life, etc you can carry in one hunt is practically unheard of and means you are beyond abysmal at the game.

It IS easier if we're being technical about it, but in reality it doesn't matter at all. This change only helps shitters at MH and has no effect on anyone decent.

                >The only difference between this and old Monster Hunter is time wasted as a penalty,
Old MH had a finite amount of mats meaning there were consequences to this. On top of that old MH locked you into place and if you got hit you couldn't cancel the heal meaning you STILL had to heal up, had additional hit stun building up, and often loss more than you healed, especially if you were fighting something that inflicted status ailments. Improper healing in old MH lead to deaths if your teammates didn't come in with healing powders and dust of lifes while the monster was fricking you in a corner

I once watched someone install a mod with them. Then I pictured a situation where a new player picks up GS, lands a TCS and sees a tiny dent on the healthbar of a monster. Then he uninstalls the game.
Your perception of the fight is way different when there is no healthbar. All you get is a capture state signal. Anything more will actually ruin the game.

It's people who want to gameify and streamline the game. The hunting/simulation aspect was a major draw to the MH series. Even in World, despite the casualization, it had a large hunting flavor to it with the endemic wildlife and investigating and even with the stupid bugs tracking the monster. Rise was a massive step back and degeneration of every other game before it

Wouldn't be against the idea but I felt that's what Powered-Up monsters in TU2/TU3 are referring to unless that's yet another type of form to justify it for elder dragons

They pull another Crimson Glow Valstrax and randomly add Ruiner or Blackveil without the base species. I feel TU3 would have more of these types of monsters, given the variant focus for that one

        World title updates:
        Deviljho - returning
        Kulve - New
Lunastra - returning, literally just blue teostra with autistic damage over time might as well count as a variant even if its not.
Behemoth and Leshen - autism crossover shit no one except mmo autists enjoyed, this should've been oroshi and alatreon instead as the leak suggested.

        Iceborne title updates:
        Rajang - returning
Safi Jiiva - literally just older xeno jiiva basically a variant
        Stygian - Subspecies
        Furious - Variant
        Raging - Variant
        Frostfang - Variant
        Alatreon - Returning
        Fatalis - Returning

        Rise title updates:
Teostra - returning, should've been in the base game
Kushala - returning, should've been in the base game
Chameleos - returning, possibly could've been in the base game too
Apex Rathalos - basically reskinned deviant with no gear, should've been in the base game
Apex Diablos - see apex rathalos
Apex Zinogre - see apex rathalos
Crimson Glow Valstrax - variant but new I guess
Allmother - variant with no unique gear, should've been in the base game.
        Bazelgeuse - returning

So yes, you will get 3 rare species and 1 variant in the first update and you WILL enjoy it.

That's all we're getting + A5 Afflicted monsters (gore maybe hopefully, zinogre, steve, astalos, rathalos, mizu, espinas, pyre rakna, magmadron, tigrex, diablos)

This is for certain. There's no way Metal Raths aren't in the first update. I THINK there could be a chance for a second variant apart from Bazel to get in but I won't hold my breath if we're just getting those four.

They've been saying that there's new afflicted materials to get, so unless they just add them to previous levels they're going to put more afflicted in the game.
My schizo theory right now is that "powered up" might mean something further than afflicted. Afflicted might just be the "frenzy" to the next "apex" state if that makes sense. So instead of afflicted Elders/Elder tier monsters we'll get something else.

Yeah, maybe they have better control of the Qurios or don't have the glowing weakspots for the free topple, something like that would make the additional buffs we're getting for weapons and armor pieces make more sense

You know, "powered-up" monsters might not relate to afflicted monsters at all.

      Anonymous

True, but It’d be weird to drop them entirely, that was probably the term they had to use in order to not spoil afflicted stuff before release

        Anonymous

No, I'm saying that afflicted monsters being expanded on is a given (and not worth mentioning) but "powered-up" monsters might be more along the lines of super apexes or similarly boosted up event quest monsters we'd see in older titles.

The fact it's called "Anomaly Research" instead of something that specifically pertains to Afflicted monsters like "Qurio Research" makes it seem that it's named with the intent to expand the possible scope of quests that'll be on offer.

          Anonymous

The term they use on the roadmap could also be a blanket term for anything anomaly related/emergency quests since both of those are technically powered up.

          Anonymous

bro the afflicted monster quests are literally called anomaly research: monstername

            Anonymous

Yeah but that prefix could be applied to anything without having to specifically refer to afflicted monsters and it wouldn't sound out of place. Like "Anomaly Research: Apex Zinogre" or whatever if they plan on reintroducing Apexes properly which is what I'm partly holding out on "powered-up monsters" actually being.

