You notice it a lot with japanese media since its a lot more prolific but a huge number of mutts saw even Squid Game in that terrible dub.
I really don't understand it. I've always just worked off the assumption that the close to original experience something is the better. Why would I even want to watch foreign shit if I couldn't even bear hearing other languages?

This is the video game board. In most games the script is the same because the game is dubbed at the same time it's subbed.

The weirdest thing is when devs get the Japanese VAs to record new lines so they match the dubtitles. It's rare but man is that weird. Even if you pick Japanese you still get the US script. Weird shit.

Genshin Impact isn't even Japanese. It's not even anime. It's literally a chink gacha game with an anime wannabe art style. By that logic, shouldn't you be learning Chinese to play Genshin with chink voices?

Action games lack subtitles for battle quotes most of the time. Even some lewd games don't say what they're saying when you do the deeds. Yes I want even the moan and groans and every single thing subbed.
IF every single line was properly subbed then maybe I'd give it a go but even then not often.
Some people just engage with media because they had an interest in that particular work, and their interest in "Japan" or "Japanese culture" or "the Japanese language" as concepts as much as you or I do. They found a piece of media that piqued their interest, and many people usually go with what's most familiar to them linguistically if it's available.
This isn't exclusive to US Americans either. There are many Spanish language dubs of anime, and I know for a fact that some Latin Americans opt to use these if they are available for a certain show they're watching.
I personally watch subbed anime almost exclusively (Partially because I'm messed up in the head and reading is easier for me than watching because it's an active practice. Reading subtitles helps me focus om the media better.), but when it comes to games I may or may not switch to JP voices. For games what matters to me is that it does the "game" part well, and some other players probably think the same. Really I actually like it when games have little to no voice acting, because that opens the possibility that the resources that would have been dumped into the seiyuu pit could have gone to something else.
And when games these days have atrocious scripts like this

I hated dubfights back then and I hate them now. Many dubs are shit and rightfully considered as such, but I can't build up the energy to care about the exact details of how people consume increasingly mediocre pop media.
I’ve got no problem with subtitles for passive media, like movies or tv shows, but with a game I don’t want to miss out on dialogue because my eyes were focusing on the enemies and not the subtitles. A VN or a turn-based RPG would probably be fine but I don’t tend to play those.

Not to condone genshintrannies or anything but you don't even need to understand a language in order to gauge acting quality and verisimilitude when it comes to playing a character. And the gulf in quality is readily apparent in english dubs of japanese media.
Seiyuus saying the dumbest most anime bullshit ever still has verisimilitude compared to EN VAs performing the same lines which is just embarassing
I feel this is because the jp scene does voice "acting" while in America they do "voice" acting.
In Japan, they actually try to deliver the lines. They will shout moronic shit and try their damnedest to own it and sound cool doing it. The amazing thing is that it usually fricking does, but maybe it just has to do with the Japanese language not sounding completely moronic when you say stupid shit (mind you this is the same culture where bushi had to say shit like "katajikenai" unironically, and where bombastic kabuki is their version of theater). The actors do their best to really sell the line and sell their character, and it sounds like they understand their character's convictions
In NA, people do voices. They don't act. They are always themselves. They don't try to adapt their delivery or who they are or what they're doing, they just show up to work, they are themselves, they have no idea what the scene is or what the character's motivations or feelings are, they just got the job because their name was already well known and they can do a few different voices. That says nothing about their acting ability, it says only that the person who got the job can do more than 1 voice, it does not take into account how well the person delivering the lines can or can't act. And believe you me, that person cannot fricking act. They are cringing at what they are saying mid sentence, and you can hear it. They deliver a line and it sounds out of place on their tongue, and hollow behind the words
