Kai is like the most forgettable MK character ever. He's not even remembered when people are naming the worst characters.
Jarek is only memorable for being in those hilarious endings with Sonya and Jax. He should have just been Kano.
Tanya and Fujin were okay, they've actually been improved in more recent games.
Reiko was intriguing when they insinuated he might be Shao Kahn, then that theory was shot down and he had nothing going for him.
Shinnok just couldn't hold a candle to Shao Kahn as the replacement main villain.
Quan Chi was really the only good one.
>Reiko was intriguing when they insinuated he might be Shao Kahn
Never understood this, him being a Shao Kahn protégé is way more interesting than him just secretly being Shao Kahn and changing his clothes and name for no reason
I don't think that Reiko was Shao Kahn's "protegé", he was just some guy that worked for him. If they actually had some kind of close relationship that might be interesting. >for no reason
Well we thought there would be reason. An undercover Shao Kahn seemed like a setup for something big later, but then it was nothing. All of this is just to say that Reiko was not a cool or interesting character.
quan chi was fine. shinnok/fujin/tanya were alright. overall mk4 was pretty much when the series jumped the shark for me. i found this game disappointing at the time and this marked the mk dark ages until a return to form with mk9
I fully admit it, I was in love with Mortal Kombat 4 back when it was new. Just being a Mortal Kombat game was enough to make me love a game back then. Now as an adult however I can see all the issues with it, and why it's one of the weaker titles.
>favourite food
KEK.
I felt the same, OP. When MK4 came out I loved it on the basis that it was a MK game.
Nowadays I can see how much of a shitty entry it was.
Never played DA or the other one.
As for the new characters, Quan Chi was the only cool one. Reiko was cool, but played like shit.
The others are total crap.
Quite possibly the perfect game. The graphics, gore, characters, storylines, everything works and so much fun with friends and family. It’s the one game I’ll pull out on a Christmas and everyone young and old gets excited.
>characters, storylines
Though it's not the purpose of a fighting game MK was oddly strong in these departments, so much that MK remains the only truly good video game movie.
Of course they flubbed it in the sequel and reboot, but I digress
there is nothing in the gaming world with more soul than the MK:DA krypt finding Cooking with Scorpion as a little kid late at night laughing so hard I was worried i'd wake up my parents
>Spent over 55 continues to beat Shang Tsung in MK2 >Beat Kintaro in 3 attempts >Fricking beat Shao Kahn on my first try
What the actual frick? Baraka is a fricking god.
My fav newcomers were Fujin and Reiko MK4 had a lot of variety on stages and it has the best soundtrack in the series
Kai had a fun handstand move for trolling, one of my friends always beat me spamming Quan Chi's teleport stomp.
Shinook and Quan Chi are really good MK characters in general. Sneaky filthy necromanchers. Tanya doesn't look like much, sort of plain but her fighting style is fantastic in MKX.
With the exception of Jarek, who is useless and adds nothing and they should've just used Kano, I like the MK4 newcomers.
I always thought Kai was interesting, they kind of tried to set him up to become the new Liu Kang lorewise but they did it in such a half-assed way nobody gave a shit. Then in the next game they actually killed off Liu Kang but Kai was nowhere to be found. If they had ever bothered to flesh him out and maybe make him not seem like such a joke he could've been a good character.
from what I remember being a kid on MK forums 20 years ago, Liu Kang was just not popular and sorta boring compared to guys like Scorpion, Reptile and so on
I barely remember what any of them were called.
I bought MK4 new on the N64 as a kid. I think a friend must have "borrowed" it at some point because I can't find the damn thing. That or I traded it for Turok 2 I can't remember.
As to the question, I still fricking despise all those characters.
Fujin and Tanya were awesome. Reiko's alright too. They obviously got better later one when they were redesigned in the sequels. Kai had a ton of potential but they never used him again. Interesting to see a capoeira fighter in MK.
Yeah, they dialed back on the whole wackyness of MK3 and the whole robot ninjas and traffic cops fighting cyborg alien centaurs insanity. But things like the atrocious animation and the goofy voices may make it even weirder.
Its a shame that the higherups at Midway couldnt keep them in check.
looking back MK3/UMK3 also had its fair share of weird voices.. they just didn't understand that most fans appreciated the more serious tone of MK1 and 2.
Someone mentioned MK Gold when I brought up how much better the arcade version of MK4 looks compared to the PS1 and N64 ports look. MK Gold still looks significantly worse than the arcade version, plus it plays a lot worse than the PS1 version.
i think quan chi looks cool
Literally no one does.
Debuted in MKMSZ.
Wrong, he debuted in the cartoon show. I'm dead series, too. His very first appearance was in the cartoon
I really liked Kai and Raiko
Always liked Scorpion's icon, like he's posing for an ID photo lol