              Anonymous

              that's very optimistic

I mean, apexes were just an example. The point is that the nomenclature here allows for a degree of flexibility.

                Anonymous

It's not even that far-fetched of anon to think will happen. They already have the base movesets of a handful of them, all they'd have to do is change a few moves and steal most of the movesets from GU for the remaining Deviants they haven't ported.
If anything that's the one thing I'd argue is a guaranteed result, assuming people giving them shit for apexes doesn't scare them into dropping them entirely like Rampages or the Mizu in the TU isn't just Apex/Soulseer.

      Anonymous

Yeah, could just be the beefed up event monsters like HR's apex emergencies/advanced mons. It's the most confusingly and vaguely worded roadmap I've seen and I'm at least 60% that's on purpose.

I unironically enjoy the strongarm stance and think it should have been added in gen 5 instead of tackle. You press the R/shoulder button during a charge like you do with the tackle and do a strongarm.
The damage buff and instant charge is overpowered, so to work it into a base kit, just make it take guard skills into account a bit so you couldn't just parry a OHKO nuke with no skills, don't increase your TCS damage and instead of insta-charge of TCS just keep the level of your charge or add +1 charge to it as you go into TCS, similar to the backslide.
And it actually makes proper use of the block instead of that moronic guard tackle.

You bet we'll see the dogs again. They already put the time, money and resources to design the damn things and how they'd work, just do go 'we'll never bring them into another Monster Hunter again'.
      >what about Shakalaka
Their general model and design existed since 2nd gen all they had was a mask swap. Pretty basic compared to making several helmets and body armor look aesthetically pleasing like they do for the felynes.

I have to agree with the guy saying Rise and to some extent World lost a huge aspect of the Hunter Simulation genre.
Sunbreak is fun as frick, sure. But it sure ain't Monster Hunter.
You don't hunt Monsters, there's no prep-time, there's no investigation, there's no "hunting".
You just accept a quest, jump on the map, instantly know where the Monster is, and you go after them and duke it out to the death.
Every mission feels like an arena mission.
Modern Monster Hunter feels more like "Monster Brawler"

Every MH game devolves into Monster Brawler, even the older titles. The monster would only spawn in 2-3 areas so you already knew where they would be, and "prep time" is just making sure you don't forget to bring a certain drink like a dumbass. People act like you had to spend 5 minutes before every hunt making sure you were ready, but every lobby I was in would start the next quest within 1 or 2 minutes, depending on if someone just felt like changing their weapon.

GU certainly doesn't and neither does end-game 3U when you're fighting shit like abyssal lagi. Hell, even apexes in 4U made you respect them. A MH title only devolves into that when the hunter can overpower the monsters with little effort. Even a lot of World's end-game monsters don't. Base Rise was PEAK monster brawler, I don't think anything can get as bad as that was. Sunbreak is monster brawler because afflicted are just easier vanilla monsters because you do extra damage for just hitting them and you can force them to be exhausted for just hitting

they should have designed monsters with uncounterable moves or actually just frick counters, take them out already

      Anonymous

Counter skills that don't involve a shield should still require Guard for the attack to come out vs heavy hits, otherwise you could still block the hit but only stagger backwards after. Just like the blocking weapons have to deal with.
Evade Window already effects everything with iframes so why not extend Guard to counter frames?

      Anonymous

it's called multi hit attacks and they exist and (most) weapons cant counter them. Only exceptions are lance instant guard and maybe LS if you have enough time. You can also try to block these but they usually do a lot of chip damage (ie valstrax laser canon).

LS parry has a long recovery but it can often move you out of the followup
Lance Instablock can't do anything to moves with multiple simultaneous hitboxes like Auroracanth bodyslams

People say it's the mobility that makes MHR too easy but it's these moronic wirebug counters with seconds of active frames that almost every weapon has that trivializes the game

Is it true PC monsters have better tracking at higher FPS?
I just started playing Rise on PC at 240 fps after being used to playing on the switch for hundreds of hours.
For some reason I'm taking a lot more hits from attacks that I easily dodged on the switch

Skills should be tied to what is physically displayed on the character. It's a diagetic thing and looking good vs having the skills you want should be tradeoff, this makes it even more impressive when someone clears a tough hunt with bad armor that looks cool

Because the game is so easy that if you unironically run out of potions, there's a serious issue.

he used to have dual blades but the handle of one broke so he glued the blade to the other one and pretend it's a longsword
