My friend convinced me to buy Age of Empires 2.

My friend convinced me to buy Age of Empires 2. I never played it before and now when I try to play against skirmish hard AI it suddenly arrives into my base with a huge army and crushes me. Any tips? What should I focus on? I like teutons.

learn the early game (pulling sheep/boar) and how to get the economy going. watch some youtube videos and practise that. if you got that down you can start copying some strategies.
AoE2 is very economy based. even if your micro is complete garbage you will start winning as soon as you are good at keep using resources and those first 5-10 minutes of the game

So pull in animals, farm the meat, establish windmill and farms, start chopping wood etc. but how important are upgrades vs advancing to the next age?

        AOE2 is a bit stale.
You should try Rise of nations extended edition instead. Hah! RONEE is 75% off on stream.

I would play Zero Hour if mismatch wasn't happening so often + if the game wouldn't be slowing down over time because of horribly coded engine.

rise of nations is nowhere near as good as aoe2

yes you pretty much always want to have villagers in your pipeline and pump out military untis, weaving in upgrades.
it depends on your civ. you can just copy some teuton build orders. teutons are very good mid game thanks to their farm bonus. they are also pretty good at defending early but not so good at rushing.
however I would not really try and focus on such specific strategies if you just getting into it. just get stuff down that helps you in general

When I played with my friend I built catapults and bombarded enemy base from the next galaxy while my friend was protecting the catapults. Even he had no idea they could shoot so far. The game is pretty comfy. I only hate that the enemy surrenders fast and it's over.

          >The AI is relentless because it's the new AI, created for and by compgays, it will completely rape you obviously.
There are 3 AIs. HD, CD and no prefix AI. I have no idea how different they are.

First off play moderate you moronic buffon, then keep making villagers and spending your resources on shit that you will use. That's literally it. Make more town centers on Castle age to make more villagers. Have 100 villagers by endgame with 200 popcap.

The AI is relentless because it's the new AI, created for and by compgays, it will completely rape you obviously. The truth is that AoE 2 in singleplayer is one of the most comfy RTS you can play with a lot of campaigns, but the multiplayer, FRICK NO, it's the most tryhard-infested robotic shit ever. If you don't follow the same goddamn build meta every time until Castle Age and you forget to repeatedly build villagers at any moment you'll get assfricked by a bunch of bullshit units that get micro'd by a fricking autist. Expect tower rushes, wall blocking abuse, archers turning into blobs that one hit kill your units, knights fricking up your economy and late game turning into either trashwars (no gold unit spam) or broken OP as frick nation units and artillery spam. Frick AoE multiplayer, frick the people who play it, frick everything about it.

There are no tips, even after you get good with resourse management you'll have to get lucky.
Making units of one type? Enemy was apparently making a direct counter.
Making variety of units? Enemy was making units of one type that walks all over most of them.
Don't build a wall? Get raided.
Build a wall? Get blocked, enemy contorls rest of the map.
Try raiding? No unit can get close to land a hit without dying

I agree that aoe2 multiplayer is very brutal just cause it is such an old game and most people playing it know what they are doing, but you can still have fun with friends that are new or just play against easy ai

The multiplayer is only tryhard when you're actually good yourself. The game has an elo system, so if you lose a couple of times in a row, you are eventually going to play against fellow boomers who just want to spend the first 30 minutes building a comfy, nice looking, walled off town before even thinking of creating any military units.

You should try Sid Meir's Alpha Centauri as well. very interesting game.
planetary pack should be less than 10 bucks. I'd play the original first then dabble with expansion if you want.

AoE II had been out forever so the broader meta has been refined with strategies you'd never think of executing like using your scout to push deer towards your town center. That being said it's still fun to play as a shitter. I had hundreds of hours playing in Noobs Only lobbies where you can practice the basics of RTS games without being inundated with too many details. The important things are to 1) Always be making villagers. Your town center should always be active and only stop producing vils when your aging up or researching a tech. Most games are 200 pop and you should have roughly 100 vils before you stop producing them. 2) learn when you're going to need to prioritize certain resources. You don't need an even split of vils on every resource at all times wood and food are more important early game 3) learn the tech tree and how the units counter each other. AoE is very counter heavy with certain units that are designed to be used to defeat others pike > knight being the obvious one
That'll get you good to play against lower AI and in casual noob multiplayer. If you get more into then you can start exploring more advanced gameplay