>mk dark ages
Deadly Alliance and Shaolin Warriors were great. Deception was OK and Armageddon in particular was bad.
deception had a shitty roster but the amount of content was great
midway did my homie reptile so dirty in this game on god
Reptile has looked fricking gay ever since he stopped being the green ninja.
I fully admit it, I was in love with Mortal Kombat 4 back when it was new. Just being a Mortal Kombat game was enough to make me love a game back then. Now as an adult however I can see all the issues with it, and why it's one of the weaker titles.
and speaking of things that aged poorly
need more slim black women in fighting games tbqh
She's just tan
I always thought she was not-Indian or not-middle eastern, either way she's been sexy and fun to play in all her appearances.
They made her some sort of Egyptian. It was a good choice.
Gross
>Likes: boys
Everyone knows girls don't like boys. Girls like cars and money.
And other girls.
I got ur ref anon

I think the PS2 MK games are way better than MK4
That's not opinion, it's straight up fact.
PS2 MK games are literal kusoge.
deadly alliance and deception are kino and way better than the newer MK games
I thought Reiko was cool, but I was such an easy mark for MK Ninjas, even though he technically wasn't one.
Nah, but it was still an OK game.
The new characters were pretty lame, except for Quan Chi who was pretty cool.
Tanya is okay I guess, but she's just standard hottie material.
Real Reptile was stupid, and Jarek was clearly a last minute skin replacement for Kano.
sovl

seeing these ads in magazines at the time was amazing.
>competition edition
>tournament edition
i dont remember this marketing at all though
My friend had this as a poster in his room for the entire time that I knew him.
What an awesome friend
These photos of them are incredible.
MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTT
Every time I hear this song, I feel able to defend Earth Realm.
I remember screaming that randomly at downtown. Got a few laughs
I like the game a lot but no, I hated the characters. I would play as Reptile in the regular ninja costume
Fujin Quan Chi and Tanya were cool and all got improved in later games, Shinnok was a lot better in MKA and MKX.
Until Quan Chu got ran into the fricking ground, I'm glad he sat MK11 out at last.
Tanya is hot.
And a depraved bisexual.
The character designs were cool, but the game itself was shit IMHO.
Kano was a man's kind of character
there is nothing in the gaming world with more soul than the MK:DA krypt finding Cooking with Scorpion as a little kid late at night laughing so hard I was worried i'd wake up my parents
the only cool new characters were quan chi and fujin
>Spent over 55 continues to beat Shang Tsung in MK2

his jump kick is broken as frick and ai pretty much always falls for blade swipe
My fav newcomers were Fujin and Reiko MK4 had a lot of variety on stages and it has the best soundtrack in the series
Kai had a fun handstand move for trolling, one of my friends always beat me spamming Quan Chi's teleport stomp.
I preferred Trilogy but I liked the ending scenes after beating the game which each character. I still have my MK4 poster that I got at KB Toys.
Jaxx: This is not a BRUTALITY this is a FATALITY!
Jarek: IMSOGAAAAAAY
I liked Trilogy, I wasn't aware it was apparently a mess until later, cause I was young
it's a fun mess
I loved quan chi and fujin, everyone else was lame
Shinook and Quan Chi are really good MK characters in general. Sneaky filthy necromanchers. Tanya doesn't look like much, sort of plain but her fighting style is fantastic in MKX.
>On October 18th, 2022, Hoskins posted a video to Instagram revealing that her psychologist concluded that she may be on the autism spectrum.
cute
I like Reptile's redesign. Frick you all.
>Sonya
what a women
With the exception of Jarek, who is useless and adds nothing and they should've just used Kano, I like the MK4 newcomers.

Replacing Liu Kang never works out. Kai, Shujinko, Cassie, eventually we always end up going back to Kang.
I don't understand the obsession with wanting to kill/replace Liu Kang
He's not the most interesting, but few fighting game "main heroes" are interesting, at least he stands out by being a long haired pyromancer monk
from what I remember being a kid on MK forums 20 years ago, Liu Kang was just not popular and sorta boring compared to guys like Scorpion, Reptile and so on
liu kang has always been a boring jobber. Who wants to play as a boring human character in MK when you can play as a ninja or a robot?
I don't think you understand what "jobber" means.
Liu Kang literally was not and cannot be a jobber dip shit
he died like a b***h in deadly alliance
your mom died like a b***h
Faking an injury to rebrand and push old heels isn't jobbing
:^)
I liked Tanya and Quan Chi. But other than that, these newer characters aren't as cool as the ones that came before them.
I barely remember what any of them were called.
I bought MK4 new on the N64 as a kid. I think a friend must have "borrowed" it at some point because I can't find the damn thing. That or I traded it for Turok 2 I can't remember.

>Kai had a ton of potential but they never used him again.
He was in Mortal Kombat Armageddon too.
If that was even Kai. Looked like a totally different dude.
No more or less than what they did to Jarek.
So generic
Armageddon Jarek took a portal to Outworld from Def Jam
The only memorable one for me is Jarek, and that's only because he screams "I'M SO GAAAAAYYYYYY" as part of Jax's ending.
>"I'M SO GAAAAAYYYYYY"
klassik
I liked MK4 because it went back to the weirder mythology/dimension stuff, but the gameplay sucked balls.
good music though.
Yeah, they dialed back on the whole wackyness of MK3 and the whole robot ninjas and traffic cops fighting cyborg alien centaurs insanity. But things like the atrocious animation and the goofy voices may make it even weirder.

Mortal Kombat was literally the only thing keeping Midway alive by then.
Sonya's portrait makes her look like a golfer.
When I was a kid I thought Reiko was Robin from Batman and Robin. I liked all the characters I only disliked Jarek, he's so fricking meh it's unreal.
Nowadays you get MK with Robocop, Rambo and the Terminator punching each other.
>When I was a kid I thought Reiko was Robin from Batman and Robin
He looks like a cross between Robin and Mr Fantastic
I'd like Liu Kang more if they'd stopped the WAATAH crap. I dislike Law in Tekken for the same reason.
>Reiko
>not a pretty Japanese girl
quan chi was the best announcer voice.
GET OVER HERE
Why was the series incapable of doing another good Villian after Shao Kahn?
the best villain was old man shang tsung
Quan Chi, Fujin, Meat. Quan Chi is hilarious as a slimey douche bag but overly comedic.
Meat actually got a really cool moveset and look in MKA.
And right now, it's the only thing keeping WB games alive. Things never change.
I remember wanking to Tanya and her headscissor fatality.
To me MK4 is insanely fast paced, what other games can compare to it?
MvC2, SSFII Turbo, and Darkstalkers games, etc. MK4 plays exactly like a 2D fighter with an added sidestep.
MKTrilogy.
Someone mentioned MK Gold when I brought up how much better the arcade version of MK4 looks compared to the PS1 and N64 ports look. MK Gold still looks significantly worse than the arcade version, plus it plays a lot worse than the PS1 version.
